learningoutcomesBecausethisisauniquemaster'sentryoptionprogramforstudentswithbaccalaureatedegreesinsubjectsotherthannursing,wearefortunatetohavededicated,verycapablestudentswhocometouswithawealthofworkandlifeexperience.FortheClinicalNurseLeader(CNL)program,theperformanceofstudentsontheHESIExitandNCLEXexams,andtheCNLcertificationexamproviderichfeedbackabouttheoverallcurriculareffectivenessofourprogram.Inaddition,becauseitissuchanacceleratedandintenselearningexperience(6semesterstotal),welookcarefullyatstudentprogressionpatterns,aggregategradespercourse,studentcourseevaluations,andanyotherindicationsofdisruptionsinthenormalstudentprogressionpattern.AlloftheseevaluationactivitieswereundertakenunderthedirectionoftheSONProgramEvaluationcommittee,theLeadershipandAdvancedpracticeDepartment,andtheCNLCurriculumTaskForce.TheSONAcademicStandardsCommitteereviewedanystudentgradeappealsorapplicationsforreinstatementafteracademicdisqualification.2. b. Whatdidthefacultyinthedepartmentorprogramlearn?Summarizeyourfindingsandconclusionsasaresultoftheassessmentindicatingstrengthsandweaknessesinstudentlearningdemonstratedbythisassessment.
Welearnedthatweweregenerallypreparingstudentswellfortheirroleasaregisterednurse,butwerenotaseffectiveinpreparingfortheClinicalNurseLeaderRole.PassratesonHESIspecialty,HESIexitandNCLEXexamsremainextremelyhigh(100%)butstudentswerelesssuccessful(about75%)inattainingtherequiredminimalpassingscoreontheCNLcertificationexam.WealsolearnedthatnoteverygraduatewassittingfortheexambecauseitisnotrequiredforlicensureasaRN,butweexpecteditofourgraduates.
c. Whatwillbedonedifferentlyasaresultofwhatwaslearned?
Discusshowcoursesand/orcurriculawillbechangedtoimprovestudentlearningasaresultoftheassessment.Includeadiscussionofhowthefacultywillhelpstudentsovercometheirweaknessesandimprovetheirstrengths.
AthoroughreviewoftheCNLcontentofthecurriculumwascompletedduringtheFallandspringsemesters.Specifically,the5one‐unit“CNLRoles”courseswereexaminedingreatdetailthroughthelensoftheprogramoutcomesandtheAACNWhitePaperontheRoleoftheCNL.Wereviewedstudentcourseevaluationcommentsforthesecourses,andalsoconductedrudimentarycontentanalysesofassignmentscompletedinthesecourses.Afteraseriesoffaculty‐studentdiscussions,weproposedandwasultimatelyapprovedacompleterestructuringoftheCNLrolescourses.Forexample,the“IntroductiontotheCNLRole”coursewasinitiallyscheduledforthesecondsemester,witharolescourseoccurringsemesters2‐6.Feedbackfromthesesourcesconvincedusthataninitialintroductiontotherole,withadditionalexposuretotheevidence

validatingtheCNLrole,wasessentialduringthefirstsemester.Theoriginal1‐unitcourseinsemester2wasreplacedbya1‐unitclassinsemester1,andculminatingina2‐unitcourseinsemester6.TheCNLinternshiphasbeenredesignedtoincludeamoreexplicitfocusonCNLroleintegrationandthesupportingdocuments(syllabus,internshipevaluation,assignments)havebeenupdatedtoreflectthisenhancedemphasisontheopportunitiesoftheCNLrole.

Coursedescription:ThiscourseexpandsontheclinicalleadershipaspectsoftheCNLrole,emphasizingtheimportanceofcommunication,alliance‐buildingandaccurateassessmentoftheabilitiesandscopeofpracticelimitationswithinahealthcareteam.Conceptsrelatedtomicrosystemleadershipandcoordinationofnursingteamswillbeintroduced.

Coursedescription:Presentsaframeworkforinterdisciplinaryleadershipandlateralintegrationofcare.Throughtheclinicalimmersionexperience,thestudentwillintegrateleadershipandclinicalmanagementconceptstoprovideacontextforimplementationoftheCNLroleincomplex,adaptivehealthcaresystems.
Coursepre/co‐requisites:EnrolledinCNLMSNprogramandcompletedsemester1,2,3,4and5coursework.ConcurrentenrollmentinSemester6ClinicalInternship.
