GENERAL DESCRIPTION - I/A Series TEMPERATURE TRANSMITTER

MULTIPLE MEASUREMENTS

The transmitter is available for single measurements, including seven different RTDs (2-, 3-, or 4-wire), eleven different thermocouples, millivolts, milliamps, and ohms. Additional sensor flexibility is provided with the custom curve and the ability to have the output linear with temperature or humidity. The transmitter is also available with dual sensor measurements, as long as the sensors are the same type. This provides the capability for averaging, difference, or redundant measurements.

DUAL INDEPENDENT MEASUREMENTS

The multiple measurement feature combined with the FOUNDATION fieldbus digital output allows one transmitter to be used for two individual process measurements, which can reduce the number of transmitters required by 50%.

4 to 20 mA-to-FOUNDATION FIELDBUS CONVERTER

The single or dual input transmitter accepts a mA signal. This allows the conversion of 4 to 20 mA signals to the fieldbus segment, which can be of tremendous benefit by integrating legacy devices not available with FOUNDATION fieldbus protocol.

VERSATILE HIGH PERFORMANCE TRANSMITTER

A wide range of packaging and sensor types makes this transmitter suitable for virtually all temperature measurement applications. The microprocessor-based electronics eliminates ambient temperature effects and results in high accuracy, repeatability and linearization of the sensor signal.

EFFICIENT AND DURABLE

Industrial-grade integrated circuits and sealed electronics combine to make this microprocessor-based transmitter an efficient and durable device.

AUTOMATIC SELF-CALIBRATION

This transmitter has an advanced automatic self-calibration routine that greatly extends the time between recalibrations. Every three seconds, the transmitter checks the zero and full scale output against highly accurate and stable internal voltage signals that are referenced back to the factory calibration stored in non-volatile EEPROM memory. Any necessary adjustments are made automatically without interrupting the output signal.

CONFIGURATION STORAGE

All configurable parameters are stored in non-volatile EEPROM memory and retained when power is removed from the transmitter. The transmitter is ready for immediate use when repowered.

MULTIPLE PACKAGING CONFIGURATIONS

The transmitter (Figure 1) is suitable for use in a variety of applications. Transmitters with integrally mounted sensor have an environmentally protected enclosure and are mounted directly to the process. Surface- and pipe-mounted configurations allow the transmitter to be mounted remotely from the process. The transmitter is also available with DIN-mounting hardware, and as a basic transmitter package (must be mounted in EMI-Shielded enclosures provided by user). Built-in protection from vibration and radio frequency interference (RFI) are also provided.

Figure 1. Multiple Packaging Configurations

INTELLIGENT NOISE FILTERING

Innovative filtering automatically eliminates noise while maintaining fast response to rapid input changes. It provides a highly accurate and smooth output signal without the need for excessive damping. A digital filtering algorithm (signal conditioner) is active over a band of input fluctuations. Any sensor noise is eliminated while the conditioned signal reacts immediately to any large input change. This allows the transmitter to be used in a wide variety of electrically noisy installations.

When there is a rapid signal change, the smoothing band is immediately exceeded, and the output of the signal conditioner uses this change as the basis for the output signal. As long as the input fluctuates or moves at a rate that is outside the band, the output instantly tracks the input signal. Once the input settles at a new value, the filtering algorithm is automatically reactivated, eliminating noise and producing an accurate and stable output.

CUSTODY TRANSFER/SECURITY JUMPER

The configurator pushbuttons, and any remote configurator, can be disabled via the mechanical write protection jumper.

LCD INDICATOR/CONFIGURATOR OPTION

The versatile indicator (Figure 2) plugs into the transmitter and provides the following features:

• Highly Accurate – Microprocessor driven indicators provide excellent accuracy.

• Local Configuration – The indicator has two pushbuttons to reconfigure some of the transmitter database without using a separate configurator. Configuration menu messages of the indicator are configurable in English, French, German, Italian, or Spanish.

• Security – The pushbuttons for local configuration can be disabled by any remote configurator for security.

• Non-Interactive – Transmitter output is unaffected whether inserting/removing indicator, reading parameters, or by indicator failure.

• Highly Visible Measurement Display – Top line of indicator has six 8 mm (0.31 in) high digits. Negative values are displayed with a minus sign.

• Configurable Display – Top line of the indicator can display output from Input 1, Input 2, or Dual Values.

• Innovative Features – The indicator’s 2nd line is an eleven-segment bargraph that displays readings in % of calibrated range. Temperatures outside the calibrated range are indicated by a left-pointing (underrange) or right-pointing (overrange) arrow. The 3rd line displays a user-configurable tag number on a 6 mm (0.25 in) high, seven-character, alphanumeric display. This line also automatically displays “FAILSAFE” if a transmitter or sensor failure has occurred.

• Transmitter Operational Status Check – Either displays “MODULE WORKING PROPERLY” message or displays any activated internal error messages.

• Portable – A single indicator can be used for multiple transmitters. Simply plug it in, make desired readings and/or adjustments to the transmitter, unplug the indicator, and install it in the next transmitter.

SENSOR MATCHING

Sensor accuracy can be the largest error in a temperature measurement. Foxboro offers standard and high accuracy RTDs for improved measurement accuracy. In addition, the sensor’s Callendar-Van Dusen coefficients can be entered into the RTT25, which greatly improves the overall measurement accuracy.

Figure 2. LCD Indicator/Configurator Option

TRUE 4-WIRE DUAL RTD MEASUREMENT

The RTT25 has eight sensor screws to allow for the improved measurement accuracy and ambient temperature correction of 4-wire RTD measurements. Some manufacturers use less than eight sensor screws and the installation instructions mention that if you want dual 4-wire RTD measurement, you should “leave the unneeded leads disconnected and insulated with electrical tape.” This approach will convert the 4-wire RTDs into 3-wire RTDs.

REDUNDANT OPERATION

When configured for dual redundant measurement, if sensor #1 fails, the measurement is immediately switched to sensor #2 without interrupting the output signal. The transmitter diagnostics will also send a message to any remote configurator that sensor #1 has failed. In addition, the optional LCD Indicator will flash “FAILSAFE” to alert the user to change the sensor.

REAL WORLD PERFORMANCE

The transmitter nonvolatile memory stores many coefficients to eliminate errors. Every transmitter is factory tested from -40 to +85°C (-40 to +185°F) ambient temperature, and the error coefficients, along with the curves for all sensor types, are stored in the nonvolatile memory. Therefore, the accuracy specification is applicable merely by choosing the sensor type and calibrated range, without the need for any calibration equipment. In addition, the internal cold junction sensor not only compensates for a thermocouple measurement, but its temperature is used to compensate any ambient temperature error, no matter what sensor type is selected.

INSTALLATION ASSISTANT

Let Foxboro be your Installation Assistant. When you order a transmitter with an integral sensor and thermowell, everything is assembled, tagged, wired, calibrated, and configured to your specifications. Just open the shipping container and install. This feature is ordered by specifying Package Configuration Code L or M, along with Option -D2. See Figure 3.

SENSOR AND OUTPUT TERMINAL

Wiring some temperature transmitters can be difficult due to the number of connections and space limitations inside the housing. Foxboro has streamlined the wiring by using spring loaded Phoenix connectors. Just strip some of the insulation off the wires and simply push the wires into the connector. Also, the transmitter is labeled with the most popular sensor connections to eliminate the need to read the instruction manual.

RUGGED AND RELIABLE SENSORS

Foxboro supplied integral sensors are high quality and rugged construction. The RTDs are 4-wire high-vibration resistant wire-wound construction designed for maximum accuracy and longevity.

Figure 3. RTT25 with Integral Sensor with Thermowell

ULTIMATE SPARE TRANSMITTER

The RTT25 is available with single or with dual measurement capabilities with slight added cost. Keeping a dual measurement transmitter as a spare allows it to be the replacement for any existing temperature transmitter.

FIELDBUS TECHNOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

The FOUNDATION fieldbus is an all digital, serial, two-way communication system which interconnects field devices, such as transmitters, actuators, and controllers. It is a Local Area Network (LAN) with built-in capability to distribute control application across the network. This technology consists of the Physical Layer, the Communication Stack, and the User Application Blocks.

Physical Layer Standards

The Fieldbus Foundation uses IEC 1158-2 and ISA S50.02 Physical Layer Standards as references to define, as a minimum, the signaling and electrical properties of a fieldbus device’s Physical Layer interface. The properties of these transmitters are:

• Polarity Independent• Open Circuit Level of 35 V dc maximum• Intrinsically Safe Parameters per table below.

Communication Stack

The Communication Stack comprises a Fieldbus Access Sublayer (FAS), a Data Link Layer (DLL), and a Fieldbus Message Specification (FMS).

The Fieldbus Access Sublayer (FAS) provides:• Client/Server VCR (Virtual Communication

Relationship) – This is used for queued, unscheduled, user-initiated, one-to-one communication between the devices on the fieldbus; typically user-initiated requests, such as set-point changes, alarm acknowledgments, and device uploads/downloads.

• Report Distribution VCR – Typically allows fieldbus devices to send alarm notifications to operator console.

• Publisher/Subscriber VCR – Allows fieldbus device to publish data, and send function block I/O data, such as transmitter process variable and primary output data to operator console.

Communication Stack (Cont.)

The Data Link Layer (DLL) provides:• Scheduled Communication – As authorized by

the Link Active Scheduler (LAS)

• Unscheduled Communication – This allows all devices on the fieldbus to send “unscheduled” messages between the transmission of scheduled messages.

The Fieldbus Message Specification (FMS)

FMS services allow user applications to send messages to each other across the fieldbus. The FMS describes communication services, message formats, and the protocol required for the user application.

User Application Blocks

These are software blocks which represent different types of user application functions. The types of blocks used are Resource Blocks, Function Blocks, and Transducer Blocks (see Figure 4).

User Application Blocks (Cont.)

Resource Block (One per Device)

This block identifies the transmitter and includes data such as the device name, serial number, device description (DD), manufacturer ID, device type, device revision, DD revision, and diagnostics. There are over 40 available parameters in the resource block

Analog Input (AI) Function Block

Analog Input (AI) function blocks contain the configurable parameters needed to define the measurement for use with other function blocks. Available parameters in the AI block include revision level, tag description, alarms, process variables, transducer scale values, and strategy.

Transducer Block

The transducer block contains the actual measurement(s). Other parameters include the calibrated range, EGUs, sensor range limits, sensor configuration, linearization, reranging, temperature compensation, and diagnostics.
