Let’s take a look at how to ensure your space is safe and how to use the Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale (ECERS-3) to meet best practice standards.

TEACHING DUAL LANGUAGE LEARNERSTHURSDAY, APRIL 28CDA GOALS: 5KAITLIN CUTTRELL, INSTRUCTORAn increasing amount of children have different home languages, which means that the children need to be supported in both English and their home language in the classroom. TAKING A CLOSER LOOK AT THE NJ BIRTH TO THREE EARLY LEARNING STANDARDS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6Intended for use by families, child care providers, early childhood teachers, people in the community, and policymakers, The New Jersey Birth to Three Early Learning Standards provide a common framework for understanding and communicating developmentally appropriate expectations for infants and toddlers. These standards are based on research about what children should know (understand) and do

(competencies and skills) in different domains of learning and development. This workshop will introduce the goals and framework of The New Jersey Birth to Three Early Learning Standards and discuss their intended use to best support quality curriculum, instruction and assessment in early care and education programs. *Participants are encouraged to bring their own copies of The New Jersey Birth to Three Early Learning Standards, if they have them. Available: www.nj.gov/education/ece/guide/stadards/birth/standards.pdf http://www.nj.gov/education/ece/guide/standards/birth/ standardsSP.pdf (en espanol) USING ITERS-R FOR PROGRAM IMPROVEMENTWEDNESDAY, JANUARY 20The ITERS-R (Infant Toddler Environmental Rating Scale- Revised Edition) is an extremely useful tool in helping centers set up the infant-toddler environment and implement best practices according to the highest quality standards. Participants will receive a brief overview the ITERS subscales/items and important terms, identify implementation strategies that enhance your classroom/program practice, and engage in writing action steps for program improvement. *Participants are asked to bring a copy of the ITERS-R with them, if possible.

ITERS SUBSCALE: SPACE & FURNISHINGSWEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27 In this second session of the series, we discuss how to effectively evaluate the quality of the space and furnishings of the environment. The amount of space in the room where the children are cared for most of the day is important because it affects both the efficiency of the staff as they try to meet the many routine care needs of infants and toddlers, and the number and types of play activities the children can engage in at the same time. Insufficient space can lead to conflicts among children due to overcrowding, and can also cause limitations in the program because materials easily become disorganized or must be minimized if the space in which they are used is cramped. The items we will examine specifically will be: indoor space; furniture for routine care and play; provisions for relaxation and comfort; room arrangement; and display for children. *Participants are asked to bring a copy of the ITERS-R with them, if possible.

ITERS SUBSCALE: PERSONAL CARE ROUTINES WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 3In this third session of the series, we discuss how to effectively evaluate the quality of the personal care routines: greeting/departing; meals/snack; nap; diapering/toileting; health practices; and safety practices. Three major topics considered with these items are: infants’ and toddlers’ social/emotional needs, ensuring safety, and providing for communication among adults that is necessary for each child’s well-being. *Participants are asked to bring a copy of the ITERS-R with them, if possible.

ITERS SUBSCALE: LISTENING & TALKINGTHURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11During the infant/toddler years, the ability to understand language, and eventually to use language, is developed in the context of meaningful social relationships with the significant adult in the children’s lives, their parents and caregivers. In this fourth session of the series, we discuss how to effectively evaluate the major aspects of staff-child communication needed by children from birth through 30 months of age. *Participants are asked to bring a copy of the ITERS-R with them, if possible.

ITERS SUBSCALE: ACTIVITIESTHURSDAY, FEBRUARY 25 In this fifth session of the series, we discuss how to effectively evaluate the quality of the activities, materials, and opportunities which children can access for much needed practice of their rapidly developing fine and gross motor skills. The items we will examine specifically will be: fine motor activities; active physical play; art; music and movement; blocks; dramatic play; sand and water play; nature/science; use of TV, video, and/or computer; and promoting acceptance of diversity. *Participants are asked to bring a copy of the ITERS-R with them, if possible.

ITERS SUBSCALE: INTERACTIONWEDNESDAY, MARCH 9In this sixth session of the series, we discuss how to effectively evaluate the quality of the attention and guidance given to children by the staff during all play and learning times. The items we will examine specifically will be: supervision of play and learning: peer interaction; staff-child interaction; and discipline. *Participants are asked to bring a copy of the ITERS-R with them, if possible.

ITERS SUBSCALE: PROGRAM STRUCTUREWEDNESDAY, MARCH 16 In this seventh session of the series, we discuss how to effectively evaluate the program’s schedule of daily activities in its dependability and flexibility to meet the individual needs of the infants and toddlers served. The items we will examine specifically will be: schedule; free play; group play activities; and provisions for children with disabilities. *Participants are asked to bring a copy of the ITERS-R with them, if possible.

ITERS SUBSCALE: PARENTS & STAFFTUESDAY, MARCH 22In this eighth session of the series, we discuss how to effectively evaluate the quality of the provisions that are offered to the parents of the program and the professional climate that exists within the program. The items we will examine specifically will be: provisions for parents; provisions for personal needs of staff; provisions for professional needs of staff; staff interaction and cooperation; staff continuity; supervision and evaluation of staff; and opportunities for professional growth. *Participants are asked to bring a copy of the ITERS-R with them, if possible.

FEEDING OUR CHILDREN WELL THURSDAY, APRIL 14 Foods, culturally, define us and make us not only part of our families but of society as well. With these strong emotional ties to our foods and the familial connotations they hold, the feeding our babies and toddlers can be an extremely stressful, and sometimes, sensitive topic. As adults who have control over what children eat, we need to be committed to nutrition, yet sensitive to family traditions and cultural variations; in this workshop we will discuss ways to achieve a healthy balance.

KEEP MOVING!!WEDNESDAY, APRIL 20 Gone are the days of sending our kids outside to play until dark! Children need unstructured active physical play for good development of the muscles, strength, endurance, and general movement skills, but, more importantly, it is necessary for cognitive development and positive emotional health. In the reality of our daily life where technology is everywhere, limiting screen time is not enough to get kids moving. This workshop will discuss how much daily physical activity children need and ways to make it happen. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes and be prepared to Keep Moving!!!

STABILIZING INFANT MENTAL HEALTHWEDNESDAY, MAY 11 Join us for a night of discussion on the importance of relationship-based support for children and families. Discussion will include how child care providers and parents are with infants is as important as what they do to support their infants’ wonderful capacities to form relationships. Strategies to support essential early capacities will be presented. We will discuss the concept, what happens early matters in the healthy development of Infant Mental Health.

WHY CAN’T YOU COOPERATE?!THURSDAY, JUNE 2 Does it seem like they just keep doing the same irritating behaviors again and again? How can you get them to stop?! This workshop explores reasons why their behaviors challenge us and strategies for supporting children so they remain curious and become successful learners while preventing their behaviors from negatively impacting your care routines.

PREVENTING SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME THURSDAY, JUNE 16 This workshop will discuss Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) and “The Period of PURPLE Crying”. Participants will discuss common myths about the syndrome, identify behaviors that increase the risk of SBS, and become familiar with actions and resources to communicate with families and help you reduce the infants’ risk of injury and death.

A POSITIVE APPROACH TO DISCIPLINETUESDAY, MARCH 15CINDY TEREBUSH, INSTRUCTOR Behavioral challenges are both a teaching and learning opportunity. We will discuss how to avoid power struggles and set realistic expectations for young children. When our expectations are age appropriate, we can learn how to be instructive rather than punitive. Discover what young children realistically can and cannot do, the benefits of “time in” rather than “time out”, the physiology of tantrums and more as we work to add to our understanding of behavior. Discuss how you can make discipline a positive part of teaching and raising young children.

MAKE EVERYDAY MOMENTS “TEACHABLE MOMENTS”WEDNESDAY, MAY 25 ANGIE DEFAZIO, INSTRUCTOR Babies by nature are extremely curious and learn by using their senses. They explore and discover by touching and mouthing objects, hearing voices and music, and seeing the colorful, fascinating wonder all around them. But the most important part of a child’s early learning experiences is you. It is through interactions and experiences with loved and trusted adults that babies begin to make sense of the world. In this workshop, we will learn how to capitalize on the moment of an unplanned event during the day as a learning opportunity for infants and toddlers.
