Welcome

What’s new in 2016?

One dynamic event - new theatrette surrounded by the innovators display hubs

Five pitch sessions shared openly with exhibitors for maximum involvement

Knowledge shared and knowledge gained across industries and the water supply chain

Exhibitor displays are open to the public from 2.00pm – 5.00pm on day two.

1 good idea has far reaching consequences.

What the water industry says

“The sessions, the speakers and their presentations were well aligned to address

water challenges in a holistic manner. There was a lot I could learn both from the view point of water issues that are faced in Australia and also how the Association is bringing together resources that offer

solutions of lasting value.”Ramani Iyer

CII National Water Council – Delegate

8.30am Arrival and registration

9.00am Welcome addressJonathan mcKeown, Chief Executive, Australian Water Association

9.10am Opening addressThe Hon. Barnaby Joyce mP, Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources (invited)

9.30am Keynote address: Design thinking: revolutionising problem solvingDesign thinking is a contemporary approach to complex problem solving that’s rapidly gaining traction in corporations worldwide. In contrast with traditional problem solving that typically involves jumping in and trying to come up with a solution right from the start, Design Thinking takes a different and more considered path. It begins by deeply observing how customers engage with or experience the issue being reviewed. From there, insights are gained and hypotheses formed about possible improvements. These ideas are brainstormed, then developed via storyboard and finally as a prototype. The prototype is tested with the customer, and the cycle repeated if necessary.

Dr Jeffrey Tobias, Managing Director, The Strategy Group

10.10am Morning break in the Innovation Hub

10.40am Session 1: Urban water management and innovative urban designThe quantity and quality of water available to cities for energy, industry and human development needs to adapt to the growing population and our environmental changes. This session will address the opportunity of Integrated Urban Water Management by taking a landscape view of water challenges by looking at competing water users through coordinated and flexible planning.

Speakers include: Paul mulley, Manager People & Places, Liveable City Solutions Division, Sydney Water Professor Stuart White, Director Institute for Sustainable Futures, UTS Daniel Lambert, Australasia Water and Urban Renewal Leader, Arup Professor Zhiguo Yuan, Director, Advanced Water Management Centre, The University of Queensland Professor Tony Wong, Chief Executive, CRC for Water Sensitive Cities

11.30am Innovation pitch session

11.50am Session 2: Harvesting energy from water and wastewater The use of water and wastewater to generate energy (hydropower, anaerobic digestion, wastewater heat exchanger, etc) offers a good alternative to common energy sources. A number of energy providers and water utilities increasingly use water and wastewater to address local energy needs. This session will highlight the extent with which the industry uses water resources to generate energy and will discuss future challenges faced by the increasing demand.

Speakers include: Timothy Nelson, Head of Economics, Policy and Sustainability, AGL Energy Ian Donald, Project Manager, Major Projects, Yarra Valley Water

12.35pm Innovation pitch session

12.55pm Lunch break with business matching

2.30pm Session 3: Measuring and adapting to climate variabilityUnderstanding how Australia’s climate can vary, and how a changing climate will affect us, helps us to plan for the future. This session will provide the audience with an overview of how Australia is developing tools and solutions to ensure that our industries become resilient to climate variability.

Speakers include: Dr Suzanne Hollins, Senior Research Scientist, Institute for Environmental Research, ANSTO Ian Prosser, Assistant Director, Water Information Services, Bureau of Meteorology

3.15pm Innovation pitch session

3.35pm Innovation Challenge 2016 launchgretha oost, Founder and Managing Director, Half A Teaspoon - Winner of the Innovation Challenge 2015

4pm Afternoon break in the Innovation Hub

4.30pm Session 4: Management and treatment of priority substances and emerging chemicals The presence of emerging contaminants, priority substances, and phosphorus in the aquatic environment and their potential effects on living organisms has become an issue of growing concern. More stringent environmental discharge limits help drive the need to remove and recover these resources. This session will look at the challenges faced by the water industry to address the management and treatment of priority substances, emerging chemicals and phosphorus in wastewater.

5.15pm Innovation pitch session

8.30am Keynote addressesalex Wonhas, Executive Director, Environment, Energy and Resources at CSIRO gavin Hanlon, Deputy Director General, Water, at the Department of Primary Industries NSW

9.10am Session 5: Commercialising innovations for the world water marketOver the last few decades, the Australian water sector has experienced a wide range of challenges such as extreme droughts and floods. Despite the climate variability, Australia has managed to adapt and subsequently adopt innovative solutions to become more resilient. This experience is becoming increasingly valuable to the rest of the world which is facing similar water challenges partly due to our changing climate. As a result, the Australian Water industry is now considered a leader in water management practices. This session will highlight some of the key national initiatives that support the export of Australian know-how to the rest of the world water sector.

Speakers include: Dr Paul Smith, International Manager, Australian Water Association grantley Butterfield, Manager, Australian Water Partnership

10.15am Innovation pitch session

10.35am Morning break in Innovation Hub

11.05am Session 7: Digital water management improving utilities efficiencyPresented by WSAA

Water Utilities are under pressure to find efficiencies in their networks, reduce operating costs and encourage water conservation. A large part of the solution is emerging from big data and the application of integrated digital productivity systems across the organisation. The potential reaches right across the utility, to further engage the customers.

adam Lovell, Executive Director, WSAA

11.45am Innovation pitch session

12.05pm Session 8: Efficiencies across industrial water management Depending on their sector, industries need water in various amount of quantity and different levels of quality. To assess and manage water and waste in industrial applications, it is important to understand the increasing need to improve process and waste management, and develop site specific solutions that are practical. This session will provide an overview of best practices and challenges faced by industry sectors to efficiently manage water and wastewater across the whole industrial cycle.
