While based at MIT from February through May 2018, they will produce working papers and teaching videos of their findings and present their research to the MIT community. The MIT- UTM Malaysia Sustainable Cities Program (MSCP) is a five-year effort, initiated and run by faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Universiti of Teknologi of Malaysia (UTM), with generous support by the Ministry of Education Malaysia. The MSCP mission is to study and document sustainable city development efforts in Malaysia. Visiting scholars from around the world spend September through December conducting research in Malaysia. They spend February through May at MIT developing research findings into instructional materials to enhance and extend the teaching of sustainable city development across universities in the global South. Each January, graduate students and faculty at MIT and UTM partner with UTM to study, review, and refine the direction of the research in progress. First Policy Paper for Melaka State GovernmentMelaka, 3rd May 2017 - Congratulations to Institut Sultan Iskandar forproducingthefirstpolicypaper,OpenDataPolicyfor Melaka State Government, an outcome of the Newton-Ungku Omarinternationalgrant,ISI&FutureCitiesCatapultUK(FCC)in 2016.

The handing over of the policy took place on 2nd May 2017 at the launching of City Development in Malaysia Project (2017-2022) in conjunction with Melaka Sustainable Cities Conference & GreenExhibition2017officiatedbytheChiefMinisterofMelaka,Hon. Datuk Seri Utama Ir Hj Idris bin Hj Haron.

The objective of this policy is to provide guidelines for conducting the open data policy so as to encourage the sharing of data and collaboration among government agencies in Melaka. The policy supports the Malaysia Act 2015 – Pelaksanaan Data Terbuka Sektor Awam,definingthebigdataandopendatainthecontextof Melaka, in addition to principles and advantage in open data as well as the strategy for open data at the state level.

The leading partner, Institut Sultan Iskandar was led by Prof. MohdHamdanAhmadand co-researcherDr. IrinaSafitri Zen.Meanwhile our UK leading partner FCC, headed by Dr. Catherine Mulligan and co-research Dr Adam Rae. Welcome Our New Executive Director

ISI is pleased to announce the appointment of Assoc. Prof. Dr Syed Ahmad Iskandar Syed Ariffin as itsnewExecutiveDirectorwitheffectfrom1st May 2017. He replaces Prof. Dr. Mohd Hamdan Ahmad, who has been appointed as the Dean of Faculty of Built Environment UTM. Dr Syed has served as the Deputy Director I since July 2010, and has already provided many valuable contributions to ISI.

Welcome Our New Deputy Director ISI is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Khairul Anwar bin Mohamed Khaidzir as its new Deputy Director I, with effect from 1st August2017. He is also a senior lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Built Environment, UTM.

Heritage Mapping for Royal Towns Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, 26 September 2017 - Assoc. Prof. Dr Syed Ahmad Iskandar SyedAriffin attended a session on HeritageMapping for Royal Towns Malaysia on the 25 September 2017. This research was funded by the National Heritage Department and organised by KALAM, UTM. Dr Syed has served the National Heritage Department as the member of the Expert Committee on National Heritage for the past 10 years.

Development of Tanjung Pelepas Ecological Park (TPEP)

This project is in furtherance to the study entitled ‘Research Project on Conceptual Master Plan of Tanjung Pelepas Ecological Park’ or better known as TPEP which was completed in September 2016.

A Memorandum of Agreement between ISI and Johor Port Authority was signed on 19 April 2017. The project cost of RM40m for four years starting from April 2017 until April 2021.

Consultants are currently at Stage 1 working on matters concerning Kelulusan Merancang. At the same time, works of Stage 2 on the preparation of tender documents are in progress.

Earlier, a workshop for the research part of this project, ‘TPEP Sustainable Business Strategy Framework’ was held on 16 August 2017 at Bilik Jamuan, Dewan Sultan Iskandar, UTM Johor.

Kuala Lumpur, 25 September 2017 - Assoc. Prof. Dr Syed Ahmad Iskandar SyedAriffin led a 3-day workshop to revisethe Manual of Accreditation for Architecture Programme and to prepare the new Manual of Accreditation for Interior Design Programme. He is a senior member of Council of Architectural Accreditation & Education (CAAEM), also known as Majlis Akreditasi Program Senibina Malaysia (MAPS).

In2013,heledateamofprofessionalsandacademicstoassistthe Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM) developed and published ‘The Manual of Accreditation of Architecture Programme’, a very important policy outlining the standards of architecture programme in the country. The workshop was organised by the Board of Architects Malaysia from 22nd until 24th September 2017 at the Dorsett Kuala Lumpur.

Promoting Campus Living Lab

Melaka, 7 September 2017 -OurHeadofSustainabilityUnit,Dr Irina Safitri Zen spoke at the Green Cities Conference -‘Leveraging Regional Cooperation and Integration for a Green Cities Network in ASEAN’. The conference was held on the 5th and 6th of September 2017.

The two-day conference centered on discussions on green and livable cities in the Southeast Asian region towards the creation of an ‘Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Green Cities Network’. The event served as an important regional platform for disseminating lessons on the development and implementation of Green Climate Action Plans (GCAP), inviting ASEAN member states to jointly lead the path towards green growth in Asia.

The conference was supported by the State Government of Melaka, Melaka Green Technology Corporation and Center for Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Regional Cooperation. Her presentation entitled “Campus Living Lab-Accelerating the Green Cities Initiatives” gave the opportunity for Dr. Irina to share insights on how green campus in UTM functions as living lab in accelerating the green cities initiatives.

Three other invited speakers were Prof. Dr. Ir. Shamsul Rizal, the Vice Chancellor of Syiah Kuala University Indonesia, Asst. President Dr. Korn Sornlertlumvanich from Prince of Songkla University Thailand and Mr. Thiagarajan Nadesan, Head of Education and Markets WWF-Malaysia.

UIA 2017 Seoul World Architects Congress

Seoul, 6 September 2017-From3rduntil5thSeptember2017,Associate Professor Dr. Syed Ahmad Iskandar Syed Ariffinattended the UIA 2017 Seoul World Architects Congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea. He was invited as a speaker for a Special Session - ‘Southeast Asian Houses: Expanding Tradition’ and delivered a speech entitled ‘Gender Equality in Malay Building Tradition’.

The UIA world congresses are a premier forum for professionals and future leaders in the field of architecture to exchange thebestandlatestpractices,visionsandfirst-handexperience.

International Conference on Science, Engineering, and the Social Sciences (ICSESS)

Johor Bahru, 19 May 2017 - International Conference on Science, Engineering, and the Social Sciences or ICSESS was successfully held from 17th until 18th May 2017 at the Faculty of Computing, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Johor.

The conference was organized by the International Student Society - Nigeria (ISS-Nigeria) and supported by Institut Sultan Iskandar.

A total of 120 papers were presented and 89 papers are being considered for journal publications.

Prof. Dr. Gurupiah Mursib wins Academic Publication Council of Malaysia– Higher Education Ministry 2016 Award (MAPIM-KPT)Kuala Terengganu, 30 April 2017 - “Regionalisme dalam Seni Bina Malaysia Era Moden, Pascamoden dan Global” published by Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka has won the Academic Publication Council of Malaysia–Higher Education Ministry 2016 Award - Best Scientific BookAward in the field of SocialScience and Humanities.

Assoc. Prof. Dr Gurupiah Mursib, our head of ISI Kuala Lumpur and Prof. Dr. Mohd Tajuddin Rasdi both received RM7,000.00 monetaryaward,plaqueandcertificateinaneventheldatDuyongConventionCentre,Pulau Duyong, Kuala Terengganu on 29 April 2017. The award was presented by the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh.

The book captures the historical development of architectural regionalism in Malaysia, for the first time, presenting the historical documentation of Malaysia’s extensivearchitecture, extending to the modern early architecture, post modern and global era.

Site Possession for Kolej Komuniti Sibu

Site Possession for Kolej Komuniti Sibu was succesfully achieved on 14th August 2017. Kolej Komuniti Sibu branch is one of 10 chosen sites in the Kolej Komuniti expansion programme for the PILS™ KPT-BOSproject.

Since early 2017, two polytechnics have been completed and succesfully handed over to the Ministry of Higher Education; Politenik Besut and Politeknik Bagan Datok on 17 March 2017 and 15 April 2017 respectively.
