Day of Pink: February 28th, 2018 2018 focus: Cyber bullying Our children are growing up in a digital world. At Shaw our hope is to instill in our children a strong sense of digital citizenship. On Day of Pink we encourage our children to wear a pink shirt to stand up against cyber bullying. Together we will say no to online bullying whether it takes the shape of harassment, spreading rumors or sharing hurtful information or words that cause hurt or harm. As we wear our pink shirts we will be reminded to use the internet and social media respectfully and responsibly. Together we believe we can reduce cyber bullying.

Offence Declaration required for returning volunteers

Parents play an important role in the development and education of their children and in the success of the school community. At (insert name of school), we welcome and encourage the participation of parents and community members, and are grateful for the countless hours our volunteers contribute throughout the school year. To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check. A criminal record check is required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want to accompany your child on a field trip, you need this record check. Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as being a school volunteer. All returning volunteers will receive an Offence Declaration form that must be filled out and returned to the board office each year. Completing the Offence Declaration will ensure that you can continue volunteering in the next school year. Expect to receive the form in mid-February.

Seeing ourselves as innovators……

area

Our instructional day begins at 9:10 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m.

If you are dropping your child off after 9:10 a.m. or picking them up before 3:30 p.m.

Shaw puts the spotlight on Black Heritage

In December 1995, the House of Commons officially recognized February as Black History Month, following a motion introduced by the first black Canadian woman elected to Parliament, the Honourable Jean Augustine. During Black History Month, students, staff and parents from across Peel will participate in a number of activities that promote the understanding of the many contributions made by black Canadians. Here is a list of events happening at Shaw:

Help your family stay warm this winter Peel Public Health recommends the following cold weather guidelines for preventing cold-weather injuries: 1. Reduce amount of time children (grade 8 and under) spend outdoors when the temperature is –20 degrees Celsi-us or colder, with or without the wind chill. 2. Keep children indoors when the temperature is -25 degrees Celsius or colder, with or without wind chill. Some medical conditions may increase sensitivity to cold. Parents should consult their physician (Source: Environment Canada). 3. Allow indoor breaks if children say they are feeling cold or during extreme temperatures. 4. Ensure children are dressed warmly, covering exposed skin: insulated boots, winter weight coats, mittens, hats, neck warmers. 5. Change wet clothing or footwear immediately. 6. Although these conditions are unlikely to occur during the school day, ensure that all staff are able to recognize and treat symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia. Given plenty of warm fluids to prevent dehydration. 7. When children are outside, be watchful for shivering or signs of numbness in faces, ears, hands or feet. Educate children in dealing with cold weather: drinking plenty of fluids, dressing warmly, and recognizing signs of cold injury. 8. Educate children in dealing with cold weather: drinking plenty of fluids, dressing warmly, and recognizing signs of cold injury.

Grade 8 Practice Interviews Grade 8 students have recently completed an online Resume and Cover Letter in MyBlueprint. This resume, is a baseline for our students to continue to modify, build upon and “tweak” for any job they would like to apply for throughout their school career. The next step in developing the resumes and cover letters, is to participate in a Practice Interview Process to be held at the school where your child will have the opportunity to apply for a “fictional” entry-level job, participate in an interview with one of Shaw staff members and receive feedback on their performance. Students will be required to dress in interview-appropriate clothing as though they were actually applying for an actual job. The students enjoy this “competition” each year where one “successful candidate” for each job is finally selected. Grade 8 students will soon be preparing and training for this opportunity. Please support your child in this exciting opportunity!

Beyond the Hurt

Together, we make Shaw a safe and supportive school. That was one of the messages shared with Shaw students by our Red Cross Beyond the Hurt Youth Facilitators at a school assembly on January 26th. The audience was definitely engaged as our youth facilitators defined bullying as unwanted and hurtful repeated behaviour. It could be online. It could be face-to-face.

The youth facilitators also described the effects on the person demonstrating the bullying behaviour, the victim and the bystanders. The person demonstrating the bullying behaviour might be feeling lonely or angry, and that person might be having a hard time at school and at home too. The victim might be sad or afraid, and that person might have problems with schoolwork and friendships. The bystanders, those who witness the bullying behaviour, might be worried. They could worry so much that they might not be able to sleep restfully or focus on their schoolwork.

In addition, the youth facilitators made some suggestions to stop bullying. One was to tell the person demonstrating the bullying behaviour to stop. Another was to tell a trusted adult about the problem. If no one helped, keep telling until someone helps. Most importantly, people should be kind to one another. If people feel good about themselves, maybe there would be no bullying.

Following this, the youth facilitators shared situations with their peers and asked them to judge if they were examples of bullying behaviour or not. Their final message was... Everyone has the power to help others.

This Month in Shaw Athletics ... The months of December of December and January were busy ones for the Shaw gym. In December, the Shaw Badminton coaches, Ms. Ganong and Mrs. Carson, completed the process of choosing the Badminton Team from the members of the Badminton Club. Shaw's badminton team definitely showed up on the courts on Tuesday, January 23rd as they challenged neighbouring RJ Lee in an exhibition tournament. While RJ Lee squeezed by Shaw in points, both teams had many impressive rallies adding excitement to each match. Participating in this exhibition was great preparation for their division tournament on January

30th. The Shaw Handball team also got practices underway beginning in December, with many members learning a new game. This non-competitive Co-ed team continued practice into January, under coaches Ms. Cosgrave and Mrs. Ganesaratnam, in preparation for their divisional tournament held on the 18th at Fairlawn Public School. The Shaw Handball Hawks represented our school well showing great sportsman-ship. Well done Handball Hawks! The Shaw gym continues to buzz with basketballs aplenty. The Senior Boys and Basketball teams were selected in December by coaches Mr. Partynski (boys) and Mrs. Simpson-Berry and Mrs. Tomlin (girls) and they began practice in January. Both senior teams travelled January 31st to Sandalwood Heights Secondary School for a Family of Schools exhibition tournament. The Shaw Senior Boys began their day with a dominating performance winning 4 games and losing none, finishing in first place after the round

robin. The Shaw Hawks went on to face Treeline PS in the playoffs and after some hard luck wound up on the losing end finishing the day in 4th place after playoffs. The Shaw Senior Boys are to be commended for their efforts. The Shaw Senior Girls finished their round robin in 4th place and went on to face the first place team in the playoffs and grinded out a victory in a close contest. The Shaw Senior Lady Hawks then moved on to the finals and captured 2nd place overall. Congratulations, Shaw Senior Girls Basketball team. Both teams now shift their focus to practice and future exhibition games

in preparation for their upcoming divisional tournaments.

After a three year hiatus, Shaw has brought back junior sports beginning this year with the reintroduction of junior girls and boys basketball teams. The junior girls were selected in January by coaches Mrs. Parmar-Goorah and Mrs. Rai and the junior boys by coaches Mr. Partynski and Mr. Bhadra. The junior boys had a quick turnaround from selection to their first exhibition game as the Mountain Ash Mustangs sought some exhibition game experience prior to their tournament. The Shaw Junior Boys Basketball team competed hard against an experienced squad and wound up on the short end of the scoreboard while learning valuable lessons that they will now use in practise in preparation for future exhibition matches and their divisional tournament in March.

In addition to Athletics, Shaw’s intramural program continues to draw many students to the gym to gain some extra active time. The grade 1/2 Pinball intramural concluded at the end of January with the students laughing and energetic every Monday. The grade 3’s finished the Quidditch intramural and have now moved on to Ultimate Chicken. The grade 4/5 intramural floor hockey championship went to the Sharks this year in a close final match. They now look to take on the Shaw Staff All-Stars in their final test. The grade 6’s have been introduced to their next intramural, Speedball and now await their first scheduled match (to begin at the publication of this newsletter). Finally, the grade 7’s and 8’s can’t get enough Flickerball. At the time of publication, the Raptors sit atop the standings with just a few games left to play for the rest of the teams. Healthy Body! Healthy Mind! When we invest in our physical health, will be able to combat stress and anxiety with greater success. This includes being:

Well-rested

Well-nourished

Well-exercised

Some Tips: Set a Sleep Schedule – Set an alarm to go to bed! Our body likes a regular schedule. Bedtimes and wake times should not vary by more than one hour from one day to the next. Drink plenty of water - Many of us go through life dehydrated—causing tiredness, low energy, and headaches. It’s common to mistake thirst for hunger, so staying well hydrated will also help us make healthier food choices. More steps – Step side to side. Start by doing it 10 times per foot. Do this while watching TV, working on your computer or brushing your teeth. Do it with your children to make it fun. Walk to school!
