COOP of Switzerland is justifiably known as one of the most progressive food retailers in the world due to its ambitious sustainability programme which sets out a vision for how the retail group will become carbon-neutral by 2023.

On an annual basis, COOP sets CO2 reduction targets across its full range of operations. These sustainable principles are also followed by Prodega, COOP’s high-end cash and carry business which services the foodservice and hospitality industries through its 27 stores in Switzerland.

Prodega stores are typically 7000–12000 m2 with 5–7m ceilings resulting in high energy and maintenance costs for the lighting scheme. Lighting accounts for up to 70% of the energy bill in a typical Prodega store, which naturally made this a key area for improvement as Prodega moves to carbon-neutral status.

Prodega engaged Nualight to work closely with its retail design and energy team to develop a 100% LED lighting solution for its store in Biel, Switzerland that not only delivered significant energy savings of more than 45%, but also enhanced the retailer’s upmarket credentials and in particular the fresh area of the store.

As a business that services the entire industry up to the most gourmet restaurants and hotels, Prodega’s fresh food area is

spectacular in terms of the extent and variety of the produce. In recent years, Prodega introduced an innovative Coolway design for this fresh area. The Coolway is a chilled part of the store containing all of the fresh fruit and vegetables along with cured meats and chilled and frozen food. The fresh fruit and vegetables retain their freshness for far longer in this environment, but due to the high energy cost of cooling this area, it was particularly important that the right LED solution could be found.

Nualight co-developed a unique award-winning LED lighting solution for Prodega called Zest. Zest is a linear LED accent lighting system with the industry’s highest colour-rendering and double the on-target-illumination. This system, which was suspended in elegant lines around the fresh displays, is also colour-tunable and has very low glare. To reduce visual clutter, pricing signage was taken out of the displays and suspended from the Zest system, resulting in dramatically lit fresh food displays where the fruit and vegetables took centre-stage. Nualight’s Vivace technology (very high CRI and R9 resulting in excellent colour vibrancy) was used in all of

the refrigerated case lighting in the Coolway. When the reduced air conditioning load for the Coolway area was taken into account, Nualight’s lighting concept for Prodega Biel saved a total of 45% energy in lighting and 18% in refrigeration and air-conditioning for the entire store operations.

Fluorescent high-bay lighting was replaced throughout the store by directional LED high-bay lighting that gave a bright and fresh impression to shoppers but also improved the vertical illuminance on the shelf displays.

The wines and beers department of Prodega Biel is another strategically important area of the store. This large department uses rustic timber displays to showcase a vast selection of champagnes, wines and spirits. Powerful LED spots by Nualight were mounted at 4.5m heights to create a warm and sophisticated ambience in this area of the store.

The internal car park and loading areas of the Prodega Biel store were also converted to LED. Nualight’s Lineo solution with its very wide beam-angle was used to create a very even lighting concept which created a brighter and safer experience for customers while eliminating expensive maintenance costs for those areas of the store.
