Company ProfileThe General Tyre and Rubber Company of Pakistan Limited (GTR) came into existence in 1963, at Landhi, Karachi on a 25 acre plot and commenced its production in 1964.

The Company was established by General Tire International Corporation (GTIC) of USA, with a total capacity of only 120,000 tyres per annum.

GTIC sold 90% of their shares to the present owners M/s Bibojee Services Ltd. in 1977 and retained 10% of the ownership. In 1985, the Company completed a major expansion, which took the capacity to 600,000 tyres annually.

Continental AG, Germany’s number one tyre manufacturer purchased GTIC in 1987 and thus became 10% owners in GTR . Continental provides Technical Assistance to GTR under a program, which includes training of our people, formulations, recipe, selection of equipment and approved suppliers. GTR under this agreement with Continental is bound to follow all rules and regulations provided by Continental including the given quality standards. The brand name “GENERAL” used by GTR also belongs to Continental AG. Now this brand name is synonymous with quality and experience.

The name ‘GENERAL’ carries the highest top of the mind brand name recall in Pakistan when it comes to tyres. The annual capacity for automotive tyres of the Company is 2.5 million tyres, approximately meeting one third of the country’s demand. GTR is producing tyre sizes and patterns that cover almost 85% of the sizes in demand in Pakistan. GTR is the first & largest automotive tyre manufacturer in the country producing tyres for cars, light commercial vehicles, trucks/buses, tractors & CNG Rickshaw. Recently motorcycle tyre plant has been added.

Being a public listed Company ; the current main sponsors of the Company besides Bibojee Services are Pak Kuwait Investment Company, NIT and of course Continental AG. The remaining shares are held by the general public.

GTR has four market segments to cater to. These are:1) The Original Equipment Manufacturers – Vehicle assemblers 2) The Replacement or the after market3) Government Departments/Institutions 4) The Export Market

GTR sells its tyres in replacement market through more than 150 nationwide authorized dealers/distributors most of whom have been working with GTR for more than three generations setting a milestone on customer loyalty and satisfaction.

It has offices /warehouses in four major cities of Pakistan and intends to add another new office soon. All automotive tyres produced by us are covered with warranty.

Radial ConstructionIn a Radial tyre, ply cord, either steel or fabric, run straight across the tyre from bead to bead. In addition, the radial tyre has a belt of additional plies, usually steel running down the centre of the tyre between the carcass and the tread. This construction allows the radial sidewall to be

much more flexible while the tread is much stiffer than bias ply tyres. This allows the tyre to absorb impacts and limit sideways movement of the tread while cornering.

Bias ConstructionIn the Bias ply tyre, also known as diagonal ply tyre, plies run from bead to bead at an angle (hence the name bias). With layers of plies criss-crossing each other, this construction makes the sidewall relatively stiffer and the tread area softer.
