TERM 3 ACTIVITIESThere were many events towards the end of last term that highlighted a variety of fun activities for our students, as indicated by the sample range of events below.

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR CELEBRATIONSWithout a doubt, the school’s 50th Year Celebration Day was a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Around 480 former staff and students returned to the high school on Saturday 10th September and to the evening Sundowner at the Esperance Bay Yacht Club, during which many happy reunions took place and many fond memories of the ‘old school days’ were recalled.

GIRLS FOOTBALL (by students Tari Drew and Megan Karger)On the 9th September our school competed in the girls football competition, which was held at the Esperance Ports oval. The other teams competing in the competition were John Paul College and the Esperance Anglican School.

Our fi rst game was against John Paul College (JPC), which the high school ended up losing by a nail biting one point. Our next game was against Esperance Anglican Community School (EACS), which was won by the high school. EACS and JPC played off in the preliminaries, which John Paul College won.

The grand fi nal was between JPC and ESHS, with JPC proving to be too good and taking out the fi nal honours.

We would like to thank everyone who made the carnival possible and thank you to the other two schools for such a fun day.

ALCOHOL AND YOUNG PEOPLE: Tips for parents of 12-17 year oldsGiven the end of schooling for many of our year 12 students and with year 11 students soon to follow, the attached article on Alcohol and Young People: Tips for parents is a timely reminder as to how parents/carers can support their children to remain safe and healthy regarding alcohol use.

Rules about adults supplying alcohol to children under 18 have recently become more strict. Some key points of these changes include:

IF A YOUNG PERSON WHO IS NOT YET 18 YEARS OF AGE BRINGS THEIR OWN ALCOHOL TO MY HOUSE, IS THIS AN OFFENCE UNDER THE NEW SECONDARY SUPPLY OF ALCOHOL LAW?

The new law centres around supplying alcohol to juveniles. Should a parent lodge a complaint with the police (irrespective of who supplied the alcohol), it will be a matter for them or the courts to determine the issue of supply.

Nevertheless, as a parent faced with this particular situation, you may wish to call the child’s parents to check the circumstances and make a record of it. Otherwise, it is preferable that you do not permit the juvenile to bring the alcohol onto your property.

MY 18 YEAR OLD SON IS HAVING SOME FRIENDS OVER TO OUR HOUSE FOR A FEW END OF EXAMS DRINKS WHILE WE ARE NOT AT HOME. SOME OF MY SON’S FRIENDS ARE NOT 18 YET. IS IT OKAY FOR HIM TO GIVE THEM ALCOHOL?

No, unless your son has been given permission by his friends’ parents or guardians. Without their consent, he is liable for a penalty of up to $10,000. The law now requires that if your son has permission to supply alcohol to his under 18 year old friends, in your home, he must observe responsible supervision practices at all times. This includes making sure his friends who are under 18 years of age don’t get drunk (or he does not get drunk himself) and that he is able to supervise their consumption of alcohol at all times.

THE ESPERANCE SHOWWell done also to the students who competed in the local show, winning many events and accolades.

Thank you to the staff who helped at the show: Mr Pollard, Mr Fitzpatrick, Ms McDonald, Mrs O’Connell, Mr Harris and Mrs Sharpe.

What can parents do?

Evidence tells us that what you do as a parent affects your child’s choices about alcohol.

Avoid providing alcohol to your children

Educate your child

Clarify your expectations

Talk with other parents

Drinking from an early age can lead to:

• Young people drinking more regularly and in greater quantities.

• Increased likelihood of alcohol-related problems later in life.

Children who are supplied alcohol by their parents for use without parental supervision are four times more likely to drink in a harmful way.

Inform them of the harms associated with drinking alcohol. These include:

Talk to your child about your expectations of them regarding alcohol use.

• If your expectation is no alcohol, explain why.

• Discuss how you expect them to behave in environments where alcohol is present.

• If they attend a social event be sure your child understands that theyneed to keep in touch with you about where they are, andremind them of your expectations about alcohol.

• Reach an agreement based upon your expectationsabout alcohol and what will happen if theagreement isn’t kept.

Talk to other parents and let them know that you do not want them to provide alcohol to your child under any circumstances.

Mini Merit Draws We have had a Mini Merit epidemic at Student Services recently. A large number of year 7 students have brought in their bundles of ten Mini Merits to exchange them for a reward. Congratulations to the following students for their commendable attempt to empty our reward box and for having their work ethic, behaviour and/or community spirit recognised by their teachers on ten separate occasions:  Indianna Tas, Tanika Williams, Adam Maccan, Rhal Selway, Grayden Scerri, Kaydence Puckey, Imogen Champion, Daemon Hawkins, Angus Bairstow, Jeromiah Walker, Alexander Carson, Ruby Clifton, Lauren Handley, Ada Smith, Kasey Graham, Felicity Jones, Jacob Johnson, Tanika Williams, Kyra Puckridge.  ‘Act‐Belong‐Commit’ Hip Hop Project Some of our very talented students recently took part in the ‘Act‐Belong‐Commit’ Hip Hop project that involved a number of agencies in town. The students planned, scripted, performed and filmed a hip hop act with professional artists from Melbourne. The video is fantastic, and has a powerful message. If you haven’t already come across it in social media, you can view the video at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfHuCtxiNoA&feature=youtu.be  A huge congratulations to the year 7 students who participated in this project!  School Uniform Our year 7 students are, at long last, beginning to unearth and shake out their summer school uniforms. We have finally had some weather worthy of tracky‐dack rejection. As these days become more of a certainty, and students begin donning shorts and t‐shirts with confidence that the clouds will remain at bay, please remember that our school dress code requires that shorts should be of a certain length. Students can check the length by standing up with their arms straight by their sides – their shorts should reach to the end of their middle fingers. This is to ensure the comfort and confidence of students so they can move and sit freely through their varied activities during the day.  School Library Display Last term in English, our year 7 students became consummate poets as they delved into the artistry of poetry and composed their own pieces. Some of their work is currently on display at the school library, and is worth taking a look at. The set‐up is fantastic, and includes a super cute poetry tree. A big thank you to the students whose work is on display, and to the ever‐creative library staff who put the display together.                       Ms Jodie Falconbridge Year 7 Coordinator

Bullying There are some concerns of bullying within the year 8 cohort. Mr Reading and I addressed this issue at the latest assembly. Any bullying will not be tolerated at Esperance Senior High School and students will be dealt with accordingly. Please remind your child to treat others how they would like to be treated.   If you have any questions or concerns about your child please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I can be contacted on: 90719555 or [email protected]   Regards Miss Lydia Redpath  Year 8 Coordinator

Dear Parents, Students and Teachers

Together with the warmer spring weather term 4 has arrived.  It is magnificent to see so many year 9s without fail

in school dress code.  Well done to those who are contributing to the school community so early in the term by

making school an enjoyable place.

Thank you to the students who are participating in lessons and doing their revision and homework regularly.

Remember that it is important to revise the new concepts that you have learned daily. This is excellent preparation

for later studies in life as it creates positive work habits, especially for senior schooling. It is never too late to

improve on subject areas as the staff are always willing to help.  A positive attitude towards school is the key to

educational success.

Well done to the year 9 girls who represented the school in the Girls Football Carnival against Esperance Anglican

Community School and John Paul College.  Unfortunately the Girls lost the final to John Paul College in a nail biting

finish.

Some camps and activities that the year 9s may be involved in this term include the Interschool Athletics Carnival,

Aquatics Camp and the rewards day at the end of the term.

Option selections for 2017 are in the process of being finalised. If you have not handed your Year 9 Option

Selection form in, please do so as soon as possible. Contact me if there are any concerns regarding this.
