One Use Case: Connecting People Many Use Cases

Shouldn’t we reconsider how to make best use of 5G in order to address the needs of the new use cases?

Important Enablers (Selection)

Technical Enablers Changes in Spectrum Regulation

3GPP Activities on “Non-Public Networks”

e.g. Vertical_LAN / TR 23.734

Local Spectrum Allocations

(Example: Germany)

Private Network Identifiers

MCC1 999 + MNC2 + (New) Private Network ID

Limiting Access to Private Networks

e.g. introduction of ‘Closed Access Groups’

Interworking between

Private and Public Networks

Nationwide

Different Options for Private 5G Networks (Examples)

The private CN1 may be located within

the factory (assumed here) or at a

remote location (+ possible splitting).

Private spectrum may be directly

obtained from the regulator or sub-

leased from a traditional MNO2.

The APN (option #4) is assumed to be

terminated in the MNO2 CN.

Major Aspects for Private 5G Networks in Manufacturing

1 Performance

Indoor deployment for optimal coverage & performance

Network should be optimized for industrial applications

t t

DL UL DL UL D U D U D U D U D U

eMBB-optimized network Factory-optimized network

2 Autonomy

Production must not be

interrupted by temporary

outage of public network

Example: Cable cut by

excavator

3 Security

Production data is very sensitive no security compromises

Factory owners want to have full control of used equipment,

algorithms, implementations & people having access to it

4 Costs

Investments needed to operate

private 5G factory networks

TCO consideration necessary

5 Vendor Lock-In

Vendor lock-in should be avoided to keep commercial flexibility

Installed equipment of third parties may represent a very high

hurdle as replacing equipment is complex & expensive

6 Worldwide Applicability

Ideally the same solution can

be used all over the world

Global market & production

Major Aspects for Private 5G Networks in Manufacturing

7 Dependence on 3rd Parties

Don’t depend on goodwill of 3rd parties

in urban areas, where traditional consumer

business may have top priority

in rural areas, where network deployment

may start late

9 Flexibility

Support easy & flexible change of network

topology & deployment

Support easy reconfiguration of the network

8 Ease-of-Use

Usage and configuration of 5G infrastructure

should be easy

Need for huge competence build-up should

be limited

10 Service Continuity

Support roaming and service continuity

between private and public networks

Page 14: Private 5G Networks - VDE ITG · private 5G factory networks TCO consideration necessary 5 Vendor Lock-In Vendor lock-in should be avoided to keep commercial flexibility Installed
