Redevelopment Update
Last Wednesday, we had the official opening of our ten million dollar upgrade. It was a fabulous
morning when we had the chance to reflect and celebrate our new facilities. The Minister for Education
and Training, Mr Jeremy Rockliff, officially opened the redevelopment with two of our past students,
Eden Spinks and Edward Lancaster. Edward and Eden are now studying at Don College in Year 11;
however, their input was instrumental in the current design.
Below is a short extract from my speech:
Back in 2013, the School Association was unwavering and made it their number one priority to make sure every
sitting member of Braydon and Lyons visited our school and was aware of our learning environment. We also
spent considerable time developing our first Master Plan, giving everyone an insight into the vision we had for a
possible infrastructure upgrade. From there, with the help of Facility Services, we had unanimous support from
our sitting members, the Department of Education and our school community. I would like to thank everyone who made the Tasmanian community, especially during budget deliberations, aware of the need to redevelop
Latrobe High School.
In May 2015, I received a wonderful phone call from the Minister for Education and Training, Mr Jeremy
Rockliff, with the news that Latrobe High School had been allocated ten million dollars, as part of the wonderful
‘Reinvigorating Tasmanian High Schools Initiative’ by the Liberal Government. The work began quickly, with a
project team being set up to begin the selection process for the architectural firm, with the successful company
being ARTAS. Working with Peter Heathcote from Facility Services and Heath Clayton and his team from
ARTAS was fantastic, as they were able to challenge our thinking and open our minds to different possibilities.
Heath understands education and is passionate about creating stimulating environments for students to learn in,
as well as social spaces for students to connect in. Right from the start of the process, we had student
representatives on the project team. Edward Lancaster and Eden Spinks were crucial in making sure that a
student’s perspective was also heard. They can be extremely proud that they had a major impact on our new
facilities and I thank them for their energy, time and input. Eden and Edward, thank you for attending our
opening during your busy exam week.
In May 2016, we received news that the tender was won by VOS construction and we started the positive
working relationship with Gavin Woodcock (Site Manager) and Steven Hardy (Project Manager). From the start
of the job until the end, they have done everything possible to make sure the building works progressed with
minimal disruption to the learning program for students. Their professionalism, openness and ability to put our
needs first were exceptional. We can’t thank you enough.

I wouldn’t be telling the truth if I said it was a breeze and the last 18 months hadn’t been a challenge.
However, the hard work, late nights, moving equipment, teaching with limited resources, and teaching in small
spaces are coming to an end. At times, we have asked everyone to complete work outside of their job
description and when we needed to get the job done, we worked together and supported each other. Who
could forget the largest garage sale that the Latrobe Community has ever seen. Thank you everyone for the
support and extra work you have done. To all our students, your patience, flexibility and maturity throughout
the last 18 months have been commendable. How many times have we asked you to move lockers, walk a
different path and change into different rooms?
I think we can all agree the hard times have definitely been worth it and we are now reaping the wonderful
benefits. To the State Liberal Party, Vos, Artas, Facility Services, all the contractors, Latrobe High staff, students,
and our extended community, on behalf of the school and the School Association, I once again, would like to
thank you for your involvement in our wonderful redevelopment.
Our New Facilities - A Student Perspective Two of our Student Leaders, Kassidy Baldock and Sam Brown, presented a speech on how they view our new facilities. They did a wonderful job!
Since the redevelopment of our school, we have noticed that there have been many changes, not only with the school itself, but with students’ attitude towards learning. After more classrooms were built, we now have dedicated areas for each subject, and the appropriate equipment stays in the one room, encouraging more consistent, smooth-flowing lessons. Now that all grades are separated into different areas around the school and more pathways have been built, it has stopped the extreme congestion problem we faced for three years at high school. The modernised buildings give the school a fresher feel, therefore making people feel secure. Most of the personal interest departments have been updated to benefit our learning, such as our updated drama, music, cooking, gym, cafeteria, canteen and outdoor courts area. Having such excellent resources and brand new areas to learn in is great motivation to learn and grow. Some of the positive impacts have been:
New tennis courts and basketball courts giving students a greater range of active spaces to play sport inside and outside of class
Having change rooms, a foyer, a stage and tiered seating attached to the gym has allowed us to come together as a school more frequently and has stopped us from having to run in the rain to our old change rooms and visit the Memorial Hall for Assemblies.
The drama area now has a stage, many break out areas, and awesome seating and allows us to perform and show our talents in a stimulating environment.
There is a strong connection between music and drama and we now have great practice rooms and the ability to record our own music. The idea of an outdoor stage has been great and will be used for lunch time performances.
Our food technology area feels like you are on MKR, and the best part is, we get to work alongside our canteen and supply food, catering, barista and assistance with serving. The Café’, well it is SOOOO good and yes, FOXTEL is a bonus.
Our art room is more vibrant and having access to technology close by, as well as a larger space to work in, has given us more opportunities.
We are excited about the High Performance Lab and the equipment is nearly ready for use. We can’t wait to use the rowing machines, running machines, kayak ergos, and spin bikes.

PRINCIPAL
Overall, we really like the different social spaces that cater for individual students. We are looking forward to
looking at purchasing new furniture in some of these areas. It is an exciting time to learn at Latrobe High School.
Athletics Carnival
The attendance at our Athletic Carnival was high and most importantly, participation was excellent. The
Health and Physical Education staff did a wonderful job organising the two days, when all students had the
opportunity to participate in every event. Most pleasing was the feel of the carnival, with lots of positive
displays of sportsmanship and encouragement. At our next assembly, Tuesday 28 November, we will
announce the winning house, homeroom, grade and individual champions. The assembly starts at 1:50pm
and parents, carers and family members are most welcome to attend. This assembly is also when we
announce the 2018 Student Leaders and School Association Representatives. A full Athletics Report will
follow in the next newsletter.

GRADE 7 COORDINATOR
How fantastic was it to see our school be officially recognised as ‘open’ by the Honourable Mr. Jeremy
Rockliff. Students were treated to an array of performances, PowerPoint presentations and speeches in
how much Latrobe High School has transformed over the past 18 months and this year’s Grade 7’s are
reaping the rewards!
Parents and friends had the opportunity to see our fantastic facilities on 10 November during our
redevelopment celebration and School Fair. Thank you to those Grade 7’s who helped their home rooms
and assisted in the school tours to showcase our school!
Well done to all Grade 7’s who participated in the school Athletics Carnival over the past two days! A
special well done to the following who ran the school 1500m on 8 November: Will Sanderson, Cooper
Armitstead, Roman Jopson, Jack Darby, Aidyn Bryan, Kaleb Sims, Mable Freestone, Tara Steers, Keisha
Williams, Jorja Masters and Abby Brown. The following students signed up for the walk at lunch time and
earned valuable points for their house: Jimmy Belcher, Isaac Richards, Brayden Keep, Bradley Magee,
Dove Smith, Lauren Kent, Rose McWilliam and Kelly McClymont.
With only four weeks remaining, it is important that all students continue to strive for excellence and
work towards setting great study habits to set them up for 2018. This includes being organised for class, completing assessment tasks and working together to the best of our ability.
The students continue to learn in their last rotation on the Personal Interest taster line. Students have
now had the opportunity to see what Art, MDT, Drama, Music and Cooking have to offer which will
hopefully assist their PI selections for 2018.

POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS
Grade 7 girls from Cygnus working hard to maximise their points to get Cygnus all 4
victories this year in the carnival!
RESILIENCE It was great to see Mable show resilience during the school athletics carnival. Although
she didn’t break any records, she continued to run and backed up twice over the 400m!
She was successful in completing the event and scoring valuable points for her house!
LEARNING
Congratulations to Fabian for his fantastic efforts recently in his recent
acknowledgement for his NAPLAN results. Fabian was recognised by
the Minister for Education & Training, Mr Jeremy Rockliff, as pictured.
RESPECT It was great to see students shaking hands after their events at the Athletics Carnival
and respecting their opponents. Whilst friends pre-event, Ashlea and Jayde were fierce
rivals in the 400m but were friends again post-event!
GRADE 10 REPORT
Today in homeroom Grade 10 students will receive an envelope containing more important information
about the concluding school year. There will be information included about the last week of school;
detailing all activities. There will be information about Don College START day on Tuesday 5
December. Finally, for most students there will be their official invitation to the Grade 10 Dinner and
their acceptance form which needs to be returned at the soonest convenience. Please ensure that you
ask your child for this information so that you are fully aware of the important dates approaching and
the procedures for these days. If your child does not bring home an invitation to the dinner please ask
them to speak with Mr Oliver or alternatively contact Mr Oliver at the school on 64261061 or
Grade 10 Final Week Schedule Monday 18 December: Students will be travelling to Launceston for the day shopping. Leaving
school at 9:00am and returning by 3:00pm
Tuesday 19 December: Students will be travelling to Lake Barrington to participate in water sports.
Leaving school at 9:00am and returning by 3:00pm
Wednesday 20 December:
Students will be having ‘brunch’ at 10:00am in the Café. Students will be expected to contribute by
either bringing food/drink to share or by helping in food preparation for the brunch. Specific details will
be given at a later date.
Students are expected to attend school for the day and will assist with cleaning and organising duties. If
students have appointments throughout the day, it is expected that they sign in and out at the office. A
note from home detailing the students’ expected movements would be greatly appreciated.
Grade 10 Dinner:
The Grade 10 Dinner is held at the Axeman’s Hall of Fame, Bells Parade. Students should start arriving
from 5:15pm-6:00pm. Students will meet outside the Axeman’s (at the platypus) for an organised group
photo at 6:45pm, and entry into the Axeman’s will follow.
Photographs, please note: there will be no official photographer organised at the venue. If parents
wish to have professional photographs taken they will need to organise this themselves. Opportunities
for photos with family and friends will take place between 5:15pm – 6:30pm. It is recommended that
these photos are taken around the Bells Parade area.
Parents are asked to collect students at the end of the dinner at 10:00pm and provide safe transport
home.
Thursday 21 December, Home Room Farewells: Students attend in full school uniform. Grade
10’s are to go to home room at 8:45am. Homerooms have the opportunity to say goodbye to their
Grade 10 members during this time.
Grade 10 Farewell Assembly: This will be held in the Latrobe High School Gymnasium at
approximately 9:30am. Students must be in full school uniform and will be presented with their School
and Civic Certificates. Parents are invited to attend.
Splash Aquatics Centre (optional for Grade 10 students):
Grade 10 students are invited to attend the whole school celebration at Splash Aquatics Centre
immediately after the assembly. If Grade 10 students are not attending and are going home with parents
after the assembly, they are required to give a note to Mr Oliver so students’ attendance can be
amended and accurate.
Cost of Grade 10 Week is $110.00
REMINDER!
MELBOURNE EXPERIENCE 2018
If your son/daughter is wishing to go on the 2018 Melbourne Experience, the
permission form along with a deposit of $150 is due to the school office by Thursday 30
November 2017.
SCHOOL 1500M TRIALS:
On Wednesday November 8, 64 students took part in our annual 1500m trials at the Latrobe
Recreational Grounds. The top two students from this 1500m trials will be invited to compete in that
event at the North West Inter High carnival. More information and photos about the Athletics
Carnival will be in the next newsletter. Congratulations to Orion who are currently leading the
Athletics carnival after this 1500m. Results are as follows:

2018 PLANNING
Confirming 2018 student enrolments is an important part of school planning at this stage of Term 4,
2017. Parents are requested to please contact our school office as soon as possible if you intend to
enrol your child/children at a school other than Latrobe High School in 2018.
At this stage in the year it is extremely important for us to know of any students who will
not be attending this school in 2018.

can also help with referrals to optometrists, if required, who are
affiliated with the school spectacle scheme, and can help you to access
reduced cost or free glasses.

Parents who pay their 2018 levies in full prior to 15 December will receive a $20.00 discount.
2017 SCHOOL MAGAZINE: Students who have not paid for their 2017 school magazine can
pay $15.00 to the office to receive one.
STUDENT ASSISTANCE: parents who have received notification of their eligibility for 2018
STAS can collect their books from now until December 15.

POSITIONS VACANT
Have you considered nominating for the School Association as a parent or community
member?
The Association provides a great opportunity for parents and community members interested in taking
an active role as part of the ‘decision making body’ of the school. It also provides an opportunity to
learn the processes associated with department and school policies and budget formulation and
implementation.
Nominations close on Friday 24 November 2017 and a nomination form is attached or available
from the school office.
Uniform 2017
We have a strict uniform policy. It is
important that PLAIN BLACK shoes (NO COLOUR) are purchased as part of the uniform requirements.
The correct Latrobe High School uniform is available from the school office.
We appreciate parent support in ensuring that all students are in full school uniform. If you have any concerns, please contact your child’s Grade Coordinator. STUDENT ABSENCES

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL
Appointments
We understand some students may need to leave school during the day to attend appointments. If this is the case, it is
essential they follow the school protocols.
Sickness or Injury
If students need to be collected from school as a result of illness or injury, the office staff will contact parents. Students
should not be contacting parents through their own devices. Students still need to follow the school protocols and sign out
when leaving.
School Protocol
This system is in place to keep our records accurate and ensure the safety of all our students so please help us by following
our protocols.
¨ A note of permission should be provided from the parents if it is a pre-arranged appointment.
¨ Students need to sign out at the front office and sign in, if and when they return to school.
¨ Students must be collected from the front office, not met in the car park or on the road.
¨ The person who collects the student must also sign them out.
