Life can be Fun… as long as you do it with the right people.

Our July BBQ Kudos to Jane Corry and Company

    for our July 12th BBQ

As Vice President, our plucky Jane accepted the

    challenge of organizing this Sesquicentennial

BBQ. With her usual quiet grace, Jane

researched the best resources and then consulted

    with Probus-Guildwood club volunteers.

Together they produced a wonderful social for

all to enjoy. Working with Lisa, Guildwood

church secretary, and John Roblin, our treasurer

and church member, Jane negotiated extended

time for the use of the hall and the use of the

    church’s BBQ.

From Guildwood valu-mart, Alan Burt and Jane

picked up and delivered the fresh meats, buns,

salads, fruit platters and beverages. To set the

mood and help everyone chill, Jan Eaton

brought her portable stereo, familiar summer

tunes and fan. Gerard Baribeau transported the

Rotary BBQ and Alan Burt brought new

propane tanks. Together with Barrie Morgan

the trio prepared our delicious burgers and hot

dogs. Mitze Clarke, Regina Doose, Diane

Gamble and Freda Morgan assembled the hot

barbequed items and ferried them to the buffet

table. Jan Eaton, Diane Gamble, Lee

    Grayhurst and Cheryn Parry prepared

    complementary refreshments while Dorothée

McKinlay and Glenna Hall actually sat down

after they set up the coffee and tea buffet. There

were also tubs of iced soda and bottled water.

Thanks to Glenna Hall and Doreen Lougheed,

we were treated to two fresh cream-iced vanilla

and chocolate slab ‘150 Canada cakes’ from

Costco to accompany fresh platters of fruits.

    Once everyone was comfortably swaged

(relaxed after a good meal), Gerard projected

our Canada 150 quiz consisting of 25 questions

selected by Alan and Jane and graphically

enhanced by Gerard. Roseanne Nihtila proved

to be the ‘whiz kid’ who correctly answered 20

of the questions! Congratulations to Roseanne

on winning the prize: You Might be From

Canada If… by Michael de Adder. Sincere

thanks to all who participated in this venture and

jumped in to help clean up. A special thank you

    to Barry Scheffer

who took candid pictures throughout the

celebration and formal portraits of twelve of our

    new members.

end of which he declared, “Hey, were getting along pretty great

The Guild Alive with Culture Arts Festival,

Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30

This 10th annual event produced by Councillor

Paul Ainslie and the Guild Renaissance Group

was a resounding success. There were 95 artist

    markets, superlative live entertainment, Guild

heritage exhibits, and children’s activities plus

the Old Stone Cottage Beer Garden, Guild

Festival Theatre and the City of Toronto’s

Canada 150 Mobile Museum. Thankfully it was

a warm sunny weekend with the additional

sights and sounds of five ethnic weddings

running concurrently in the open air Guild

    Estates pavilion.

Sincere thanks to all our Probus-Guildwood

volunteers: Alan Burt, Jan Eaton, Glenna Hall,

Diane Gamble, Lee Grayhurst, Sharon Kohalmi,

    Margaret Markwell, Dorothée McKinlay, Barrie

Morgan, Eric Niemela, Ellen Poborsa, Marilyn

Rice, Joyce Russell and Julia Taylor. Everyone

was fantastic in chatting up our visitors,

    distributing our membership brochures and

    collecting over 61 interested contacts.

Joy Hughes of Cedar Ridge graciously loaned

us a canopy for our booth. Jill Watson from the

Guild Renaissance Group helped us locate Joy,

provided a shaded site for our booth and

checked to see if we were ok. Gerard provided

resources for us to display with this unique

marketing adventure and Barry Scheffer took

pictures throughout the event. Several members

popped by, including Anne Marie Johnson,

charter member, who is looking very good since

30 Minutes For 30 Days – Are You Up

for the Challenge? Province Challenges People to Spend 30 Minutes Outdoors Every

    Day

Join Ontario Parks this August for a challenge

that will recharge your connection with nature

while improving health and mental well-being.

Ontario Parks is encouraging people in Ontario

to participate in the 30x30 Challenge, a concept

created by the David Suzuki Foundation, which

challenges people to reconnect with nature by

spending 30 minutes a day outside for 30 days.

You don't have to venture far to spend time in

nature – even time spent in your backyard or

local park can help boost your immune system,

decrease stress, and help alleviate symptoms of

    some mental health issues.

If you're looking for a change of scenery,

Ontario Parks can be a great starting place. The

Ontario Parks Blog and YouTube channel have

many ideas for what you can do for your 30x30

Challenge. Looking for options that everyone

can access and enjoy? Visit the accessible

playground at Murphy's Point or borrow an all-

terrain wheelchair at Killbear to enjoy the trails

or spend some time at the beach.

Ontario Parks is giving you an incentive to meet

your nature commitment. On August 16, all

provincial parks across Ontario will be offering

free day use to help re-energize and complete

the last half of the 30x30 Challenge. By

accepting the 30x30 Challenge, you are

    committing to a healthy lifestyle.

School may be out, but summer is still a great

time for learning and boosting your brain fitness.

Building brain health is important for people of all

ages. According to the Alzheimer Society of

Ontario, keeping an active mind can help reduce

    the risk of dementia.

Here are ideas to help people of all ages keep their

    brains engaged this summer:

Get creative – Whether it’s painting, pottery or

carpentry, making something helps to build

cognitive and motor skills by interpreting

instructions, making decisions and mastering tools

Hold a music night – Learning to play a musical

instrument helps people of all ages build memory

    and spatial awareness

Include theatre, museums and galleries in your

summer plans to engage the creative side of your

    brain

Relax with puzzles, brain-teasers, chess, card

games or a good book to de-stress while keeping

    your brain active

Get outside and play -- Physical activity is

important at every age, but for older adults in

particular, it can reduce risks associated with

dementia. Plus, exercise will help you sleep well,

which also contributes to brain health.

    QUICK FACTS

The Ontario Brain Institute is a provincially

funded, not-for-profit research centre seeking to

maximize the impact of neuroscience and

establish Ontario as a world leader in brain

    research, commercialization and care. The

    institute builds partnerships among researchers,

clinicians, industry, patients and their advocates to

foster discovery and deliver innovative products

and services that improve the lives of people

    living with brain disorders.

    According to the Ontario Neurodegenerative

Disease Research Initiative (ONDRI), dementia is

the most common brain-related cause of decline

    among seniors.

ONDRI is a research program being carried out in

partnership with the Ontario Brain Institute. It

involves more than 50 Ontario researchers and

clinicians, 13 clinical sites, and 600 participants.

Since 2003, Ontario committed more than $2.37

billion to life science research projects to foster

new discoveries, improve lives and support new

    treatments, companies and jobs
