High Performance Wire Rope Quick Reference

Super 8 - 8-strand overhead crane wire rope has a plastic coated core to increase operating life, and provide for permanent core lubrication. This is a strand compacted rope for increased fatigue life and is swage compacted for increased strength.

Multi - developed for maximum performance on over-head cranes. This rope features a plastic coated core for extended fatigue life performance and permanent core lubrication. Multi is spin resistant to reduce block twisting on overhead cranes.

Power 9 - all steel high strength type for overhead cranes. This rope is compacted to enhance abrasion characteristic and to reduce sheave- and drum wear. Up to 40% strength increase over standard 6-strand constructions.

Ultra - ultra high strength type mainly used as high fatigue resistant rope for engineered cable assemblies. Up to 55% stronger than standard 6-strand constructions. Sensitive to introduced rotation - call before you select this rope for overhead crane applications.

Compac 18 - more flexible than 19x7 due to a larger num-ber of individual wires. Compacted to provide for better drum spooling and less core abrasion. Recommended for Grove, Terex, Century, Link-Belt, and National cranes. NOT to be used with a swivel.

Compac 35 - recommended to be used on tower and European type mobile cranes. Available in left and right hand lay as well as in regular and lang’s lay constructions. Recommended to be used in single line applications. ALLOWED to be used with a swivel.

Hoist - fatigue resistant non-rotating rope. Strand compac-tion increases strength and sheave contact area. Plastic coated core increases fatigue life, prevents premature inner wire breaks and provides for permanent core lubrication. ALLOWED to be used with a swivel.

Construct-6 - high strength 6-strand rope for applica-tions which require a crush resistant rope to be used on multiple layer winding systems. Because construc-tional stretch is near zero it can be used where a ‘pre-stretched’ rope would be required.

* Classifications are the same in 7 and 8 strand wire ropes.

755 Ton Concrete Platform

Steam Generator

We are one of the largest manufacturers

of Slingmax® slings in the southeast United States!

Synthetic vs. Wire Rope SlingsGuess which sling requires less effort to rig, has less chance of causing injury, is easiest to transport and store, and costs less to use?

Synthetic Sling - 44 lbs. Wire Rope - 400 lbs.

Twin-Path® Extra Slings with Covermax® and K-Spec® Core Yarn (TPXC) - This is our best synthetic sling. They have been made in capacities up to 600 metric tons (vertical hitch). All Twin-Path® slings can be made with the Check-Fast® inspection system. The safety and inspection features found only in Twin-Path® products were created to overcome shortfalls riggers found in single path round slings.

Twin-Path® Adjustable Bridle Sling (TPXA or TPA) - This tool is an aid to finding the center of gravity. When the load is lifted the ring moves over the COG to balance and level the object.

Fiber Optic Inspection (FO) - All Twin-Path® slings have the Fiber Optic inspection. The condition of the internal core yarn can be inspected by checking the continuity of the fiber optic cable. The fiber optic cable will conduct light using natural, overhead or flashlight sources.

Shackle Pin Pads - The Shackle Pin Pad is the ideal solution for the problem of sharp edges on the pin-side of a shackle. This pad is easy to connect and easy to remove.

CornerMax® Pad - The CornerMax® cut protection device prevents an edge on the load from touching the sling. In fact the edge doesn’t even touch the CornerMax® protector! This protector will handle the most extreme circumstances lifting steel and concrete. CornerMax® Pads are proven, tested—sling protection from Slingmax® for straight 90° edges.

CornerMax® Sleeve - The CornerMax® sleeve is the latest in rigging protection from Slingmax® Rigging Solutions. This sleeve will protect a synthetic sling from cutting on edges that are curved or irregular.

Check-Fast® Inspection System - The Check-Fast® System is designed to improve job-site safety. The Check-Fast® Tag and External Warning Indicator (EWI) on a round sling product provides for a pass/fail inspection of the internal load bearing core yarn. This safety system is available on Twin-Path® slings, High Performance K-Spec® Fiber round slings, and polyester round slings.SparkEater® Synthetic Slings (SE) - When you have a hot environment up to 300°F, use a Sparkeater® to lift the load without marring the surface of the lifted piece. This is the only high performance, high temperature synthetic sling commercially available.

Twin-Path® Two Leg Bridles (TL) - Simply the lightest and strongest synthetic bridles in the world today. These are perfect to replace existing chain and wire rope bridles. This makes the Twin-Path® Two Leg Bridle extremely versatile on the job.

Twin-Path® Eye & Eye Synthetic Sling (EE) - Usually an eye and eye sling is made from a round sling with a sleeve over it to form the eyes at each end. But our TPXCEE is a single-bodied sling with integrated eyes. It can be manufactured using either K-Spec® core yarn or polyester.

Check-Fast® Inspection System Also known as the 3 Fast® SystemThe Check-Fast® System is designed to improve job-site safety. The 3 Fast® Tag and External Warning Indicator (EWI) on a round sling product provides for a pass/fail inspection of the internal load bearing core yarn. Damage to the core yarn from ultraviolet (UV) light degradation, fiber on fiber abrasion, fatigue, and severe overload can be detected. If the sling is mistakenly overloaded beyond rated capacity, the EWI is designed to disappear before the sling fails. The sling inspector now has a GO/NO-GO inspection device rather than relying on a subjective hand-over-hand inspection to make an educated guess if the load bearing core yarns are in good condition. This safety system is available for High Performance K-Spec® Fiber Round Slings or polyester round slings fabricated by authorized Slingmax® Dealers.

Fiber Optic InspectionFor Twin-Path® SlingsTwin-Path® slings have the Fiber Optic inspection system. The condition of the internal core yarn can be inspected just by checking the continuity of the fiber optic cable. If crushing or cutting, heat or chemical damage, has occurred then the damage to the fiber optic cable will destroy its ability to transmit light from one end to the other giving the inspector a reason to remove the sling from service and send it in for repair evaluation. The fiber optic cable will conduct light using natural, overhead or flashlight sources. The inspector simply covers and removes his finger from one end and watches the other end for blinking which indicates that the sling is OK to use for another lift.

Twin-Path® Adjustable Bridle

The Twin-Path® Adjustable Bridle Sling is a multi-purpose rigging tool and it’s important that it is used properly. The adjustment ring has a double leg for the heavy side of the load and a single leg on the lighter side.

See the Adjustable Bridle Product Manual for more information.

If the lifting points are an equal distance from the center of gravity then the Twin-Path® Adjustable can be hooked-up with the double or single leg on either lifting point.

If the lifting points are an equal distance on either side of the center of gravity but one is higher, then the double leg should be attached to the higher lifting point.

The Twin-Path® Adjustable Bridle should be used in applications where the double leg horizontal angle is greater than 45°. Always connect above the center of gravity. If connections are made below the center of gravity, then the load may turn when lifted.

If one of the lifting points is closer to the center of gravity, then attach the double leg to this lifting point. It will have the highest weight concentration. If the Twin-Path® Adjustable is attached so that the single leg is nearest the center of gravity, the lift cannot be made.

CAPACITIES ARE IN POUNDS (LBS.). METRIC SLINGS AVAILABLE* Dimensions can vary according to the hardware or bearing points the slings are used with.

Minimum is “tapered” width; Maximum is the flat tubing width.

Twin-Path® Synthetic Slings Twin-Path® Extra Sling with CoverMax® and K-Spec® Core YarnTPXC - This is the world’s first truly ergonomic sling with CoverMax® covers for superior abrasion resistance. These are made in sizes up to 600 tons vertical rated capacity. Larger capacity slings are available on special order. These slings have overload indicators, inner red cover, and are used worldwide in place of wire rope slings for heavy lifts. They are approximately 10% of the weight of a steel sling. These products are repairable. The Twin-Path® patented design provides the rigger with two connections between the hook and the load for redundant back-up protection. These slings have less than 1% stretch at rated capacity. If ergonomics, productivity and safety are important, then these slings are the only choice. This is the lightest and strongest sling on the market today with K-Spec® – the longest lasting load bearing core yarn, backed by independent testing.NOTE: Capacities shown include both paths and are for one complete sling. Sling ratings based on fittings of equal or greater capacity. Conforms to ANSI/ASME B30.9 chapter 6, NAVFAC P-307 section 14.7.4.3, and the Cordage Institute Roundsling Standard. This chart is based on a 5:1 Design Factor (DF); but any other DF can be fabricated. Higher capacity slings are available.

Synthetic SlingsCornerMax® PadsEngineered Cut ProtectionCornerMax® pads create a “tunnel” of cut protection–a no-touch zone. Therefore, the edge does not come in contact with the pad or sling thus protecting the sling. Note that the sides of the load must completely support the pads in order to create and maintain the “tunnel”.

Warning: Damaged or misused protection can result in damage or sling failure. Inspect before each use. Inspect for cuts, tears or damage that may prevent protection of the sling. Ensure protection is the correct size and type to protect the sling. Prevent pads and sling from slipping or sliding across load edge. DEATH or INJURY can occur from improper use, maintenance and/or inspection. MAXIMUM LOADING: Do NOT exceed 25,000 lbs. per inch of sling width.

Synthetic Armor™ PadsAbrasion ProtectionSynthetic Armor™ pads protect slings from abrasion damage which can be caused by contact with rough surfaces such as concrete beams and structures. They are also used to protect finished or painted loads from marring. These pads can be made to fit any length or width sling. They can also be made in long lengths which the customer can cut into suitable sizes on the job. Double or triple thickness provides resistance for the more severe conditions. There is no maximum width and a variety of materials are used to protect slings and to protect loads depending on the degree of abrasion expected in the application.

CornerMax® SleevesEngineered Cut ProtectionThe CornerMax® sleeve is the latest in rigging protection from Slingmax® Rigging Solutions. The CornerMax® sleeve is the ideal solution to protect synthetic slings from cutting when it is not practical to use a CornerMax® pad, whether due to curvature of the load edge or repetitive uses such as unloading steel coils. Independent field and laboratory testing has shown the CornerMax® sleeve to be extremely cut resistant. The CornerMax® sleeve is made with high tech fiber and is proven tough. In some applications the CornerMax® sleeve may be attached to the sling to prevent slippage. The true benefits of this revolutionary material far outweigh the costs and now provide for the use of synthetic slings in applications previously dominated by heavy chain, mesh and wire rope slings.

Warning: Damaged or misused protection can result in damage or sling failure. Inspect before each use. Inspect for cuts, tears or damage that may prevent protection of the sling. Ensure protection is the correct size and type to protect the sling. Prevent sleeve and sling from slipping or sliding across load edge. DEATH or INJURY can occur from improper use, maintenance and/or inspection. MAXIMUM LOADING: Do NOT exceed 25,000 lbs. per inch of sling width.

Twin-Path® Coil Sling• 10 times lighter than conventional steel coil gripper slings.• The Twin-Path® Coil Sling is so light that it is easy to grab and pull the sling.• Will not damage the load.• Repairable as manufacturer can remove a damaged CornerMax® sleeve and sew a

new one to the sling.

Warning: Can cause damage or failure of sling if misused or damaged. Inspect before each use. Inspect for cuts, tears or damage that may prevent protection of the sling. Be sure wear protection is the correct size and type to protect the sling. DEATH or INJURY can occur from improper use or maintenance.

Shackle Pin PadsThe pin area of a shackle can cause synthetic slings to cut or tear. Placing synthetic slings on the pin should be avoided. Any shackle can have a sharp edge where the threaded pin goes through the shackle ear. If the sling is exposed to this area, it can cut and fail. If you must rig on the pin, protect your sling with a Shackle Pin pad.

• Sized for the model of shackle.• Protects sling along entire pin including ear seams.• Three connection points secure pad to shackle.• Install and uninstall in seconds.

Chain SlingsCrosby® ELIMINATOR®Standard Industry Chain Sling TerminologyThe Crosby ELIMINATOR® uses standard industry terminology to make changeover to the system easier. Adjustable chain slings utilizing the Crosby ELIMINATOR® fittings retain standard sling abbreviations. Simply adding the letter “E” to the standard sling type means the sling has been assembled with the Crosby Eliminator®. No more confusion or uncertainty over “Style A”, “Style B”, “Style 1” or “Style 2” adjustable slings. These style designations aren’t needed with the Crosby ELIMINATOR® (see below).

The slings shown here are standard assemblies that can be made from “Proof Tested” Crosby components and alloy chain supplied by your authorized Crosby distributor. Assemblies must include chain sling identification tag.

Crosby® Clamp-Co Beam ClampsCrosby Clamp-Co Beam Clamps provide an efficient method for handling wide flange beam sections and plate girders. When lifting, these beam clamps grip the beam at three points, and when properly balanced and safely guided, the beam can be handled even if the clamp is slightly off center lengthwise.

• Capacities: 5 Tons to 35 Tons.• Eliminates the need for slings, chokers, and spreader bars.• When applied to load, the tongs automatically open and slide

under the flange of the beam.• Center plate and gripping tongs work together - the heavier

the beam, the greater the clamping pressure.• Model “NS” clamps have a recessed base to accept studs welded to

the beam surface.• Individually Proof Tested to 2 times the Working Load Limit with

certification.• Finish - Red Paint• All sizes are RFID equipped.

NOTE: Control the beam at all times. Beams should be gripped as near the center as possible. Snubbing lines at each end must be used to control excessive twisting or swinging, and to guide the beam to its proper place. Each lifting situation may have a specific demand which should be addressed before lifting.

Crosby® Solid Wire Rope ThimblesCast Ductile Iron. Fits pin for open wire rope socket, boom pendant clevis and wedge socket.

A-412

Crosby® Wire Rope Wedge SocketsThe S-421T Wire Rope Wedge Socket meets the performance requirements of Federal Specification RR-S-550D, Type C, except those provisions required of the contractor. Wedge socket terminations have an efficiency rating of 80% based on the catalog strength of XXIP wire rope. The basket is cast steel and individually magnetic particle inspected. The pin diameter and jaw opening allows wedge and socket to be used in conjunction with closed swage and spelter sockets. It secures the tail or “dead end” of the wire rope to the wedge, thus eliminates loss or “Punch out” of the wedge. It also eliminates the need for an extra piece of rope, and is easily installed. Available with Bolt, Nut, and Cotter Pin.

The TERMINATOR™ wedge eliminates the potential breaking off of the tail due to fatigue. The tail, which is secured by the base of the clip and the wedge, is left undeformed and available for reuse. Incorporates Crosby’s patented QUIC-CHECK® “Go” and “No-Go” feature cast into the wedge. The proper size rope is determined when the following criteria are met: 1) The wire rope should pass thru the “Go” hole in the wedge. 2) The wire rope should NOT pass thru the “No-Go” hole in the wedge.

S-421T

Crosby® S423T SUPER TERMINATOR™Wedge socket terminations have a minimum efficiency rating on most high performance, high strength, compacted strand, rotation resistant wire ropes of 80% based on the catalog breaking strength of the various ropes.** The patent pending design eliminates the difficulty of installing high performance wire rope into a wedge socket termination. Proper application of the Super TERMINATOR™ eliminates the “first load” requirement of conventional wedge socket terminations. S-423TW Wedge Kit can be retrofitted onto existing Crosby S-421T TERMINATOR™ wedge sockets. The basket is cast steel and individually magnetic particle inspected. Pin diameter and jaw opening allows wedge and socket to be used in conjunction with closed swage and spelter sockets. Secures the tail or “dead end” of the wire rope to the wedge, thus eliminates loss or “punch out” of the wedge. Eliminates the need for an extra piece of rope, and is easily installed. The TERMINATOR™ wedge eliminates the potential breaking off of the tail due to fatigue. The tail, which is secured by the base of the clip and the tension device, is left undeformed and available for reuse.

S-423T

** NOTICE: Due to the unique construction of various ropes, Crosby cannot make a broad general statement that all current and future design of ropes, when properly assembled with the Super TERMINATOR™, will achieve a minimum 80% termination efficiency. Contact us to determine efficiency rating for a specific rope.
