Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning (hereafter referred to as "Humber") recognizes the value of input from industry and the community, through program advisory committees, to assist in ensuring that programs remain current and relevant to marketplace needs. The purpose of this policy is to guide the operations of Humber program advisory committees, in accordance with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Minister's Binding Policy Directive: Framework for Programs of Instruction. This document is available in alternate format on request. Scope: This applies to all postsecondary degree, diploma and certificate programs offered by Humber. Definitions: Program Advisory Committee members: the membership of program advisory committee includes: employers, graduates, business and industry leaders, representatives from professional and accrediting bodies and agencies. All appointed members have voting privileges. Policy: 1. Program Advisory Committees

Purpose/Rationale:

The Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology Act, 2002, requires that program advisory committees be established for each program of instruction or cluster of related programs offered by colleges. 2. The mandate of a program advisory committee is to provide advice on the following: • Co-operative experiences and field placement - Suggest and support experiential

educational opportunities in industry, including: field placements; clinical experience; co-operative experiences; and student field trips;

• Employment prospects - Recommend and advise on student placements, including those in graduating classes for suitable part-time, summer or full-time permanent positions;

• Student awards - Assist in the establishment of scholarships, bursaries and awards for Humber students;

• Public relations - Promote good relationships with local community and businesses, industry and professional associations;

• Curriculum - Provide content suggestions for inclusion in the program to maintain program relevancy and currency;

• Technology- Provide advice on the technological trends and changes in industry. • Program review - Participate in the program review process as required; • Special assignments - Complete special assignments such as involvement in

convocation, award ceremonies, board meetings and other events as appropriate.

3. On behalf of the Board, the President and the Board Chair will appoint, and acknowledge the completion of term, of all members.

4. The term for committee members will be three years, renewable once. If a member leaves the organization which he/she represents, that person will step down, unless the committee requires his/her expertise.

5. At least two Humber employees, the Dean or his/her designate and a faculty representative, will attend program advisory committee meetings as resource persons. Humber representatives do not act as committee members.

6. Each program advisory committee will elect a Chair from the membership pool, for a two­year term. A Chair may stand for re-election once.

7. A minimum of two meetings will be held a year, preferably one per semester, and will be conducted according to conventional rules of order.

8. The Chair will preside over all meetings with the support of the Dean or his/her designate. A quorum for motions and resolutions will be represented though a clear majority (50 per cent plus one) of voting members.

9. Each program advisory committee may establish subcommittees, as necessary.

10. The President will establish a procedure for monitoring the effectiveness of program advisory committees and for maintaining appropriate records.
