DIRECTIONAL TOOL

The Spear-Zit wood drill bit is a perfect diamond shaped headdrill bit, allowing the user to drill at any angle. They are fullyguaranteed against breakage, and easily field-resharpenable witha file.

Hint: Use any 3/8" Spear-Zit bit as a pilot bit for hole saws tocut holes from 9/16" to 2 5/8" diameter through a top or bottomsingle plate, with an “up-to-6-ft.-long” shaft hole saw!

Applications: Any wood drilling application, at any angle;will not catch on and unravel carpet, will go through knots and nails.

Because the spear shape of the head will prevent it from walking,use the directional tool to align the head of a 60" or 72" flex bitin the desired direction.

WIRE BITSThe wire bit is a .047" spring wire 36" long that can be cut (at an angle) any length to make it the smallest “reference” bit.

Applications: Its primary application is to be used as a referencepoint to measure from when having to drill in a specific wallcavity (i.e. drilling down through top plate in wall with stapledbat insulation, up from basement in wall with blown-in cellulose or Styrofoam insulation). STEEL FISH WIRES

Unlike the LBS pocket retriever, the Hook-Zit is flexible, beingmade of spring steel, .072" in diameter. The small hook at one endand the larger “L” shape at the other end, are faced the same way,so you always know which way the “fishing” hook is facing, evenin blind fishing conditions.

Applications: The mini hook end is designed to fish ball chainor wire inside a wall, while the larger “L-shape” hook end is morefor fishing a ball of wires in a restricted space, i.e., inside a panel.

In pre-wiring situations, the 18" or 36" Hook-Zit is ideal to pullwire from stud to stud, even 7 feet high, without the use of a stepladder. See pages 37, 38, 39.

An economical, yet limited, version of the fiberglass push/pullrods, the spring steel fish wires are offered in different diameters,depending on the “flex” required. Each fish wire has a centered eyelet at each end to attach wire or pull cord.

The model CZ-30L is made of luminescent epoxy fiberglass rods(stronger and slightly stiffer) that truly glow in the dark after being“charged” in full light. The luminescent rods are interchangeablewith the regular green rods.

Multiple accessories are designed for specific applications:

FISHTIX WIRE & CABLE KIT

FIBERGLASS FISH TAPEProbably the first fiberglass fish tapes that retain their memory tostraight. Made of opaque epoxy fiberglass, the YFTs have a diameterof .110", making them capable of handling a much sharper bendthat the green fiberglass rods or even the luminous ones. (Initiallydesigned to handle a 90 degree bend–not elbow–in a 3/4" conduit).Offered in three different lengths (10-ft., 15-ft., 30-ft.), these fiberglass fish tapes have a bullnose at each end so wires can bepulled from either direction. The 30-foot is also available with the

Creep-Zit wisp head. Each model is coiled in a PVC storage case,easy to carry over the shoulder, making it easier to handle in crowded places.

When pulling wire we recommend attaching a pull cord or fishline first.

FISHING WIRES INSIDE WALLS

In the section to follow, we have addressed some of the mostcommon situations facing wire/cable installers. Listed are Thebasic tools required for the best and fastest results, brieflyexplaining how to proceed. IN EMPTY (INSIDE) WALLS1. DOWN, FROM THE TOP PLATE TO THE BASE OF THE

WALL, ON CONCRETE FLOOR

How to proceed:1. In the attic, drill a hole in the top plate with the selected drill

bit (Spear-Zit, Bell Hanger, or Pro-Bore®).2. Attach the “stop ring” to one end of the ball chain of the

WR24; drop the chain in the drilled hole.3. In the room, remove the baseboard and drill a hole at the

base of the wall.4. Bend the flexible retriever of the WR24 and insert in the

hole. Move it left to right until the magnet catches the ballchain.

5. Bring the ball chain to the hole; with the LBS (or the Hook-Zit 9") pull the chain out. Attach the wire to the chain. (If pulling coax cable or large wires, attach a nylon PullCordto the chain, then the cable to the PullCord.)

6. From the top plate, pull the ball chain and the wire. (Hint: with concrete floors, run the wire behind the baseboardor between baseboard and tack strip if there is carpet.)

2. DOWN, FROM THE TOP PLATE TO THE CRAWLSPACE OR UNFINISHED BASEMENT

How to proceed:1. In the attic, drill a hole in the top plate with the selected drill bit.2. Attach the “stop ring” to one end of the ball chain of the

WR24; drop the chain in the drilled hole.

3. Instead of pulling down the molding, this time drill upthrough the bottom plate from the basement or crawl space.

4. Keep the flexible handle of the WR24 almost straight, withjust a light bend on the magnet side. Insert the drilled holeand fish the ball chain. Proceed as above.

3. MULTIPLE CABLE RUNS, DOWN FROM THE TOPPLATE TO LOWER FLOOR(S)

How to proceed:1. First select the smallest Drill-Eze bit size that will accom-

modate your cable run. Start drilling through the top platefrom above, having selected the 2-ft. shaft.

2. Pull the bit back to you and replace the 2-ft. shaft by thesmallest next size up (4- or 6-ft.) that will let you reach thenext "plate" inside the wall.

3. Once you have drilled through the second plate, pull thebit back to you or add to the shaft the smallest extensionthat will let you drill through the third "plate".

4. Use extreme caution when drilling the second or followingplates in order to avoid drilling through the wall; it is sug-gested to "rest" the shaft (or extension) against the wall ofthe first hole.

5. Once you have reached the lower destination point, attachto the end of the last extension a nylon PullCord. If pullingmultiple cables or pre-connected ones, we recommend theuse of the PullSleeve.

6. From downstairs, pull the bit, the nylon PullCord andcable will follow.

IN WALL WITH STAPLED BATINSULATION1. DOWN, FROM THE TOP PLATE TO THE BASE OF THE

WALL, ON CONCRETE FLOOR

How to proceed:1. Use the StudSensor to locate the inside edge of the stud (or use

the TriScanner to locate the stud and check for hot electricallines along the stud).

2. Cut a 4" Wire Bit and at the inside edge of the stud, drillthrough the ceiling, where it meets with the wall. Remove thedrill motor, leaving the wire bit poking through the ceiling.

3. In the attic, using the wire bit sticking up as a reference,measure 3/4" and drill a hole (use Spear-Zit or Bell Hanger).You will be right in the void between the dry wall and the stapled insulation.

4. Drop the ball chain of the WR24 in the drilled hole.5. In the room, first, remove the wire bit (the hole is so small

that it will remained unnoticed), then remove the moldingand drill a hole at the base of the wall. Insert the flexible handleof the WR24 and bring the ball chain to the hole. Pull thechain with the LBS (or Hook-Zit).

6. Attach the wire to the chain and pull from the attic.

2. DOWN, FROM THE TOP PLATE TO THE CRAWLSPACE OR UNFINISHED BASEMENT

How to proceed:1. Use the StudSensor to locate the inside edge of the stud

(or use the TriScanner to locate the stud and check for hotelectrical lines along the stud).

2. Cut a 4" wire bit and at the inside edge of the stud, drillthrough the ceiling, where it meets with the wall. Remove thedrill motor, leaving the wire bit poking through the ceiling.

3. In the attic, using the wire bit sticking up as a reference,measure 3/4" and drill a hole. You will be right in the voidbetween the dry wall and the stapled insulation.

4. Drop the ball chain in the drilled hole.5. Instead of pulling the molding in the room, this time drill up

through the bottom plate from the basement.6. Keep the flexible handle of the WR24 almost straight, with

a light bent on the magnet side. Insert in the hole and fishthe ball chain. Attach the wire to the chain and pull fromthe attic.

IN WALL WITH INSULATION WITH MOISTURE BARRIER1. DOWN, FROM TOP PLATE TO BASE OF WALL ON

CONCRETE FLOOR… OR… TO CRAWL SPACE ORUNFINISHED BASEMENT

How to proceed:Same procedure as for Stapled Bat Insulation.

2. DOWN, FROM THE MIDDLE TO THE BASE OF THEWALL, ON CONCRETE FLOOR

How to proceed:1. Use the SSZ9 StudSensor to locate the middle between two

studs and mark the wall.2. Using a small pointed object, poke a hole in the dry wall at a

“down angle”, making sure not to pierce the moisture barrier.

3. Attach the WNH-1 to the bullnose of the LZsec and enter itthrough the hole, in the wall, between the drywall and themoisture barrier, until the bullnose touches the bottom plate.

4. Having dropped the base molding, run the LZO compassalongside the base of the wall to locate the LZsec magnet.

5. When the red arrow points at the wall, move the compassupward; if the white arrow points this time at the wall, youhave located the magnet, not a nail or a pipe.

6. Drill a hole (with Spear-Zit or Bell Hanger) right where thecompass located the magnet, and, with the LBS retriever (orHZ9 Hook-Zit), pull the ball chain out.

7. Attach the wire (or PullCord if running cable) to the ballchain. Pull the rod up.

IN EMPTY OR INSULATED WALLS,DOWN FROM THE MIDDLE OFWALL, TO CARPETED FLOORHow to proceed:1. Pull the carpet and padding from the wall; with a chisel and

a hammer, cut a 2" piece of the tack strip.2. Attach the BBZ Base-Boar-Zit to the high speed drill motor,

place it against the wall where you cut the tack strip and startdrilling, holding the unit firmly against the floor… The drillwill go through the molding, the drywall, up the bottom plate(note: always start the bit in a wood molding for it to go up).

3. Push and pull the bit several times to clean the hole, alwaysleaving the drill motor in forward. Remove the bit.

4. Attach the WNH-1 ball chain to one of the eyelet of the.047 fish wire provided in the Base-Boar-Zit Kit and insert inthe hole. (mark the fish wire with tape at the length you need)

5. When the fish wire is in the wall up to the marking tape,insert the HZ9 or LBS in the access hole and fish the ballchain; bring it to the hole and attach the wire or a PullCord.Pull the fish wire from the bottom.

6. Run wire between molding and tack strip (see fishing wireunder carpet, between molding and tack strip) or down to the basement (see fishing wire in crawl space, fromupstairs with carpeted floor); replace the padding and thecarpet; they will hide the hole in the molding and the wire.

IN WALL WITH BLOWN-IN CELLULOSE1. FROM UNFINISHED BASEMENT, UP TO THE MIDDLE

OF THE WALL

How to proceed:1. Cut a 4" Wire Bit and against the wall, drill down through the

floor; remove the drill motor, leaving the wire bit in the floor.2. In the unfinished basement, locate the wire bit sticking

through the floor and, with the Spear-Zit flex bit or Bellhanger and the directional tool, drill up the bottom plateimmediately behind the wire bit at an angle towards you.This will later direct the LZsec rod towards the front dry-wall. Drill with extreme care so the bit does not go throughthe wall! (Note: you could also use a right angle drill motor.)

3. Attach the WNH-1 1-ft. ball chain to the bullnose of theLZsec; push it up the drilled hole using a jabbing motion; therod will “ride” against the drywall. (Remember to mark therod at the length you want to stop.)

4. Back in the room, use the LZO compass to locate the magnetof the LZsec; poke a hole right in front of the magnet andwith the Hook-Zit 9" or LBS pull the ball chain. Attach thewire or a PullCord and pull the rod down from the basement.

2. DOWN, FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE WALL, TO BASEOF WALL ON CONCRETE FLOOR

How to proceed:1. With the StudSensor, locate the inside edge of the stud.

Using a Spear-Zit or Bell Hanger drill a hole in the wall ata down angle (it will direct the fiberglass fish tape on the backside of the wall cavity, against the stud).

2. Attach the WNH-1 to the bullnose of the fiberglass fish tape(rod) and enter it in the drilled hole, and push it down usinga jabbing motion.

3. Remove the molding, use the StudSensor to locate the insideedge of the same stud and drill a hole right next to the studedge. Use the Hook-Zit to grab the ball chain and bring it toyou. Attach the wire or a PullCord to the chain. Bring thefiberglass rod up.

INSIDE WALL, DOWN FROM IN-WALLSPEAKER OPENING OR UP FROMSYSTEM’S OUTLET OPENINGHow to proceed:1. With the StudSensor locate the two studs in between which

you will locate the speaker and mark the wall. 2. If installing a rectangular speaker, use the manufacturer’s

provided template and mark the contour (use the pocketlevel to guarantee perfect alignment).

3. Adjust the depth gauge of the Spira-Cut bit 1/8" longerthan the thickness of the material to cut and start the bit intothe material at a 45 degree angle. Slowly bring it to 90degrees and begin to cut clockwise (start and end at the topof the hole). Note: if cutting a round opening, adjust the circular guide of the Spiracut to the diameter to cut, thenproceed as above.

4. To run your cable, follow the procedures described above,based on the type of wall (insulation), you are dealing with.If you need to cut an opening for an outlet box proceed asfor rectangular speakers: if the box is already installed and

you need to cut the drywall covering it, plunge the Spirabitinside the box, guide it to the right until it touches the insideedge of the box: pull the bit out far enough so it is nowagainst the outside of the box and move the Spiracut counter clockwise.

BASEMENT WINDOW CONTACT OR IN-WALL SPEAKER, UP TOUPPER FLOORHow to proceed:1. From the window header, drill up into the cavity between

floor and ceiling using the Spear-Zit or Bell Hanger; beforegoing upstairs, measure the distance from the drilled hole tothe outside wall perpendicular to the one you are workingon. If installing in-wall speaker in the basement, use theSpiracut to cut the speaker opening (refer to applicationinside wall, down from in-wallspeaker or up from system’soutlet) then drill up into wall.

2. Upstairs, measure the same distance, from the same outsidewall in order to be locatedbetween the same floor joists.Pull the carpet and drill down,between molding and tack strip.

3. Attach the stop-ring to the ballchain of the WR24 and dropchain down the drilled hole; it will pile up on top of the ceiling.

4. Downstairs, insert the flexiblehandle of the WR24 in thehole drilled through the windowheader and fish the ball chainin a “twist-pull-back” motion.Bring the chain down to youand attach your wire.

5. Upstairs, pull the ball chain and the wire; from one corner ofthe room, send the YFT-10 fiberglass fish tape between thetack strip and the molding. Attach the wire to the bullnose ofthe YFT-10; pull it to its destination. If the upstairs floor isnot carpeted, run you wire behind the molding or up the wall.

CRAWL SPACE OR UNFINISHED BASEMENT

FISHING WIRE UNDER CARPET

BETWEEN BASE MOLDING ANDTACK STRIPHow to proceed:Pull the carpet in the corner of the room with a pair of needlenose pliers; feed the YFT fiberglass rod between the base moldingand the tack strip to where your wire is. Attach the stripped wireend to the bullnose of the rod. Pull the rod and the wire backfrom the corner of the room. Repeat the steps as necessary. Thespace between molding and tack strip is a “natural” channel torun wires, without having to move furniture.

BETWEEN CARPET AND PADDINGHow to proceed:1. If you must run wire under carpet, always run it between carpet

and padding to create a double cushion to protect the wire.Never staple or tape the wire as traffic could create damage tothe wire jacket resulting in a short.

2. Insert the rolled-up end of the UCT25 Under Carpet Tapebetween carpet and padding from the destination place of thewire; when reaching the other side, strip the end of the wireand attach it to the rolled end of the UCT. Roll back theUCT25 in its case as it brings the wire to you. (The roundedend of the UCT25 is for running over waffle type padding.)

Note: Do not staple or tape the wire; avoid traffic areas.

FROM UPSTAIRS, WITH CARPETEDFLOORSHow to proceed:1. Upstairs, pull the carpet and with Spear-Zit or Bell Hanger

drill a hole down, between molding and tack strip.2. Attach the stripped end of the wire through the hole of the

GR3 GloRod and flip it back on the flat of the rod (or passit through the cross hole of the bullnose of the GR3BB orGR3L).

3. Holding the wire and the GloRod together, pushed them inthe drilled hole; still holding onto the wire, jab the push rodto “quick release” the wire. Pull the rod back, the wire willstay.

4. In the crawl space, wearing the TSP-1 headlight if necessary,extend the GR12 Grabbit telescoping pole towards the dan-gling wire; grab it with the knifed edges side of the Ztip andbring the wire to you.

FROM UPSTAIRS, WITHUNCARPETED FLOORSHow to proceed:Same procedure as above, except that you will have to remove themolding to drill down and run your wire behind it or up the wall.

SMOOTH (SHEET ROCK) CEILINGMATERIALHow to proceed:1. With the SSZ9 StudSensor, locate two joists in between

which the device will be located and cut a hole a least 2" indiameter with Spiracut. Then measure the distance betweenthe hole and the outside wall parallel to the joists.

2. Upstairs, measure the same distance from the same outsidewall in order to be between the same joists, against an insidewall perpendicular to the outside wall.

3. Pull the carpet and drill a hole between tack strip and mold-ing (use Spear-Zit, or Bell Hanger). Attach the “stop-ring”to the ball chain of the WR24 and drop it in the hole. It willpile up on top of the ceiling.

4. Back downstairs, insert the in the hole cut in the ceiling andlocate the “pile” of ball chain. Direct the CZD Drag-Zitmagnet (screwed on a CZX section of the CZ-30) to thepile. Pull the rod slowly back to you so it will feed the ballchain to you .

5. Once you have the chain to you attach to it a minimum of10 feet of PullCord, the wire or cable to the cord.

6. Upstairs, pull the ball chain, the PullCord… The wire(or cable).

ROUGH (LATH & PLASTER) CEILING MATERIALHow to proceed:1. With the SSZ9 StudSensor, locate two joists in between

which the device will be located and cut a hole a least 2" indiameter with Spiracut. Then measure the distance betweenthe hole and the outside wall parallel to the joists.

2. Upstairs, measure the same distance from the same outsidewall in order to be between the same joists, against an insidewall perpendicular to the outside wall.

3. This time feed a length of thin gauge wire (or PullCord)down the drilled hole instead of the ball chain.

4. Back downstairs, screw the Ztip on the CZX rod of theCreep-Zit. With the Walleye, locate the wire (or PullCord)hanging down and grab it with the knifed edges side of theZtip. Bring it to you, tie the wire and proceed as above.

FISHING WIRES TO AND IN AN ATTIC1. LIGHT OR MEDIUM INSULATION,

UP FROM WALL DOWNSTAIRS

How to proceed:1. Using the Spear-Zit or Bell Hanger drill bit, drill a hole up

the top plate.2. Put the stripped end of the wire through the hole of the

GloRod and flip it on the flat of the rod. Holding both therod and the wire, feed it up the hole until it touches the roofline. Holding the wire, pull the rod back a little in order tocreate a loop in the attic. This can be repeated as often as youhave wire runs to bring up the attic.

3. In the attic (wearing the TSP-1 headlight if necessary) andfrom a comfortable and convenient location, extend the GR-12 (12-ft.) Grabbit towards the first looped wire. Withthe knifed edges side of the Ztip, grab the wire and bring itto you. The rod will fall back downstairs. Repeat for the following runs. Remember to collect the rods downstairs.

2. MEDIUM INSULATION, FROM A WINDOW HEADER

How to proceed:1. Using the Spear-Zit or Bell Hanger drill bit, drill a hole up

the window header and the top plate.2. Insert the 24" or 36" (depending on ceiling height) stainless

tube of the FEK-1 Fish-Eze Kit into the drilled hole until itits the roof sheeting, then pull back a little.

3. Remove the coiled fish wire of the Fish-Eze kit from its holderand feed it into the tube; the fish wire will coil in the attic,on top of the insulation.

4. Remove the tube and attach both the wire and a nylon lineto the eyelet of the fish wire (operating as a two person crew,you will use the nylon line to bring the fish tape back to youfor the next run). If operating alone, disregard the nylon lineand repeat the above steps using several coiled fish wiresrather than the same one over and over.

5. In the attic, extend the GR-8 or GR-12 Grabbit with Jtiptowards the first coiled fish wire. Hit it so the coils lay flatand won’t kink. Grab all the loops the wire with the Jtip so ituncoils as you bring it to you. Pull the fish wire, it will bringthe wire to you.

3. THICK INSULATION (18" AND MORE), FROM WALL BELOW

How to proceed:1. Using the Spear-Zit, drill a hole up through the top plate.2. Tie a 30-lb. nylon fishing line to one of the bullnose of the

YFT fiberglass fish tape and feed it in the drilled hole.When it hits the roof sheeting, pull on the nylon line. TheYFT will bend and follow the roof line.

3. You can now go in the attic and pull the YFT and the wire toyou or tie the wire to the YFT and pull it back down.

4. IN ATTIC, FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER

How to proceed:1. Attach as many of the CZ30 sections as you will need, using

pliers to snug the connectors together.2. With a simple flick of your wrist, the rods will jump up over

air ducts, lighting fixtures, cable raceways, etc.

3. The wisp head also raises the end of the Creep-Zit so it canslide smoothly over the grid dividers; turn the end of theCreep-Zit in your hand and the wisp head at the other endwill walk from side to side.

4. Attach the wire to the wisp head and bring it back to you, orto the bullnose at the back end.

5. If running coax, cat 5 cables or large speaker wires, we recommend you attach a PullCord to the wisp head or bull-noseof the Creep-Zit sections, then attach your cable (or thePullSleeve) to the PullCord.

1. LONG RUN (UP TO 125 FEET AT A TIME), SMALL ACCESS AREA, OPEN SPACE

How to proceed:1. Remove tile from false ceiling; aim the yoke of the

Sling-A-Line holding it HORIZONTALLY. Push the buttonon the reel to release the line and put the weight in theleather sling. Shoot.

2. At the other end, attach your wire to a length of PullCord,tie the PullCord to the lead weight and reel it back.

3. In areas where cable cannot be resting on the ceiling tiles,attach one 2nd Man Pulley above the drop ceiling to receiveyour cable.

Note: Do not remove the ceiling tile in the area you are shootingtowards: the weight could drop through the opening and causeinjury or property damage. If the line gets tangled over anyobject, pull the line very slowly with your hand to allow theweight to unravel itself.

2. MEDIUM RUN (UP TO 40 FEET), OPEN SPACE

How to proceed:1. Remove a tile, rest the wire on the outer “V” of the Grabbit

18’s Ztip.2. Push the wire to its destination by extending the Grabbit

section by section; if working a two person crew with twoGrabbits, the second installer, 40 ft. away from you, will grabthe wire with the knifed edges side of the Ztip and pull thewire in collapsing the sections of the Grabbit, one by one.

3. MEDIUM RUN, CROWDED SPACE

How to proceed:1. Attach as many of the CZ30 sections as you will need, using

How to proceed:1. When working above ceiling in occupied office, the YFT

30-E, contained in its round carrying case, can be maneuvered without risk of property or bodily damage.

2. To direct wisp head from side to side. Remove the YFTentirely from its case.

3. Because of its extreme flexibility, the YFT will require somepractice to “jump” over obstacles.

How to proceed:1. If working alone, attach at the end of the wire or PullCord

a weight (i.e., a golf ball), then “rest” the wire in the outer"V" of the Ztip.

2. Extending the Grabbit section by section, pass the wire(PullCord) and the weight over the pipe or beam and releaseit from the Ztip (the weight will keep the wire from fallingback).

3. Now, using the knifed edge side of the Ztip, pull the wireover the beam. Repeat the steps for the next beams.

Note: If working a two person crew with two Grabbits, ignorethe weight and just pass the wire to one another over the beam.If pulling multiple cables, tie them in the PullSleeve, and attachthe Pull-Sleeve to the end of the PullCord.

5. LONG RUN (100 FEET AND OVER), SEMI-CROWDED SPACE

How to proceed:1. The CF50 Fishtix is a heavy duty version of the Creep-Zit

kit, giving you the added rigidity required to pull runs of100 feet and longer, yetoperating the same way theCreep-Zit does (see mediumrun, crowded space).

2. When you have extendedthe Fishtix to its final des-tination, either attach themale bullnose to the lastsection, then your cable orPullCord to it and go tothe other end to pull it toyou, or replace the wisphead up front with thefemale bullnose, attachcable or pull cord, and pulltowards you from the backend. Hint: When pullinglong cable runs, it is sug-gested to pull at least onePullCord with the cable tofacilitate your work, should additional cable can be pulled ata later date.

3. In areas where cable cannot be resting on the ceiling tiles,attach one 2nd Man Pulley above the drop ceiling to receiveyour cable, pass the cable through the pulley first, thenattach it to the Fishtix's bullnose. If using cables on reel,place the reels on the Decoil-Zit, just below the ceilingopening.

How to proceed:1. Snap the hanging strap of the 2nd Man Pulley off the axle

pin and the retaining latch. Attach the pulley to the propersupport device, snap the strap back on the axle pin and inthe retaining latch, in the same manner, position a 2nd ManPulley at each horizontal turn, elevation change, each up anddown location.

2. Pull the cable through each 2nd Man Pulley.
