1. The decision of RTU concern to realization of the study program

Professional study program “Material technologies and design” for undergraduate BA

and master’s studies approved in Riga Technical university (RTU) by the decision of

RTU Senate since 28.05.2001., Senate council record Nr.459 (extract from Senate

Council record, appendix I). The exchange of the title of the study program, which

now is called, “material design and technology”, was approved by RTU Senate

Council on 29.10.2001 Senate Council record NR. 462 (extract from Senate Council

record, appendix II).

2. License for starting the study program

2.1. License for rights to realize the study program “material technologies and

design” –undergraduate professional studies in Riga Technical University, was

issued in July 12, year 2001, license NR. 04051-1. Issued until 12.07.04 (the copy of

license attached in appendix III).

2.2. License for rights to realize the study program “material design and

technologies” –master professional studies, was issued 28.02.02. license NR. 04051-

5. License issued until 28.02.05 (the copy of the license attached in appendix IV).

3. Liquidation of the study program

3.1. Professional undergraduate study program “material design and technology” (the

term of the license – 12.07.04) is coordinated with the accredited, professional study

program “textile and apparel technology” –attaining professional qualification:

technologist designer (study program accredited until 31.12.07. Accreditation card

Nr.023-437, issued in 04.01.02, its copy attached in appendix V)

3.2. The term of the license from 28.02.05. will provide an opportunity for the

students of the master’s program to finish their studies, therefore contracts regarding

continuation of the studies in another accredited study program or educational

institution are not yet signed.

5. Expenditure on advertising and informative campaigns

Information about study program is provided in RTU admission rules, in the

advertisement publications of the faculty, Internet home page (www.rtu.lv), study

program and informative materials are also included in publications of Latvian Craft

Chamber, in magazine “Lietaskoks”, “Jaunais Inženieris” (see advertising materials

attached in self-appraisal report, appendix VIII).

6. Perspective assessment of study courses 6. 1. Study program’s compliance to the standardsStudy program complies to the standards of the professional higher undergraduate

education, the law of the higher education, paragraph 55., 56., 57.

6.2. Results of employers’ surveysSurveys had made in the biggest Latvian enterprises such as Solution, Burda Moden Riga, joint stock company Bolderaja, AB virtuves, where are working designers technologists, who had graduated study course Craft Technologies and Design.The survey results show: In the clothing enterprises is requisition for designers technologists knowledge  

computer aided clothing modelling and designing, because enterprises has newest technologies and needs specialists.

In the wood working industry is requisition for designers, who can project buildings, furniture and interiors, employ newest technologies, including CNC machines.

In view of requirements of enterprises, university proffers to students the news programs of design.During studies students adopt comprehensive skills with software Corelgraphics, Adobe PhotoShop, AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, bCAD, Excel, Power Point, computer aided designing in environment of Graphis8, CAD/CAM system Lectra, KOPPERMAN and others.

7.1.Objectives and tasks of the study programs

7.1.1.Objectives and tasks of the professional bachelor study program

7.1.1.1. ObjectivesTo provide 5th level higher, professional education in the field of material technologies

and design, by specialization in the sphere of the new materials, multifunctional,

aesthetically and ergonomically high quality clothing, leather, wood, textile and metal

design goods and designing new collections. Objective is to provide a chance to

achieve higher professional qualification “technologist/designer” according to the

chosen field of specialization: leather design, textile design, fashion design, wood

design, metal design and also to prepare for further studies in master’s program

7.1.1.2. TasksThe tasks of the Study program are to be realized by providing wide interdisciplinary

education, which is necessary in order the undergraduate would be able to work as a

group member, leader, leader of the company or to practice as an independent

designer. During the course of the studies a student must acquire: :

1) Knowledge and skills, that are necessary for designing goods and collections; 2)

skills and a ‘know how’ for a creative work with the chosen material; 3) knowledge

and skills to choose and design a craft and industrial technologies fitting to the

chosen material; 4) awareness of international influences and upcoming, perspective

tendencies; 5) skills to do design oriented market researches; 6) skills to evaluate

one’s and other’s work designs critically; 7) skills to use administrative and

organizational abilities in the professional field and in the analysis of business work;

8) skills to solve the problems related to the process of introducing new products in

market; 9) skills in starting and designing small and medium businesses; 10)

foundational knowledge and skills, necessary for further studies in the master’s

program; 11) writing, oral and graphic communication skills.

7.1.2. Objectives and tasks for the professional master’s program

7.1.2.1. Objectives:

To provide higher professional master’s education in the field of material

technologies and design, that provides necessary knowledge and skills enabling

designers to work as an artist and a mediator in the industry, who combines both

material and new product researches and the choice of adequate production

technologies, taking in account market and cost researches, and product

presentations; besides it enables research and tutorial work.

7.1.2.2. Tasks and perspective results:

By taking in account, that Latvia is still in the zone of comparatively cheap labor cost

and by finding specialists of a suitable qualification global, multi national companies

entrust more and more early stages of product production procedures to local

product designers. That, however, creates a set of other necessities: 1) need of high

quality methodological seminaries; 2) need of qualified, professionally skillful

specialists and lecturers; 3) need of qualified researchers; 4) methodological and

academical publications in various fields, that border with the prolonged and complex

process of creating an esthetical and high value products and also use of new base,

auxiliary and decorative material technologies; 5) need for leaders who teach,

coordinate other workers too.

In order to provide successful competition of undergraduates in the labor market,

study program must provide: 1) acquiring properties of materials and their research

methods; 2) skills to use them independently, to interpret and apply concluding

results in practical ways; 3) creative abilities; 4) abilities to combine material research

and basic knowledge about technologies, putting an emphasis on market demanded,

technological, easy to use, aesthetically valuable, ergonomical, ecological and

otherwise competitive products and the design of collections; 5) skills to sum and

provide eligible product prices; 6) abilities to present ideas in every part of the

production of the product in a progressive manner; constant development of

presentation techniques; 7) basic skills in pedagogy, necessary for carrier in the field

of professional pedagogy.

7.2. Organization of the study program

7.2.1. Organization of the professional bachelour’s study program

Undergraduate study program has a perspective to acquire a set of basic,

fundamental art knowledge by means of lectures, practical tasks and literature

studies, according to Republic of Latvia undergraduate standard in art sciences. That

includes color composition, lights and darks, style, lines, form, ornaments, structure,

principles of texture, information technologies, economy and other subjects related to

the chosen sphere, as well as humanitarian and social subjects that are included in

general education.

7.2.2. Organization of professional master’s study program Nowadays, global development is changing the conventional views regarding

production as the main link in the product and service field and putting forward the

capacity of product to compete in the international market. In situation of this kind, a

designer becomes an important person in processes of economy and market

competition, and his role has never before been so great. In order to secure a

successive capacity to compete in the marketplace, study program besides

educational subjects in properties of materials and methods of their research, are

included study subjects that are aimed to designing aesthetically highly valuable

products and product collections for reasonable prices, as well as continuos

development of presentations techniques.

Study subjects that are included in the multidisciplinar master’s program material

design and technologies, combine basic knowledge about material researches

technologies, putting emphasis on technological, easy to use market demanded,

aesthetically valuable, ergonomical, ecological and otherwise competitive product

creation and their presentation by means of progressive methods, besides that

pedagogical study subjects are also included.

7.3. Practical realization of the study program

7.3.1. Practical realization of undergraduate study program

The study program provides:

Prepares for a creative modeling and design processes of fibre material

designs, functions and production;

Acquiring necessary knowledge and skills for production;

Developing and encouraging creative potential of students by studying related

ancient and contemporary production technologies and services of related

products;

Encouraging students to develop and use their creative, analytical, intuitive

skills in solving problems, both being in individual position or during

teamwork;

Acquiring education largely enough to perform as a teamworker, individual

designer –producer, as well as a leader of a company;

combining colors, structures and textures, which gives undergraduates a

chance to develop extra skills in order to broaden their capacities in the field

and in the labor market too;

Provides knowledge and offers to acquire skills, that provide an opportunity

for undergraduates to perform product design and exploitation researches;

Abilities to choose and model materials, to choose suitable technologies for

realization of an original design in a industrial manner;

Provides knowledge and offers to acquire skills, which enable international

influences on product design, choice of materials and technological

perspectives;

Provides knowledge and offers to acquire skills to critically evaluate one’s

own work and the works of others as well;

Provides knowledge and offers to acquire administrative and organizational

skills in a professional practice;

Provides knowledge, which enables to develop abilities to perform synthesis

of various problem solutions for introduction of new products into the market;

Provides knowledge and offers to acquire skills for effective presentation of

one’s ideas by means of written, oral, electronic and other means and spaces

for communication of information;

Provides knowledge, which enables to broaden communication chances in

European languages.

7.3.2. Practical realization of Master’s study program

The study program provides:

Material researches and design methodology, acquiring legal and

administrative aspects of design, skills to use this knowledge in

solving problems in ones professional field;

A chance to acquire principles and limitations of industrial collection

design, at the same time giving room for individual approach, capacity

to balance intellectual stamina, research abilities and problem

solutions;

An opportunity to research and evaluate a necessity and potential

perspective for new, designed products and services in the market;

A chance to acquire effective communication methods in the context

of the latest technological environments, by means of special, modern

computer programms;

A chance to work and study in discussion groups by modeling

situations, to look for and find suitable solutions, to perform a critical

analysis of those, as well as to receive and to apply professional

consultations;

A chance to continue the development of one’s creative potential, to

create a recognition as a designer’s, to create ideas and work

‘portfolio’;

To deepen one’s skills in the chosen field of work.

7.4. Evaluation criteria of education, the order and the form of testing

Knowledge is evaluated according to 10 grade system (Decision of Senate

Council, TUR, 29.01.01) in a form of exams and the process of studies or

according to 2 grade system in a form of colloquy. In the most of subjects,

evaluation is combined – grade is formed as a mean value grade, that

consists of study performance during the semester, evaluation of theoretical

knowledge in exams, aesthetical value in creative work –designed collections,

originality of design and constructions, as well as evaluation of quality of

presentations performed. The percentage of grade added to sum value (final

grade) in all cases is decided by teaching lecturers in the their very subjects

and students are accordingly informed of it.

Exams are to be accomplished in a written form, according to 26.01.98. and

30.03.98 approved protocol “Concerning taking exams in RTU”. Examination

questions are prepared and given to students by subject teaching lecturers,

prior to that, coordinated with leading educational personnel.

7.4.1. Characteristics of bachelor thesis:

A professional undergraduate must prove, that he has acquired knowledge about

properties of materials, is able to do researches on quality and suitability of materials,

has acquired skills to prepare materials for remodeling, has learned everything that is

necessary to open and to run a one’s own company, to model both little volume and

industrial size collections, to work in design studies and to open own design studies,

workshops, to work as design consultant, to work in advertisement industry etc. The

thesis should prove the whole spectrum of such knowledge, skills, creative potential,

skills to do market researches and to present one’s product, by showing the

perspective of lessening and saving amounts of material employed, work and other

resources to be employed otherwise. The researches on tendencies and perceptions

of fashion in one’s field of specialization, a search for new trends and ideas have a

remarkable importance in this work.

Most of the study works, especially qualification works, actually are not possible to be

accomplished without research work. It begins with inquiry about demand and

supply, prices, perspective of promotion of the product or service, fashion trends and

perceptions and attitudes of clients. It encompasses search for constructive

solutions, research on materials and their properties, all of which is crucial for

successive generation of one’s ideas and works. Researches are to be continued in

order to combine esthetical, functional, ergonomical, constructive and technological

properties altogether unto a well sold product and to create a successive program of

product promotion. Many students already have jobs and carriers as

designers/consultants, project managers, owners of enterprises and workshops.

The themes of study works are chosen by students themselves, in coordination with

lecturers of the very subject, in accordance with the course objectives, tasks and

their own interests. The task of lecturers is to provide, so that during the very study

course time, methodical books and literature would be suitable and helpful for

successive solution of the tasks and problems, as well as to provide consultations

and advises, if they are necessary. In the process of evaluation of thesis following

things are taken into account: the choice of the topical problem, the creativity of

solution, correct and creative use of the chosen material, the precision of acquired

results, esthetical, functional, ergonomical and economical aspect of the

performance, the choice and quality of materials to be used, the quality of

constructions and technological quality.

In the course of studies each student has to show his works/collections in permanent

exhibitions of available design studios, in shows and various exhibitions; it is

advisable to take part in competitions of young designers in Latvia (e.g. Every year

10 –12 students take part in new designers’ competition “Habitus” with their

collections) as well as abroad.

The creative works and collections of students are regularly included in RTU (Riga

Technical University) exhibitions in exhibition hall BT 1 as well as in the RTU final

exhibition with their semester accomplishments.

7.4.2. Characteristics in the process of evaluation of masters’ thesis:

Masters’ thesis is a form of an accomplishment, which allows to test, whether a

student has wholly acquired and is able to practically use the knowledge taught and

learned during the course of masters’ program. It tests whether one is able to apply

the knowledge in planning and accomplishing scientific marketing researches,

researches on material and product properties and their practical usage, as well as

researches that border and has a relation in art, science, technology and history,

aiming to improve material researches, materials, designs, properties of materials

and production technologies in the very field chosen. It tests whether a student is

able to present his ideas and accomplishments in a compact, clear, interesting,

academic manner.

7.5. Studying

Professional undergraduate study program enrolls students having 1st. level

professional higher education or 3rd level professional qualification, as well as high

school undergraduates. All candidates participate entrance exams in drawing and

mathematics or have the centralized math test when finishing the high school.

Professional masters’ study program enrolls students who hold professional

undergraduate education or equal professional 2nd level higher education.

7.5.1. The amount of the students in the programs

7.5.1.1. In the first, the second and the third year of the professional

undergraduate study program there are 63 students studying.

7.5.1.2. In the professional masters’ study program there are 30 students

studying. Since the year of study 2002/2003 there has begun an enrolment of

students for the professional masters’ study program.

7.5.2. The amount of enrolled students

7.5.2.1. At the period of the year of study 2003/2004, September 1, there are 14

students in the first year of professional undergraduate study program

7.5.2.2. At the period of the year of study 2003/2004, September 1, there are 12

students in the first year of professional masters’ study program.

7.5.3. The amount of bachelors

In the four year professional study program ‘craft technologies and designs, which is equated

with the professional undergraduate study program, the qualification of designer/technologist

is already provided for 148 undergraduates (the year of study 1999/2000 –31 students,

2001/2002 –33 students, 2002/2003 –41 students, 2003/2004 -43).

7.6. Academic personnel employed in the study program

The study program ‘material design and technology‘ is formed in the institute of

Textile material technologies and design (TTD), under the supervision of the

professor group of Design and textile good technologies. In the realization of this

study program there is involved academic personnel from the institute of TTD and the

academic personnel of professor group as well, besides that there is involved

academic personnel from the faculties of Architecture, Material sciences and

practical chemistry.

In the masters’ study program design and textile good technologies, the professor's

group has a cooperation with Latvian Art Academy (contract between higher

education institutions, a copy of it is attached in the appendix X) Prof. R. Eglīte

(fashion design, production of industrial collections), as well as with other highly

regarded specialists in their field of work such as Prof. V.Zarins (philosophy of

creativity), graphic artist and multimedia specialist M. Ozolins, photo artist and art

photo pedagogue Z.Bilzonis and an engineer of project company ‘Solution’ :

Dr.sc.eng. I. Ziemele.

7.6.1. The amount of the academical personnel, their academical degrees and academical positions

The course of studies in the study program material design and technology” is

provided by: one Dr.hab.sc.eng., professor; two Dr.sc.eng., assoc.professors; four

Dr.sc.eng. assistant professors, lecturers; one art doctorate., a lecturer; one Dr.

paed., a lecturer; one master of arts, a lecturer in the art sciences; two MA.paed,

lecturers; one master of arts, a practical assistant in physics; one undergraduate in

art sciences; four assistants, three artists, lecturers; two technologists designers,

lecturers; four engineers/technologists with a regarded work experience, lecturers.

7.6.2. Qualification of academical personnel and its appropriateness for the objectives and tasks of the structural unit

Kukle Silvija, Dr.hab.sc.eng., RTU professor, the leader of the professor group of

design and textile good technologies, additional studies in USA, Great Britain,

Germany. Scientifical projects related to the research of geometry of Latvian

descriptive writings, systematization of information and classification for Latvian

practical textile data base; creation of textual and graphical descriptions of textile;

she is an author of many international publications (16 international publications in

the last 8 years).

Kazāks Vilnis, Dr.sc.eng., assoc.professors, his academical work is directed to

employment of progressive materials and technologies in woodworking and

production of furniture, as well as documenting ancient craft work skills. The work is

directed in researching perspectives of using details of raw wood in contemporary

building and furniture production, projecting furniture sets for outdoors and indoor

interiors; he also is an author of many publications.

Rita Eglīte, Dr.art., professor of Latvian Art Academy, a lecturer in RTU, artistic

Krieviņa Agrita, an assistant, leather goods technologist –a designer, an artist –

crafts master, has a specialization in the field of leather plastics.

Zommere Gunta, an assistant, has a specialization in the field of creating applied art

compositions.

Krūmiņa Aija – a textile artist, a lecturer, crafts master in the field of weaving, has a

specialization in composition of textile goods.

Prīberga Dagmāra – a technologist/designer, crafts master in needle working (the

best needle work crafts master in Latvia, the year 2000), a lecturer.

Resnis Arnis – a technologist/designer, has a specialization in the field of the

graphic visualization of goods, planning indoor interiors.

The rise of qualification of the academical personnel is enhanced by cooperation and

the change of work experience with such colleges as Berlin School of Technics and

Economics, Roitlingen University of Applied Arts, Germany, Kaunas Technological

university, Latvian Art Academy (LAA) (guest lecturers and students from LAA are

acquiring automatic construction of clothing in our computer class), De Montfort

University, Great Britain, Zagreb university, Croatia, Lodz Technical university; the

qualification is enhanced by taking part in international academical conferences with

topical papers, as well as taking part in councils at doctorate dissertations in Kaunas

Technological university as members of the council and the reviewers.

The academical biographies (CV) of the academical personnel, reports and self

evaluations of publications are attached in the appendix.

7.6.3. The policy of selection, resumption, training and development of the academical personnel.

The basic principles in resumption of teaching personnel: the work in the professor

group, in the field of special courses, is offered to undergraduates of study program

“Craft technologies and design”, who are open minded, with a distinctively creative

approach to one’s profession, one’s who have appropriate qualification of master of

crafts, issued by Latvian Craft camera. Right now there are four permanent workers

with a qualification of technologist/designer in the “professor group Design and textile

good technologies”, they are craft masters with regarded work experience, who,

according to competition held in year 2002, are elected to be assistants, five of them

are now studying in the masters program. In order to provide perspective of further

studies it is planned to open a doctorate study program “Material design and

technology”.

7.6.4. A description of the necessary material resources

Lectures, laboratory and practical tasks both in full and part time studies are

organized in accordance with the study program and its objectives. Laboratory and

practical tasks for the students of masters program is accomplished according to

appointed work tasks, which, usually, are problem oriented; in several cases there

are some planned evening lessons, e.g., in the study courses ‘’interiors of public and

private environment”, “small architecture forms and design”. Few times during the

semester, in a special agreement with the students of the masters program, there are

lectures during the daytime, too, especially if it is necessary to work in company, e.g.,

in the study course “Planning of the industrial collections”. All the tasks are done in

specially equipped rooms: in the drawing cabinet of architecture faculty, in the

laboratory of textile materials at TTD I (Ganību Dambis 19), in the computer class (90

m2, Az16), in the design studio (146 m2, Az.str. 18), in the sewing laboratory (144 m2,

Az14), in the craft master workshop of the leather haberdashery and applied art

goods (40 m2, Az.14), in the laboratories of the faculty of the material science and

practical chemistry (Az.14), in the metal working workshops (Ezermalas str., in the

professors group of machine sciences), in the RTU craft master workshops in Meža

str. 1/8 (weaving - 70 m2).

Certain lessons are held in production companies (Solution, Snickers Production

Latvia, Burda Moden Riga, Anastasija, Rimako, Cecīlija, Mantess, Latvijas Finieris,

AB virtuves and in other Latvian wood working enterprises) as well as in design

studios and restoration workshops.

In the computer class, there are 20 working places for students on IBM personal

computers (capacity not less than Pentium) with advanced upgrades necessary for

computer graphics, a matrix printer and inkjet printers HP 560 hp, DeskJet 940, 2

scanners, a digital camera and portable lights presentation, for accomplishment of

tasks and creation of portfolio of collections as well as a plotter HP Design JET 450C.

For development of ideas, for processing researches and for the needs of

presentations, appropriate computer programs are employed (Microsoft OFFICE,

CAD Corel graphics 11 version, Adobe PhotoShop 7. vers., AutoCAD 13 vers.,

ArchiCAD, bCAD, CAD Grafis 8, CAD/CAM LECTRA (available 5 working places)

and specialized designer’s set of programs - Kopperman (available 5 working

places), data base ACCESS, presentation program Power Point, besides Internet

and email service is also available and there is an offer to acquire skills and

technologies for making Internet home pages.

Larger specializations- clothing design and technology (future in the text CD&T) and

wood design and craft technologies (further in the text WD&CT). For the needs of

CD&T there is available tailors master workshop. In the master workshop there are

available 3 and 4 thread industrial overlocks, universal, industrial sewing machines

TMZ 1022, flat seems, sewing machines for the straight button hole sewing, sewing

machines for the sewing of figurative button holes, 15 regular sewing machines and

anthropometrical measuring device. There is also a half automatic PFAF sewing

machine, industrial clothing dummies, for the main typical bodies of children, women

and men, and three tailor’s dummies. Due to close partnership with the dealers of

industrial and regular sewing machines from the company BROTHER, students are

well acquainted with the newest BROTHER devices and even buy sewing machines

for themselves.

Students of the WD&CT do their tasks in woodworking workshops in Bukultu Craft

Center according to the contract with Latvian Craft Camera, (see appendix IX). There

is a plan in the year 2003/2004, to place a joiner’s shop in the building of Az.str.18,

which is given to administration of professor group of the design and textile good

technologies, and it is planned to make a master craft workshop for assembly of

furniture and exposition of connecting joints and surfaces. Many students, parallel to

their studies, work in enterprises, where there are joiner’s shops available for them.

It is planned to make a ‘cooperation hall’, in which students could get acquainted with

the products of enterprises (especially regional enterprises) and their wrok problems,

offering their solutions.

Study program TTD I has a cooperation with RTU faculties of Architecture, Material

Sciences and Applied Chemistry. There is also a cooperation with Latvian Crafts

Chamber (see cooperation treaty, appendix IX) and with Latvian Art Academy

(cooperation treaty, appendix X).

For the optimum realization of the study program: 1) have to make a design studio,

which would be upgraded with 3 –4 powerful computer graphic stations, a plotter,

inkjet color printer, a projector, and in a near future a printer for printing on the fabric;

2) is planned to have the workshop to be located in one place (Ķīpsala), which would

secure a better usage of common resources, a circulation of necessary information

and a possibility to create common interdisciplinary collections (furniture/leather,

leather/fabric, clothing/jewelry, clothing/needlework); 3) it is also planned to make a

permanent exposition of student works –an offer with a stage, where persons

interested, especially the leaders of enterprises, could get to students’ ideas,

characteristics in products, to perform discussion groups, to find cooperation partners

and to order things which arise an interest; 4) it is planned to make an exposition

where enterprises from various regions of Latvia would present their newest

products, thus gaining twofold results –students would have a chance to see the

newest trends and little, peripheral enterprises would have an environment to gain a

larger recognition of their products; 5) in this complex there should be made a

workshop for assembling various kinds of materials, a workshop upgraded with all

the necessary instruments and all the devices for the final processing of furniture and

other kind of wood goods, as well as an exposition of separate knots, joints, surfaces,

and other interesting details (e.g. Japanese toys, Japanese wooden joints and details

etc.)

Theoretical classes are held in the rooms of the masters program or in other suitable

rooms in Ķīpsala, and in computer room too. In the course of the studies there is

group work, group discussions, group presentations and group evaluations for

grades, practiced.

The masters’ thesis, in the most of the cases, is related to the problem situations

which the student faces in his work place. For the end of finding solution of problem

and various tests required in solving it, and in the course of researches undertaken,

there are available almost all of the laboratories of the institute of Textile material

technologies and designs, as well as other RTU resources.

7.7. An evaluation of the costs of the program 7.7.1. The costs of the undergraduate study program in a course of the year

Base cots * coefficient + social expenditure = 455*2.9 + 161 = 1481 Ls,

where 2.9 – is optimum coefficient for engineer sciences.

The cost of the studies for full time studies in RTU, in the faculty of material sciences

and practical chemistry, for the year of studies 2002/2003 is 700 Ls per year.

7.7.2. The costs of the masters study program in a course of the yearBase costs * coefficient + social expenditure = 455 * 1.7 * 1.5 + 161 = 1321 Ls,

The costs can be lowered by rational administration of resources, by cooperation with

master workshops and with Latvian Craft Camera and by cooperation with the

enterprises which are related in the field of work and are interested in cooperation.

The cost of the study for full time studies in masters program is 950 Ls per year, part

time studies –430 Ls per year. Those applicants who work in RTU and successfully

accomplish their tasks are freed from the payment for studies unto the free of charge,

government paid study positions, given to the institute of textile material technologies

and design.

7.8. The appropriateness of the study program to the classification of education and professions

7.8.1. In accordance with Education classificatory of Latvian Republic, the

professions, resembles small group professions (3 –75, 3 –76), that are marked with

7.9. Methodical work

Most of the study courses provide lecture summaries in the form suitable for

photocopying or are saved into the diskette, therefore the methodical work of

lecturers is related to the preparation of the lecture summaries and computer

presentations of the content of the current course.

7.9.1. Provision of the undergraduate study program

In the year of studies 2002./2003, the lecturers of the professor group are

working on following methodical works::

Prof. S.Kukle has added lecture summaries and has prepared individual and

study work tasks for the students of the 1 –4 year of study in the subject of

‘strategy of craft and design’ and in the course ‘’work with the clients”;

and temples, art and crafts in Egypt, Babylon –the center of cosmopolitan and

crafts.

goods in various periods of history, concerning styles and analysis of style,

concerning “the history of design”, “design analysis and expertise”;

assoc.professor V. Kazāks has prepared perspective topics for master

thesis;

ancient jewelry, composition, materials, technologies”;

Assistant A. Krieviņa has prepared a presentation “Mythological, historical

aspects of Sinai in contemporary world”;

7.10. Foreign affairs

7.10.1. Cooperation with potential employers

Some of the special courses and subjects for the students of the study program

“Wood design and craft technologies” take place in wood processing workshops in

Bukulti Craft Center (according to treaty with Latvian Craft Camera); it is possible to

accomplish the study tasks using the required materials. Some lessons take place

out of the regular study places –in such enterprises as A/S Bolderāja, Latvijas

Finieris, Malteks, AB virtuves, Mantess and in other enterprises suitable for the field

of the study program.

Students of the study program “Textile and clothing design and technologies”

sometimes have their lessons in such enterprises as: Solution, Snickers Production

Latvia, Burda Moden Riga, Anastasija, Rimako, Cecīlija. These enterprises are also

planned to be the practical practice places for the students of the full time studies.

It is envisaged to make a cooperative project by opening a furniture shop in Āzenes

str. 18, together with an enterprise A/S Bolderāja. Students would have an

opportunity to get acquainted with the newest products and problem situations of the

very enterprise and offer their perspective solutions.

There is a regular cooperation with an enterprise BT 1, which performs organization

of expositions; students take part with their work collections. The undergraduate of

the study year 2002 Reinis Kazāks has become a project manager of the very

exposition complex, and now continues his studies in the master program.

The perspectives of cooperation are intensively growing, for many of our

undergraduates –technologists/designers are both working in the very enterprises

mentioned above, and in design studios, restoration workshops and parallel to that

continue their studies in the master study program.

7.10.2. Cooperation with similar study programs in both Latvia and abroad

The enhancement of qualification and the academic work of the academic personnel

of the professor group is directed to acquiring new computer programs and automatic

modeling systems (clothing/knitwear/fabric CAD system TexDesign; organized by a

2002, Tallinn, for 3 people; CAD systems Corel Graphics 11. version – 3 workers

acquiring the recent changes in self –education manner; bCAD –the enlargement of

the usage –for one worker). It includes 2 seminaries in business and enterprises in

the year 2001 and 2 seminaries in the year 2002, organized by Latvian Craft

Chamber; a seminary concerning international standards and certification problems

in the field of furniture production and wood processing enterprises, organized by

Italian Furniture Association in the year 2001, for 2 workers. A cooperation with

German Craft Chamber (in Hamburg and in Frankfurt) gives a chance to get to know

German craft enterprises, to get acquainted with new, modern technologies.

The rise of qualification is enhanced by cooperation and the exchange of work

experience with other educational institutions in other countries –Berlin School of

Technique and Economics (the exchange of students and guest lecturers), Roitlingen

university of Applied Arts in Germany (the exchange of the students, 2 guest

lecturers, 1 member of the examination council in the year 2002) Kaunas

Technological university (taking part in scientific –technical conferences with reports,

and taking part in the council of doctorate examination), Latvian Art Academy (guest

lecturers from LAA, however the students from LAA are studying automatic

construction of clothing in the computer class of TTD I), De Montfort university,

consultation concerning the changes in the study program and their realization),

7.10.6.1. Practical engineering, undergraduate studies

In the year of studies 2001./2002, for two semesters, Laila Šteinberga studied

in Reutlingen University of Applied Sciences and worked out her diploma collection.

Diāna Rozenblate, Silvija Lukste, the students of the 3rd year of studies, worked in

small German sewing enterprises.

Two 2nd year students from the study program crafts technology and design

took part in the project Fashion and Identity, Germany, Halle, School for Fashion and

Design, October, the year of 2002. The result of that was a partaking of their new

made collection and show in Dyseldorf Fashion Mass and Intertextil Balticum –2002,

February, Riga.

In the year of studies 2002./2003. – 2003./2004, a 3rd year student Alise

Šīrone spend in Berlin School of Techniques and Economics two study semesters.

In the year of studies 2002/2003 a 3rd year student Vadims Markevičs went for

studies to the Dresden Technical University, for a period of one study semester.

Many students from various study courses in their time free of studies are

traveling to work in various European countries, in order to acquire the native

language and culture; they work in joiner’s shops, flowery shops, art workshops etc.

7.10.6.2. Master study program

The enrolment for the practical master study program Material technology and

design, has only begun in the year of studies 2002/2003. Therefore there are not yet

any foreign students in the study program. Ulme Andra, a 1st year student of the

master study program, is preparing the necessary documents for the studies in

Australia for a period of a study semester

greatest, biggest problem is the lack of good study books. It is very important,

therefore, for all the lecturers in the course of their teaching subjects to be giving out

lecture summaries and other materials necessary for photo copying.

9. SummaryThe professional study program material technologies and design, generally has the

same study program as crafts technologies and design with exception several slight

differences. It provides not only 5th level higher professional education, but also both

professional bachelor and master program degrees.

The professional study program material technologies and design is supplemented

with new lecture courses, according to demands of the labor market, there are new

study subjects modeled and existing ones are supplemented, methodical and other

study materials prepared. In the process of preparing the study program the RTU

Senate decisions and the legislation of the Latvian Republic were taken into account.

The graduates of the study program craft technologies and design,148 in total, work

in government institutions, small, medium and large scale production/projection/trade

enterprises, in educational institutions, design studios, in salons as designers and

planners, consultants, experts, medium and high level managers, marketing and

advertising managers. Some of the graduates are working in Europe and in

Scandinavia. There is a high demand for specialists in the branch of woodwork

technology and design, in the market. There are 30 students in the masters study

program, opened in the year of studies 2002/2003.

There are experienced academic personnel of high qualification, both of full and part

time work, involved in the realization of the study program material technologies and

design, including professors, associated professors, lecturers, assistant professors

from TTDI, from faculties of Material Sciences and Applied Chemistry and from the

faculty of Architecture, there are also guest lecturers from Latvian Art Academy,

Latvian Agriculture University and others.

The staff workers and students perform scientific and practical researches, take part

in seminars and conferences and have a cooperation with foreign universities and

crafts chambers.

The self –evaluation work group considers the study program material design and

technology to be a perspective and demanded one and is in accordance with the

Workshop of creativity (1-0-1; I) (0-0-2; D)This course focuses on eksperimental design and is a continuation of the foundition design sequence for textile, fashion, leatherworks, wood works or metal works majors. Students are provided the oportunity to think creatively, to develop alternate approaches in problem solving and to select optimum solutions on a cost/ aeshetic/materials bases. Through materials investigation, this course promotes the use of creative answers to the basic design problems. Individual or group presentations.

Ancient Cultures (2-0-0; I)A slide and lecture course to acquaint with the history of pre-industrial design and its philosophy. The evolution of pre-historic and historic designs of different cultures is covered. Aspects of design and graphic communication will be reviewed.

Dissertation (20 KP) Critical review of baceground and context of disertation subject undertaken. Aims and objectivers of investigation.Discussion of application of research methodology and design tools. Description of theorethical and practical tools used. Description of outcome of project, succesfull and unsuccesfull elements. Reflection on the process of design and manufacture. Recommendation for further work.
