    1 Overview About this guide

This guide is designed for system administrators who: Use theHP ProLiant PRO Management Pack, Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager

2007, Microsoft Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, and the HP InsightManagement Agents to managevirtual machine environmentsbased on HP ProLiant servers.

Are familiar with the configuration and operation of MicrosoftWindows, Microsoft SystemsCenter Operations Manager 2007, Microsoft Systems Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008and the HP Insight Management Agents.

CAUTION: Because of the potential risk of data loss, only individuals who are experiencedwith using this software should implement the procedures described in this guide.

HP assumes that this level of expertise is available to customers using the HP ProLiant PROManagement Pack for Virtual Machine Manager 2008 User Guide. HP recommends reviewingMicrosoft product documentation for assistance in understanding this guide.

The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack is not intended to manage the basic health of theProLiant Server or HP StorageWorks products. To find further information on HP OperationsManager 2007 Management PacksforProLiant server andStorageWorks products, see Additionalreferences (page 25) .

IntroductionHP ProLiant PRO Management Pack utilizes the Performance and Resource Optimization(PRO)feature in Microsoft System CenterVirtual Machine Manager 2008 (VMM) with Microsoft SystemCenter Operations Manager 2007. The PRO feature in VMM enables HP to guide and automatevirtual machine migration triggered by certain hardware events from a server hosting virtualmachines.

FeaturesThe HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack is a single management pack that contains all thefunctional modules. Microsoft refers to this management pack as a PRO Enabled ManagementPack. HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack contains a similar set of modules that Microsoftdesigned for its PRO management pack. Configuration and operations are very similar betweenthe two PRO management packs. The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack for Virtual Machine Manager 2008: Monitors HP ProLiant virtual machine hosts to alert prefailed or warned events as PRO tips Provides a set of predefined monitors and easily enables them as PRO settings from the

VMM console Migrates all virtual machines in the prefailed server host to the available hosts within the

cluster or host group Provides interactive virtual machine migration after confirming the PRO Tip message Provides automatic virtual machine migration as a PRO Tip alerts option Supports HP Insight Management Agents Supports Windows 2008 R2 x64 with Hyper-V Edition Supports Failover Clusters with HP Fibre Channel/iSCSI SAN for critical and warning event Supports non-cluster local storage servers for warning event only

BenefitsThe HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack for Virtual Machine Manager 2008: Easily monitors the health of ProLiant virtual machine hosts with a predefined set of monitors

that is specifically designed for a virtual machine environment Simply uses PRO Tip to evacuate virtual machines from a host reporting a hardware issue

which might cause a virtual machine outage

HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack platform supportYou can install and operate theHP ProLiant PRO Management Packfor Virtual MachineManager2008 with Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 and Virtual Machine Manager2008 release. For more information on the complete list of supported configurations, see the HPServer Integrations with Microsoft System Center Products Support Matrix at https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPSCSUP .

Product architectureThe VMM PRO feature works within four different types of servers with the following roles: Hyper-V managed node where an HW pre-failure or warning condition occurs Hyper-V managed node where virtual machine placement is available within a cluster or

host group Virtual Machine Manager 2008 server managing Hyper-V managed nodes OperationsManager 2007 server communicated with a connector program of Virtual Machine

Manager 2008The following architecture diagram illustrates the data process steps:1. A monitor detects an event from HP Insight Management Agents.2. The monitor generates an HP PRO alert.3. VMM connector transfers the HP PRO alert to VMM and appears as a PRO Tip.4. The monitor executes a diagnostic or recovery module, and then posts each as an NT Event

entry.5. The diagnostic or recovery event rule detects the NT event and runs a diagnostic or recovery

script on the Operations Manager server. The script communicates with the VMM server.a. The Diagnostic script always runs to verify the current condition and update the PRO

Tip message with its status.b. The Recovery script runs when automation is selected or the user selects Implement

to perform an interactive migration.6. The script requests the VMM server to perform the VM Migration. It selects a target host

based on the VMM host rating and cluster availability.a. The script reports the migration progress to the VMM server as PRO Tip status.

    b. The script generates NT Event messages to report the progress and status.

3 Using the HP ProLiant PRO Management PackConfiguration

This section describes key steps to properly work with the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack. Configuring Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) Configuring the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack

Importing the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack on Operations Manager Configuring PRO on Virtual Machine Manager Discovering and monitoring HP ProLiant servers with Hyper-V host

Configuring Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO)See the Microsoft Virtual Machine Manager 2008 Help Guide formore information. In the document, the Configure Performance and Resource Optimization (PRO) section describes the PROconfiguration steps for both Operations Manager 2007 andVirtual Machine Manager 2008. Thesesteps are needed before configuring and operating the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack forVirtual Machine Manager 2008.

Configuring HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack1. Import HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack on Operations Manager.

While normal operations take place on Virtual Machine Manager2008, the HP PRO ProLiantManagement Pack must be imported through the Operations Manager console. Import themanagement pack as described in the installation section. After importing the managementpack, the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack deploys on each managed Hyper-V host andOperations Manager server.

    2. Configure PRO on Virtual Machine Manager. The PRO feature is not activated by default. At the VMM console, locate a Host Group or acluster to enable the PRO monitoring feature.

    3. Discover and monitor HP ProLiant servers with Hyper-V host. After configuring PRO on Virtual Machine Manager, you must be able to see the discoveredresult and health state of each Hyper-V host on the Operations Manager console. To confirmdiscovery and monitors are working properly, see HP PRO Managed Host Class and View.

HP ProLiant PRO ViewThe HP ProLiant PRO folder view contains three views: Active Alerts: The view displays active alert that generate a PRO Tip. These alerts are cleared

after the PRO Tip state changes to closed on the Virtual Machine Manager 2008 console. Managed Hosts: The view displays the HP PRO Managed Host class instances with its state. VMM Managed Hosts view: The view displays Hyper-V PRO Managed Host class instances

with its state. The HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack defines the HP PRO Managed Host class: Class Name: HP PRO Managed Host ID: HewlettPackard.Servers.ProLiant.SNMPPRO.ManagedHost Inherits a public class, ID Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.Pro.2008.Public The class has Manufacturer property with "HP" fixed value.

    Configuration 15

  • 8/6/2019 Pro Management for Hyper V

    16/29

The management pack discovers the class instance if the following are installed on a host system: Windows Server 2008 HP Insight Management Agents Virtual Machine Manager 2008 Agents Hyper-VDiscovered instancescanbe seen at HP ProLiant PRO/Managed Hosts state view in theMonitoringpane of the Operations Manager console. The following figure includes two HP PRO Managed

Host instances. If some properties such as VMM Object ID, VMM Type ID, PRO Recovery Level,PRO Monitoring Level, and VMM Server are empty, wait for the next VMM discovery cycle ofthe VMM server, or initiate the VMM discovery cycle by opening a VMM PowerShell commandprompt and running the following commands:Get-VMMServer

    Set-VMMServer OpsMgrServer

After proper discovery and PRO setting on VMM console, a healthy state appears for all ofmanaged host instances. If a healthy state does not appear, check the PRO setting. The PROsetting might not be enabled properly for the managed host. The state reflection within theOperations Managerconsole might take severalminutes to appear after thechanged PRO setting.

If one of the Hyper-V hosts does not appear in the Managed Hosts state view, verify the MicrosoftVMM Managements Pack hasdiscovered the Hyper-V hosts by viewing the discovered Hyper-V

hosts within the HP ProLiant PRO/VMM Managed Hosts view. If hosts are missing, consult withthe MicrosoftVMM document.HP ProLiant PROManagement Pack requiresproperly configuredVMM and VMM management packs. The HP PRO Managed Host propagates its health state to Computer class instance. You can goto the association view from Computer class with the diagram view.

Operating with PRO Tip dialogThe HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack monitors Hyper-V hosts for hardware related events.A PRO Tip dialog appears when one of the monitors in the HP ProLiant PRO Management Packdetects a hardware event. Initially, the PRO Tip reports the Alert data copied from OperationsManager.

16 Using the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack

    17/29

Initial PRO Tip screen data: Name : Monitor name Description : Original NT event message of hardware event from HP Insight Management

Agents Summary, Cause, and Resolution : The text for each of these fields is sourced from the

Specific Monitor Rule Knowledge Base. After a short period, the diagnostic script reports updated dynamic data into the PRO Tip.

Name : no update Description : no update Summary : Updated by diagnostic script only if the PRO Tip can operate successfully. Cause : no update Resolution : no update View Script : Show Implementation script source. (You cannot edit the script.) More Information : Appears if the PRO Tip can operate successfully or displays an error

message if an error occurs for PRO Tip.

Implement operationYou can take action from the PRO Tip dialog to implement virtual machine migration. Toimplement virtual machine migration, select Implement at the bottom of the PRO Tip dialog. IfAutomatically implement PRO Tip is selected on the PRO Properties, the PRO Tip dialogdisappears after completing the migration process by the HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack. You can check the progress of implementation at the Jobs pane on the VMM console. Theimplementation process migrates all virtual machines from the failed host to the most availablehost by using the VMM host rating data. The implementation PowerShell script recalculates hostrating from the VMM server at every virtual machine migration so it might distribute virtualmachines to multiple hosts. The following criteria are designed into the PowerShell script in the HP ProLiant PROManagement Pack:

Migrate virtual machines inside a failover cluster using inner cluster migration. Migrate virtual machines inside a host group on a LAN using network migration if the host

is not inside a failover cluster and the monitor reports the warning level. Report a failure if the host is not inside a failover cluster and the monitor reports the critical

level. A network migration requires significant system resources and time period to run. Acritical state might require the server to immediately shutdown, disrupting the virtualmachine migration and possibly leaving the servers in an indeterminate state. However, this setting can be adjusted by overriding the monitor on the Operations Manager console.See Override ) for more information.

Migrate one virtual machine at a time and recalculate host rating from the VMM server.

After successfully migrating all running virtual machines from the failed host, the failed host iscleared to This host is available for placement at the Status tab of the Properties view of hoston the VMM console. After repairing the hardware issue, select This host is available forplacement for future migration operation.

Dismiss operationYou can ignore the PRO Tip by dismissing the PRO Tip. To ignore and close the PRO Tip, selectDismiss at the bottom of the PRO Tip dialog.

Work with failed conditionHPPRO Tip might report a failed state as soon as the diagnostic script is updated with the currentconfiguration status of the virtual machine environment. The following types of errors might be reported: There is no running virtual machine on the failed host. There is a virtual machine on the failed host, but it is marked with non-eligible to PRO

migration from the VMM console. There is no available host to migrate the virtual machine from the failed host. PRO Tip alert is in the critical level state, but the host is not in a failover cluster environment. These conditions can be found from the Error section of the PRO Tip dialog. Review the messagein the Error section and take the appropriate action to adjust with the failed condition. For moreinformation, see Dismiss operation .

HP PRO MonitorsHP ProLiant PRO Management Pack provides 27 PRO monitor rules that are activated whentwo conditions are met: HP PRO Managed Host is discovered. PRO is enabled to the host in a cluster group or host group with a specified Critical or

Warning level. Each monitor is defined with a Critical or Warning level alert as shown inthe Monitor Rules section.

    HP PRO Monitors 19

  • 8/6/2019 Pro Management for Hyper V

    20/29

When one of the hardware event conditions is met, the HP PRO Managed Host class instancestate changes to the specified error level such as Critical or Warning. The error level does notnecessarily match the error displayed with the HP ProLiant Server Management Pack forOperations Manager 2007. HP ProLiant PRO Management Pack is designed with a differentworkflow and error levels as compared to the HP ProLiant Server Management Pack. When amonitor generates an alert, you can find the corresponding alert at the top level of the ActiveAlerts view or HP ProLiant PRO/Active Alerts view within the Operations Manager console.

DescriptionStatusIconThe monitor found a hardware failure event on the hostsystem. Hardware repair is required. HP ProLiant PROManagement Pack does not include monitors of severe eventsthat require immediate operator intervention to possiblyshutdown the system. In these conditions, virtual machinemigration is not possible.

    Critical

The monitor found a hardware failure event on the hostsystem. The host system might be able to continue hostingvirtual machines for a while, but HP recommends hardwarerepair.

    Warning

OverrideA monitor can be overridden to change the virtual machine move mode such as QuickMove orLANMove. QuickMove is restricted to cluster-based hosts and is designed for use in critical statesituations. To change the move mode, go to the Diagnostic and Recovery tab in the Propertiesview of the monitor, select Edit, and then override MoveMode to replace string (QuickMove orLANMove) for both Diagnostic task and Recovery task.Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V servers now have the live migration feature. The VM is live migratedif the cluster-based hosts are configured withWindows 2008 R2 Hyper-V. TheVMM automaticallydetermines its live migration capability on the clustered-host and selects live migration, ifapplicable.
