    PROCESS ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT (PED)

    TOUR TO

    BRUNEI MENTHANOL COMPANY (BMC)

    Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh! Hello, my

name is Nuruladibah Binti Haji Ramli from ND1 PED/PLE

2010/2011. I am one of the 15 students including our Group

Coordinator Miss Dk. Nuramalina Bt Abg Haji Kiprawi and also

tutor Cikgu Hassan who pursued for the tour to Brunei

Menthanol Company BMC at Lumut on 13th

    January

    2011(Thursday).

Frstly, we were started moving to BMC at about 8am throughhighway and arrived half an hour. Then, we were asked to

enter BMCs building using the entrance with our

Access Pass . Each of us was given that pass which shown in the left side. After that, we were introduced by one of the personnel of BMC in the

Conference Room 2 and he explained everything about BMCs profile. His friends

were also explained about the Safety Precautions and Basic Emergency Protocol. Nevertheless,

they brought us to tour the Plant where they produce the methanol for making various products

such as cosmetics, tyres, plastics, health, paint product etc; that needs to be send to other foreigners

    countries i.e. Japan, Korea etc.

Next, I will explain what they produce with methanol in Plant. Methanol is actually is not a gas, it is a

colourless liquid chemical, and the composition is 99% methanol less than 1% water. It is also used

for versatile enabler for manufacture downstream products. For now, Brunei does not have any

downstream area because there is no market available here.

The largest user of methanol is for the production of formaldehyde, which is a basic intermediate

with a wide range of end-use applications. Other large user of methanol is for the production of

Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE), which is blended into automotive fuel as an octane enhancer.

Beside, Plant produced about 2,500 metric tonnes

per day which means 850,000MT per year. It is

estimated that the operational life of Plant is about

20 years from now and the power consumption

used is 6.9MW during normal operation. Also, the

water consumption is 10ML/day supplied from

Water Department Services (WDS). The area

covered by Plant is 1.6 hectares. In Plant, there is

an attractive waterfall which called as Cooling

    System or Tower.

Lastly, we were having for lunch refreshment in

their canteen with lots of foreigners workers like

    Japanese, Chinese and local workers.

IT WAS EXHAUSTING BUT SURE IS FUN!! Taken from BORNEO BULLETIN ON JAN 2011
