April 2015 Principal’s Message This is our “mid-semester” measure of student progress at Vic High. I’m pleased to report that 38% of our students have earned honour roll recognition with close to 10% earning Principal’s honour roll (straight 5.0 GPA). That said some of the reports will have requests for meetings, or requests for confirmation of plans to complete graduation requirements. If you have any questions regarding the data on this report, don’t hesitate to email the teacher or one of the administration team for clarification. Look for course selection verification reports on the Grade 9-11 student reports. Any changes should be made as soon as possible; we are beginning the development of next year’s timetable and accurate information is helpful. As this point in the year we also begin to set teacher schedules, and unfortunately, there are some teachers that may not be returning in the next year due to expiration of their temporary contracts: Thanks go to: Chris Granger (Science), Ian Bush (English and Planning), Georgina Hope (Art, Family and Women’s Studies), Adrian Herlaar (Math and PE), David Moonlight (PE and Social studies), Greg Pitre (PE and History), Denis Wightman (Special Education), Deb Atchison (Social studies) and Matt Grinder (Math). Hopefully we’ll re-connect with these outstanding educators next year. Further to this, we will be without EAs Shannon Griffin and Yves Herbert next year (at this time). Again, if growth occurs in the Special Education cohort, we hope to secure these terrific EAs again. Staff Development: We’ve had two Professional development workshops in the last few weeks and the energy and commitment on the part of the full staff to continue to explore avenues to support, connect and encourage our learners to excel is amazing. Focus points for the staff include Collaboration teams looking into the new BC Education Plan, Community building within the school with a focus on the junior grades, Inquiry- Based learning and Project-based learning with a blend of Tech Ed and science/math classes. This upcoming year will be exciting for the community of Victoria High School. Stadium Update: Last week we had our final community update for the school year. Once again, it was a reminder of the strength and depth of the Alumni of Vic High. The architect firm of Low, Hammond and Rowe is providing ideas for the stadium committee to share with the community about the stadium impact on the Fernwood neighbourhood with respect to green space and potential community gathering spaces (Jackson Low is Class of ’79). We have had several exciting meetings with MLA Rob Fleming as we plan an event that we hope will be an annual celebration of Vic High, our community and local performance groups. June 12 is our celebration day at Vic High; typically we recognize our athletes and honour roll students, we have a celebration BBQ, hand out school yearbooks and we invite the Grads to the attic to leave a message to future grad classes. This year we hope to bring our students and the community closer to this project by having some performance and spirit events in the track on the 12 th , including inviting food trucks to the site, starting at 2 pm and finishing around 7 pm. Watch for future information on this event! Bike club, Boy’s and Girl’s Rugby, Badminton, Track and Field and Beach Volleyball are all in mid stride. It is a reminder to our families that there are a lot of activities to enjoy at our school, in an environment that is supportive and where all athletes can play. We’re celebrating our 8 th Breakfast of Champions on May 13 th . PAC funds help us recognize and celebrate 20 students nominated by the staff as being exceptional in Citizenship, Spirit, Dedication and overall positive Vic High Ambassadors. These are students that might not be recognized through the traditional conduits of GPA and athletics, but contribute in such positive measure to our community. A breakfast celebration invites the student, parents/family and the nominating teacher to a personal tribute. This is always a moving event and the support for staff and parents to continue this is much appreciated by our school based team. As always, please keep Thrifty Smile Cards in mind when you shop – the benefit to our school extracurricular program via the PAC cannot be stressed enough! I plan on loading up my card before the end of May to continue the benefits through June. Vic High

Attention Parents/Guardians of Current Grade 11 Students

If you are the parent/guardian of a student presently in grade 11, your son or daughter may have told you about a trip being offered at Spring Break 2016. The trip is being organized by student representatives of a company called “S-Trip.” While we are in no position to make a comment about this organization, we simply wanted to reiterate to any parents of any of the participants that neither the school nor the Greater Victoria School District has been involved with the planning, organization, insurance, or any subsequent liabilities. No Vic High staff members or District Employees will be attending or will be supervising any of the activities on this trip.

Grads Grads must provide their transcript information to any post-secondary institutions where they have applied to attend. They do this by completing a selections form online via the Ministry of Education Student Secure Web: https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/tsw/tsw/student/logon/. Students are at risk of their acceptance to a post-secondary school being withdrawn in July if they have not completed this form. Dinner/Dance tickets were on sale last week. We are looking forward to our May 29th evening at the Empress Hotel. VHS Recognition Ceremony tickets are available at the UVic Box Office.

VHS Dance Department 2015 Greater Victoria Dance Festival-School Section VHS Dance Department continues to support the annual GVPA Festival with 9 entries—all original choreography. Four of the 9 entries are Young Choreographers. Emilia and Maya choreographed a new work for our Beginner D Block class—“Rather Be”; Talia choreographed for the Intermediates C Block—Madonna's “Living for Love”; Sophia choreographed “Diamonds for the Advance dancers; and Amrit, returning to her ethnic roots, choreographed a Bollywood version of Romeo and Juliet-- “Ram—Leela.

Alumnus Mohammed Rashead, Brittany Inkster and Ross Wirtanen have once again returned to our Vic High dancers to create what can be documented as “stunning” and “fun” dances. Mrs. Krich, in tribute to a well-known and loved Ballet teacher-choreographer, Donna Ball-Watson, has revived a pas de cinq to Holberg's Suite. With special thanks to AIC (Artists in the Classroom) grant, under the umbrella of B.C. Arts Council—Mrs. Krich invited Kathy Lang to Vic High to work with all our dancers (Beginners, Intermediates and Advanced), to set a new aboriginal-thematic work on select dancers--“Raven's Flight”. For all family and friends not able to attend the GVPA Festival there is another showing of all new works at our Evening of Dance on May 20th in the VHS Auditorium. Central Middle School Enrichment—Street Dance Fusion As part of Vic High’s Give Back Program, dancers from the Advance class teach the Central students in a dance-workshop setting. Special thanks to Artstarts Program for their financial support in producing “Raven’s Flight”. French Immersion Update Our French Immersion students have been very busy since the start of semester two. Prior to Spring Break our grade 9 students held a francophone carnival that celebrated francophone cultures throughout the world.

They invited the grade 6 and 7 students from Central Middle school to join them on the day and it was an amazing way to connect with our French Immersion feeder school.

We were proud to host the district-wide Concours d’Art Oratoire French language speech competition on April 8th. Our French Immersion students helped organize and run the event and three of our grade 9 French Immersion students placed in the top three: Holly Peterson, Liam Clark and Ben Rotkowski. Ben will also be competing in the province-wide competition on May 2nd. Bonne chance! On Wednesday May 13th our grade 12 French Immersion students will be taking their provincial oral examinations. Students have been working tirelessly to prepare these oral conversations, bonne chance! Mark your calendars; on Thursday June 11th our grade 9 French Immersion students will be having the final “Night of the Notables” final examination. The students will be dressing up as a famous historical figure that we studied throughout the course of the year. This is a great way for students to share what they have been working on all year. The event starts at 7pm in the Roper Gym. Spring Break Travels During spring break I had the pleasure of travelling to Europe with 23 French immersion and Spanish students. We visited Spain, France and Italy in two weeks and had a number of different adventures along the way. We ate tapas and took in the royal palace in Spain. In France we visited the medieval city of Carcassonne and stayed along the Mediterranean in nice.

We had many adventures in our weeklong stay in Italy including shopping in Florence, visiting the coliseum and Vatican in Rome, visiting the ruins of Pompeii and, on our final day, taking a guided boat ride around the beautiful island Capri. We had an amazing journey and made some amazing new friendships!

Volleyball update On June 5/6th 16 students will be travelling to Parksville for a beach volleyball tournament. We are excited that we will have both boys and girls playing this year and working on developing their skills for volleyball season in the fall.

Track Update We have had 6 dedicated students participate in our track program this year. They will be having their last meet the final week of May and Kate Phillips, grade 10, and Frances Booth, grade 9, have qualified for the island championships the week after. Good Luck girls!

Athletics fundraiser Mark your calendars! On Wednesday June 10th from 6-9 we will be hosting an athletics fundraiser at the Fernwood Inn to support our growing athletic program. The Vic High R and B band will play and there will be food and drinks! Tickets are $25 and can be purchased from the main office. Hope to see you all there!

MEMO

To: K-12 Principals and Vice-Principals From: Pat Duncan Re: Use of Feature Films Date: February 24, 2015

This memo is a review of district guidelines and practices regarding the use of feature films in schools. Please ensure all teaching staff are aware of the information below.

1. Use of Feature Films The Board expects judgment and sensitivity be utilized when selecting feature films for student viewing. In particular, films which contain sexually suggestive, violent or vulgar content must be carefully previewed by the classroom teacher prior to student viewing. Parents who would like more information about which feature films their children may view in a particular class are encouraged to speak with the classroom teacher. On request from an individual parent, teachers will advise that parent of what films they expect to show and discuss any parental concerns. If the teacher later decides to use a different feature film that was not discussed with the parent, the parent will be advised in advance.

2. Feature Films Licensing

Our district has public performance rights (purchased through Audio Cine Films Inc. and Visual Education Centre Limited). These licenses cover almost all feature length films.

In December, March, and June, schools submit a record of the films shown to the above mentioned companies, both of which have tracking sheets posted online. Audio Cine Films: http://www.acf-film.com/documents/ACF_EN_Report.pdf Visual Education Centre Ltd: http://www.criterionpic.com/034/lcl_ppa.html
