IDEATION 14 - YEAR 13 GRAPHICS EXHIBITION

Thank you to all those parents and students who attended the inaugural Year 13 Graphics exhibition held in the staffroom in week 3. The students produced an outstanding exhibition of work showing their design proposals for buildings for the school. Many of the designs consisted of presentation boards, models and computer animated fly throughs allowing the viewers to understand their vision for the future of Girls’ High.

An enjoyable evening was had by all and congratulations to the Graphics students for such an impressive display. The bar has been set for the future.

CGHS GRAPHICS STUDENTS GIFT THEIR WORK TO CHRISTCHURCH HOSPITAL CHILDREN’S WARD

Thank you to all the Year 10 Graphics students who worked so hard to produce Playdoh gift packs for the children. Four representatives of the class went to Christchurch Hospital and presented the Children’s ward with their packs. The packs contained 2 pots of playdoh and 2 cutters made on the 3D printer, all blister packed in a themed gift packaging.

A wonderful effort, gratefully received. The children’s ward is already using the toys in their activities room and for children in isolation.

Well done girls!

L-R: Mr Frier, Madison Hansby, Emily Nicholson-Sell, Emma Glover, Allegra Maslem and 2 Staff from the Christchurch Hospital Childrens’ Activity Centre.

YEAR 9 FUN DAYThis year our year 9 excursion day was changed to a school based activity. Nevertheless it was still a special event and from the girls came a plethora of positive comments. The day began with a presentation to World Vision of $1966.00 that we collected at a mufti day earlier in the year for the Solomon Islands after their flooding, tsunami and earthquake. World Vision are going to deliver the money on our behalf due to the generosity of our students. We then had presentations to Tayla Rose Ahlabrandt, Hannah Bates, Izzy Clarke, Stella Dalgliesh, Lucinda Hutchinson and Olivia Shaw . These students received Tino Pai Rawa Atu Badges because they were nominated by three or more teachers for doing their very best and demonstrating personal excellence in learning.James and Christian from Attitude (programme for schools nation wide) took over at this point and with their flair for comedy and insight delivered an insightful seminar on friendship, self esteem and managing the tricky road being true to yourself. They were both fun and educational. We all shared an amazing morning tea that the girls had prepared. The choice and quality of food was outstanding and everyone enjoyed a half hour of treats and socializing. Once refreshed the morning ended with some games and a emotional resiliency toolbox activity.

YEAR 10 SCIENCE FUTUREINTECH AMBASSADOR’S VISITSLast week the Year 10 Science classes were looking at careers involving Science, Maths and Technology. Each class had a visit from 2 careers ambassadors. A Futureintech ambassador is a young person working in a science related career, who freely gives of their time to talk to school students. We were visited by Victoria Worner (ex CGHS) a Structural Engineer from Opus, Rebecca Dollery an Ecologist from Lincoln University, Rebecca Day a Lab Scientist from Canterbury Health Laboratories, Michelle Peterson a Soil Scientist from Plant and Food Research, Sophie Kennedy from Fulton Hogan, Lilly Sanderson a Civil Engineer from Opus, Eva Harris, an Environmental Scientist at ECan and Jenny Elder a Site Engineer at Opus. Our girls heard stories of how these young women came to be interested in science, the subjects they did at school and beyond, their pathway to their current job and why they enjoy it. We heard about the work these women did and some of the fascinating science they were involved in. Futureintech have an excellent website which the girls then explored and read about lots more interesting careers in this field.

YEAR 9 SCIENCE ROADSHOW VISITThe Year 9 students really enjoyed their Science Roadshow experience this week. They were treated to two very entertaining shows as well as a large number of hands-on experiments, practical activities and demonstrations. Some important biological principles where explained in a humorous and memorable way in the first show and the second one had a chemistry theme culminating in some exciting pops and bangs. It really was an action-packed 80 minutes of thrills and wonder.

YEAR 10 CPIT COMPETITION

On 19 November, 6 girls in Year 10 represented Christchurch Girls’ High School in the Year 10 CPIT Science Competition. We had three girls in each of the two teams, and they competed against Year 10 students from other schools across Christchurch. There were two parts to the competition - carrying out experiments in the lab, where we calibrated a thermometer and identified solids with chemical reactions, and completing a multichoice quiz which included questions from various fields of science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology etc. It was a very challenging competition, but very rewarding and a great learning experience. We weren’t in the first five placings but we had lots of fun. After the competition, the contestants were treated to some Subway for their hard work and effort.

NATURAL TRACK LUGE WORLD CUPHi, my name is Olivia Leslie and at the beginning of December I am part of a three person NZ team who will leave to train and compete in the Natural Track Luge World Cup series in Europe. This year I am very proud to be part of New Zealand’s first ever international Natural track luge female athletes, along with Dunedin’s Tayla Ward. Tayla and I will be the first women lugers from NZ to compete overseas since 1998 and 2002 when Olympian Angela Paul retired. My Brother Jack Leslie will be returning for his 3rd year. We will compete for New Zealand in World cup and World championship races in Italy, German and Austria, accumulating points at each event towards our World Championship Ranking and also to develop our skills as an athlete in Natural Ice Luge. For those of you that don’t know what this is Natural Ice Luge, or naturbahn as it is known in German, is a sister sport to artificial track luge, which is the luge sport contested in the Winter Olympic Games. Natural track consists of luge racing on a flat, curved course, usually winding through a forested or wooded area. While not an Olympic sport, natural track does have its own international circuit that consists of World Championship, World Cup, national and regional races. We use a steering rein and drag our hands and use our legs in order to drive around the tight flat corners. Braking is often required in front of curves and is accomplished by the use of spikes built on the bottom of the shoes. Lugers compete against a timer and are timed to a thousandth of a second, making luge one of the most precisely

timed sports in the world. Please check out http://www.lugenz.com/ or https://www.facebook.com/naseby.luge?fref=ts&ref=br_tf to follow us.I got into this sport 6 years ago as a friend of ours lived in Naseby in the Maniototo area of Central Otago and they had told us about the Naseby Luge track that was being build so we went down one holidays to try it out as it is the only one of its kind in The Southern Hemisphere. Geoff Balme who got this all going has competed for New Zealand in international luge competitions including World Cup and World Championship events; he is also the vice president of the international luge federation. After that we have gone down every year for Luge camp and races, we have had international coaches from all round the world teaching us the proper technique on how to luge. Recently we had the world champion Patrick Pigneter from Italy coaching us in New Zealand. Previously we had Adam Jędrzejko from Poland and Guntis Rekis from Latvia coach. Guntis has had 13 seasons in the International Circuit, including four Olympic Games is a world champion in artificial luge so the technique he had taught us were very different than those that Patrick taught us.This trip we are getting extra time to train on the longer tracks in Italy so hopefully this will help us to get a good feel for the tracks and be competitive in the world cup races. We leave on the 2nd Dec and won’t be returning till the 28 Jan 2015.New Zealanders have competed in Olympic Luge events, including World Cup and World Championship competitions beginning in 1987, although not in recent years. The highlight of this was Angela Paul competing in the 1998 (19th overall in Nagano, Japan) and 2002 (23rd overall in Salt Lake City) Olympic Games. In 2001 Angela consistently finished around the top ten in World Cup Events, injury preventing her from replicating her performances in Salt Lake City.

FINAL SPORTS NEWS FOR 2014

As the end of the year approaches we have groups of students who are busy training and organising trips away before Christmas to represent our school at various sporting competitions. The Junior water polo team are participating in Christchurch at the Secondary Schools’ South Island Junior Water Polo Championships.

The Super Touch team are travelling to Auckland to participate in the NZ Secondary Schools Touch Championships. They are looking at bettering their placing from last year and have been training hard over the last few months plus had an encouraging moment last week when they were victorious over Burnside High School in the term 4 Super Touch competition. They final was played at AMI Stadium and was a very close game. The team have been doing lots of fundraising activities and thank those who have supported them in these.

Lastly we have twelve athletes travelling to Whanganui to participate in the NZSS Athletics Nationals. This is being held 6/7 December and all the girls have been training hard and hope to do well at the meet.

We wish all the girls travelling an enjoyable and successful time. Thank you so much to all the teachers, parents and coaches who will be accompanying the girls, as without your amazing support these athletes would not be able to participate.

2014 has been a very successful year for sport at CGHS. Many of our teams have trained hard and have been rewarded with success, both within Christchurch and nationally. Well done to all girls who have committed to a sport or sports during the year but especially to those who have tasted success after all your hard work. May 2015 bring the same or better results!

The Sports Department would like to thank all parents, teachers and community members who have supported sport at CGHS during the year. No matter how big or little your contribution it is very much appreciated. Transport, coaching, managing, umpiring, taking the score and cheering on from the side line all help make our athletes feel valued and supported and are necessary for all our teams to take the field. Thank you!

Whanau ReportTēnā koutou katoa me ngā mihi i tēnei wahanga whakamutunga o te tau.

Whanau and Pasifika Farewell. On Wednesday November 26, we held our first ever, combined farewell with the Pasifika community of our school. The evening was a wonderful opportunity for both groups to come together and celebrate the school leavers of 2014. We were able to acknowledge and celebrate those students who had committed to kaupapa Māori and Pasifika during their time at CGHS. Thank you to the staff and whanau who came to our hui to help make it a great event for the girls. It was an evening filled with laughter and a few tears. We wish both groups of girls all the best for the future and truly appreciate their contributions to the school.

Rakatahi Awards.A dinner for the Rakatahi awards was held at CPIT on Thursday 27 November. The Rakatahi awards celebrate Māori students who achieve excellence in Canterbury. We had two age group winners from the first rounds of the Rakatahi awards earlier in the year. These two girls then became eligible for the supreme awards which were awarded at the dinner. Our two Poutama(age group) award winners were Laken Wairau and Sapphire Wairau. It was a lovely evening in which we were able to celebrate the hard work that both Wairau girls put in to reaching the pinnacle of sporting success ie selection to New Zealand basketball teams. Congratulations to Laken for placing second in her section and to Sapphire for her first place.

Dear Parents and Friends

The year has ended and how quickly time has flown. I can only thank our entire community: staff, parents and students for what a wonderful year it has been. There will be barely time to catch breath before Christmas is upon us, New Year is here and school starts for 2015.

2015 will start with a new timetable. Every day will start at the same time and every day (except Wednesday) will conclude at the same time. This information has been communicated to you via email and we look forward to the positive benefits it will bring to our students.

I have had the pleasure of listening to Tina Moore, editor of Remix magazine, a leading NZ fashion publication, speak. Far more hip and funky than I could ever be, Tina gave her top tips for winning at life. For those of us with teenage daughters – who never seem to appreciate the “out-dated” wisdom we have to offer - or for those of us trying to make New Year’s resolutions we might actually keep, here are Tina’s Top Tips for Winning at Life.

1. Always present yourself well. 2. Have a life outside of work or study.3. Educate yourself.4. Get some real life work experience.5. Have fun.6. Never leave the house with wet hair. Ever.7. Listen to your nana.8. Wear sunscreen.9. Don’t smoke.10. Be good with your hard earned money.11. Cherish your friends, it’s hard to make new ones.12. Everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, it’s not the end.

I hope every one of our students feels successful and knows how to go about winning at life and I wish you all a very happy Christmas and relaxing holiday season.

Dear Parents and Friends

It is now that time of year where we are attending end of year functions. As a parent, I am experiencing, for the first time, a daughter that is leaving school and is heading out into the big wide world. Apart from making me feel quite old, it has given me the opportunity to attend various leavers’ functions.

First on the list was High Tea where Acland girls have a send off for their Year 13 leavers. This was a great reflection on their last five years at Acland and the school and showcased the spirit and camaraderie that these girls have built up over this time. The evening was a lot of fun and thanks to Dee, our Hostel Manager, for putting together a great entertainment package.

Last week I also attended the Pacifica and Whanau Hui which also recognized those girls leaving Christchurch Girls’ High from the Pacifica and Whanau communities. Once again this demonstrated the camaraderie these girls have developed during their time at the school. We also got a sneak preview into their trips away to Polyfest and the National Nga Manu Korero speech competitions in Napier which looked like a huge amount of fun and great for community spirit.

On Thursday this week I will be attending the Year 13 leavers’ dinner and I have no doubt I will see a similar sense of spirit in amongst all our Year 13 leavers. I am very much looking forward to it and of course on Monday we will have our final end of year prizegiving to wrap up the year.

The overwhelming feeling I get from these events is the pride and spirit these girls show and, I have no doubt, the lifelong friendships that have been developed during their time at school. Whilst academic achievement is at the forefront of the Boards’ strategic thinking, we are placing a lot of emphasis on the spirit and culture within the school community, especially the girls. We want to ensure that as they move through life they will not only have been well prepared but they will also look back on their school years with a lot of positive memories.

On that note, I would like to wish all our Year 13 leavers all the best for their future endeavours.

I look forward to seeing you all at final assembly but for those of you who can’t make it, have a great Christmas and a relaxing break.

SCHOOL DIARY FOR 2015 - YEAR 12 and 13

Years 12 and 13 Students in 2015 will not automatically be receiving a School Diary. Often these students require a more substantial organiser and this would make an excellent Christmas gift.

YEAR 10 CLASSES 2015

Comprehensive achievement information is used to arrange the Year 10 classes. Students’ performances across the whole year determine class placement. Students therefore do not necessarily remain with the same group in Year 10.If you have any concerns or queries or need to pass on any information please contact Ms Eder, Ph.348 0849. Unless you make information known this year, it is unlikely any requests will be responded to in 2014 once classes have been confirmed.
