Friday evening: Grade 6 Production, and
then there’s only a fortnight left and it’s the end of term three! Who ever said that Term Three was the ‘slow’
term?
I would like to express a huge ‘thank you’ to our staff who are prepared to spend time outside of school hours to
provide our students so many extracurricular experiences. It can only happen with their commitment and
enthusiasm.
GRADE 4 CAMP Although our grade 4 students left for the Mt Evelyn Camp on Monday under wet and
grey skies the weather soon cleared up to perfect conditions. I had the pleasure of visiting
our grade 4 students yesterday and their smiling faces and happy stories informed me that
they are making the most of the wonderful activities provided. We look forward to their
safe return today.
EDUCATION CONFERENCE
I will be attending a two day conference on Thursday 27th and Friday 28
th August in Melbourne. The focus of the
conference is, ‘Leading Learning Together’….identifying what works!’ Speakers include Hon. Martin Dixon,
Minister of Education, Professor Charles Ungerleider, Professor of Sociology of Education, Simon Breakspear,
Educational Innovator and Global Researcher, Dr Pak Tee Ng, Head of Policy and Leadership Studies, Nanyang
Technical University, Dr Adam Fraser, Leading Educator and Richard Bolt, Secretary of Department of Education
and Early Childhood Education. I will certainly share with you some of the outcomes of this conference.
GROWTH COACHING
I have been offered the opportunity to participate in a Growth Coaching program held by the department at the
Bastow Institute in North Melbourne commencing Thursday 4th and Friday 5
th September. This program will
enhance the skills required to coach new principals. I welcome this opportunity as it should also benefit our own
staff as I train up individuals to support each other with positive coaching to complement their own professional
development.
ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
Currently the role of Assistant Principal has been advertised; we hope to announce the successful applicant by the
end of Term Three so that we can commence Term Four with a substantive Assistant Principal.
LOTE – JAPANESE
Ms Janine Sutton will continue teaching LOTE for the remainder of the year to ensure that our
students have consistency in Japanese and that she is able to provide the students a progressive result
on their December reports. She will also support our Japanese intern program which commences next
term.
FOOTY WALKATHON
Just a reminder that sponsor sheets will be handed out on Monday 1st September so that the
children can start collecting sponsors. A special lunch will also be available including foods that
complement the spirit of the day. Badges representing footy of all varieties eg. Soccer, AFL, Rugby and local
teams will be available to purchase at $2.00; orders will be collected prior to the walkathon so that students can
wear them on the day, Friday 12th September. This event is always a lot of fun with students and staff walking
around the school to the songs of footy teams. Those students who don’t follow a team may dress in gear that
represents the sports or teams they favour.
OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS CARE – CAMP AUSTRALIA
We welcome Jade Cadzow as the new Before and After School Care Coordinator. Jade has
experience working in long day care prior to joining Camp Australia. She has taken on the
challenges of coordinating the service at HEPS and is enjoying the experience. She speaks
highly of our students and is already putting her own personal touch to the program.
CONGRATULATIONS PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS Thank you to the Deakin pre-service teachers who have been working with our teachers and students over the last
fortnight: Sarah Mitchell with Natalie Blenheim and Lauren Cameron with Melissa Frigo; they finish with us on
Friday. Our two RMIT pre-service teachers, Cameron Shaw with Megan Urban and Lauren Creed with Laura
Barker continue with us for another three weeks.
We welcome three 1st Year students from Deakin on Monday for a 5 day observation round. Thank you to our staff
who so readily mentor these students, supporting these newbies as they become the future of education!
END OF TERM
The end of term is Friday 19th September and the children will be dismissed at 2.30pm to commence their fortnight
break. Please check out the Lost Property; there’s enough clothing there for us to start our own shop. It would be
good if items of clothing could be re owned, washed and ready for wear in term four.
Kind regards,
Kitty Allard.
Principal.

Everyone who has registered for the Challenge should now be putting their books onto their online record. Keep reading and entering your books on the PRC website. You only have until WEDNESDAY 10th of September to put your books onto the system.
Our students have so far read nearly 5,000 books! What a fabulous effort! Don’t forget to get your username and password from your teacher, and to mark your books as “finished” when you have put them onto your page on the website. Our aim is to have all students who registered for the Challenge, complete the Challenge. Let’s all AIM HIGH and complete the Challenge. Congratulations to Prep B who have all completed the Challenge! Well done! HEPS WRITE YOUR OWN BOOK COMPETITION Don’t forget we still have our annual Write Your Own Book competition. This year our story will be called “My Magical Adventure.” All students are invited to participate. Books must be picture story books including pictures and text and be no more than 10 pages long. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of each grade level. Entries must include your name, grade and year level. All entries must be submitted to Mrs Austin in the Library no later than Monday 15 September. I look forward to being overwhelmed with entries in this exciting competition. LITERACY/NUMERACY DAY We are very excited because on Thursday the 4th of September it is Literacy/Numeracy day and we will be celebrating by having a whole school activity day and a guest speaker. Our guest speaker for the day will be Terry Denton, the popular children’s author and illustrator. If you haven’t already paid the $5.00 to cover costs for the day in your Term 3 fees, please see the office as soon as possible. A big thank you too, to all those parents who have offered their help on the day. Notes have already gone home to let you know what grade you will be assisting. Sue Austin Library
LIBRARY NEWS
“Better than I used to be” In a world where there is often enormous pressure to “succeed” at so many levels; in the workforce, in our personal relationships and in our place in our community, I thought I would share with you another section of Tim Costello’s book, “Hope”. (Tim is currently the CEO of World Vision Australia). He writes, “…..when I first heard the Blind Boys of Alabama perform live in Melbourne, the song that touched me was called, ”I’m getting better all the time.” There is a line in the chorus: “I am not what I oughta be, but I am better than I used to be.” Why did it move me? Maybe it was because I have been born into a family tradition with a strong streak of perfectionism…..Truthfully to be this way is crippling because the bar is way too high. I have learnt that expectations in life are important because if they are too low we do not strive to do better. It they are too high, we feel crushed and give up. Managing expectations appropriately seem to be the great trick in getting life right. To hear The Blind Boys catch in one musical refrain both a realistic and for me a perfect pitch of expectations was wonderful. It acknowledges the need to keep trying but also to accept failures. This was soul soothing………..so I can go on knowing I am certainly not what I ought to be, but still I am better than I used to be. And that is enough for the moment. Libby Chaplain

EXCITING NEWS FOR HEPS : JAPANESE INTERN!!!!!! We are excited to announce that HEPS has secured the services of a Japanese Intern to assist our LOTE program from October 2014 to April 2015. An Intern is an invaluable resource as they can bring language learning alive for students. Children can relate to a native Japanese speaker, learn about current Japanese lifestyle and culture and, of course, practise their language skills in an authentic situation. Introducing Ms Nami Naoshima Nami joined the International Internship Program because she wants to learn more about overseas education systems and share different ideas about culture and education through this exchange. She has been working as a school nurse at Chisetsu Public Elementary School, Ota, Tokyo for seven years. She wants to present information about modern Japanese lifestyles, schools and student life as well as sharing many aspects of traditional Japanese culture such as calligraphy, cuisine, origami and games. Nami majored in sports science at university and especially enjoys tennis, badminton and volleyball. Host families required We need host families for Nami during her stay at HEPS. She will need her own bedroom and whilst she is independent and may wish to make her own arrangements for visiting friends and travel at times, it is expected that she will participate in family activities with her hosts. A small fee is paid to host families to cover some costs associated with hosting. The usual hosting period is one month but this is negotiable. If your family is interested in hosting Nami, further information about this wonderful opportunity for your family is available. Please complete the following reply slip and return it to the office. ………………………………………………………………………………………… Yes! My family is interested in hosting a Japanese Intern and we would like further information. Family contact name and phone number……………….................................................
