Kinder 2015 Interviews

Next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday Kindergarten teachers are available to interview parents and students enrolling in 2015. If you know of anyone intending to enrol their child, who hasn’t done so yet could you please let them know about the interviews. Appointment times are essential. The school will contact parents prior to their appointment to remind them of the time. If you haven’t yet visited the school, please take the opportunity during this week of interviews so parents and students don’t miss out on all the wonderful opportunities we provide around orientation time. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact the school. Mrs Makinson

Up-date of Enrolment Information If families have changed their address or phone number, or have changed their emergency contact details, please let the office know. I’m sure parents understand that for the safety of your child we need current information. School funding is based on the education and employment status of the school parents. We realise that this may be viewed as sensitive information by families, but it can make the difference to the amount of funds the school receives each year. So if your employment situation has changed we’d appreciate being let know and will treat it with the utmost confidentiality. Thank you for your help with the above matters.

Silkworms It is that time of year when the mulberry trees are getting their leaves and the silkworms are hatching out for the year. The silkworms only hatch once a year in the springtime, so if you had silkworms in 2013 and carefully put your eggs away, now is the time to pick some mulberry leaves and feed your silkworms. More about silkworms next week.

Here are some things you can try at home with your children to help them learn this essential skill! The best place to learn spelling is in writing. Encourage writing often. Your child can learn to spell some words by sounding out each letter.

Short, simple words are best to learn in the beginning. Encourage your child to write stories and to spell words using the sounds the letters make.

Make a puzzle word by writing a word on paper and cutting the letters apart. Magnetic and felt letters can also be used for this activity. Mix the letters and have your children spell the word by putting the letters in order.

Say a word and have your children repeat the word. Then have them write the letters that match the sounds in the word. Some words need practice and cannot be sounded out and need to be learnt.

Find the spelling words in other places such as story books. Help your child know when the word “looks right”.

Write the words in many places eg on paper, in a story or letter or note, in sand, on a frosted window etc. Transfer the knowledge to many settings.

Help your child write the spelling words on a separate piece of paper in alphabetical order.

Have your children draw pictures for each of the spelling words. Have them write the word below the picture.

Take all the pictures and create a spelling reference book over the course of the year.

Create a word search with your child’s spelling words. You can do this by making a grid of 10 squares by 10 squares, writing the spelling words in the grid, then filling up the other squares with random letters. Keep a list of your children’s spelling words nearby for them to reference while doing the word search.

Together, think of ways to remember the words. For example, You HEAR with your EAR; He will be a FRIEND until the END; The ELEPHANT ate an ANT, that is why he has an ANT in him. These types of memorization tricks are called mnemonics.

Have your children write a story using as many of their spelling words as possible. Have them illustrate their stories.

Make a concentration game out of the spelling words and play this game with your children. Turn it into a game of snap.

Together, use Scrabble tiles to spell the words. Mrs Makinson
