Times Of Worship

THE PASTOR'S PENThe events of this past week have shifted priorities and values for many of us. The flooding of Larimer, Weld, and Boulder Counties has caused all of us to re-evaluate who we are and what we believe. I am proud that FUMC has shown what a vital faith community we are by providing the means for volunteers to be housed, making flood buckets and health kits and giving of themselves to those who need a listening ear and a helpful hand. Christ is alive and among us through all our actions. Thanks be to God for your good works in the world.

Our work in the name of Christ is representative of a vital faith; of a desire to embody God’s love and mercy in the world through our dis-cipleship; and of a strong commitment to change lives and transform the world. We are the people of FUMC and we have much to offer the world in Christ’s name.

I believe the question before each of us though, is how do we continue that witness in 2014? How do we prepare for the generations of believ-ers yet to follow us? How do we pass along this witness to others in a way that bears fruit? How do we continue to be a vital congregation?

There are many ways we can witness to God’s love active in our lives. We can choose to increase our attendance at worship and worship more frequently. We can choose to actively invite others to church with us. We can choose to nurture others by being a part of our caring friends minis-try. We can make a commitment to growth in our personal discipleship through Bible studies or a small group experience. We can choose to serve in any one of several ministry opportunities that help to change lives in our community. What shape your discipleship commitment takes is up to you.

As we consider our individual discipleship commitments for 2014, I hope we would prayerfully consider how we each might increase our witness through our prayers, our presence, our tithes, and our service. There is so much to be done…so many who need to see God’s love. How will you do your part?

In Christ’s love, Rev. Dr. Jane

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY OCTOBER 6Please consider making a scholarship gift to United Methodist university students on World Communion Sunday, October 6th.

Serving others is important to Erin Adachi-Kriege. The sophomore at the Univer-sity of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., makes it a point to be involved in mission work.

Her hometown congregation, Epworth United Methodist Church, Berkeley, Calif., planted the seed. "I attended church every Sunday and was there for other activi-ties throughout the week," Adachi- Kreige recalls. "Church was, and still is, a very big part of my life."

As a teen, she served as a youth group leader. "The church encouraged me to be-come involved in my community," she says.

While Adachi-Kriege has not decided on a major, her studies likely will center on service. "I will want to have a career," she notes, "where I can be active in my com-munity and work to benefit it as much as possible."

Adachi-Kriege, who is Caucasian and Filipino, was grateful to receive the World Communion Sunday Ethnic Scholarship.

World Communion Sunday calls the church to reach out to all people and model diversity among God's children. The offering benefits World Communion Scholar-ships, the Ethnic Scholarship Program and the Ethnic In-Service Training Pro-gram.

SPIRITUAL GIFTS CLASSWould you like to understand yourself better? How does your personality type affect your relationships with God and others? Why are some devotional disciplines and patterns better suited to you than others? What can you do to enrich your personality and allow God to use you more fully for His kingdom purposes? If you are seeking answers to these questions, this Spiritual Gifts class is for you. The personality assessment used here is the widely accepted Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® instrument. The author, Dr. Reg Johnson analyzes the various personality types with actual case studies from Scripture and offers biblically based guide-lines to manage personality vulnerabilities and affirm personality strengths. The goal is spiritual growth. This two-part class will be offered on December 2nd and 9th at 6:30 – 8pm.

If you are interested in this class, please sign up at the Ask Me desk or contact Cynthia Paquette at 970-568-8690 or [email protected].

Date: Wednesday, October 23rd Time: 6:30-7:30 p.m.Place: TBATitle: Stress-Less Holiday Strategies Description: Have you ever heard anyone complain they felt too much gratitude or too much joy during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons? Rather, many of us experience too much stress during these times. Holiday distress is the natural consequence of too-high expectations (ours & others) and traditions of excess (activities, food & drink, forced "togetherness," etc.).

Cindy Swindell will facilitate this lively and interactive discussion of ways to create a less stressful holiday season this year! Cindy is a member of FUMC Loveland, a Koinonian, and a licensed psychologist who works with students at CSU in Fort Collins.

GROW Navigating the Bible study for 3rd Graders. If your child is in 3rd grade this year, he/she is invited to participate in a special class just for them, Navigating the Bible. In this nine week introduction to the Bible our children discover the Bible’s importance, where it came from and how to use it. Children in 4th and 5th who have not had the opportunity to take this class are very welcome! Parents are also invited to be involved! On Bible Sunday, November 17, participants receive their own Bibles during worship. If you and your child would like to participate, please come to the contact Rev. Lauren, 970-667-0876, [email protected].

Nursery Staff will meet on October 10 at 5:45 pm for their monthly discussion of nursery happenings and needs. Children’s Council will meet at 6:30 pm in the balcony. Be sure to read chapter 5, God is Loving, from “The Good and Beautiful God.” Be ready to celebrate Rev. Lauren’s birthday!!

SERVERecently in Mid Week Mania, our Discipleship Small Group for children on Wednesday night, we talked about how we worship God and one child contributed by saying, “Worshiping God looks like helping others.” This year our kids will be participating in the Amazing Grace Race of service. Helen Goody has developed a journey of mission across the world for our kids. They will stop in the Palestine, Tanzania, United States, China and re-

turn to Loveland as they serve God through mission projects focusing on the main areas of dire need: food, water, health care, education, income, and shelter. Earlier this summer, we studied Sierra Leone and their need of clean and accessible water in Sunday school and VBS. Our first stop this fall is Palestine and the Urban Gardens Project. We will be encouraging children to collect the facts about this project, make offerings and remember the UGP in their prayers. God calls us to serve those in need (Matthew 25: 31-46) and we are responding to that call in our Amazing Grace Race!

Participants can expect to: learn how to gain positive control of a classroom, while raising the level of student responsibility; learn how to teach students to think for themselves; and internalize discipline instead of being dependant on external control. (Student centered discipline, not teacher centered.) Lunch and child care will be pro-vided. Registration cost is $20.00 which covers lunch and workshop materials. The Financial Beat by Jim Corlett

l FINANCE: August total revenue was considerably less than the amount that was budgeted. This was offset by total expenses also being significantly less than what was budgeted. The numbers for the month were as follows: Revenue was $46285, approximately $4,896 less than the budgeted amount. Actual expense was $42,923, which was under budget by about $11,523. The large lower than expected expense number was due to not having the expense of Rev. Brian’s salary and benefits. These totals actually result in a surplus for the year of $812.

Aug 2013 Year - To - Date Budget Actual Budget Actual Revenue: $51,181 $46,285 $437,617 $424,641 Expenses: $54,446 $42,923 $446,916 $423,829 Surplus / Deficit: ($ 3,265) $3,361 ( $9,298) $812

l BUILDING MORTGAGE FUND: A total of $2,388 was collected for the building in August and a payment was made to the foundation for that amount. Payment called for $2,799.95, so for the 3rd consecutive month since the foundation refinanced this debt, we were unable to send the full payment. Foundation is fine with that since we have sent so much extra in previous months.

BUILDING FUND LOAN STATUSAs Of 8/31/2013

Original Loan Amount August Payment Current Loan Balance $ 870,000.00 $ 2,388 $91,243.34

l SOCIAL & MISSION OUTREACH: An additional $1,158 was collected for the Sr. Hi. youth mission trip. Also $2,138 was collected for the Pastor’s discretional fund. $315 was given to Angel Paws / HALO. Next, the children’s Sunday School fund took in $335. A total of $563 was collected and sent to Steve and Alene Burgert in August. Those are the highlights for the month.
