The almighty Lord says this: Woe to those ensconced so snugly in Zion and to those who feel so safe on the mountain of Samaria. Lying on ivory beds and sprawling on their divans, they dine on lambs from the flock, and stall-fattened veal; they bawl to the sound of the harp, they invent new instruments of music like David, they drink wine by the bowlful, and use the finest oil for anointing themselves, but about the ruin of Joseph they do not care at all. That is why they will be the first to be exiled; the sprawlersrevelry is over. (R.) Praise the Lord, my soul! It is the Lord who keeps faith for ever, who is just to those who are oppressed. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free. (R.) It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down. It is the Lord who loves the just, the Lord, who protects the stranger. (R.) He upholds the widow and orphan but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zions God, from age to age. (R.) As a man dedicated to God, you must aim to be saintly and religious, filled with faith and love, patient and gentle. Fight the good fight of the faith and win for yourself the eternal life to which you were called when you made your profession and spoke up for the truth in front of many witnesses. Now, before God the source of all life and before Jesus Christ, who spoke up as a witness for the truth in front of Pontius Pilate, I put to you the duty of doing all that you have been told, with no faults or failures, until the Appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, who at the due time will be revealed by God, the blessed and only Ruler of all, the King of kings and the Lord of lords, who alone is immortal, whose home is in inaccessible light, whom no man has seen and no man is able to see: to him be honour and everlasting power. Amen. Alleluia, alleluia! Jesus Christ was rich but he became poor, to make you rich out of his poverty. Alleluia! Jesus said to the Pharisees: There was a rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and feast magnificently every day. And at his gate there lay a poor man called Lazarus, covered with sores, who longed to fill himself with the scraps that fell from the rich mans table. Dogs even came and licked his sores. Now the poor man died and was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried. In his torment in Hades he looked up and saw Abraham a long way off with Lazarus in his bosom. So he cried out, Father Abraham, pity me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.” “My son,Abraham replied remember that during your life good things come your way, just as bad things came the way of Lazarus. Now he is being comforted here while you are in agony. But that is not all: between us and you a great gulf has been fixed, to stop anyone, if he wanted to, crossing from our side to yours, and to stop any crossing from your side to ours. The rich man replied, Father, I beg you then to send Lazarus to my fathers house, since I have five brothers, to give them warning, so that they do not come to this place of torment too.” “They have Moses and the prophets, said Abraham let them listen to them.” “Ah no, father Abraham, said the rich man but if someone comes to them from the dead, they will repent. Then Abraham said to him, If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead.”’ The scriptural quotations are taken from the Jerusalem Bible, published and copyright 1966, 1967 and 1968 by Darton Longman and Todd Ltd and Doubleday & Co Inc, and used by permission of the publishers. Much has been achieved as all members of our school community work together to provide quality learning outcomes for our students in the Catholic tradition. A feature of our school year and for the next couple of years will be the various building projects that we are undertaking. In Term 2 this year we opened the doors of our newly refurbished Santa Maria Centre. This building was originally our open-air multipurpose hall and it underwent quite significant improvements. We added a stage, a tuckshop, storage areas and enclosed the whole building with the bonus being we were also able to air- condition it. We are currently putting the finishing touches on the project by installing a state-of-the-art audio- visual system. Our school Awards Evening will be conducted on Wednesday 30 October and we are excited about being able to conduct this important event in the new Santa Maria Centre. Another significant building project due to be completed early in 2020 is the construction of an industry standard kitchen, adjoining dining room and four new classrooms. These completed facilities will allow us to offer high quality hospitality courses and for students and teachers to access modern, engaging and flexible teaching spaces. These new spaces will feature the ability to have a variety of configurations and therefore improve our teachers ability to be able to cater for various learning styles. I must take this opportunity to also mention that we have also applied for a grant to construct a new library, two new classrooms and new science lab. We find out the result of this grant next month and Im very hopeful it will be approved. If confirmed these new facilities will be constructed in 2020 to occupy in 2021. Apart from our building projects we are also looking to improve our seating, shade areas, sporting fields, playgrounds and landscaping. The completed masterplan will ensure Gilroy Santa Maria has teaching and outdoor facilities that are second to none and will provide an enhanced experience for all our community for years to come. We again received outstanding news at the beginning of the school year regarding our 2018 Year 12 graduates. celebrate the Ordination of Emene. We will be collecting donations of non-perishable breakfast supplies to help out the Tokelau community for this event (eg UHT m

ilk, cereal, long life juice, spreads etc). If any parishioners are able to assist, donations can be placed in boxes at St Patrick’s and St Peter’s, left at Canossa and St Teresa’s Churches or dropped into the Parish Office.

The Ingham branch of the Knights of the Southern Cross extend an invitation to parishioners, an all students of our schools to attend the Public Rosary. In case of rain –venue will be either Our Lady of Lourdes school or Mercy Hall. The past couple of years numbers have dwindled for this important Celebration of the Holy Rosary as we seek Our Blessed Mother’s help against the evils of the world. All Graces given by God pass through Our Blessed Mother. Further info ph. Joe 0437033934 or Peter 0407166570

important role that continues throughout the year. Our Yr 6 Transition Days again included children from Lourdes, St Peter’s and our local State schools. These days allowed local primary students to experience our wonderful facilities as well as getting a taste of the many new subjects they will study in secondary school. We have a safe and welcoming community and I know many of the Yr 6 students felt very comfortable being at the college during their visits. I’m pleased to report that we look like having over seventy Yr 7 students beginning next year, by far our largest intake for several years. The spiritual life of our school is another feature of our school year. Our community celebrated some wonderful masses and liturgies that complimented our religious education program. Our Catholic teachings strive to make a difference in the lives of those in our College by challenging our students to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of our wider community. It’s great to see students and staff give witness to these values with their involvement in the Australian Catholic Youth Festival, Young Vinnies and YCS groups. Another feature of the spiritual life was our new school-based Religion course that began this year for our senior students. The program includes a practical component with all students living their faith by serving and helping others in various capacities within our communities. Apart from the academic and spiritual life of the school, student involvement in sporting and cultural activities is also very important. Thanks to the generosity of staff we had many children participating in sporting events throughout the year, including swimming, cross country, athletics and other team sports. The involvement of our netball and rugby league teams in state carnivals was again a feature of the sporting calendar. Our artistic students were also exposed to some great opportunities in a variety of public displays and performances including the Mulkadee Arts Festival in Townsville, Ingham Arts Festival and our own musical “Hairspray”.

I know many parishioners have close ties to Gilroy Santa Maria College either as past students or parents. I invite you to visit our College, I’d be happy to show you around.

All Souls Day is rapidly approaching so we would very much appreciate it if you could please bring in the names you wish to have on our All Souls list for 2019. All names are to be in by 3.00pm Wednesday 23rd October to enable us to prepare the list and send it to our country parishes before All Souls Day. No names will be accepted after this date.

The students who will be attending the ACYF in Perth in December will be holding an Afternoon Tea on Saturday 19 October from 2pm-4pm at Mercy Hall. Tickets $15 per person available from the Parish Office, Gilroy Santa Maria College and St Teresa’s College. They also wished to offer a big thank you to the many wonderful people who supported and baked items for the recent successful ACYF cake stall.

The Tokelau community will be visiting the Diocese to

Understanding the rite of ordination: Anointing of the Hands :

After the investiture, the newly ordained priest kneels before the Bishop who anoints his hands with Sacred Chrism. In the baptismal rite, the newly baptised is anointed on the forehead as a sign of being united with Jesus, priest, prophet, and king. In Confirmation, the confirmand is anointed on the forehead as a ‘sealing with the Holy Spirit.’ Sacred Chrism is also used to anoint the walls and altar during the Dedication of a Church and Altar. In the Ordination of a Bishop, he is anointed on the head as a sign of his distinctive sharing in the headship of Christ over the Church. Priests are anointed on their hands as a sign of their distinctive sharing in Christ’s Priesthood by which they offer the sacrifice of the Mass.
