Power Requirements
Each door controller requires its own transformer. The transformer requirements are a 12
Volt AC 40VA transformer Certified CLASS 2 CSA/UL approved. The recommended standby
battery is 12VDC 7AH. If the AC supply is removed, the backup 12 volt gel type of 7
Amp/hour battery (if fully charged) will support normal operation for up to 17 hours. An
internal battery verification will cut the battery power if the battery voltage level falls below
9.5 volt. Note: The control unit will not start on battery alone, AC power is
required.
Each board is designed to supply power to the readers, the REX’s and to charge the backup
battery only. Locks must be powered from a separate power supply. Each board is also
designed with an auto reset Poly fuse. If fuse is tripped, disconnect all power for 30
seconds allowing fuse to cool off, and then reapply the power.
Warning: These poly fuses in no way should be replaced or bypassed or
may result in electrical injury or fire. Each board has power LED indicators to
show both 5VDC and 12VDC presence.
Hartmann Controls – PRO-ACC Hardware Guide 02 13 Page 10
Fire Alarm Connections
NOTE: Access control systems’ should not threaten life safety! Please ensure that
system installation complies with all local and provincial/state fire and building
codes.
A contact from fire alarm panel must be used to break power to door locks in case of fire or
emergency.
Panel Installation Requirements
A qualified and certified technician is required for the installation and wiring of the
Hartmann Controls access control system or the warranty will be void.
The controller cabinet has been designed to be mounted on a wall without any additional
enclosures. The cabinet is large enough to accommodate the battery backup and the
necessary wiring connections for most applications. EMT (electrical metallic tubing) conduit
knockouts are provided in 2.2 cm (7/8") on the cabinet. The cabinet should be mounted
indoors, in a secure location providing normal temperature and humidity levels, leaving 23
cm (8") clear space around all sides and a minimum of 33 cm (13") clear space in front of
the cabinet. The location should be easily accessible for servicing the equipment.
Controllers must be located at a minimum distance of 2 meters (6 feet) from any high
voltage equipment or wiring and from electrical equipment susceptible of generating
electrical interference, at a minimum distance of 1 meter (3 feet) from telephone equipment
or lines, and at a minimum of 8 meters (25 feet) from any transmitting equipment.

Wiring Power for Controllers
A 12 VAC 40VA transformer Certified CLASS 2 CSA/UL approved transformer is required to
power the panel. The connection to the mains supply must be made as per the local
authority’s rules and regulations. The power supply must be permanently connected, fail
safe, with double or reinforced insulation between primary and secondary circuits.
In EU countries it must meet the applicable requirements of the Low Voltage Directive and
protected as per the EN60950 Standard Requirements. In all other countries, it must be of
an approved type acceptable to the local authorities. The transformer must be located
within 30 feet of the panel and can only power one panel. A Ground must be connected to a
cold water pipe or a good earth ground.
There are two poly fuses to protect from
shorts or over voltage from the battery and
AC circuit. You should not bypass or
replace these fuses. Result may be
produce electrical shock or fire.
Don’t forget to remove

Wiring Power for all Controllers (cont’d)
If the AC supply is removed, the backup 12 volt gel type of 7 Amp/hour battery (if fully
charged) will support normal operation for up to 17 hours depending on load.
Battery output is fully fused to protect against short circuit.
Bi-Annual Test for Battery
It is highly recommended to test the controllers by performing the following:
Remove AC power from the controller and connect the battery to the controller for one
hour. This test will ensure that if a power failure occurs, the battery will be able to support
normal operations. This test should be performed twice a year. Once the test has been
performed successfully, reconnect AC power to the controller.
The circuit board includes a Lithium battery (Model Number Panasonic CR2032 3V DC
200mAH or equivalent). This battery is replaceable. There is a danger of explosion if the
battery is incorrectly replaced. If the Lithium battery stops working, it will have no effect in
the operation of the system. The Lithium battery is used to retain the programmed
information in the CPU when both AC & DC power has failed. Once power is restored the
CPU will begin to operate with previous programmed information.
It is strongly recommended if this should happen, you should update the system date and
time from the PC. The lithium battery will retain programmed information in memory up to
5 days. If you need to dispose the Lithium battery, wrap it in non-conductive tape. Check
with your local authorities for battery disposal regulations. Should you short out the lithium
terminals, no damage will arise to the circuit board.
Hartmann Controls – PRO-ACC Hardware Guide 02 13 Page 17
Wiring a Reader
Standard UL listed Wiegand type format readers (26, 32, 34, 36, 40 Bit) are supported by
Hartmann controllers.
The panel provides 5 or 12 volt DC output for the reader’s maximum of 250mA. The drain
wire of the shielded cable must be connected to a good ground at the panel and NOT at the
reader. The maximum reader distance from the panel is 500 feet.
Each reader is connected identically, as shown below.
It is very important to ensure proper grounding configuration of the reader is utilized.
Attach the shield/drain wire of the reader line and connect it directly to the GND pin for
that particular reader port. Do not attach the shield/drain wire ground at the reader
end also as this would create a redundant and ineffective grounding loop. It is not recommended to
attach any ground or shield wires to the Hartmann panel enclosure as the preferred choice is to leave
our system floating. However, in extremely noisy (electrical noise) environments, you can join the
reader shield/drain leads together and run a separate wire to a good earth ground outside of the panel
(ie: cold water pipe). In this case, leave the panel floating.

Wiring Exit Buttons and Door Contacts
Exit buttons or REX motion detectors must be a normally open dry contact. Each exit
device is connected exactly as shown below. Exit devices will unlock the door for the
programmed amount of time, and will reset the held open timer. Door contact must be a
normally closed dry contact. Each Door Contact and Request to Exit device is connected
exactly as shown below.
Why Install Door Contacts and Request to Exit Devices?
Access control systems are designed to “control access” into areas that are a security
concern. In order to do this effectively you must have the ability not only to control when or
if an individual is allowed through a door, but whether or not a person is propping the door
open after the fact, forcing a door open or if it is someone leaving from the inside
legitimately.
In order to do this each door requires a door contact to monitor the status of the door and
request to exit device to determine when someone is leaving the area legally. With
Hartmann Controls you also have the added feature of not only getting an access granted
when an individual uses their card, but also the system tells you whether they went through
the door or not. This also holds true for the use of the request to exit device as well.

Wiring Door Locks, Maglock or Strike
Locks must be powered by a separate external power supply.
The relays on board are a form “C” type relay with a common, normally closed and normally
open contact, giving you the ability to use “Fail Safe” or “Fail Secure” type locks. The LED
indicators beside each relay turn on when that relay is energized.
It is imperative that you research and adhere to any local laws that may
apply to the installation and wiring of any electric type lock being
installed.
In most cases any site that has MagLocks must have an operating fire system. The power
for the locks must be wired through an alarm output on the fire system so it interrupts
power to the locks when a fire alarm is tripped. To ensure proper protection of the circuit
board you must install the diodes provided at the locks.

As with all the relays on board, the auxiliary relays are a form “C” contact rated at 10 amps
at 110 VAC. They can be programmed for various functions including; locking and
unlocking a door with no reader on it by time zone, turning on and off a device by time
zone, arming/disarming a security system, operating a handicap door operator, following an
input etc. When in active state, the relay will be energized and the LED will be on.

The Elevator Controller is a stand-alone unit similar to our door controllers. Each Panel has
a unique address indicated on the PLCC chip in the center of the board. When a valid card is
presented all relays that the card is programmed for at that time will be activated for the
programmed time.
Please adhere to the laws and bylaws in your area regarding the
installation of controllers in elevator rooms and readers in the elevator
cabs.
It is imperative, giving the noisy environment that the readers and controllers must work in,
that you ground the controller and the shield (drain wire) on the cable going to the reader.
Ground the cable on the controller side only to a good earth ground. Most likely an
elevator company or certified elevator technician will have to be hired to do a major portion
of the work, so ensure they understand the traveling cable requirements to the reader and
the need for a pair for each floor. Hartmann Controls does not provide a “Fireman’s
Override” on their panels. This is usually provided by the service company for the elevators.

Using PRO-ACC Dial-Up Software
Please be patient when using the software. After issuing a command such as ‘Connect to
Remote Site’, do not follow up with a disconnect command right after. Allow the system to
go through with each command before issuing the next. All commands are queued and
since dial up is inherently a slower process you could end up with several commands
queued in the system delaying your current requests.
THE FOLLOWING ISSUE MAY ARISE ON RANDOM DIALUP INSTALLATIONS:
Using Dialup the Modem will not stay connected, or disconnects right after handshaking
starts.
RESOLUTION:
We have seen this issue appear at several sites. We have found the remedy is to make sure
the ground is used on the communication bus between panels and converters. Also on the
converter add a 10K resistor between RX- and GND. If you do not have a 10K resistor try
something that is close (i.e. above 2k and below 100k).
Configuration of PIN or PIN/PROX Readers
It is important to ensure that any non-Hartmann PIN or PIN/PROX reader connected to a
Hartmann Controls panel is programmed to accept a 26 to 40-bit Wiegand signal and
produce an 8-bit burst for each key press. The absence of this 8-bit burst will result in
multiple event messages stating invalid or unregistered card for each key press.
Hartmann Controls PIN/PROX readers such as the HC-P640 are preprogrammed to produce
the 8-bit burst. Non-Hartmann PIN readers may require special programming directly from
the manufacturer in order to function properly with the Hartmann panel.

Superior 3X Functionality
Option A: 3-Swipe Lock Down Doors
In this mode of operation, cards that are designated Alarm Arming Cards can lock down
doors overriding their schedule. They can also force doors back to following their schedule.
Typical uses maybe to lock down a pool area in case of chemical spill or a supervisor may
lock down doors if leaving premises early for weekend, etc….
Setup as follows:
You should designate one reader as the master reader for this feature. Multiple zones may
be set up but each zone uses one reader as the override reader.
If you are using reader on line one, tie Aux Relay one to the IE input as shown below.
If you are using reader on line two, tie Aux Relay two to the IE input and so on…
Important: To program the PRO-ACC software for 3X Functionality, please refer
to the Software Guide.
Tie this to the right side of another
panel to cause it to go into
lockdown mode as well (right pin of
IE input is sensing pin).

Option B: 3-Swipe Alarm Interface
In this mode of operation, cards that are designated Alarm Arming Cards can arm the alarm
system via 3 swipes on the designated reader. The feedback from the alarm panel will
cause the panel to lock down all doors included in group if alarm panel was successfully
armed.
Setup as follows:
You should designate one reader as the master reader for this feature. Multiple zones may
be set up but each zone uses one reader as the override reader.
If you are using reader on line one, tie Aux Relay One to the alarm panel as shown below.
Tie the Alarm Armed output from alarm panel to the door panel IE input.
Important: To program the PRO-ACC software for 3X Functionality, please refer
to the Software Guide.

PRO-ACC Upgrade Procedure Please read all information prior to upgrading your system to PRO-ACC.
Important: Door panels with versions prior to 5.0 may require a database
conversion to be performed. If your panel is older than version 5.0, please
contact Hartmann Controls prior to beginning the upgrade process.
Ensure that your Protector II system is operational and that the software is communicating
with the panels. The status line on the bottom of the software screen should indicate that
the system is polling panels. The communication LED on the panels should be flickering
rapidly. If the communication LED is flashing on and off at the rate of once per second, the
panel is not communicating with the software. You must correct this issue prior to
proceeding.
If the software is up and running and communicating with the panels the next step is to
back up the software. After confirming proper operation of the system, close the Hartmann
Controls Protector II software. Copy the file “C:\Program Files\Protector II Server\dbase\
dbmmc.mdb” to a location outside of the Protector II server directory. Also, please move or
copy any previous back up files, floor maps or card picture information and store it in a
location other than the Protector II directory.
Once the backup is completed and the files are stored in a location other than the Protector
II directory, uninstall the existing software using the Windows Control Panel. Once
Windows has completed the uninstall process, delete the “C:\Program Files\Protector II
Server” directory.
Insert the PRO-ACC DVD and follow the prompts to install the PRO-ACC Server software.
Once the software has been installed, copy the original database into the new instance of
software. To do this, copy the original dbmmc.mdb file to the “C:\Program
Files\PRO_ACC_Server\dbase” folder, thereby overwriting the dbmmc.mdb file, which the
new software installation just created.
Once the original database has been restored, you are ready to perform the necessary
hardware upgrades.
Hartmann Controls – PRO-ACC Hardware Guide 02 13 Page 34
PRO-ACC Hardware Upgrade Procedure
Remove power from the panel(s) requiring an upgrade. Also, disconnect any backup
battery connected to the panel to ensure all power sources have been removed. In addition
to disconnecting the power, insert a small piece of paper or other non-conductive material
in between the battery post and the battery housing of the on-board memory backup
battery. This is the battery directly to the right of the main processor chip that looks like a
large watch battery. This will ensure that no power is being supplied to the processor.
Once the power has been disconnected and the memory battery has been disconnected, you
may remove the main processor. It is STRONGLY advised to use a proper IC chip removal
tool. Please note the 8-digit panel address on the chip. Insert the new chip into the IC
socket taking care to orient the chip in the same direction and align the pins correctly.
Please ensure that the chip is fully inserted. Take note of the new panel address. Re-
connect the backup battery. Re-engage the memory battery by removing the paper from
under the battery post. Re-connect the power to the panel.
Once all panels have had the firmware upgrade completed; start the Hartmann Controls
PRO-ACC Server software instance that you previously installed. Go to Setup>>Hardware
Setup>>Door Panel. Using the arrow keys move to the door panel screen for the door
panel you are upgrading. Click the Edit button and type in the new panel address in place
of the old panel address. Click the Save button. Complete this task for each and every
panel you are upgrading. Once this is completed, Exit the door panel setup screen.
Once the panel address(s) have been changed, click the Update button and select Advanced
Download. Click the Send Data to Panel(s) button. A pop up screen will appear indicating
Panel not chosen. Click OK. Then click Exit. This completes the upgrade process and the
panel tables should begin downloading to the panel(s) at this point. If the panels do not
begin communicating with the software, please close and restart the software. If the panels
are still not communicating, please ensure that all steps in this document have been
followed prior to calling tech support.
