The CD player for professionals - created hy professionals

Professionals think and workdifferently. They live in a worldwhich holds little room forcomprom ises. Professionals areperfectionists who will not besatisfied with second rate solu-tions. But they also expect a lotof themselves, their work, andtheir tools. The most demand-ing requirements can undoubt-edly be found among audioand video professionals inbroadcast and music produc-tion. lt is precisely this groupwhom we help to shape the

trend of the <audio ageo: Weresearch, develop and thenproduce in-house those high-qual ity, professional productsfor [ascinating applications -and for the most magnificentsounds of this world.

Worldwide the compact disc is

fhe medium par excellence foroutstanding audio quality. lt is

rugged, convenient to handle, and economical. But this me-dium offers many additionaladvantages that can be ex-

ploited by clever utilisation ofthe subcode data recorded onthe disc. An even greater, al-most unlimited field of applica-tions is opened by the CD-Rand its recorder, such as theSTUDER D740.This is why CDs and CD-Rs arethe ideal sound recording me-dium of today and tomorrow -for creative and efficient workby radio and television studiosin on-air and post-productionapplications, and equally as

well for exacting disco work.

The versatility and fancy tricksof this modern technology canbe exploited only if the CDplayer supports all parametersand operating variants of CDs(red book) and CD-Rs (orangebook), and if it reliably masterstheir intricacies. Most impor-tant is thal lhe many equip-ment capabilities can usefullybe applied to the intended ap-plication. Function and timedisplays must speak a clearlanguage so that the work ofmoderators and audio engi-neers is not hampered by com-plex procedures.

The professional alternative:

Simplicity means more essentials

Professionality is also demon-strated by concentrating on theessential - and the perfectionin mastering this objective. One of the principal assets inthis connection is STUDER'svast experience as a pure audiomanufacturer and its decadesof worldwide contacts withusers of STUDER products.

User-friendliness is an attributeof growing importance in boththe audio and video media. lnthis respect, little, if anything, can be gathered from the tech-nical data - only the practicalexperience counts. This is whythe ergonomy and the displayconcepts for clear user guid-ance are even more importantto us than being the first onthe market. Many apparentlysimple concepts and easilyaccessi ble fu nction sequencesare often the product of timeconsum i ng developments.

The results, incorporated in theSTUDER D73O and D731 CDplayers, can be presented withpride. The desktop and rackversions are based on the sametechnology and their operatingergonomy and display con-cepts have been devised so asto make them practically iden-tical for both units.

The STUDER D730 compactdisc player can also be flushmounted into a console. Thedimensions are the same asthose of its predecessor, theSTUDER A730, which meansthat no modifications are nec-essary for replacing an existingunit.

Clarity, reliability and audio quality

Only rarely is unlimited spaceavailable for the audio equip-ment - the usual case is the(compressed 3 D arrangement>.OB vans are most often packedwith gear, and they also con-tain too many sources of heat.

The answer to such a siluationis the STUDER D731 , the 19"rack-mount version. Thismodel requires only two unitsof vertical rack space whichmeans that even more equip-ment can be installed in thesame space. For example, twoSTUDER 4725 or 4727 CDplayers can now be replacedby three new type DZ31 units.

Due to their low power con-sumption, the compact andcool D731 CD players can bestacked individually. Yet even

at a distance, visual contactremains optimal: The easilyreadable display, a label fieldfor lettering, as wellas an illumi-nated CD tray with a mirrorsystem to reflect the disc's rota-tion, will become pleasant triv-ialities on hectic assignments. The fact that the operating con-cept and the display are identi-cal to the stationary D730model is a positive contribu-lion to ensure error-free pro-gramming.

The operating concept is basedon extensive practical experi-ence. The main functions andthe location of the correspond-ing controls, however, are stillthe same as on the 4230. Theunique DISC RECOCNITIONfeature for at least 100 mostfrequently played CDs, includ-

ing their stored CUEs (up to 3start and stop cues), has alsoremained unchanged. Lastly, the clearly structured controlpanel is confidence inspiringand minimizes the familiariza-tion time.

Excel lent operati ng ergonomy

Visible CD, labeling facility, and a monitor with switchable compressor.

Key feature of the new con-cept: ln spite of its comprehen-sive facilities, operation has re-mained simple and clear. Akeyboard buffer permits directinput, i.e. it is not necessary towait for the table of contents(TOC) to be read into memory.

The D730 is equipped with a

very quiet loading lid, and theCD tray of lhe D73l moves inand out quickly and silently.Neither model requires anadapter for singles.

A multifunctional cue wheelhas been provided for easyediting. This feature is imple-mented with an optical sensorand allows accurate and veryfast searching in one-handedoperation. The wheel is di-vided into two segments: TheDIAL mode (top) and theSHUTTLE mode (bottom), thelatter becoming activated for+80" when the springy detentat +90o is overcome. The DIALmode permits frame-accuratesearching within a window. Asequence (either 30 frames orone track only) is continuallyrepeated before the cue point. The SHUTTLE mode is also anaudible search function, how-ever, it shifts the search win-dow in either direction at pro-gressive speeds up to superfa st.

With the START-REVI EW-E N Dkeys it is possible to prelistento the start and end cue points(e.g. before going on air). lfboth keys are pressed simulta-neously, one can even listeninto the middle of the track.

High-quality displays make work a pleasure

Easy-to-fol low, clear operatingsequences and a meaningfuldata and feedback display gohand in hand. The 2-line LEDdisplays of the D73O and D731CD players give a perfect read-ing that is not impaired by anyviewing angle problems. lndimly lit rooms the light inten-sity of the displays can be re-duced (50%). ln addition to thetwo 12-character LED lines, thedisplay faci I ities comprisenearly 30 color-coded LED seg-ments and function indicators.

The displays are particularlyeasy to read because active areonly those elements that arelogically connected to a cur-rent function. Even distractingleading zeros are suppressed. All important display elementshave dedicated functions. Theupper line always shows thecurrent laser position on theCD, or the START CUE positionin edit mode. The lower line is

reserved for indicating the re-maining times up to the STOPCUE, or in edit mode, for theSTOP CUE position.

The display lines also supplyiniormalion in alphanumericplain text. This is essential, notonly for initialization proce-dures, but also for efficientmenu guidance in user func-tions.

For broadcast automation theSTOP CUE function produces atrigger signal for starting anotheraudio source (e.g. a secondCD player) or for initialing apreprogrammed seq uence.

The full gamut of professional facilities

With these new CD playersSTUDER introduces a numberof previously unknown func-tions. For example: lndividualsignals from the error correc-tion and servo systems are con-tinually monitored. lf the criti-cal threshold is exceeded thewarning CD QUALITY flashes.

Another example of the power-ful features is the indication ofthe time remaining to an introend. An announcement canthus be finished exactly at thedesired moment because thedisplay produces an exactcountdown.

CD-R playback facilitySKIP [unclions, i.e. bypassingof sequences marked as invalidor the skipping of entire CD-Rtracks are no mystery for theDZ30 and D731 players. Withthe growing popularity of CDrecorders, these functions willbecome very important. Whena fixed-up CD-R (with TOC) is

reproduced with the SKIP PLAYmode activated, the remainingtime to the STOP CUE is auto-matically corrected. This is es-sential for a reliable count-down.

Conventional CD players haveproblems not only with theSKIP functions but also withplaying back CD-Rs that havenot been completely recorded,i.e. without TOC. But on theSTUDER D73O and D731 suchCD-Rs can be played withoutdifficulty. ln a quick scan theycreate a table of contents inmemory and then play theCD-R without TOC.

For everyday studio work - in all variations

The D730 and D731 CDplayers can be software config-ured for dillerent basic seltings. After a special power-on se-quence the menu level can beaccessed so that individual set-tings for display, user, key-board, interface and operation(e.g. simple player to make theunit perform like a conven-tional CD player) are possible.

The USER menu contains up to10 special functions that canbe selected and modified dur-ing operation, e.g. intro mode, skip play mode, time indica-tion, varispeed or light intensityof the display. This menu canbe activated directly by a spe-cial key. The individual func-tions can then be selected viathe.lO-key pad.

VARISPEED with a !10%speed variation is defined as aUSER function and can be seteither locally or with the re-mote control. When the VARI-SPEED USER function is se-lected, the values can bevaried digitally in O.2oh incre-ments via push buttons.

A fader and a VARISPEED keyare available additionally onthe DZ30 desktop version. With this key the operator cantoggle between the USER andFADER setting. When theVARISPEED USER function is

set to zero, this key serves as anonloff switch. ln case the USERfunction is set to any othervalue, this key serves as a tog-gle switch for changing be-tween two preset values.

Experience has shown that theremote control facility require-ments can be highly applica-tion specific. This is why theremote control concept of theSTUDER CD players D730 andD73.1 has been designed forutmost flexibility. Two ports areavailable for connecting aserial (RS 232) and a parallel(25-pin) remote control unit.Whether the commands areto be accepted from the localor from the remote control,or even from both, can be se-lected with the priority controlin a set-up menu.

The CD players can be con-trolled from a PC via the RS232interface, whereas the parallelinterface supporls various ver-sions from simple controls upto external full-key pads. A par-allel remote control (see illus-tration) with or without displayused for Ihe A727 or A730 CDplayer can also be connectedto the D730/D731.

Nof only built for hroadcast use

No matter how perfect theoperating panels and displaysare designed, they representonly one side of the coin. Thetrue face of the opposite side, the suitability in professionaluse, quickly becomes apparentwhen the CD player needs tobe integrated into the studiosystem. Specific audio connec-tions, synchron ization, faderand remote control require-ments exist which are impossi-

ble to satisfy by conventionalCD players that may pretend tobe ol professional design.

The connector panels of theDZ30 and D731 CD players arewell prepared for the studio pe-riphery. They are easily acces-sible and support all requiredinputs and outputs. Audio out-puts are available for directdigital connections (XLR) andfor analog signals in trans-

former balanced (XLR) and un-balanced (ci nch) configu rati-ons. The format of the digitaloutput can be configuredaccording to AES/EBU as wellas SPDIF. In addition to theaudio data, all subcode infor-mation from the CD (ISRC code, catalog number, etc.) is trans-mitted in the user channel ofthe digital output. The wordclock is coupled in via a

BNC/25 ohm terminal.

Highly stable, professional STUDER quality

ln professional audio applica-tions the reliability is of utmostimportance. The best technicalspecifications have only theo-retical value if a unit breaksdown during on-air operationor if it does not survive a shakytrip in an OB van. This appliesto CD players as well. Themoderator or DJ must be ableto rely on the editing and dis-play precision iI the music pro-gram or show is to become aflawless performance.

The basic approach to solvingprofessional requ irements hasbeen established at STUDERsome 40 years ago and is beingcontinuously refined eversince.

Highly rigid die-cast aluminumalloy chassis are used whereverthe precision and long-termperformance to the originalspecifications is important. Thebasic chassis of the new CD-drive mechanism has a suffi-ciently large mass for excellentshock resistance, but a smallmoving mass for exceptionalresponsiveness. The drive prin-ciple has remained unchanged:Balanced linear drive with play-free, low-friction bearings inother words the well-provenmoving coil principle in its mostadvanced design.

Typically STUDER, easy maintenance design, professional down to the smallest detailsA special siot is reserved for an option board. For future options from STUDER orfor user developments, all important signals and supply voltages are already availableon the connector (e.g. for QC version). For easy installation of peripheral connectoTs,the D731 is equipped with an additional biank cover plate on the rear panel.
