Introduction:

The Product Design Specification document documents and tracks the necessary information required to effectively define architecture and system design as specifically as possible, in order to give the development team guidance on architecture of the system to be developed. The Product Design Specification document is created during an early Planning Phase of the project. Its intended audience is the project manager, project team, and development team. Some portions of this document such as the user interface (UI) may on occasion be shared with the client/user, and other stakeholders whose input/approval into the UI is needed. The persons who would be involved in using the product directly and the conditions in which the product would be used must be simulated and thought of as much as possible.

Design Specification Table:

PARAMETER DESCRIPTION REQUIREMENT/SPECIFICATION

1. Physical Characteristics

a) Size limitations. (L×B×H) 3m×2m×2.5m

b) Crane self-weight Limitations.

Must be as less as possible. Stop straining the trailer suspension and use least accelerating and decelerating power when towed. Trailer weight cannot exceed 500Kg.

c) Load carrying space.

1m×1m×1.4m for one ton Bags.

d) Space needed in operation

As less as possible for increased maneuverability and passage and operation in confined spaces.

e) Attachability Preferably fixed.

2. Performance

a) Maximum lifting capacity. 1000 Kg with 20% Safety margin.

a) Minimum lifting time. Not more than 60 Seconds

b) Allowable slope on which crane can perform normally.

5 Degrees in any direction.

c) Rotational motion and range. Must be enough to allow easy trailer parking at a reasonable distance from load.

d) Manual power provided One fit adulte) Electric Power provided 12V, 10Amperes, approx. 120Wf) Extra power Generators allowed only if cost allows.3. Usage and Servicing

a) Personnel needed to operate. Must be operatable by one personb) First service Must run 5 years before first servicec) Ease of repair Most parts must be easily detachable

and user repairable. Repair manual and helping literature should be provided.

d) Load attachment/detachment Bags must be easily and securely attached in the least amount of time.

e) User interface Must encompass user friendly and easy to operate switch/panel. New users must

understand quickly.f) Transport Vibration is a consideration, must be

suitable to transport loaded/unloaded at the towing trailer’s speed.

4. Safety a) In case of an Emergency Must have highly visible and easily

approachable “emergency stop” switch. Must bear clear, bold safe directions of use and plan of actions in case of emergency.

b) Legislation concerning electric equipment safety.

[1]Must comply with BS EN 418, BS EN 953, BS EN 954,BS EN 982, BS EN 983, BS EN 1037, BS EN 1050, BS EN 1088, PD 5304 BS EN ISO 12100, BS EN 60204 BS EN 61069, BS EN 61310, BS EN 61496 safety regulations.

c) Legislation concerning working in confined spaces.

As one of the possible uses of the crane would be working in confined spaces the machinery must not clash with any of the clauses of “[2] The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997”.

d) Safe operating position The user interface must allow the user to operate from a safe distance from the raised load and all moving parts to allow safe escape in case of a structural failure.

e) Accidental usage. Appropriate guards must be designed to prevent accidental turning on or off of the controls. Preferably a remote control should be developed.

f) Transport. Must be stable enough to be transported safely at moderate road speeds and versatile terrain.

g) Ergonomics Must not be harmful to use, with low noise levels and comfortable surfaces.

5. Enviornment a) Dust and rain Must be guarded with seals, etc against

use in frequent rain and duty conditions. No open seals or inner parts should be exposed to open environment.

b) Shock Loading Must be able to confront any shock-loading to a descent level.

c) Working timeMust be able to work for long hours in multiple or single shifts.

d) Working temperature. Must operate properly and safely between and including -20°C to +40°C.

e) Life Must have a life of 5 years, being used 150 days/year.

Page 6: PRODUCT DESIGN SPECIFICATION

6. Marketing and Economics a) Manufacturing processes The manufacturing processes used must

not require any new technology to be developed. Existing and simple processes must be used.

b) Manufacturing batch size Mass production in thousandsc) Pricing Retail price: £2500-3000

Factory transfer price - £1250-1500d) Looks Must be attractive to look at or

concealablee)
