Feeder School Visit to Richview - Tuesday May 7th we welcomed over 300 grade 8s into the build ing for the afternoon to begin the transition to grade 9 for September 2019. This was an opportunity for our grade 8s to come see the school in action, tour the school and find out about our extra-curricular activities, clubs and teams at Richview. The students also had an opportunity to experience how to make their way to school before September as they travelled on their own or with their current teacher. The transition for the grade 8s into a new school can be an adjustment and often stressful. This event assists in becoming more familiar with their new school family. Our own Richview students were also excited to welcome the incoming grade 9s and helped out at the event as tour guide leaders, greeters and presenters. A true Saints effort by all!

Our grade 9 science students experienced space with the Digital Star Lab

This week our Grade 9 science students had an opportunity to "travel" to space and observe several astronomical phenomena with help from the Steve Lang and The Canadian Space Resource Center (based at Marc Garneau C.I.). Steve brought along the Digital Star Lab - a large inflatable dome containing a 360 degree projection screen to create an immersive learning experience. Among other things, students learned about black holes, the composition of stars, and galaxies, and explored our place in the vast universe. A special thanks to the arts department and the Creative Minds Assembly Team for being flexible with auditorium scheduling.

Business Leadership Fundraising Event for The Etobicoke Children’s Centre

Mr. Landriault’s Grade 12 Business Leadership class organized a fundraising event on Thursday, May 2nd in association with Mental Health Awareness Week at Richview CI. Students designed and promoted a variety of concessions during the lunch hour in an effort to raise money for The Etobicoke Children’s Centre. Students sold various items such as soft drinks, coffee, cotton candy, brownies and candy to name a few. The event was a tremendous success with students raising $423.00. The project provided students an opportunity to apply their knowledge within the major study areas of Business Leadership including Planning, Organizing, Leading and Team Building. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the cause, as well as the hard work and dedication of our Grade 12 Business Leadership students.

On Friday May 3rd, Mr. Ragno’s grade 11/12 Photography and Yearbook students took a field trip to OCAD University’s Annual Graduate Exhibition. The students were treated to artworks from more than 800 promising young artists and designers. The exhibition spread across several buildings on

campus including the iconic Sharp Centre for Design. A creative educational experience was had by all.

As part of their summative tasks exploring a variety of texts, the Grade 12 College English class got the

chance to see Avengers: Endgame on Thursday. We will be using critical media literacy skills to

analyze the blockbuster-style end to the series. Here is some of the initial feedback from the students, who

were trying not to spoil it for others: "There was a mix of pace - some climactic moments and some slower moments.""It had great visual effects.""It was a long time to sit, but it was interesting." "It brought all the

Marvel Universe characters together - the most ambitious cross-over in the history of the franchise."

Students in the Mental Health Awareness club at Richview organized a series of activities for the whole school to participate in, to encourage students to learn, talk, reflect, and engage with others on issues relating to mental health.

Students shared facts about mental health, organized a green ribbon awareness campaign, and hosted a

snack giveaway with a coping strategies locker magnet. The Mental Health Awareness club also

organized two lunchtime meditation sessions lead by a Buddhist Monk and hand wrote notes of

encouragement which they stuck to every locker in the school. Further, these students held a bake sale

fundraiser for the Etobicoke Children's Center, organized a green shirt day, created a beautiful "I WANT

TO BE" school community wall to display in the school, and did a Green Tea and kindness chocolate

    giveaway.

Creative Mind Festival - students in media courses, graphic design, photography and the Mental Health

Awareness club came together to showcase how the arts can support mental health and wellness. This

school wide assembly showcased student work and highlighted raw talent in the form of music, spoken

word, dance, film, photography and graphic design.

On Monday, May 6 and Tuesday May 7 Richview hosted our annual Alumni Event. At this event, we were lucky to have 15 university and college grads come back to speak to all of our current grade 12

students. These grads shared their honest experiences and valuable advice on how to survive your first

year at university or college. We wish our alumni and current grade 12’s all the best in their future endeavours.

Athletics: The girls’ soccer team played their best game of the year yesterday beating Humberside by a score of 2-0. Ella O. scored 10 minutes into the game and was all over the field. Rachael M. scored in the second half

to give the Saints some breathing room while our goalie Sarah A. and our defense played incredibly well.

Another day they beat ESA by a score of 2-0. Emma D. played well pressuring the defence all game and

scored both goals. While our defence was again phenomenal and working with the goalie the team was able

to achieve a shut out! Way to go Saints!!!!

The girls’ slo pitch team played their 3rd and 4th games yesterday and continued to prove solid offence and consistent defense wins. The girls beat rival Martingrove by a score of 14-3 and continued to roll against NACI by beating them 8-2. Way to go Saints!

The Richview track and field team participated in the Nike-sponsored John Redmond Track Classic. 57 schools and over 2000 athletes participated in the meet, which makes it one of the largest track meets in Ontario. Your Richview Saints placed 6th as a team – ahead of track powerhouses like Birchmount and St. Michael’s College! So many of our athletes performed incredibly well, so in the interest of time here are your Richview top-3 finishers:

Jordan G. 1st - senior boys’ shot put, 2nd - senior boys’ discus Hayley M. 1st - senior girls’ long jump* setting a meet record, 3rd - senior girls’ 100m Arya M. 1st - midget boys’ discus, 3rd - midget boys shot put Alia O. 3rd - senior girls’ javelin Kayla S. 1st - midget girls’ 800m Naveen S. 3rd - senior boys’ 2000m steeplechase And the standout result of the day: Ashtin-Rae C. – 1st in the senior girls’ javelin!

There were also MANY other top 10 finishers. Congratulations to the team, and best of luck for the regional championships on May 21st and 22nd.

Richview tennis team continues to be ‘a thing’ as the Saints dominated the West Regional Championships sending 7 people to next week’s cities. The day started with Aiden S. winning a gold medal in open boys’ singles, making it look easy against 3 other ranked players. Next was an impressive silver medal from Ryan P. and Thomas D. who defeated a very strong team from Silverthorn in a tie break to ensure their place in the cities. Only a prior work obligation kept them from winning gold. Following that, Noah W. also won silver, twice defeating the defending boys’ singles champion from last year to earn his place at cities. The most exciting events came last as Evelyn W. and Elizabeth J. defeated a team from Martingrove in 2 tie breaks to avenge 2 previous defeats earlier in the week and secure a number one seed at the cities. Finally, Margaret P. went undefeated on the day and rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the championship match to win the final by a score of 9-7. Amazing work! Good luck next week.
