Emerald, the 2013 Pantone Color of the Year, shows up on Vincenza wallpaper from Antonina Vella.

Designers comment on Emerald, the Pantone color of the year

Wizard of Oz would be green with envy.

That icon of the Emerald City

undoubtedly would agree it's the perfect

shade. So would the residents of "Downton

Abbey."

But the 2013 Color of the Year? How

much Emerald can one real-life home

hold?

Trend forecaster Pantone Color Institute

picked Emerald – a rich bluish green – as

its must-have, go-to hue for fashion and

home decor. It's a color-wheel 180 from

Pantone's 2012 Color of the Year,

Tangerine Tango, and has drawn strong

reaction from interior designers and home

experts.

"I love the idea of emerald in our

interiors," said Sacramento interior

designer Kerrie Kelly, noting that her

name does give her an inclination toward

green. "When using green, you can go bold

with a wall or drapery treatment or keep it

quiet by using it to simply accent a space

through pillows and accessories. Any

lacquered piece in emerald green is sure to

be a showstopper."

"What were they thinking?" said Mary

Lawlor, manager of color marketing for

San Carlos-based Kelly-Moore Paints.

"That pick is causing quite a stir. Pantone

is the industry leader, but … it's somewhat

bizarre.

"It's kind of difficult to put it back into the

home," Lawlor added. "For many people,

it's a flashback to your parents' living room

and big green couch."

Emerald immediately brings to mind

brilliant precious gems, said Pantone's

color predictors and fashion industry

experts. It's sophisticated and luxurious.

But it's a color invested with so much

added meaning including growth, renewal,

prosperity, healing and unity.

"Green is the most abundant hue in

nature," said Leatrice Eiseman, Pantone's

executive director. "The human eye sees

more green than any other color in the

spectrum.

"As it has throughout history, multifaceted

emerald continues to sparkle and

fascinate," Eiseman said. "Symbolically,

emerald brings a sense of clarity, renewal

and rejuvenation, which is so important in

today's complex world. This powerful and

universally appealing tone translates easily

to both fashion and home interiors."

Emerald already has popped up on runway

shows for major fashion designers such as

Zac Posen. Makers of home fabrics and

furnishings also have jewel-hued greens,

ready for consumers.

"There's been a reserved excitement

around green recently," said Gina Shaw,

York Wallcovering's vice president of

product development. "We see this very

usable and sophisticated emerald green

– as well as lighter shades of it – trending

in both apparel and home fashions this

year."

Said Jennifer McConnell, Pearson Textiles

vice president of design, "The look and

feel of home décor is trending toward

comfort and relaxation. Deep green has

long symbolized prosperity and good

fortune, and this elegant emerald feels

particularly serene."

Emerald fits another over-riding trend for

2013: A longing for luxury.

That may explain our American

infatuation with "Downton Abbey," the

opulent British costume drama set in an

immense Victorian mansion. (Season 3

premieres at 9 p.m. Jan. 6 on Channel 6.)

Coincidentally, the Earl of Grantham's

drawing room wall covering is a rich

almost-emerald green.

"The word for 2013 is luxe," said Katie

Reynolds, Ace Hardware's national design

expert. "People are coming out of the lean

years and they want to put the luxe back

in their homes.

"In 2013, we'll see a lot of rich colors –

glamorous purples, deep browns, jewel

tones," Reynolds said. "Grays have been

hot for a while, but we'll see a lot of rich,

deep tones such as slate and especially

charcoal.

"I love emerald and jade," she added. "I

love the glamour and what those colors

invoke."

Bold colors lead to bold patterns. Expect

to see geometric prints in home

furnishings and wallpaper plus ethnic-

inspired Ikat and Moroccan designs.

Subtle ombre shading also is in.

As a counter to Pantone's Emerald, some

paint manufacturers have introduced their

own 2013 Color of the Year. Glidden

Paint, for example, named Indigo Night

– a deep blue-toned purple – as its 2013

top pick.

Kelly-Moore tabbed five colors for 2013:

Polenta (light yellow), Knapped Flint

(dark gray), Cascade Blue, Spring Meadow

(a medium green) and Blossom Park

(similar to Pantone's Honeysuckle pink,

the 2011 Color of the Year).

"Yellow is not going away at all," said

Kelly-Moore's Lawlor. "It's a color of

optimism, and it feels so good with

scrubbed white. But now, yellow is softer

and fresher."

Dark grays such as Slate (in new

appliances, tile and flooring) have become

a popular neutral, even in kitchens. Those

not-quite-blacks go great with granite and

stainless steel.

"All that granite – it's not going away

either," Lawlor noted. "You need to work

with it."

Dark purple can be dramatic, too.

Sacramento's Kelly used a the hue for a

knockout dining room accented by an

emerald green lacquered sideboard. "The

combination creates a stunning space,"

Kelly said.

Reynolds suggested using emerald in

unexpected places. "It's a wonderful accent

color," she said. "I love it inside cabinets.

In an all-white kitchen, you open the

cabinets and get a shot of this great

emerald. It's super unexpected."

This jewel-box color may be just the start

of a glittery new age, extending into 2014

and beyond.

A COLOR FOR EVERY YEAR

Trend forecaster Pantone Color Institute

annually sets a palette for fashion and

home decor, pulling from current trends,

tastes and national mood. From those

color swatches, Pantone names one tone as

its Color of the Year.

Since picking sky-blue Cerulean in 2000 as

its "Color of the Millennium," Pantone has

stuck with blue tones, choosing five

different blues in 14 years (including two

shades of turquoise). A lot of trend

watchers thought another blue – deep

ocean Monaco Blue – would be the choice

for 2013, but Pantone went for deep green

Emerald instead.

Over the years, some colors – such as

red-hot Chili Pepper – have had more

staying power than others, sticking around

from several seasons. But others – such as

dusky Sand Dollar – seem like a ripple on

the beach, quickly fading from memory.

Here are recent Pantone's Colors of the

Year:

2013: Emerald

2012: Tangerine Tango

2011: Honeysuckle (bright pink)

2010: Turquoise

2009: Mimosa (yellow)

2008: Blue Iris

2007: Chili Pepper (red)

2006: Sand Dollar (soft beige pink)

2005: Blue Turquoise

2004: Tigerlily (red orange)

2003: Aqua Sky

2002: True Red

2001: Fuchsia Rose

2000: Cerulean

Emerald is the colour of 2013, a tone that plays perfectly within the trending colour palette of softer and more muted hues, says York Wallcoverings’ Gina Shaw. (Shown is Vincenza wallpaper in Ivory on Kelly GM1274).

Trends: What’s in store for 2013

What’s trending in homes this year? Our

crystal ball readers reveal all.

The market

In keeping with the national trend, the

Ottawa housing market won’t exactly be

red hot in 2013.

Housing starts will be down and the resale

market slow during the first part of the

year, then rally in the second half,

according to the fall 2012 issue of Housing

Market Outlook, which is put out by

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

CMHC predicts mortgage rates will stay

low, helping buoy the market.

The agency expects the average price of a

new single-family home in Ottawa to hit

almost $490,000 in 2013. The relative

affordability of multi-unit housing,

including condos, is one reason that

market will outperform single-family

homes again this year.

John Herbert, executive director of the

Greater Ottawa Home Builders’

Association, says the housing market will

slip but have a “soft landing. The decline

in starts may not affect prices.”

Lot sizes will continue to shrink as

developers try to control building costs

and competition will heat up as builders

jockey for sales.

Watch for continued slim pickings in

rental units, says CMHC.

House design

The shift from traditional to more

modern, urban design will continue to

accelerate. “Cleaner lines, big open

spaces” are the order of the day, according

to Shawn Bellman, director of marketing

at Richcraft Homes. In keeping with that

trend, the company — which has not

abandoned its traditional lines — recently

launched new executive towns with a

strongly modern, urban sensibility; it will

also introduce a new, modern elevation

option in its singles this year.

That’s all in line with the National

Kitchen and Bath Association rankings

published in 2012. For the first time, the

ratings found the more modern

transitional style, which includes some

traditional elements, had finally

outstripped purely traditional kitchen

design in popularity.

Last year, Tartan Homes, anticipating a

growing demand for multi-generational

housing, introduced floor plans such as

the Port Huron, featuring a main-floor

guest suite with an insulated noise wall,

walk-in closet and bathroom. Being on the

main floor, it’s ideal for an aging parent.

Tartan’s Kawartha model has a study that

can be transformed into an optional guest

suite.

Meanwhile Kevin O’Shea, Ottawa

operations manager for Monarch Homes,

says in an email that many buyers are

requesting upgrades to hardwood in

second-floor bedrooms and quartz

countertops in the kitchen.

Speaking of kitchens, Bellman says those

islands just keep getting bigger as they

become gathering spots for family and

friends. However, he says islands are

vanishing from some smaller condos in

Toronto, replaced by — gasp! — dining

room tables. He’s not sure if Richcraft will

do that here when it launches three new

condo projects this year.

Renovations

Kitchens, bathrooms and basements will

continue to lead the renovation hit parade

in 2013.

John Liptak of Ottawa’s OakWood

Renovation Experts is seeing a shift from

colonial and traditional style toward

modern European finishes. OakWood will

introduce a line of kitchen and bath

cabinetry in 2013 that includes clean,

furniture-style design.

CMHC’s third-quarter Housing Market

Outlook forecast 2012 renovation

spending in Ontario would exceed $24

billion. However, it predicted a slowdown

in 2013 in part because households

typically renovate in the first year of

ownership and house sales in the province

are expected to moderate in the coming

months.

In 2011, Ottawa homeowners spent an

average of $12,853 on renovations.

Creaking joints

When it comes to housing designed for an

aging population (bungalows with wider

doorways for wheelchair access, for

example), don’t expect an upsurge this

year. Although the latest Canadian census

figures show a rapidly aging population,

home builders are conservative and won’t

start building large numbers of aging-

friendly homes until they get a clear signal

from the marketplace.

The United States may be ahead of us on

this one. Universal design such as wider

doorways and halls is a growing influence

in that country, according to Sharon

Dworkin Bell, senior vice-president for

Multifamily and 50+ Housing at the

National Association of Home Builders.

“Whenever builders are just climbing out

of a bad economic period like the one

we’ve had, they often rethink what they’re

doing.”

However, she says building for an aging

demographic will still be an incremental

process.

The great outdoors

Ottawa landscape architect John

Szczepaniak says to look for evermore

stylish and comfortable outdoor furniture

as we continue to blur the line between

indoor and outdoor living.

He says natural materials such as Erosan

(limestone sandblasted to bring out its

veining when wet) are becoming a key

element of outdoor decor. Ornamental

grasses and plants with coloured foliage,

like sedums and coral bells, continue to be

favourites.

will continue this year.

Lowes, for example, recently introduced

Nest, an easily installed programmable

thermostat that “learns” what

temperatures you like and creates a

heating/cooling schedule around those

preferences. At $249, it also connects to

Wi-Fi for remote control.

New on the Canadian market: VideoCare

(videocare.com). Roughly $100 a month,

the service provides touch screen video

connectivity especially suited to elderly

people who have difficulty with a mouse

or keyboard. It allows easy contact with

family, caregivers and others.

Colour, light and pythons

Emerald is the colour of 2013, according

to the Pantone Color Institute, which

establishes colour standards for home,

fashion and other industries. Associated

with renewal and the environment,

emerald is turning up in paints, wall

coverings and fabrics.

Ottawa interior designer Francine

Bingham says she’s also seeing warmer

colours such as turquoise-shaded teal and

greeny yellows starting to accent the grey

tones that have been so popular in recent

years.

That’s counter-intuitive since happier

colours don’t usually trend when the

economy is hurting. “Maybe it’s a sign of

good things to come,” she says. Either that

or we’re just in denial about the state of

the world.

A recent issue of House Beautiful says

brass ornaments and grass cloth wallpaper

will take off this year. As well, the

publication is big on filtered daylight

(think filmy window treatments) because

diffused light warms space and softens

hard edges — not a bad thing if you see

your home as a bulwark against harsh

reality.

Look also for decor trends inspired by

fashions that graced the autumn 2012

runway. That means everything from

houndstooth-styled wallpaper by York

Wallcoverings to animal skin-inspired

designs including, from the Pearson

furniture company, a small drinks table

covered in Italian leather with a python

design. It sells for $1,725.

Great Expectations, York Wallcoverings

Gallery Hopping

Over the past few seasons, we’ve seen it all

in terms of bold wall coverings. Designers

have used 3D forms, feathers, color and

texture to draw eyes to a room’s vertical

surfaces. And now, another interest-added

wall solution is trending in hotel design:

art wallpaper.

Artist Oren Sherman’s digital wallpaper

line, for example, is a show-stopping

collection that’s based on his original

hand-printed art. The bold paper

collection is best described by the pattern

names, including Tickled Pink, Orange

Lace and Amsterdam Swirl.

And Blik, a surface graphics company, has

partnered with a wrapping paper provider

to create high-end “wall wraps” printed

with high-resolution photography. The

Blik x WRAPPED is a self-adhesive vinyl

that can be installed on any smooth, flat

surface.

Other companies are incorporating art by

printing patterns that appear to be

sketched by hand. Among those options

are York Wallcoverings’s Great

Expectations, a city scene that’s printed on

eco-friendly paper; and Graham &

Brown’s Goddess, which features thin

sketches of a face hidden amongst the

branches of a tree.

Designers, how are you incorporating art

into your work in unconventional ways?

Green with Envy

If you love the color of money, you may

want to invest into Pantone’s color of the

year: Emerald green. The color is known

as Pantone 17-5641.

Last year’s color, Tangerine Tango, was

seen in everything from kitchen cookware,

linens, and of course fashion. This year,

the deep jewel-tone shade of Emerald

green will do the same.

“Emerald green is an appropriate color

choice for 2013 because of the association

of the color to growth, prosperity, healing

and unity,” says Anne Smith, interior

designer at June Roesslein Interiors in

Frontenac. “It’s the second-most favored

color, following blue,” she adds.

Incorporating Emerald green into any

color scheme could easily be accomplished

using throw pillows, throws, candles,

accessories and plants.

We’re celebrating the color choice with

exciting home décor, fashion accessories

and beauty finds.

5 design tips to make them green with envy

It's that time of year when the world falls

in love with a color. Typically deemed the

"color of the year," the hue depends on

whom you ask. For example, Sherwin-

Williams has chosen a midcentury-tinged

blue called "Aloe" as its top color.

Benjamin Moore, meanwhile, chose

Lemon Sorbet.

But the juggernaut of color forecasting,

Pantone, announced that emerald green

will be the color of 2013. And so it shall

be. We asked a local stylist to offer some

quick ways that people can incorporate

that color into their home decor:

1. Paint. The easiest, quickest and most

cost-effective way to transform any living

space.

2. Pillows. Another affordable option. I

always change my pillows with the seasons

and/or simply my mood at the time.

Having a neutral sofa helps with the

transition.

3. Lighting. One gorgeous statement light

in a room can change a space entirely. Try

adding some emerald bling to a dining

room chandelier and you have not only

instant wow factor, but a great

conversation piece at your next dinner

party.

4. Fresh greens. I say this all the time.

Bring the outside in by shopping in your

own backyard. Even in the winter, your

yard is loaded with fresh pines and holly,

and both happen to be emerald green.

5. Wallpaper. It can be a little more

permanent than paint, so go easy on the

saturation and pattern. Look for

something classic and beautiful that won't

make you green with regret.

Seven Ways to Decorate with Wallpaper

It's been said that wallpaper is the single

most impactful way to transform a room.

The Wallcoverings Association shares

seven compelling reasons to consider your

own design transformation:

1. Blue Notes

Aware that blue pairs well with just about

any color, wallpaper designers now view

blue as the new neutral. Playing with the

full spectrum, designers are taking blues a

bit richer and deeper, yet diverting the

moody blues with shimmery metallic

accents and the nuanced depth so

emblematic of the color blue.

2. Plush Florals

This floral design's impact stems from its

nod to modernity while staying rooted in

classic floral forms. From afar this field of

blooms appears simple in nature but upon

closer inspection its artistry radiates,

thanks to a proprietary process marrying

century-old surface press printing with

artisan handwork.

The 2013 Color of the Year is emerald

green, says the Pantone Color Institute,

the arbiter of fashionable hues. It’s an

elegant, retro pick, a color that is

associated with harmony and good

fortune.

“Green is the most abundant hue in

nature — the human eye sees more green

than any other color in the spectrum,”

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the

Pantone Color Institute, says in a

statement. “It’s also the color of growth,

renewal and prosperity — no other color

conveys regeneration more than green. For

centuries, many countries have chosen

green to represent healing and unity.”

Emerald also makes a vibrant color

companion to Tangerine Tango, the perky

orange that is 2012s top color, as shown in

trendy designs by Chella Textiles, Pearson

Furniture & Fabrics, York Wallcoverings

and other producers.

Already, we are seeing green gowns on the

red carpet, sported by Angelina Jolie and

Catherine Zeta-Jones. JCPenney rolls out

emerald towels and bedding in February.

And Sephora also will show makeup in the

new hue.

Expect to see green ties before St. Patrick’s

Day, along with emerald polos and

pullovers for guys. For the fashion-forward

guy, leave a green sweater under the tree.

Still, not everyone is climbing aboard the

Green Machine. Sherwin-Williams has

named Aloe, a soft blue with a 1950s vibe,

as its 2013 pick. And Benjamin Moore is

serving up Lemon Sorbet.
