Khallikote Autonomous College is one of the oldest colleges of Odisha, established in the
year 1856. The Department of English was established in the year 1878. The Department
became P.G Department of English in 1963.Along with English Honours and P.G.classes, the
department also takes up “Compulsory English” classes for Arts and Science streams. It also
engages the Alternative English classes for Arts, Science and commerce UG classes. The
department also takes up Soft Skills under SEC II for fourth semester English Honours batch.

Currently the department has two senior Associate Professors - Dr.Rachana Padhi (HOD) and
Dr.Padmini Sahu. For the 2018-19 academic session, the department selected four Guest
Faculties- Smt. Chinmayee Sahu, Mr. Pabitra Kumar Swain, Mr. Rajan Kumar Behera and
Smt. Madhusmita Swain. All the four Guest Faculties had prior teaching experience and an
excellent track record. The department also had the privilege of the utilising the expertise of
senior visiting faculties Dr.Girija Shankar Mishra and Prof. Raghunath Senapati.

The department maintains a Reading Room with hundreds of valuable books especially
contributed by retired, erstwhile great teachers of this department Dr.Chinneswara Rao and
Dr. D P Mohapatra. There is a broad space for wall magazine where the students are
encouraged express their creativity through writings, drawings, and so on. The department
also subscribes one English daily, weekly employment news and a few social magazines for
the use of students.
The department organizes various events throughout the year that include cultural gatherings,
seminars and competitions. Every year the department also organizes several competitions
like Elocution, Picture composition, Recitation, Essay writing andLiterary quiz which the
department students participate enthusiastically. The winners are awarded prizes on the
Annual Function day by the Chief Guest.
The department continues with its tradition of celebrating the Welcome Function in the
month of August, Annual Function in the month of February and Farewell Party in the month
of April along with Ganesh Puja and SaraswatiPuja.
Apart from these events the Department has been organising Seminars under “Extended
Lecture Series” every year since 2014. Experienced and renowned teachers from the field of
English Literature are invited to give a talk for two hours on a topic of their choice from the
syllabus. The lectures end with an interactive session with the speakers.
For the past two sessions in succession the Department has been organising a picnic cum
Study Tour in the last week of December to a scenic place close to the city limits. Such
informal get-togethers strengthen the bond between the students and the faculty thus
improving the productivity of the department on the whole.
Student Acheivements:
The students of our department also participate and win in many inter- and intra- college
level competitions and district, state and national level competitions, thereby they bring pride
and glory to our department.
