Title: Careers in Indiana Today

Summary:

Students will be able to describe growing career sectors in Indiana, and will be able to name some factors that contributed to the rise in certain careers. They will understand the difference between percent growth of an occupation and the actual number of job openings. They will use those skills to research a career of interest.

Time Frame: 35-45 minutes

Procedure:

Introduction to Indiana’s Growing Career Sectors

1. Ask students, “What careers do you think are growing the fastest or need the most employees in Indiana today?” Why do students think so? Write answers on board.

2. Say, “Depending on what numbers you’re looking at, different career sectors—or groups of related careers—are growing the fastest. However, lots of data shows that there are five career sectors that seem to be growing in our state. They are likely to need workers when you are done with college. They are:

Marketing, Sales, and Service

Health Science

Information Technology

Architecture and Construction

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (Write these five titles on the board.)

magazines about these career sectors (pg. 4, 5 and 6). 4. Students who are finished reading should write down

some careers they think fit in each of the five sectors. 5. Discuss the articles. Some example questions:

What is Marketing, sales, and service? What did you think it was before you read the article?

What is Health Science? What did you think it was?

Can you think of a job related to architecture and construction that does not involve working on a construction site? (designer, or drafter working in an office, etc.)

Can you think of a job related to healthcare that does not involve seeing patients? (advertising or marketing manager—just remind students of ads or billboards they have seen for hospitals; scientist; hospital administrator; medical records specialist; insurance salesperson, medical equipment manufacturer, etc.)

What are two kinds of technology careers discussed? (database designers, video game designer, etc.) What other technology careers can you think of? (students may also think of technology related to cell phones, agriculture, etc.)

What do you think the fastest growing career sectors were when your parents were in high school? Are any of them the same as today?

6. Ask what are the high school pathways for these careers.

Marketing, Sales, and Services: business administration (top of page 4)

Healthcare Sciences: biotechnology, dental healthcare specialties, and nursing (bottom of page 4)

Information Technology: programming and PC networking and support (top of page 5)

Architecture and Construction: commercial and residential facilities, construction trades, and drafting and design (top of page 6)

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics: engineering (bottom of page 6)

Learn about these Careers 7. Ask students to refer to the top of page 4 to discuss

Marketing, Sales, and Service careers: 8. Ask students what they believe workers in this field do.

(sell products, plan, manage, perform marketing functions, etc. page 4)

9. Ask how many students enjoy writing or art classes. Explain that students who enjoy these subjects may enjoy a position as a marketing specialist. (these individuals research an area to see if a product will sell and they design marketing campaigns)

10. Explain that these careers require varying education. (one-year certificates through master's degrees)

11. Ask student to refer to the bottom of page 4 to discuss Health Science careers:

12. Explain to students that taking care of people is a very important and high demand industry in Indiana. Say something like, “Jobs in the health care industry are expected to grow 23% by the year 2022.”

13. Ask students if they like to problem solve. Explain that in 2014, 99 new Indiana-developed medicines and medical equipment were approved by the USDA, providing solutions to many problems for many different people.

14. Explain that there are many different positions in the field that require different amounts of education.

15. Ask students if they like helping people, or if they like math or science. Tell students that there are jobs in this field to match each one of those likes.

16. Tell students, “Besides looking at percent growth in a career, you will also want to look at the number of job openings. When a career has a lot of job openings, it will be easy to find a job if you have the right training. When a career has no job openings, you have to wait for someone to retire or switch careers before you will find an available job. That’s not a fun situation.”

17. Ask students to refer to the top of page 5 for Information Technology careers:

18. Ask students to refer to the article to describe what careers in IT focus on. (design, development, support of hardware and software, etc.)

19. Ask if any of the students enjoy working with computer or video games, and explain that there are IT jobs that would fit their interests.

20. Include that most jobs in IT require at least an associate degree.

21. optional: briefly discuss Mia and explain that just like IT

careers, becoming a lawyer requires continual education as well.

22. Ask students to refer to the top of page 6 to discuss Architecture and Construction careers:

23. Ask students to briefly look at the article to learn about the various tasks that careers in this field include. (design, plan, manage, and maintain the built environment)

24. Ask students whether they would prefer to work in an office or the field? Then explain that you can do both in architecture and construction.

25. Tell students that most careers in this field require apprenticeships or workforce certificates.

26. Briefly discuss Cole and his dreams to design his own golf course.

27. Again, ask student to refer to the bottom of page 6 to discuss the final sector, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics:

28. Say, “Look at the article about STEM careers. What do STEM careers provide us with?” (scientific research and development services)

29. Ask students, “What are some different areas that STEM careers cover?” (physical sciences, social sciences, and engineering)

30. Tell students that if they are interested in STEM careers, they should enroll in challenging science and math courses to prepare for their college course loads.

31. Wrap up by reminding students that there are many things to consider when choosing a job. Of course, they should choose a job that they will be good at and enjoy doing. But students should also consider Indiana’s economy and whether there will be job openings when they graduate from college.

Student Activity

32. Ask students to turn to page 7 to complete the 'Career Outlook' activity. Give students a few minutes to finish.

33. Call on a few different students to share some of the answers asked in the table on page 7.

34. Ask students to share what they wrote for the difference between 'percent growth' and 'number of openings' for a career. (answers will vary but should roughly be the same.)

35. Discuss the answers to the rest of the questions on page 7.
