    THE PROCESS APPROACH:

    writing activities which move learners

    from the generation of ideas and thecollection of data through to thepublication of a finished text.

    A cyclical process involving prewriting,composing/drafting, revising and editing

    (Tribble 1886)

    Writing is seen as a process in which students are

    given time to think about and discuss their ideas on a

    specific topic, write a draft or framework of what

    they want to say, discuss this again and then to write

    a detailed account.

    (Kilfoil and der Walt, 1997:252)

    Process writing refers to a broad range of

    strategies that include pre-writing activities, such

    as defining audience, using a variety of

    resources, planning the writing, as well as

    drafting and revising. These activities,collectively referred to as process-oriented

    instruction, approach writing as problem-solving.

    Various headings have been given to the different stages in

    the writing process, the most exhaustive of which are:

    Prewriting:selecting a topic and planning what to say

    Writing:putting a draft version on paper

    Revising:making changes to improve the writingEvaluation:assessing the written work

    Quality writinginstruction is anchored in the use of

    the writing process. The teacher's role in thisprocess

    is that of a guide and a facilitator, rather than that of

    instruction provider.

    In using the writing process, your students will be

    able to break writing into manageable chunks andfocus on producing quality material.

    Communication of the message is the purpose and,

    therefore, the developing, but inaccurate attempts at

    handwriting, spelling, and grammar are accepted.

    These skills can be further developed in individual andsmall group writing workshops.

    Learners might view revision as a sign of failure

    Finding a topic and coming up with something to say

    about it. A few of the discovery strategies that canhelp us to get started are free writing, probing, and

    brainstorming.

    Drafting:

    Putting ideas down in some rough form.

    The purpose of a rough draft is to capture

    ideas and supporting details, not composea perfect paragraph or essay on the first

    attempt.

    In this step, we respond to the needs of our

    The four stages overlap, and at times we may

    have to back up and repeat a stage, but thatdoesn't mean we have to focus on all four stages

    at the same time. In fact, trying to do too much at

    one time is likely to create frustration.
