Scenario

You are walking across a park following a concert, and step in a hole, fracturing your tibia.

The friends that you are with can tell that the circulation to your foot is bad, and your foot is starting to get purple.

Fortunately, one of your friends has a cell phone and calls 911.

After 10 minutes of agony and becoming increasingly closer to fainting, you finally hear the sound of the ambulance.

You think to yourself how fortunate that you will get good emergency care immediately…

You and your family are taking your grandmother to the assisted living home across town.

Everyone is on edge about this move, and how grandma will feel about her new surroundings.

Is it Fair?

Page 19: Professional Appearance

“Personally, I don’t care if you’ve got a ring in your nose or five on your toes, don’t expect me to understand. It’s your body, and if you want to tattoo a heart on your forehead, it shouldn’t prohibit you from being a good athletic trainer.

Page 20: Professional Appearance

But here’s the reality…….

Page 21: Professional Appearance

When you walk into an athletic training room or any medical facility, you’ve got about two seconds to establish credibility. In an emergency setting, people don’t care about rights of expression; they care about whether or not you can take good care of them…

Page 22: Professional Appearance

“So if you want a nose ring or tattoo, be prepared to accept the fact that people may not trust you. Better yet, cover the tattoo and take out the nose ring [or tongue stud]. You may not like it, but [Athletic Training] ain’t the place to express your artistic self.”
