Problem 1

The theater club at school put on a play. For one performance, the club sold 133 tickets and raised $471.

Tickets cost $4 for adults and $3 for students. How many student tickets and how many adult tickets did the club sell?

Step 1 (understand the problem):

Ticket cost = adult $4, student $3

Number of tickets sold: 133 tickets

Money raised=$471

Step 2 (make a plan):

We are going to take a guess, and then test it. If not correct, then we use what we learned to make a better guess.

To find how much money was made on adult tickets, multiply your number by 4.

Adult Tickets

Student Tickets

Total Money

60 133 – 60 = 73 60 (4) + 73 (3) = 240 + 219 = 459If 471 was raised, the adult ticket is too low.

80 133 – 80 = 53 80 (4) + 53 (3) = 320 + 159 = 479Too high

70 133 – 70 = 63 70 (4) + 63 (3) = 280 + 189 = 469Still low but very close

72 133 – 72 = 61 72 (4) + 61 (3) = 288 + 183 = 471YES!!!!! Sold 72 adult & 61 student tickets
