Expanded Metal Mesh
An Introduction to Expanded Metal
Catalogue GuideWhether you are familiar with our products or whether it is all new to you, this catalogue is designed so that you can find the mesh that you need quickly and easily. You will see by the contents page that our meshes are organised firstly by material type. Then on each page the meshes are arranged from small to large. Meshes are then separated into raised then flattened.
The scans on the opposite page correspond to the tables so that you can choose a pattern specification and size to suit your needs and see the stock availability and standard sizes.
You can view the fold out Technical Guide at all times when using the catalogue, if necessary. This will clarify the technical references used in the expanded metal industry as well as showing you what you need to consider when ordering mesh. The diagrams in the Technical Guide show how our meshes are measured, by individual diamonds and in sheets.
The column entitled “Stock Size” indicates the products that we hold in stock and gives the size available. These are usually available for next day delivery. The column entitled “Standard Manufactured Sizes” indicates the sizes in which that particular mesh is usually made. Lead times for standard manufactured products can be obtained from the sales desk. We also have the ability to produce mesh to specific sizes to meet your requirements.
Expanded metal is a unique material with a fascinating production process, that can turn any ductile solid metal into thou-sands of varieties of mesh. The process of stretching and slitting gives the well known, traditional diamond shaped pattern, as well as a large range of decorative shaped meshes. This can vary in diamond size, from minute gauze to massive walkway. Meshes can be as thin as foil or as weighty as heavy duty walkway.
What is Expanded Metal? The process for expanding metal was first patented in Hartlepool, UK in the 1880’s and despite the amount of time which has elapsed since then, the process remains true to the original idea. Most types of metal, including precious and specially produced metals, can be expanded. Other materials, such as some plastics or any other ductile material can also be expanded. The proc-ess is simple but incredibly effective...
Sheets or coils of metal are fed into the expanding machine. A little metal can create a lot of mesh.
Each machine is fitted with a
unique “knife”, dedicated to a
particular pattern.
The machines are then programmed or manually controlled to ensure the metal is expanded to exact specification.
Using the unique shearing and stretching process means very little waste is created. The metal is sheared and then stretched in a single process creating the
apertures and therefore expanding the metal. The mesh is then either cut into sheets or wound onto coils ready for shipping or further processing.

Expanded Metal Features and Benefits
Expanded metal mesh has a diverse range of properties, which makes it so versatile and appealing for many uses and applications throughout industry. Here are some of the key strengths of expanded metal mesh:
Feature Benefit
The mesh is formed from a single piece of metal
The process is not wasteful of material
Higher strength-to-weight ratio than sheet metal
Anti-slip surface
Excludes and retains simultaneously
Premium reinforcement properties
Practical and effective screening
Highly efficient conductor
Super corrosionresistance
Which means that there is nothing to work loose, no fretting strands or strained joins or welds. This makes expanded mesh ideal for forming and beneficial to further processing such as pressing and shearing. The strength of mesh makes it valuable for use in multiple components.
The expanding process involves slitting and stretching the metal to create holes rather than punching them out. This provides cost savings, especially compared to other metal processing methods. For example, when perforating metals, all of the holes you see are wasted and must be paid for by you. Expanding metals is a traditional method, which complies with modern green engineering standards. (see page 23)
Test results are available from extensive research carried out with The University of Teesside to validate the strength to weight ratios of Expanded metal meshes. Hard to believe but tested and true. By expanding metal from its solid sheet form additional strength is added. This makes mesh ideal for catwalks, ramps, walkways and platforms. The uncut knuckles of expanded mesh withstand stress better than welds or joints.
The knuckles formed by expanding mesh give sound grip underfoot, particularly beneficial when used in stairtreads, ramps and walkways. We have also developed a range of specific anti-slip walkway meshes.
Mesh acts as a barrier for security and storage. For example, our meshes are excellent for grain storage as they allow the circulation of air but keep vermin out. Our Securilath range prevents illegal access through walls and partitions whilst strengthening the area it covers. For more information on our Securilath range request a brochure.
Expanded metal mesh can be combined with other materials to give products added strength. For example, glass, plastics and other composites can be either incorporated into, or attached to, meshes for increased strength and security purposes or aesthetics.
Taking a sample of mesh and looking through it at various angles best illustrates the visual properties of expanded metal meshes. Wide strand meshes are used in architectural solar screens on the exterior of buildings and throughout interiors for decorative grilles.
Electricity, magnetic flux and heat can all flow through expanded metal mesh, as there is a continuous connection throughout each sheet. There are no breaks or welds because the mesh has been formed from a single piece of metal.
When suitably coated, expanded metal mesh performs better than woven and welded mesh due to jointless continuity of mesh. Our mesh is ideal for use with industrial acids as in electroplating baskets and in seawater for fish cages and lobster pots.

Copper MeshesCopper has high electrical conductivity, high thermal and is corrosion resistant and malleable, making it easily worked and joined. Copper can also be patinated to give an ageing appearance. We are able to post patinate the mesh after our expanding process, or expand pre-patinated material into a chosen mesh pattern.
Brass MeshesBrass has good mechanical strength, is resistant to corrosion and is easily worked and joined. Copper & Brass

Speciality and Precious MetalsIn practice most ductile metals may be expanded to form a mesh, and the unique technology of cutting and stretching has been applied to many exotic metals including platinum, gold and silver. The technology of manufacture is essentially “loss-less” so that extreme value materials can be processed without incurring cutting loss or generating unacceptable levels of waste, punch-outs or off-cuts.
Incoloy DS MeshesThis Nickel Alloy is composed of 37% Nickel and 18% Chrome. It is used for its ability to withstand hightemperatures (up to 1100oC) and for its resistance to corrosion. These properties make it ideal for use in heat treatment, carburising and chemical plants. Other nickel alloys can be offered as non-standard items.

Security Products
Super Security fencing has been tested by Government testing bodies.A series of evaluations were carried out to test the strength, anti climb properties and hosting properties of electronic security equipment. The system performed well in all categories and exceeded the requirements of ‘Class 4’ status, the highest category for security fencing by set by Government agencies.
Primary fencing is a substantially more secure, yet cost effective alternative to lightweight fencing. Designed around posts with no potentially dangerous protruding bolts, Primary is safe for both children and the general public. Posts and fencing are low maintenance and can be polyester powder coated to make Primary an eye-catching feature of thesurroundings.
Alleygator™ is a specially designed gate incorporating Expanded Metal Mesh infill, supplied for vehicle or pedestrian access. The key system ensures that no two alleyways can be accessed with the same key, and the unique design means they cannot be easily copied.Alleygates provide:•Less – Burglary/Theft, Litter/Fly Tipping, Hassle/Misuse/Fear•More – Private Space, Control, Road Safety
Easily installed, gates are supplied with fence starter angles, to allow the fencing to run in any direction from the gate, and lockable sliding latches or hasps and drop bolts. Tamper proof hinge covers are also included to maximise security.
Our product range includes systems which have gained the police preferred ‘Secured by Design’ accreditation and Home Office Approval. ‘Secured by Design’ identifies technical standards and evaluations, which test the competence of security products and their resistance to criminal attack.
Our products are designed for a range of applications from perimeter demarcation to the highest level of security. The range caters for a number of sectors across the UK, including tailor made systems for Rail, Utilities, Schools, Retail and Local Authority to Super Security systems for Airports, Prisons and MoD.

Architectural Meshes
Architectural Mesh RangeInspired by some of the finest new architecture appearing across the world, these meshes sit at the forefront of modern design. Soft curves and unusual apertures combine to present mesh that can blend seamlessly into its surroundings or make a bold architectural statement.
MaterialsMost malleable materials can be expanded with mild steel, aluminium and stainless steel being the most common. However, more fashionable, precious metals such as brass, copper, gold and even platinum or titanium can be turned into expanded metal mesh. Each of these materials has its own ‘special’ characteristics; aluminium gives lightweight longevity, steel brings strength and copper ages beautifully, maturing to a stunning verdigris..

Edging SectionsYou canuse Expanded Metal edging sections to transform standard sheets of mesh into a variety of functional products, adding value and enhancing appearance and appeal. Expanded Metal edging sections seal the edge of the mesh sheet giving a barrier for fixing, protecting or handling the finished sheets. Frames are frequently used on stairtreads and window guards. If you require advice on which edging section to use for your specific ap-plication, please contact our sales team.
BenefitsEdging sections are an economical way to make a mesh sheet into a functional panel. Fabrication is easy to perform and not time consuming, giving cost savings via our economically developed method.
FeaturesWe offer a choice of Edging Section in Mild Steel, which have been specifically developed for framing Expanded Metal Meshes. Edging Sections can be used on both Flattened and conventional Raised Mesh. We offer standard stock lengths, as well as a made to order capability.
