The Professional Golfers’ Associa-tion of British Columbia crownedthe first winners of their newest
event, thePINGGOLFPGAofBCPro-ProChampionship,withtheyoungpairofChill-iwackGolf&CountryClub’sJaredRempeland Sun Rivers Brad Clapp. The 36-holeevent,heldatNicklausNorthGolfCourse,offersgolfprofessionalstheopportunitytopairupwithanyothermemberofthePGAofBC,withthefirstroundabest-ballfor-mat,andthesecondroundascramble.
ClappandRempelbestedtheiropeningbestballscoreof63withasolidscramblescoreof62 togowire-to-wire to capturethechampionshipat17-underpar,withtheteamearning$2,000.ThewinfollowedanalreadyimpressivemonthofgolfforClapp,whonarrowlylostinaplayofftotoprankedCanadian Professional Adam Hadwin theweekprioratthePaineEdmondsVancou-verOpen.
Tied for second at 13-under par wastheteamofDarylStubbsandDavidBolton(66-63),andDaveZibrikandLindsayBer-nakevitch(65-64).Eachteamwalksawaywith $1,163 for their fine play. Alone infourth place at 12-under par with teamearnings of $825 was Doug Morgan andPhilJonas(68-62).
The Pro-Pro Championship was en-thusiastically sponsored by PING GOLFwith sales representatives Brad Thom-as and Terry Graham on site to presentthe trophy to the winners. Twenty-eightteams competed and enjoyed two daysof amazing weather, scenery, and hospi-tality at the Nicklaus North Golf Course,under the leadership of General Man-ager Mike Zuccolin and Director of Golf AndrewSmart.

A unique venue, the maintheatre, had its normal set-upof amphitheater chairs removedtoaccommodatehalf theshow’svendors. The other half of theshowwasupstairsintheWhistlerBallroom.
Theviewingswentaswellasplanned, with next year’s newfashiondesignsongranddisplay,aswellasexcitingnewproductsavailable for viewing and order-ing. Additionally, both industry
partnersandPGAofBCmembersgreatly enjoyed the energy andbuzz of the show, most notice-ably the addition of two eventsthat allowed additional opportu-nitiestonetworkandsocialize.
When DSG Fleet Solutionsheardof thenewCasinovenue,theyoffered tosponsor thefirstPGA of BC Poker ChampionshiponMondayevening.Thisevent,heldintheconferencecenter,sawamixtureofPGAofBCmembersandexhibitors(34playerstobeexact) show their true skills ofmathematics, patience, aggres-siveness,andtheoccasionalbluffto crown the inaugural winner.Congratulations to Levelwear’sBrettSaunders,whoearned thecrystalandproudlydisplayeditinhisboothfortherestoftheshow.

The Professional Golfers’ Association of BCclosed out its tournament season at theexclusive Richmond Country Club for the
CallawayGolfPGAofBCClubProfessionalChampi-onship.DefendingchampionDanSwansonfromtheGuildfordGolfCoursefollowedhisopeningroundof3-underpar69witha2-underpar70 tonarrowlydefeat Two Eagles Golf Course & Academy’s DeanClaggettbytwostrokesandwintheChampionship.
Duringthefirstround,Swansonwas1-overparthrough14holesandwasnotpleasedwithhisper-formance, but he quickly wrote a different storyshooting4-underonthelastfourholes(highlightedwithholingoutfrombehindatreeonthepar415th hole for eagle) to take the overnight lead by onestrokeoverClaggett.
Half-waythroughthefinalround,Swansonrolledina40-footputtonthepar39thholetoholdatwostrokeleadoverClaggettat6-underparheadingtothefinalnine.Afewholeslateratthe13th,atwoshotswing resulted as Swanson bogeyed and Claggettbirdiedtyingthembothfortheleadheadingtothefinalfiveholesat4-underpar.
Bothleaderswouldbogeythedifficultpar-314th hole, but aClaggett bogeyon the15th holewouldhavehimtrailingbyone.Claggetthadtosettleforparaftermissingashortbirdieputtonthe17thhole,leavingSwansonaonestrokeleadgoingtothe18th andfinalhole.
Onthebackofthegreeninthreeonthepar-518th, Claggett’s birdie attempt from the fringe slidbygivingSwansonachancetotwo-putttowin,buthecoollydrainedthe15-footerforbirdietocapturetheChampionshipbytwo.Swansonearned$2,400forthisvictory,withClaggettearning$1,650forso-lo-runnerup.TsawwassenSprings’MurrayPojefin-ishedthetournamentat2-underparandthirdplaceearning$1,100.OlympicView’sKevinMaxwell,whoplayedinthefinalgroupwithSwansonandClaggett,finishedinredfiguresat1-underparearning$925.DavidBoltonfromSavageCreekGolfCentreround-edoutthetopfiveearning$800.
ThePGAofBritishColumbiawouldliketothankAndyDexterandGrantObenwithtitlesponsorCalla-wayGolfwhowason-handthroughouttheevent,aswellasthehospitalityfromRichmondCountryClubforthewonderfullymanicuredgolfcourseanddeli-ciousmeals.TheeventhadthirtyofBritishColum-bia’stopClubProfessionalscompeteforthe$12,000purse.

CountryClubonMonday,October3rdtoawardJimGibsonwiththeprestigiousLifetimeAchieve-mentAward.ThishighestlevelofhonourisnotawardedeveryyearandhasonlybeenawardedfiveprevioustimesinthehistoryofthePGAofBC.
The award honors individuals who havemade outstanding contributions to the Asso-ciationoverextendedperiodsof timeandonequickscanofGibson’sgolfingresumemadehimanobviouschoiceforthePGAofBC.
Tohighlightafew,GibsonwasPresidentofthe BCGA for three years and was bestowedanhonorarylifetimeGovernor.GibsonwastheproudrecipientofthePGAofBC’sPatronoftheYearawardandheearnedthepositionofHon-oraryDirectorwiththePGAofBC.Gibsonwasalsothe formerDirectorofGolf,ClubCaptain,and Senior’s Club Champion at the esteemedCapilanoGolfandCountryClub.In2002,Gib-son received the Queen’s medal, one of only50givenoutinCanada.GibsonhascommittedhimselftotheRulesofgolfasGovernorfortheRoyalCanadianGolfAssociationforeightyearsandRulesChairmanforAmateurStatus.Hecur-rentlyhasbeenofferingrulingsforthePGAofBC’smostprestigiouseventsforoveradecade.
Gibson’s golf accomplishments are equallyimpressive as he has set three different golfclub’scourserecords,includinga62whichstillstandsatGleneaglesGolfClub.Hewasamul-tipleClubChampionwinneratSeymourGolf&CountryClubandfinished13thattheCanadianOpen,onestrokeaheadofhisgoodfriend,andfellow Lifetime Achievement honouree, StanLeonard.

We can learn much from those that have gone before us! This piece is written with the intent to highlight the accomplishments and contributions of many great golf professionals who are now retired or in the twilight years of great careers. Much can be learned from them and this is the essence of mentorship. ~ Barrie McWha
AlvieThompsonwasborninUnity,Saskatchewanapproximately75years
ago.HisgolfcareertookrootsatMarineDriveGolfClubintheear-lyfiftiesandin1954hefinishedsecondintheBCJunior.Thefol-lowingyearhewaslowamateurintheAlbertaOpenandlowqual-ifier in thePNGAChampionship.HewonboththeBroadmoorPro-Amand theSeymourPro-Am in1955asanamateur.
Alvie became a member ofthe PGA of Canada in 1957 asanassistantatMarineDriveGolfClub, working for the legendaryStanLeonard.In1959,AlviewontheBCAssistants’ChampionshippriortomovingtoTorontotobe-come the Teaching Professionalat the Northwood CC in 1960.That year he was runner-up toGeorge Knudson in the OntarioAssistants’Championshipandhealsowon theWishingWell Invi-tational in London, Ontario in aplayoffoverMoeNorman.
In 1962, Alvie was invitedtoplay in theCrosbyPro-AmatPebble Beach and he won hisfirst of three Manitoba Opens.Alvie also won the CanadianPGA Championship shooting acourserecord64inaplayoffwithGeorgeKnudsonandStanLeon-ard,beatingeachofthembyfiveshots!.LaterthatyearAlviepart-neredwithKnudsonrepresentingCanadaintheWorldCup,hostedbyArgentina.1962wasalsothe
yearAlvieachievedClassAstatuswiththePGAofCanada.
If 1962 was Alvie’sbreakoutyear,then1963confirmed he was therealdeal.AlviewontheMillar Match Play, (Ca-nadian PGA Match PlayChampionship) finish-ing as low qualifier andthen beating Al Baldinginthesemi-finalandPe-ter Hildrop in the final.Thatyearhewasinvitedto play in the Masterswhere he tied for 28th place,shooting71inthefinalround.
In 1964, Alvie wonhis second ManitobaOpen and finished runner-up toGeorgeKnudsonintheCanadianPGA Championship in Halifax.The following year, 1965, AlvieassumedtheHeadProfessional’sroleatWhitevaleGolfClubinTo-rontoandlaterthatyearhefin-ishedsecondtoWilfHomeniukinthePGAChampionship,heldthatyearinMontreal.
In 1967, Alvie moved overtotheBayviewCCinTorontoasthePlayingandTeachingProfes-sional. He played a number ofeventsontheoldCaribbeanTour.IntheVenezuelaOpeninCara-casheshot64inthefirstroundof the 72 hole event and wentontoloseaplayoffforthetitle.That sameyear he venturedofftoqualifyfortheUSTour(itwasnotcalledthePGATouruntillat-er)wherehefinished10thoutofafieldof112,finishingaheadofplayers like Tony Jacklin, OrvilleMoody,BobMurphy,DeanBemanandLeeElder.
In1968,AlviewontheMani-tobaOpen(again!)aswellastheFredericton Open and finished
second in the BCOpen and theOntario Open. He had the BestStrokeAverageontheCanadianTourandasaresultwas invitedtorepresentCanadaintheAlcanGolferof theYeareventheldatRoyal Birkdale GC in England.ThefollowingyearAlviefinished10thintheDoralOpeninFlorida.
In1970,Alvie’sfocusshiftedtotheClubProfessionalworldashe was appointed Head Profes-sionalattheHillsdaleGCinMon-treal(siteofthisyear’sCanadianWomen’s Open). He remainedthere through 1972 when hemovedbackhome toVancouvertobecametheHeadProfessionalatMarineDriveGC.Hehadgone‘full circle’. Alvie stayed at Ma-rine Drive for four years beforeswitching over to McCleery GCin1976wherehewastheHeadProfessionalfor18years.
AlvieearnedLifeMembershipstatuswiththePGAofCanadain2000 and come 2013, Alviewillbecomea50yearmemberofthePGAofCanada.

howfortunatehewasthathewasabletobearoundStanLeonardsomuchduringhis formativeyears.Alvie learned a great deal fromStan. That is the defininition ofmentoring, and Alvie passed onhis vast knowledge of the gameand the business of golf to Pro-fessionalssuchasourAssociationPresident, Derek Thornley, JimPringle(HeadProfessionalatSun-
shineCoastGC),PatDunn(HeadProfessionalatMcCleeryGC),MikeSmedstad (GM at Mayfair LakesGC),NormJackson(HeadProfes-sional / GM at Cowichan GC) tonameonlyafew.
All had the opportunity overthe years to work for, and learnfrom,oneofCanada’sfinestplay-ersandprofessionalsandarenow
mentoring those younger profes-sionalsundertheiremploy.
Alvie and his wife Donna arenow retired and living the goodlife on the Sunshine Coast. Al-vie still plays the occasionalgame of golf, and they doman-age to get some time in thewarmth down south eachwinter. ~ Barrie McWha

sentedbyuniPharm&MedicineCentrePharmaciesCharitableFoundationforthepastfouryears.Thisyear,BrettdecidedtoraisethestakesofhisGolf-a-ThonbygolfingasheattemptedtosummittheGoldenHinde,thetallestpeakonVancouverIslandat2,196meters(7,207feet).
OnSeptember16th,Brettbeganhis trekuptheGoldenHinde. Hestartedoff at thebaseofMountGoldenHindesupportedbyhisfather,Ken,andfriend,DerekKilbourn.Bretthadpackedhis8iron,asmallhittingmatandfourdozenbiodegrad-ablegolfballsmadeofcompressedwood for thejourney.
Brettandhistwomanteamspentthreedayssummiting this impressive peak. Brett playedgolfshotsoffhismatastheyhikedup,butinar-easwhereitwasimpossibletogetashotoff,hebouncedhisgolfballonthebladeofhis8-ironashehikedalong.Bytheend,Brettfeltthathehadtakenwellovera1,000shots!
Brettcontinuedgolfingtowithin680metersofthetopwheretheywereforcedtostopasitbecametoodangeroustocontinueduetotheweather.
Duringthethreedayexpedi-tionthethreemenexperiencedwhiteoutsofsleetand100kmstrong winds with the poorestweatherexperiencedduringthenight.
“The wind was so loud on the second nightit sounded likea train coming throughour tent,”Brettcommented.“Thesoundwasamazing!”
AfterparticipatingintheannualPGAofBCGolf-A-ThonforALSoverthepastfewyears,Brettwaslookingforawaytogeneratemorebuzzandexpo-sureforthisimportantfundraisingevent.
