Priorities in the New Year by Rev. Catherine Nance
Picking out just the right calendar. Santa always brings my boys new wall calendars for Christmas. Usually a Batman-themed one for James; rock & roll for Steven. I remember my mother loved the calendars the Girl Scouts used to sell. We had one hanging by our telephone in the kitchen – back when telephones hung on a wall! She liked the large squares and the fact that it was non-slick paper; no ink smears! You have new calendars – probably electronic and app-happy. Lots of research has come out lately about the importance of writing things down with pencil and paper. However you keep track of dates, go ahead and put the church dates down as PRIORITY. In this new year, we remember that ‘church’ is not just an activity but a community. We make commitments to God and to each other that we will continue to grow in our discipleship to transform the world! Of course, each Sunday morning there is worship at 8:15 and 10:30 with Sunday School at 9:15. Everyone is invited to worship with us at 6:30 pm on Wednesday nights for Celebrate Recovery – a wonderful mid-week lift! Your gift to Wesley Woods Throughout December each of you was asked to give a little to Camp Wesley Woods as part of the annual Christmas offering.
In the end you came through in a big way as the offering grew to
$16,500. On Monday, Tony Lea, the director of Camp Wesley Woods stopped by 1st UMC to pick up the check from the offering. Rev. Sarah Slack who coordinates the church’s outreach effort and Senior pastor, Rev. Catherine Nance presented Tony with the gift. The money will be used to help purchase a vehicle with towing capacity. THANK YOU so much for your generosity. If you would like to learn more about Camp Wesley Woods visit them online at www.campwesleywoods.com . Registration for 2019 Summer Camps is now open.
New Year … New Socks Our efforts to Go.Do. continue in 2019 with an opportunity each month for you to help in
some way. On the last two Sundays in January, we ask that you bring in NEW pairs of socks that will be sent to the Shades of Grace Church in Kingsport. Located in downtown Kingsport, fifty to sixty percent of the Shades of Grace congregation is homeless. In addition, the church serves a large group of low or no income people by serving meals, providing shower facilities, GED assistance, prayer and friendship. Let’s see how many socks we can collect to help Shades of Grace continue its work of serving our neighbors in need.

A Centennial Conversation January’s Conversation Matters event will be a bit different than ones in the past. On January 27th, a group called Voices of the Valley will present a one act play written by Joyce Leo and based on interviews by Alcoa historian Shirley Carr Clowney and Maryville College Sociology Professor Dr. Susan Ambler. The play documents the lives of African-American men and their families who were recruited to work on the potboiler rooms of ALCOA Inc. Alcoa is celebrating its Centennial in 2019.

By the time many of you read this newsletter, a couple of the studies for the New Year will already be underway. On Wednesdays throughout the month, Rev. Sarah Slack is leading a study on Mary and how to see God through the eyes of a mother. At Celebrate Recovery, Rev. Catherine Nance is leading a 4-week healthy living study on how to manage stress by praying the Psalms during the share group time at 7:40 pm on Wednesday nights.
Here’s a look at other small group studies getting underway in January at 1st UMC.
Perhaps no Old Testament event so dramatically illustrates God's persistent desire to relate to His children as the building of the tabernacle in the wilderness and no Old Testament event so richly prefigured the coming of the true Tabernacle, Jesus Christ. Bonnie VanPelt leads this updated Beth Moore study on Tuesdays starting January 15th in room 152. There is a $20 charge for the workbooks. You can bring your money to the first class. Share group news
Share groups and small group studies are an important part of Celebrate Recovery. On Wednesday nights in January, Rev. Catherine Nance is helping you “de-stress” as she teaches you how to use the Psalms as a guide to prayer, meditation and centering.
Youth are also getting a chance to help talk out some issues that might have them stressed out. During the share group time on Wednesdays at 7:40, youth in 7th through 12th grade can participate in “You Can’t Talk About That at Church!” a time set aside to talk about the “real stuff” in a casual and safe atmosphere. This group meets in room 153.

On Sunday, January 6th we
celebrated Epiphany which is the
day God and God’s saving works
became known to people outside
the Jewish community.
To mark that celebration and a
New Year, Rev. Sarah Slack
offered up Star Gifts or Star
Words to anyone who wanted one.
Each person is to consider how
their star word might speak to
their life in this new year.
On this page is a word search
using some of those Star Words.
Have fun finding all the words
and if you don’t have a Star Word
already use one of these or see
Rev. Sarah Slack to get one.
