Sudbury-Manitoulin District Project 2470The Project is to raise awareness of diabetes and raise funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association. It is recognizedby Grand Lodge and the Masonic Foundation of Ontario under Project # 2470.Diabetes is a chronic, often debilitating and sometimes fatal disease in which the body either cannot produce insulinor cannot properly use the insulin it produces. This leads to high levels of glucose in the blood which can damageorgans, blood vessels and nerves. The body needs insulin to convert glucose into an energy source. Most Canadians are aware of the dangers of chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. But did you knowthat diabetes also poses a very real threat to your health? Our population is aging and obesity rates are rising. Our lifestyles are increasingly sedentary. Almost 80 percent ofnew Canadians come from populations that are at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, including people ofHispanic, Asian, South Asian or African descent. Aboriginal people are three times more likely to develop type 2diabetes. Currently, more than 9 million Canadians are living with diabetes or pre-diabetes. More than 20 peopleare diagnosed with diabetes every hour of every day.Your cheque made out to the Masonic Foundation of Ontario “Project # 2470” will help find a cure.
