Preface
As a head of the organizing committee, I am pleased to invite you all to the Falk Symposium 189 “Eosinophilic Esophagitis: A novel chronic-inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract” that will take place in the city of Graz, Austria .
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) was first recognized as a distinct entity in 1993 . In 2013, we will mark the 20th anniversary of EoE discovery . Whether a 20-year period can be considered a long time very much depends on one’s perspective . For EoE patients suffering from swallowing difficulties, 20 years is certainly a long time . In contrast, for researchers studying EoE, 20 years is a relatively short time . Twenty years of learning about EoE made us realize that for every question that is answered many more questions still remain unanswered or not even thought of yet .
The past two decades had a profound impact on EoE . Today, EoE has become a regularly-diagnosed disease, and is likely to be the leading cause of dysphagia . Fortunately, a number of milestone discoveries have deepened our understanding of the genetic and immunological mechanisms of EoE and led to improved therapeutic modalities . Unfortunately, permanent treatment options still remain elusive today .
This symposium brings together many world-renowned EoE experts, from pioneers, who led early work on EoE, to a new generation of investigators that will continue to shape the future of EoE research . Attendees of this meeting will have the unique opportunity to meet key opinion leaders from several disciplines, such as allergy, pathology, immunology, adult and pediatric gastroenterology . The program is designed to bridge the gap between basic science and daily clinical practice . Falk Foundation lends its generous support to organization of what I hope will be one extraordinary meeting on the occasion of 20th anniversary of EoE discovery .
Speaking on behalf of the organizing committee, it is with great pleasure that I invite you to participate in this symposium and look forward to welcoming you in the wonderful city of Graz in September of 2013 .
