The Chutney Project- Preserving the learning

Stop Press! See inside for details of our fund raising disco on Saturday 26th April 2014

Several of our Printers are involved in a new and exciting project in partnership with Red2Green, Darwin Nurseries and Prospects Trust. The Project is being supported by Cambridgeshire County Council’s Community Learning Trust Fund. We will be making our own brand chutney from home grown produce. We have planted seeds to grow vegetables, such as onions and courgettes.

In January we went to Red2Green, where over 30 of us tasted various types of chutney, evaluated them and gave feedback to the whole group. Later we met here in Burwell for a design session and looked at the importance of getting the right information on labels and how to make them attractive to shoppers. At the next meeting, we will agree the label design and start to think about where to sell the chutney. Work experience

Dan expressed an interest in doing some work experience. Julie, one of our volunteers who works at Budgens helped set up the opportunity in December last year. Initially Dan worked for 1½ hours on a Tuesday which has now increased to 2½ hours. Julie told us, “Dan works as part of a team on a variety of jobs. Mainly working on the shop floor, Dan helps to unpack deliveries, restock the shelves and has packed customers shopping for them. Dan has learnt retail skills such as stock rotation and how to print price labels. He also helps with tidying the shelves and assisting customers to find items in the shop.”

Dan has made great progress and is keen to learn new skills and he is particularly good at using the hand-held devise to check prices. He is familiar with the layout of the shop and the work routine. Dan is a friendly, polite and a valued member of the Budgen’s team. Vikki, who has been assessing Dan, said “ Dan has made huge progress. The experience has enabled Dan to understand more about being employed and the expectations that go with having a job.”

Dan said, “I am really enjoying working at Budgens and it has helped me towards future goals. It’s a great opportunity working at Budgens and they are all lovely people. I would also like to thank Julie who has supported me.”

Training– it’s not all about printing At this time of year we are working with Printer’s to set new training targets. These goals could be to learn to use a new machine in the Print Centre or to do a daily task such as health and safety checks or maybe revisit and practise a skill learnt some time ago. As a real business with customers to serve we also have opportunities for Printers to learn reception and customer service skills; to answer the telephone, pass callers to the relevant staff member and be that first point of contact when people come into the building. Another target is recycling. As you can imagine we have paper to recycle, but we also sort all our waste to enable us to recycle as much as possible. Every day, a Printer will empty the items into the appropriate bins and use the recycling area in the nearby car park. As well as learning within the Print Centre, we support Printers to get out and about in the village. Burwell has several shops close by and many of our Printers visit them regularly to buy supplies, such as milk. After a

period of training, learning the route to walk and how to cross roads safely, Printers can go independently or with another Printer to do the shopping. This gives people the opportunity to experience using shops and all that it involves, money skills etc.

Another useful target is to visit the Post Office. We regularly post customers print work to them by recorded delivery. Recently Josh has been working towards this target. After a few trips to the Post Office with support staff, Josh’s most recent visit was with another Printer, Martin. This is also a great opportunity for Martin to share his experience and support a fellow Printer. Targets are reviewed regularly and as Printers achieve them they move on to the next one. It’s not just about the printing at Burwell Print!

New from the Design Room

The new price list for 2014 is now available. As well as a different size and colour scheme it contains the new print items we produce. These include PVC banners for outdoors, pop-up banners and flags, ideal for promoting an event or business.

Over the past few years we have produced yearbooks for pupils leaving local schools. These books are a record of their school years including photographs and memories. Also, we can create photobooks. In the age of digital cameras, photographs are often stored on computers and we forget how lovely it is to look through an actual album of photographs. They also make fantastic gifts. In addition to our print price list we are in the process of compiling a clothing catalogue. This will contain all the garments we can supply for printing, including a large sportswear range. Our revamped web site is now complete and has a link to the new price list, and once complete the clothing catalogue will be added. This will enable customers to view and order garments online for printing.

Lino Printing Recently Vaughan and I had the opportunity to attend a one day Lino Print course at Curwen Print. I have done some of this type of printing many years ago at college but was looking forward to trying out the techniques again. After our tutor demonstrated what to do, we experimented using sharp tools to carve and make different marks on the lino. This gave us the confidence to try out a bigger, more complex design. We rolled printing ink onto our lino blocks, then using their huge Albion press to print our designs.

I enjoyed every element of the day, but particularly the printing. Using the amazing old machines, experimenting with colour and getting different effects by repeat printing was really interesting. We brought our prints back to show everyone. Now we are thinking of ways we can share what we have learnt and maybe do some similar printing here. It would be great to do a Lino Print workshop with our Printers one day.

Granddad Vaughan

Congratulations to Vaughan who became a Granddad for the first time! Baby Eddie was born on14 January. What a cutie!

Busy Printers Many of our Printers have sprung into action this spring! They are out and about on holidays and day trips. Usman is away for 6 weeks visiting family in Pakistan and Qatar for a wedding. Peter is soon to go on a cruise. He has been talking about it for weeks and is so looking forward to wearing his new suit for dinner each night!

Nick has been to see The X factor Live Show recently at the O2. Nick said, “It was amazing. I enjoyed seeing the X factor stars sing live.” In May, Nick is returning to the O2 to see Katie Perry in concert.

Anne- our wordsearch fan We received a lovely letter from Anne in Littleport who really enjoys the Printer’s Progress wordsearches. Thank you Anne for writing to us, and we hope you like this edition’s wordsearch.

Printing firsts

We have been printing the latest edition of Clunch magazine and for the first time it has a colour cover and it looks great. Also for the first time, we are printing The Link parish magazine. It contains colour pages and cover. The Konika Minolta has some clever insertion trays which can collate the black with the colour pages. The result is a fantastic looking magazine.

Celebration finale!

Don’t forget your passport! Just a little reminder now the holiday season is fast approaching that we offer a passport photo service. We have a designated area to take your photograph and can print them while you wait. The cost is £5 for six

photographs which comply with the Passport Office rules and are cut to the correct size for passport applications. So, why not come and see us and take the hassle out of your holiday preparations!

Julie Poole and I facilitated a workshop for six of our eight Trustees one Saturday in March. We shared information and some of our experiences of supporting and working alongside people with a learning disability or autistic spectrum disorder.

We all look forward to talking about some of our suggestions with everybody at Burwell Print so that we continue to improve what we do and how we do it. Thank you to all who attended and for making it a fun and informative workshop. By Sue Anderson.
