PRINCIPAL’S

MESSAGE:

IN THE SPOTLIGHT!

GEORDAN’ TALKS ABOUT THE AUSTRALIAN AIR LEAGUE

During the Principal’s Virtual As-sembly Welcome Geordan (4G) was interviewed about his involve-ment with Australian Air League. Geordan has a passion for planes and flying so spends Sunday after-noons with likeminded kids enjoy-ing the Air League based at Ka-wana. Geordan has been a member of Australia Air League for 18 months. So far he has achieved over 12 workbooks covering first aid, air craft recognition, general knowledge, drill proficiency, mete-orology, air navigation just to name a few. He is one the young-est cadets in Queensland and has already impressed Commander Officers across QLD. Further information about Austral-ian Air League can be found at the end of this newsletter.

Working on Writing: This year the school has continued its work on the teaching of writing. This has not only focused on handwriting but has more specifically helped students produce quality styles of writing such as narra-tives, persuasive texts, poems and many other written samples. Our staff report that students have grown in confidence while using such resources as Big Talk, Big Write and Collins Writing.

Big Talk and Big Write have helped students build up their ideas and under-standing of features needed for a piece of writing. Collins Writing is being used in the upper school to help students improve editing and self assess-ment of their work. Mountain Creek State High School uses Collins Writing as a key foundation so it is a great preparation for secondary school. In fact, some staff from upper school and lower secondary have been working to-gether at times to share ideas and build common understandings across the Mountain Creek precinct of schools.

Class Notebook Connectivity: As we all know, this year has been greatly impacted by world events. Many of our routines and events have had to change, but some adjustments have introduced us to innovative ways of working. Previous use of remote learning, highlighted many benefits from using Class Notebook and the internet. Also, we learnt that great frustration occurs if we all try to connect our learning devices at the same time. For this reason, I have requested that teachers across the school organise some of their learning to include small tasks that use Class Notebook.

Over the next fortnight, each year level will receive an alert to help re es-tablish connections to Class Notebook. I would encourage all families to link up at home when you receive the email for your child’s year level.

We are not simply ‘future proofing’ the Creek for possible disruptions to classroom based learning. Use of digital learning between school and home allows parents to participate in activities and possibly communicate with staff in the future. Future newsletters will keep you up to date with our digi-tal learning as we continue to develop our connectivity with families. We live in a beautiful location with many modern services and highly talented people in our school community. I would ask everyone to help us reconnect when you receive the year level alert.

ADMINISTRATION

News from Around the School: It is great to see students enjoying school. During my travels around some of our classrooms, I have spoken to many students about their learning. They have told me about their assessment tasks and many are able to describe their learning goals. Congratulations to them on their enthusiasm and use of Bump It Up Walls and VCOP displays. Our classrooms are filled with many tools that help students plan their next steps for learning. Also, I would like to pass on my congratulations to Mrs Kelly, Ms Baker and Mrs Blanch who recently facilitated a regional Wheel of Wellbeing workshop at the school. It involved a number of teachers and school leaders from across the region. Our team totally redesigned this event to ensure social distancing and safety, but the important message of addressing the wellbeing of students and other members of the community still were crystal clear. We’re very proud of the work that our astute staff are leading within the school and across the region. Well done Mrs Kelly, Ms Baker and Mrs Blanch. Rob Van den Heuvel Principal

DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP STUDENTS

As you are aware there has been some isolated cases of CORONA Virus around Queensland which reminded everyone that it is important not to be complacent. Our groundsman has been busy re-painting the white lines around the school to protect students and staff and to remind par-ents and caregivers of social distancing. Middle and upper school: If you child is in middle or upper school (Years 4-6) please say goodbye to your student at the school gates instead of walking them to their classrooms. If you have to come into the grounds please respect the white line boundaries put in place. Parents are asked NOT TO ENTER CLASSROOMS OR BLOCKS at any time. If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher please can you contact them through email. Please remember too that if your child is sick please keep them at home until they are well again. Thank you

CAFÉ CONNECT In following with restrictions and care to social distancing around Covid-19, please note the Hall verandah is to be used for access the Café ONLY. Please do not use the verandah as a thoroughfare to avoid crowding when people are seated at Café tables so the required distance of 1.5m can be adhered to.

QLD ROAD SAFETY WEEK 24-28 AUGUST

When we’re behind the wheel, driving safely should be our number one priority. You might

be surprised to know that dangerous habits like tailgating, not giving way, and running red

lights, contributed to half of all serious crashes in Queensland.

The Fatal 5 (speeding, mobile phone distraction, drink driving, fatigue and not wearing a

seatbelt) also contributed to over one third of serious crashes where people were seriously

injured or lost their life, from 2014 to 2018.

What can you do? Qld Road Safety week is around the corner! Show your support by kicking those bad driving habits and make our roads a safer place for everyone. Check out the StreetSmarts website for a range of activities and resources https://streetsmarts.initiatives.qld.gov.au/

PREP B LEARN THE “OO” SOUND

Last week we learnt the “oo” sound. We read the book “What do they do with all the poo from all of the animals at the zoo?”

We made Zoo’s in groups using the animals, blocks and lego in our classroom.

We worked really well together and practised cooperating and taking turns.

Once we’d made our zoo’s we took picture of them from a ‘birds eye view.’ In

geography we have to draw our classroom from a ‘birds eye view’ so it was re-

ally good practice. We drew them as a map into our books. It was really fun!

2B DRESS UP AND GOAL SETTING

On Tuesday 4 August 2020, 2B and 2C had a Fairy Tale Character Dress Up Day. We had some great costumes and the students had to fill out a “My Character” sheet, telling about the appearance, qualities, actions and thoughts of their character. 2B had fun at the end of last term dressing up as well, when they had to bring a household object from the past and present and step into the Time Machine to travel back to the time when their object was used. We have been setting goals this term, and the students have chosen 3 goals to work towards in order to improve their results. They have creat-ed a little poster to publish their goals and we have them on display in the classroom.

SKIPPING AROUND THE SCHOOL

It’s been great to watch a group of Year 4 boys come together to skip during their lunch breaks. The skipping rope was made by Fin (4H) using his loom bands. How long will this rope grow? Skipping is an excellent way to promote health, strengthen endurance and stamina and improve the kids rhythm and coordina-tion. It is one of the activities used during the lower schools PMP sessions (Perceptual Motor Program). This is a movement based program which helps young students improve their eye/hand and eye/foot coordination, fitness, balance locomotion and eye-tracking skills.

BELINDA BY PAMELA ALLEN

As part of our Year 3 English unit the students have been studying the book ‘Belinda’ by Pamela Allen. Belinda is an excellent story about a simple couple who live in the country and grow their own vegetables and collect their own milk from their cow, Belinda. Check out these cool paintings of Belinda which 3G students have created to go with their English unit.

MCSS UNIFORM UPDATE

Thank you to all the families that submitted the survey earlier this year about the new uniform. We were overwhelmed with the response which is a testament to the MCSS community and their passion for our school. There was a clear favourite reflected in the survey results and as such, the P and C has elected to go with the majority in designing the new MCSS uniform as pictured. We are excited to announce that accompanying a new uniform, our P and C Associa-tion has a new partnership with our uniform supplier with The School Locker, locat-ed a short distance from our school in the Maroochydore Homemaker Centre. After much consideration, the P and C felt that the benefits of moving to The School Lock-er would make life easier for busy parents. The School Locker essentially provides a ‘one-stop-shop’ for not only our new uni-forms but also shoes, backpacks, stationery, lunch containers, computers (including an Apple identified service provider in store), musical instruments and sports equip-ment, all whilst shopping in air-conditioned comfort, 7 days per week including late nights on Thursdays. Did we mention they sell trampolines as well?! What more can you ask for? Change rooms are available and MCSS will have their own, clearly iden-tified school aisle, so uniform shopping can be done with ease. Anything to make shopping with children more relaxing! All items purchased, whether a uniform for your primary student or a new laptop for students entering high school, will help our school when you mention you’re a Mountain Creek State School family. 10% on all uniforms with a logo and 2.5% on any other item will come back to the school for use for your children via the P and C Association. We realise that change may be confronting and as such, you may have questions around these changes. The next page has answers to many that have already been asked. If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the P and C committee via [email protected]. The Tuckshop staff will have hard copies of the below information but any concerns or queries must come to the above email address please. Thankyou P and C Association

Please note: The full school uniform image above shows girls skorts. The-boys/unisex option is the same but with navy shorts.

P AND C NEWS

NEW UNIFORM FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Why are we changing the uniforms? We feel it is time for a fresher look and this has been discussed now for quite some time. The parent survey received great feedback and all was taken into consideration when decisions were made regarding fabric, styles and colours.

2. Where can I purchase the new uniforms from? All uniform purchases will be available at ‘The School Locker,’ located at the Maroochydore Homemaker Cen-tre. The School Locker are open 7 days a week, hours attached below. You are also welcome to order online and opt for delivery.

3. Why did we move the uniforms from the Tuckshop to ‘The School Locker’? As noted in the introduction, our school will receive a 10% rebate off all uniforms purchased from The School Locker and a 2.5% rebate on any other purchases such as computers, instruments, sporting equip- ment etc. This includes purchases made for yourself or older siblings, not just your primary school aged children. The added bonus of using The School Locker is that it’s open 7 days a week including late nights on Thursday evenings for working families as mentioned above. Also, any uniform purchased from The School Locker has a size guarantee that we cannot presently offer through the Tuckshop. This means that if you pur- chase your child’s uniforms at the start of the Christmas school holidays and then notice they’ve grown come January, you may return your uniform, in its new and unworn condition in exchange for a larger size at no extra cost.

4. What if I need an emergency/last minute uniform? There will be remaining current uniform stock available, along with second-hand current uniforms, to purchase

from the Tuckshop until December 2022. Current uniforms will now be available at 50% off. Full price is not expected for a uniform being fazed out. Availability of sizes and styles for the current uniform will be limited as we transition to the new uniform. Once sold out over the next 2 years, the new uniform will be the only op-tion. Purchasing of the new uniform will commence in December this year, via The School Locker. We will do what we can to help out where required.

5. What fabric is the new uniform made from? Are they breathable? The new polo shirts are made from a cotton back mesh fabric to be comfortable and breathable.

6. Will the new uniform be easy to clean and iron? Absolutely. Being made with the cotton back mesh fabric they will be easy to clean and are designed as a wash and wear fabric so no ironing is required!

7. Will the girls be required to wear the skort and can they still wear dresses? The formal Rugger style navy shorts and sports shorts will be unisex. If your daughter prefers to wear the shorts instead of the new skorts, they are more than welcome to. Please note that the new ‘skorts’ actually resemble more of a tennis-style skirt, with a soft fabric and bike pants sewn into the inside skirt for added comfort when playing sports and during lunch breaks. There has been minimal change to the girl’s dresses so these will continue to be available to wear and will be sold as part of the new uniform via The School Locker.

8. When will we have to purchase the new uniform? The current uniform will still be able to be worn up until December 2022. There will be a 2 year transition from

December 2020 with the new uniforms being compulsory as of January 2023. There will however no longer be a sports shirt required. The current and new polo shirts will be worn Monday to Friday. If you wish, students may continue to wear their current sports shirts during the 2 year transition only until December of 2022. To replace the sports shirts, the new navy bucket hat with white trim as pictured, is reversible and the 4 sports houses will be represented on the flipside of the hats. When representing their sports house, the students will reverse their hats displaying the coloured side. The hats have an external toggle to adjust the fit and they are light and dry easily on hot, sweaty days.

P AND C NEWS

9. What will happen to the Prep’s yellow hats? The yellow Prep hats will no longer be available. All new Prep students will be able to purchase the new re-

versible hats and can continue to wear them through future year levels.

10. What price point is the new uniform? The prices will vary depending on the item. The polo shirts will be $1 cheaper, while other items such as the girl’s dresses will remain the same and there will be a small increase on the shorts. A price list has been attached.

11. Will there be long pants/track pants available to purchase? At this stage there is no plan to bring in long pants or track pants with our logos. Students can continue to

wear navy leggings or navy track pants on the cooler winter days. The School Locker does have plain navy long pants to purchase.

12. Do I have to purchase the school’s navy jacket, or can my child continue to wear one that has been out sourced? While we encourage the purchase of the school jackets and shorts/skorts, it is still acceptable to purchase plain navy jumpers without hoods, and shorts and skorts from other stores if preferred. Shorts and skorts with the MCSS logo from The School Locker provides a 10% rebate to the school.

13. Do you think this new uniform looks very similar to some other Sunshine Coast schools? We have taken every effort to keep the ‘Mountain Creek State School’ colour theme. While there may be

some more navy on the new polos, it will still have the original ‘Mountain Creek’ brighter blue colour and be identified by our logo.
