ANNUAL HSC YOUTH MASS

YEAR 12 FAREWELL ASSEMBLY

The final assembly of the Year 12 cohort was held on Tuesday this week. It gave the opportunity for staff and students to reflect on their journey. Below is an extract of a speech given by 2016 Vice-Captains, Daniel Waddups and Isabella Duncan. 269 boys started alongside me on the 28

th of January

2011 and not one of us imagined just how fast the 2065 days would go, yet here we are, leaders of the school moving into the world as young men. The Class of 2016 is the biggest grade in Oakhill’s 80 year history and each and every one of us has something to be proud of. As a cohort not only have we completed countless biathlons, a dozen market days and 6 gala days, but we have also become pen pals with children in India, helped plant coconut trees 10,000 kms away and collected money for St Vincent De Paul. Throughout our duration here we have survived the torrential rain at Year 7 camp, spent a day at Wet n Wild and sung the school song numerous times with pride. We have done all this under the Core Lasallian Values which have been instilled in us since our very first day when we sat in our yard and Mr Elwood began our day by calling us young men with a role to fulfill. Since that day we have been brothers to each other. I now have brothers who will go on to do extraordinary things; politicians, scientists, humanitarians and a fair few tradies by the looks of things. On a personal note, I'd like to take a moment to thank the boys; for making sure I didn’t go a day at school without laughing; and to the girls who welcomed the College spirit and shared notes with me the night before.

Thank you to the teachers for influencing my choices, attitudes and perspectives. Oakhill is abundant with role models and for this we leave as Oakhill graduates and better people…...Daniel Oakhill is more than just a school it is a community and a family. Each day we walk up the drive we enter a place where the culture is prime and all people are respected. Year 12, it is this week that we finally say goodbye to our schooling lives and become Oakhill graduates. We are privileged to have been students of Oakhill College. As typical as it sounds, although we're all going our separate ways there will always be an Oakhill bond between us. It is almost impossible for our future selves to not be influenced by the friendships that have shaped us. We would like to thank our fellow graduates for the support you have shown to the College Student Leaders and for the significant contributions you have made to our College. To the staff who have supported us, throughout our journey…Thank You. The Class of 2016 leaves Oakhill College as proud graduates. The Gospel reading we heard earlier encourages us to take the Catholic and Lasallian values we have learnt and make a difference in the world that awaits us beyond. We wish all staff and students, the very best for the future and may Jesus continue to live in all our hearts….forever…..Isabella

VISUAL ARTS NEWS

Artist of the Month – August The Year 12 students have invested a great deal of time over the past few weeks in the lead up to the final submission of their HSC major works. However, it was the diligence, passion and commitment by Daniel Said, who worked tirelessly to produce an impressive, large scale collection of drawings for his Body of Work that has seen him being awarded Artist of Month for August. Congratulations Daniel on this achievement. Artist of the Month – September

Year 11 Visual Arts students have spent the past term developing their ideas, filming and editing for “The Artist and Their World” assessment task. A talented cohort, some wonderful short films were produced. A film about self-criticism and internal voices was a submission cleverly created by Jonathon Hartley. His work demonstrated conceptual strength and resolution and as result has earned him the title of Artist of the Month for September. Congratulations Jonathon.

Oakfest 2016

The annual Oakfest Film Competition drew much interest this year. Mercy was this year’s theme, taking inspiration from the Jubilee Year of Mercy in the Catholic Church. Students were required to integrate this theme into their own short film. With a broad range of entries from Year 9, through to Year 12 there was a variety of takes on the idea of theme. From an inspiring film about homelessness awareness to a fan fiction creation of The Flash, students created some amazing films that have left the Art Department debating for hours on who the winner should be. Congratulations to Joshua Urquhart of Year 10 for taking out the first prize. Luis Delfin and Nathan Attard won the People’s Choice Award and Jonathon Hartley received the Highly Commended prize. Thank you and

congratulations to all the students who made the effort to enter. Teachibald 2016 The annual Teachibald exhibition is held at the start of Term 3 to coincide with the renowned Archibald Prize. This experience allows students to make real world connections between their own artmaking and that of practicing artists. Students across the school were able to vote for their favourite in the People’s Choice Awards. The winner this year is Louis Purcell of Year 7 with his portrait of Ms Nusdorfer. Congratulations Louis.

HSC Visual Arts 2016 People’s Choice Winner During the HSC Visual Arts Showcase in August, audience members were able to vote for their favourite artwork in the People’s Choice Award. This year’s winner was Daniel Said with his work Disambiguation, a series of intricate graphite drawings. Highly Commended Awards went to Abbey Haberecht and Hayley Bertus. Congratulations to Daniel Said for being awarded the People’s Choice winner for 2016. Daniel received a prize pack compliments from S&S Wholesale, Creativity Unlimited.

LASALLIAN YOUTH MINISTERS

Dear Lasallians, Lasallian Mission Services is looking for creative and energetic youth ministers to join our team next year and help bring the Gospel adventure to life for students in our schools. The Lasallian Youth Ministers spend their time building relationships with students and staff, whether that be in the classroom or school yard, on retreats or immersion trips, one-on-one and in prayer with the whole community. Most Lasallian Youth Ministers serve part-time (1 or 2 days per week) while studying at university. It is a paid position and the Youth Ministers benefit from having a Young Lasallian staff member assigned to them as a mentor and supervisor who can monitor how they are progressing and share resources and news from around the District with them. The Youth Ministers are all given on-site training and support by school staff and also participate in an intensive training session offered by the Young Lasallians staff before the start of the school year. Applications are currently open for part-time roles across a number of schools in New South Wales and Victoria. You can find out more information about the specific vacancies , including application details and a full role Descrip-

tion for Lasallian Youth Ministers by either clicking on the link http://www.delasalle.org.au/blog/applications-open-for-lasallian-youth-ministers-in-2017 or pasting it into your browser. For more information regarding these vacancies, please contact our Assistant Director of Formation (Young Lasalli-ans), Amanda Proulx. Applications are currently open and will close Friday, 30 September 2016. Sincerely Michael Kenny Communications Officer, Lasallian Mission Council

Sportsperson of the Year This week we celebrated the graduation of our Year 12 students. Each year at the graduation ceremony, we present the Sportsperson of the Year to one of our Year 12 students who has excelled in sport. This year we had a cohort of students with plenty of contenders for this award. A couple of weeks ago we presented Madison Hare and Bella Duncan the inaugural award for “Outstanding Contribution to Girls Sport” and both girls were contenders for the Sportsperson of the Year as well. Other girls such as Kaitlyn Noble (Netball), Brielle Lamb (Football), Brooke Mindham (Swimming) and Chelsea Brackin (Swimming) were also outstanding in their chosen sports. There is a massive list of boys who were excellent this year in sport. Jack Stewart could be anything if his body allows him to stay on the football pitch for long enough. Jacob Harrington is playing touch football at the highest level while Joe Mason and Nathan Brown led by example as Captains of our Swim Team and Athletics Team respectively. All these students are fine sportspeople in their own right. While they would all be worthy recipients, our 2016 Sportsperson of the Year is, simply, a class act. Playing rugby for the school as a junior, he debuted in the 1

st XV in Year 10 with a hat trick of tries. He

represented the Australian U18 touch football side as a 16 year old before being selected in the Australian
