Defining all the specific roles of the LPN is difficult because healthcare delivery is constantly changing and the duties /role of the LPN changes accordingly. Some of the duties an LPN may expect to perform include the administering of medication (oral and parenteral), before and after surgical care, long term care, and end of life care. Employment Licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses held about 753,600 jobs in 2008. About 25 percent of LPNs worked in hospitals, 28 percent in nursing care facilities, and another 12 percent in offices of physicians. ATC uses the COMPASS exam for measuring proficiency in reading, writing and math. Program DescriptionThe Practical Nursing program is designed to prepare students to write the NCLEX-PN for licensure as practical nurses. The program prepares graduates to give competent nursing care. This is done through a selected number of academic and occupational courses providing a variety of techniques and materials necessary to assist the student in acquiring the needed knowledge and skills to give competent care. A variety of clinical experiences is planned so that theory and practice are integrated under the guidance of the clinical instructor. Program graduates receive a practical nursing diploma and have the qualifications of an entry-level practical nurse.

REQUIREMENTS TO ADVANCE:A GPA of 2.7 is required to advance from the first semester tothe second semester.The GPA will be calculated using the following courses: ENGL1010, MATH 1012, PSYC 1010, and ALHS 1011.Students will be allowed only two (2) failing grades duringtheir enrollment in the program. Upon failing the first class(whether it is general core courses, allied health sciencecourses, nursing courses, or nursing practicum courses)the student will attend an appeals hearing with the Dean ofAcademic Affairs, and selected nursing faculty. The studentwill be placed on a probationary status with a prescribedaction plan. The student must adhere to the prescribedaction plan completely.If a student fails a second course, that student will bedropped from the program and unable to reenter for five(5) years.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:In addition to the requirements for admission to Albany Technical College the following must be met:

• Make application and indicate Practical Nursing as program of choice

• High School transcript or GED• Submission of an acceptable Nursing Aptitude Test (NAT)

score of “35” or better. (The NAT can be repeated only once, and potential students must wait 60 days after the initial test date before retesting).

• Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.• The office of admissions will notify applicants of the

mandatory orientation• A copy of your Birth Certificate• Two professional recommendation forms must be submitted

prior to or during the orientation• Orientation and personal interview must be completed prior

to registration
