Symbol Our Oak Tree, “Old Ann”
Motto “Roots to Success”
OUR ROOTS TEACH US TO…
Respect Ourselves and Others.
Own our Learning.
Own our Actions.
Treasure our Talents.
Serve our Community.
These are our “Roots to Success”.
Song You’re a grand old school
You’re the best of them all.
And together we all sing your praise.
You have brought success and made us one
For learning in challenging ways.
Everyone feels true to the red and the blue
We know effort and honor’s the rule;
As long as “Old Ann” stands so tall,
We’ll be proud of you, Austin School!

The Rigor/Relevance Framework is a tool developed by the International Center to examine curriculum, instruction, and assessment along the two dimensions of higher standards and student achievement. It can be used in the development of both instruction and assessment. In addition, teachers can use it to monitor their own progress in adding rigor and relevance to their instruction, and to select appropriate instructional strategies for differentiating instruction and facilitating higher achievement goals. The Knowledge Taxonomy (y-axis) is a continuum based on the six levels of Bloom's Taxonomy, which describes the increasingly complex ways in which we think. The low end involves acquiring knowledge and being able to recall or
6
locate that knowledge. The high end labels the more complex ways in which individuals use knowledge, such as taking several pieces of knowledge and combining them in both logical and creative ways.

SCHOOL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES (Austin employees will adhere to MCPSS policies and procedures. MCPSS Employee Handbook is accessible
from the website)
Leadership Teachers and staff members are required to serve in a leadership capacity on a variety of
committees, programs, Professional Learning Teams, etc. You are responsible for being
present at all meetings. Everyone on the committee should take an equal share of the
assignment and should share in leadership roles as needed. PLCIA forms or agenda minutes
originals should be kept and copies should be placed in Mrs. Delaney’s box.
SCHOOL ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE
Teachers are expected to be in the classrooms a minimum of fifteen minutes before school begins and remain
a minimum of fifteen minutes after the students are dismissed (7:50 – 3:20).
PAYROLL: Payroll specifics are outlined below. Please read and follow payroll procedures carefully.
During payroll, the bookkeeper’s office may be closed. If the door is closed, please refrain from disruptions
so that adequate attention can be given to attending to payroll.
KRONOS TIMEKEEPER
Teachers will be required to use the Kronos timekeeper to sign in each morning. If you forget to clock-
in or your punch is rejected you MUST fill out a time record card (HR 4500A) so that your time can be
corrected. Failure to do so may lead to unpaid leave. Place all completed Payroll forms in Ms. Spelton’s
payroll box.
SICK LEAVE
Tell the principal when you know that you must be absent; otherwise, in an emergency, call or text her
at (455-5038 or 377-9641 Jones) prior to 7:00 a.m. or at school after 7:30 a.m.
Regulations of the Mobile County Public Schools define personal illness, incapacitating injury, illness in the
family, and or death in the family as excused absences. A doctor’s certificate is required for a person
absent 10 or more consecutive days, or upon the request of the school administrator. Employees must
complete a HR-124 and a HR 4500 A upon returning to work from sick leave. Deductions will be made from
paycheck for sick days used in excess of those accrued. Information concerning the Sick Leave Bank will be
made upon request.
ALL ABSENCES SHOULD BE RECORDED IN AESOP.
PERSONAL LEAVE AND PROFESSIONAL LEAVE
Employees must complete form HR-124 and HR4500A prior to anticipated leave for approval or
disapproval by the principal except in an emergency, when oral permission will be provided. Employees shall
be prohibited from taking personal leave during the first and last two weeks school is in session...except for
emergency. (School Board Policy) ALL ABSENCES SHOULD BE RECORDED IN SUBFINDER. When
taking PROFESSIONAL LEAVE, indicate specific meeting on HR-124.
10
PURCHASE ORDERS AND BOOKKEEPING
Purchase orders will be housed in the teacher workroom. There are specific P.O.s for specific types of orders.
Please make certain you grab the correct P.O. P.O.s should be filled out according to the sample provided by
the bookkeeper. Once your P.O. is completed, place it in Mrs. Jones’ box. (Do NOT DATE PO until after
you receive it back.) Upon approval, Mrs. Jones will hand the P.O. over to Ms. Spelton for processing. The
P.O. will then be returned to you with a P.O. number at which time you may place your order and sign/date
the P.O. Return completed POs to Ashley once items are ordered.
Teacher Allocation
Teacher allocation will be $405.45. Shipping/handling and other charges must be allotted when totaling
the order. You will be responsible for any charges over the allocated $405.45. Mrs. Jones will let you know
when monies are released.
EQUIPMENT
There is a great deal of equipment in our school. Each piece of equipment is numbered and will be checked
out by that number. After checking out equipment, it is your responsibility. If anything happens to it, let the
administrators know right away. Please do not allow students to move any equipment without an adult being
present. Please make sure all devices’ are handled with care and placed in the lock box when out of the
classroom.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
A substitute should be called for your classroom from the list of certified substitutes. Please call your own
substitute so that you can discuss lesson plans and schedules. The following procedures should be performed:
1. Call a substitute from the list of approved substitutes. Inform substitute to sign in by 7:50.
2. Please notify the administrator as soon as possible when you will be absent
during the regular work hours.
3. If an additional day is needed, call the front office before 2:00 p.m.
Board policy requires that teachers provide lesson plans for substitute teachers. Teachers are expected
to implement this policy. Please have a “sub” folder visible on your desk or work area, with plans which
include all areas of the curriculum. In addition to plans, please include a supply of “filler” activities that can
serve as practice for objectives currently being taught, or make a written note of where these activities or
games are located. Have “emergency” sub plans available daily in the event you have to be out on short
notice.
FACULTY MEETINGS
Monday of each week will be reserved for faculty meetings, in-service meetings, grade level meetings, or
parent meetings. Please do not schedule appointments with doctors, dentists, etc. for Monday unless there is
an emergency. In return, faculty meetings will only be scheduled on Mondays unless an emergency situation
arises.
TEACHER WORKDAYS
Teacher workdays are designed to allow teachers time to complete grades and prepare for the next quarter.
Teachers are asked to dress casual and comfortable, yet still remain professional. Lunch times vary and will be
announced on Teacher Workday. Children should not be on campus on Teacher Workday except for
11
emergency circumstances when they should remain inside your classroom and not serve as a disruption to you
or anyone else working in the school.
CLASS PARTIES
Only two class parties are allowed during the school year. These are scheduled parties at Christmas and
teacher choice. Class parties must be conducted on campus in the teacher’s classroom and may not last for
more than one hour. Any other social activities requiring time from instructional activities must be
approved by the principal. Mobile County adheres to a health and wellness plan to promote student
wellness. The amount of unhealthy snacks must be kept to a minimum. Take measures to promote wellness.
For example, provide miniature cupcakes rather than full-size cupcakes, and offer a variety of healthy snack
alternatives.
TELEPHONE
Even though there are times when the faculty and staff must use the telephone for personal reasons, try to keep
these to a minimum. Receiving telephone calls will be discouraged and should only be for emergencies.
Messages will be placed in your box by the office staff. Also, personal cell phones should be on silent or
vibrate at all times. Refrain from using cell phones for personal calls /texts except during your planning
time.
The office telephone is a business phone and should not be used by children except in emergencies,
(homework is not an emergency). The teacher will decide if the request is an emergency and give the child
permission to use the phone. Try to find local classroom solutions if students forget things. Please explain to
the children and remind them that doing without something can be a good lesson in responsibility.
MONEY COLLECTING AND RECEIPTING
All money collected for field trips, assemblies, etc. should be COUNTED AND RECEIPTED BY THE
TEACHER in the Teacher/Sponsor Receipt Book or on the MULTIPLE RECEIPT FORM (for $25.00 or
less). Each teacher is responsible for his/her receipt book and must return it to the office at the end of the
school year. Please turn in all field trip money to the bookkeeper in the provided envelope early in the
morning (BY 10:00 a.m.). Money may not be held in the classroom.
ATTENDANCE
Teachers are required to post attendance on their computers by 8:45 each morning. If you need assistance or
have any questions, please contact us in the office. You are also responsible for completing a
20 day attendance report.
12
Attendance is a legal issue and should always be handled as a potential court document. All absences must
be coded within 3 days of student returning to school. You may not change the code of absences after
the 3 day period. All absences after the 8th absence must be coded unexcused unless a Dr.’s note is provided.
If the student has a chronic ailment letter on file, their parent excuse must mention the child missed school due
to his/her chronic ailment for the absence to be coded as “D”. Please make certain parents are aware of this.
Court Documents All requests must be made through the office. Teachers should not provide letters or requested information to
parents other than attendance, report cards, etc. as required by law.
FIRST AID AND SICKNESS
Students who are too sick to do their work may be sent to the Health Room (Office). Parents will be called by
someone there. If the student does not have a fever or visible signs of illness, he will be returned to the
classroom. Students sent to the Health Room must have their name recorded on the First Aid Log. Teachers
are required to complete a “Health Room Pass” form for all students sent to First Aid. We have a
school nurse based at Austin this year. Welcome Ms. Rosalind Wallace.
In the event that a child should bring medicine to school, please send the medicine to the office. Prescription
medication can be given only with written permission from the parent. The medicine will be kept in the First
Aid room.
Accidents are to be reported by the teacher on form SS-402. The following should be reported:
1. Pupils injured severely enough to cause the loss of any part of the school day.
2. Pupils injured severely enough to require the services of a medical person - doctor, dentist or
emergency.
3. Those school jurisdictional accidents which result in any property damage.
REPORT OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
Teachers are required to report suspected cases of communicable disease to the office.
EARLY DISMISSAL
All early dismissals must be handled by the office. No child will be allowed to leave the school campus
without the principal’s permission. Parents who come for children before the regular dismissal time must sign
the early dismissal book. Please discourage early dismissals after 2:30 p.m.
CHILD ABUSE
Should teachers have knowledge of a suspected child abuse case, please notify the principal so that proper
reporting procedures may be followed. It is not the school personnel’s responsibility to investigate and
determine if there has been a child abuse, as this is the responsibility of the Welfare Department. Our
responsibility is to report that there is reason to suspect abuse and let the proper investigating authorities
follow-up. It is the responsibility of the teacher (or any adult working on campus) to report suspected abuse to
DHR. If you have questions, please speak to Mrs. Jones or Mrs. McElroy.
13
LESSON PLANS/GRADEBOOK
Teachers are expected to plan at least one week in advance. Please refer to the Reading/Language Arts
Curriculum and Elementary Math handbook. The following APPENDICES show an example of a lesson
plan using the 5E model (additional information can be viewed from the MCPSS website). All Plans must
be typed in ONENOTE and shared with the administrator. Plans should be on your computer (either pulled
up or minimized depending on activity) at all times.

RTI/PST
The primary purpose of the PST is to ensure that all students are provided opportunities to be successful
academically and behaviorally. Students failing core courses should be discussed in PST meetings
to determine appropriate support. PST will meet monthly to examine data and to offer instructional and intervention strategies in order to
improve student achievement. All forms including weekly intervention sheets must be current and updated
weekly. Forms should be kept for the entire school year. The forms (students in PST 4th quarter), should be
filed in the cum. folder at the end of the year.
PST Manual 2015-2016 will be kept on file in the office and meeting room (back of library) and will be shared
on our school’s shared site.
17
*Per superintendent- LEGGINGS, Spandex material, skinny jeans, etc. are NOT in the dress code. When in doubt,
DON’T WEAR IT!
18
RECORDS AND REPORTS
All teachers are expected to keep accurate and neat records which are up-to-date. They should be
legible and in BLACK INK. Please make certain that all forms, cards, etc. are COMPLETE. Cumulative
Records and Health Records can serve as legal documents and therefore, should be kept accordingly.
Permanent cumulative records are to be checked out in the office and are not to leave the administrative
building. Student demographic information (social security numbers, address, telephone numbers, grades,
etc.) is confidential. Do not leave information in view of students or anyone who is not a full time employee
of MCPSS.
EDUCATE ALABAMA Each teacher is expected to follow the directions and suggestions found in the various guides. The teacher
evaluation manual may be downloaded from the Alsde.com website. Once your PLP is complete, evidence
should be posted at least once per quarter.
ERRANDS
Students running errands are discouraged. Teachers should make every effort to acquire materials and
information before and after school. In the event that teachers find it necessary to send students on errands,
only one student should be sent, with the exception of Kindergarten and first grade, in which case, teachers are
expected to send written messages when requesting information or materials from the office.
BULLETIN BOARDS/HALLWAY DISPLAYS
Classroom bulletin boards should be colorful, timely, rigorous, relevant and teachable. They should be
changed often to reflect weekly/bi-weekly progress in the curriculum. When a person enters the
classroom, what is presently being taught should be reflected in the total physical environment. Bulletin
boards should be teaching tools - either through providing reinforcement and evaluation by displaying
student’s work, or through teaching and reinforcing skills or concepts in the form of workable bulletin boards,
displays, etc. Hallway Displays should be changed at least once a month and on the first of the month.
Hallway Rules • Voices on Zero. Use time wisely!
• Keep our restroom clean. Take pride in your school!
• Dispose of materials properly.
• Leave personal and class materials in the classroom.
• Find an adult to help with problems.
19
CONTACT WITH PARENTS
PARENT CONFERENCES
Teachers conduct parent conferences for each student, one each semester. The first parent conference
should take place at the end of the first quarter, and the second conference should take place at the end
of the third quarter. Often many problems can be solved when teachers and parents work together to help the
child. Document the date of the conference on your Parent/Teacher Conference Forms. Conferences should
be held when students receive low C’s, D’s or E’s on their mid-quarter reports. Informing parents can possibly
avoid failure at the end of the year.
If a parent wishes to visit your class, he/she is asked to visit for no more than 30 minutes. Parental classroom
visits should be scheduled with the teacher in order to protect classroom instructional time.
GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT
The school counselor is on staff to provide a comprehensive guidance program for the students in grades K-5.
The counselor provides activities to meet the needs of the students, consults with teachers, staff, and parents to
enhance their effectiveness in helping students, and provides support to other elementary school educational
programs.
PTA
Teachers are invited to attend PTA meetings unless there are extenuating circumstances that are brought to the
attention of the principal. Meetings are held throughout the school year. Teachers may be asked to prepare a
program for PTA involving their students.
PARENT BULLETIN
The school publishes a parent bulletin at least quarterly. School announcements, menus, etc., are placed in the
bulletin. Please see that each student has a copy in his/her hand or that a copy has been emailed. This could
also be a homework assignment in reading so that parents will be encouraged to internalize school news and
events.
ROOM PARENT
The Room Parent can help coordinate extracurricular activities in which your children may be involved such
as:
a) Field trips
b) PTA fund raising activities
c) Christmas party and end of the year party
d) Health room
e) Special snacks
f) Preparing for PTA programs or physical education programs
g) Contacting parent volunteers to assist the teacher
h) Field day activities
20
Visitors All visitors must sign-in in the office and receive a visitor’s pass. Please do not allow parents to visit your
classroom without a pass and a scheduled conference. If you see a visitor without a pass, please ask if you
can help them and send them to the office.
DISCIPLINE: CAFETERIA
Teachers are expected to work with students and implement the following rules for acceptable cafeteria
standards:
• Use quiet restaurant voices.
• Voices on ZERO in lines and at table until teacher arrives.
• Pick up trash and keep our café clean.
• Get everything you need the first time. Remain seated once at your table.
• Use your best manners and remember to thank our café workers.

cafeteria as soon as they arrive on campus. Students will not be allowed in the cafeteria after 8:05 a.m. (unless
they arrive on a late school bus).
*All students will receive “no charge” lunch and breakfast. Lunch forms will not be required.
Bathroom Rules
• Voices on Zero. Use time wisely!
• Keep our restroom clean. Take pride in your school!
• Dispose of materials properly.

CONDITION OF BUILDINGS AND ROOMS
BUILDING AND ROOMS
Cleanliness is the responsibility of each individual in the school. Please see that your students do their
part in keeping the rooms and their desks neat and in order. The custodians will sweep daily, mop at least
weekly, and do a limited amount of dusting. Keep desks away from the walls and windows. Encourage the
students to be paper conscious regarding the waste of paper and paper on the floor. Marking, writing on walls,
scratching and cutting on desks, etc., will not be tolerated. Make sure that students do not take pencils,
pointed objects, etc. to the restrooms.
It is the teachers’ responsibility to report over looked custodial problems to the administration in
writing. This may include: sweeping, mopping, waxing, trash, problems with locks, doors, AC, light bulbs,
etc.
TEXTBOOKS
All textbooks will be checked out with the assigned personnel. All books that do go home (math,
spelling, English, social studies, science) MUST have a cover over them in order to protect the book from
wear and tear. When a child transfers, his books are to be sent to the person in charge of books and his book
card cleared.
FIELDTRIPS
As a directive from central office, FTs must be limited to two per year. Anything in addition needs to be
discussed with Mrs. Jones.
Link to MCPSS FT guidelines:
https://mcpss.sharepoint.com/sites/AADocumentsResources/Shared%20Documents/2015-
2016%20Field%20Trip%20Directions%2C%20Forms%2C%20and%20Approved%20Locations
Non-Negotiables:
Grade level planning- Grade levels should plan collaboratively prior to instruction. Materials and activities should be
discussed and planned so all teachers are on the same page in regards to instruction and assessments. Everyone should
have input into every subject regardless of the plan you are responsible for “typing”.
Professional Behavior- We are here for students. Every decision made and action taken at this school should be in the
best interest of students. Be proactive, rather than reactive and keep emotions in check.
Duty & Monitoring Students- If something happens to a student while they are supposed to be in our care, we can be
held responsible. Make certain students are monitored carefully at all times. If you must step away, make certain
another adult is aware and monitoring your students.
Morning Take-In: This time sets the tone for your day. Plan calm, quiet morning routines. This is not the time for
socialization. Welcome students and teach them their daily routines preparing for their day. Morning take-in is a great
time for “DEAR”: Drop Everything and Read
Grades: Keep grades current in INOW. Grades should be updated weekly at a minimum.
Cafeteria, Hallway routines, Restroom Routines, Etc.: Class behavior is representative of their teacher. School-wide
organization/ behavior is representative of the administrator. We will run an organized (safe and orderly) school at all
times. Make certain your class follows our school-wide rules, procedures and expectations.
Instruction: Classroom instruction should be active and engaging. Teachers should facilitate student learning. Plan
rigorous, relevant instruction. Plan for rigorous questioning and meaningful opportunities for students to work
collaboratively. Teachers should actively circulate and monitor collaborative groups. Small groups should be pulled in
ELA and math for intense instruction based on students’ needs. ELA & Science/SS should be integrated as much as
possible. *Intervention should take place daily and intervention plans should be kept in instructional binder.
21st Century Skills Integration: The 4Cs: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, and Critical Thinking- will be
integrated throughout instruction through the use of technological tools, Talents Unlimited, collaborative grouping and
our labs. When planning lessons, make certain 21st century skills are integrated.
