Nagle College Newsletter
Dear Nagle College Community Reflec on The happiest people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything. Unknown Advent We enter the church season of Advent this week. Over the next four weeks we are invited to prepare for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. It is a me of spiritual reflec on as well as cheer and an cipa on. Families are encouraged to find quiet moments ligh ng candles – tradi onally a wreath with four candles is used and the four candles symbolize hope, peace, love and joy. Volunteers Recently the Canteen Volunteers held their Christmas breakup with a dinner together. It was an opportunity to thank all for their generous contribu ons and to celebrate their efforts to provide for our young people. Our managers Nesia and Geraldine entertained us with a range of fun stories, awards, ac vi es and prizes. Special acknowledgement and thanks were provided for Bern Walker and Cathy Sharp, who have been running the second hand uniform shop for many years and whose youngest children have graduated this year. Fresh Art V Congratula ons to the students involved in the presenta on of the senior art works at the East Gippsland Art Gallery over the past three weeks. It was great to see so much talent and crea vity. Thanks to the staff, Mr Bryan Smith and all the Art staff for organising the event. Promo on Once again the three weeks of Promo on has been a very produc ve way to end the year. There has been energy, focus and enthusiasm in our classes through to the final session. Presenta on Night Congratula ons to the many students who received cer ficates or awards at either the Merit Assembly or at Presenta on Night. It was also good to see most families in a endance at Presenta on night. A ending with students is a very tangible way of demonstra ng your interest in their educa on as well as showing support for the College. A special thank you to Mrs Michelle Atkinson for all her work in coordina ng the evening and the larger Nagle staff team who assisted in many and varied ways. Music Camp Great to hear of the many achievements and good performances of our talented musicians who last week journeyed north to NSW. Thank you to Mr Andrew Long, Mrs Maureen Plunke , Mrs Dionne Re no and their team for their guidance and care.

Salesian College Captains’ Conference This week I had the pleasure to a ending the Salesian College Captains’ Conference in Lysterfield with the 2016 College Captains, Jordan Strini and Breanna Janson. This event brings together the College Captains from all the Salesian schools across Australia and this reminds us that we are privileged to be a part of the larger Salesian family. Breanna and Jordan spoke with great pride about their school and have come away with some very exci ng ideas for 2016. Parent Forums 2016 Each year I organise a Parent Forum that aims to inform families about issues that may impact on their children. These forums are usually held in the first term or early in second term. I would like to take this opportunity to invite parents to email me at [email protected] with any topics they would like to be included as part of the forum. Summer Uniform 2016 I would like to ask all families to ensure that their child returns to the College in 2016 in the correct Nagle College summer uniform. I ask families to support the College by ensuring that your child is wearing the uniform in the prescribed manner, this includes ensuring that the daughters dress/skirt is at the appropriate length. If you are experiencing any issues with mee ng our uniform expecta ons I ask that you contact your child’s House Coordinator either by email or telephoning 5152 6122.
End of Year Finishing Date A reminder to all families that students in Year 8 and 9 will finish for the year this Friday 4 December at 3.20 pm. May the Lord bless you and keep you safe over this holiday period. I look forward to working in partnership with you in 2016. Promo on Program and Student Learning Programs

The promo on period for 2015 has drawn to an end. The two and a half weeks of classes provided an opportunity for students to meet their teachers and commence their programs for 2016. The curriculum covered is part of the first semester’s work for 2016 and will be assessed as such. It has been pleasing to see all students engage with the learning programs and finish the year on a ‘high note’. It has been par cularly pleasing to see senior students ‘step‐up’ to the challenges of their final years of schooling by embracing their studies with renewed energy and enthusiasm. Furthermore, the promo on period has provided them with an opportunity to ‘kick start’ their programs, giving them a clear understanding of the expecta ons and the requirements for the various studies they have chosen and the chance to do some preparatory work during the holiday break. If a student missed any instruc on during the promo on period, they are advised to liaise with another student in their class to ensure that they understand and complete the work that has been set. Whilst holidays are designed to provide opportuni es for rest and relaxa on, there is a clear expecta on that senior students will complete all the work set by their teachers for the holiday break prior to the beginning of the 2016 academic year. Priori sing Commitments in 2016 Studies show us that students can benefit from being part of the workforce whilst s ll at school. Many of our students have part‐ me work and benefit significantly from these experiences. It is mely though for senior students, par cularly those studying a VCE Unit 3 & 4 program in 2016, to think carefully about the number of hours they commit to paid work. There will be further advice on this issue next year; however, it is worth considering the demands of VCE and how excessive hours devoted to paid work can impact adversely on students’ abili es to effec vely manage their studies. VCE Unit 3 & 4 Trial Examina ons 2016 Whilst the Term 3 break in 2016 may seem like a long me away, planning for next year’s trial examina ons has already begun. Students have been advised that trial examina ons for those studying a VCE or VCEVET Unit 3 & 4 will be conducted during the second week of the Term 3 holiday break. A endance at these exams is compulsory, hence parents are asked not to plan family holidays for this me. Addi onal informa on will be made available for students and parents early in 2016. Year 7 2016 Orienta on Day The Year 7 class for 2016 had their Orienta on Day on Tuesday 1 December when they a ended the College for the day. They received a lot of informa on for 2016 and par cipated in a special program to give them an opportunity to meet fellow students and teachers and get a li le taste of life at Nagle College. This day makes the start of 2016 so much easier and smoother for students. 2017 Scholarships Nagle College has a scholarship program for high achieving students. This reinforces the culture of high achievement and excellence within the College. The scholarships are open for new and current students. There are scholarships for Academic Excellence, the Arts and Sport for all year levels. There is a scholarship test that all aspiring scholarship holders must sit as part of this process. The test is set and corrected by the ACER (Australian Council of Educa onal Research). The test is on Saturday 19 March, 2016 and applica ons close on Friday 4 March 2016. Parents enrol for the scholarship test online on the ACER website and there is a cost involved in si ng the tests. Informa on about the scholarship program and how to apply is on the Nagle College website. Sta onery Lists The Nagle College 2016 booklist(s) have been available for ordering for some me via the Schoolworks Supplies website (www.schoolworkssupplies.com.au). Order line items are listed on your student’s individual booklist which will correspond to Schoolworks Supplies ordering system. Orders should have been placed by now. Any student undertaking a VCE, VET or VCAL subject in 2016 should have already collected their text books.

Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars’ Program The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars’ Program offers high‐achieving Year 11 and 12 students the opportunity to engage with The Melbourne University through a program of events at the Parkville campus. Schools nominate up to five outstanding current Year 10 students who will commence Year 11 in 2016 to become Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars. The University aims to select at least one student from every secondary school in Victoria that par cipates in the program to a total of 700 each year. The scholarship program provides an opportunity for students to get a taste of university life; the chance to meet and connect with other students; the opportunity to develop leadership and community involvement skills; and access to University of Melbourne resources, academics and events at our Parkville campus. We were fortunate to have two Kwong Lee Dow Scholars awarded in our school for 2016. The successful recipients for this scholarship are Angelina Clancy and Alisa Romboy. We congratulate them on their successful applica ons and hope they enjoy and appreciate the tailored program of events and ac vi es that will support and enhance their secondary studies, inspire their career plans and provide opportuni es to interact with the University community.

State Runners Up for Nagle College Table Tennis Last week a team of four Nagle College students (Josh Street, Jarryd Stanton, James Wigg and Nathan Hay) travelled to Melbourne to compete in the SSV Intermediate Boys’ Secondary Table Tennis State Finals at MSAC, Albert Park. The boys had made it to the finals in previous years but never won a match, and so expecta ons were not high. However, the team won all their first round matches against some formidable opponents including Balwyn High School, who have won a number of State tles in recent years. Results for the first round were: Nagle College 4 rubbers to 2 against Balwyn High School, 5 to 1 against Eaglehawk Secondary College and 5 to 1 against Western Heights Secondary College. Finishing top of their pool, the boys then encountered Warrnambool College in the Semi Finals. The matches were tough but the Nagle boys eventually took it out 4 rubbers to 2, and went through to the final against Melbourne High School, who are seen as the ‘benchmark’ in school table tennis. When up against former top na onally ranked players, matches are not easy to win. The boys, however, put up a magnificent effort but couldn’t quite get past the former champions. All team members are to be congratulated on their tremendous efforts for which they have made themselves, the Bairnsdale & District Table Tennis Associa on and Nagle College, very proud. Year 7 and 8 Boys’ Hockey A er winning the East Gippsland and Gippsland compe ons, the Boys’ Year 7 and 8 Hockey team travelled to Melbourne to contest the State Finals. Played at Footscray Hockey Centre in very hot condi ons, the boys had a tough day against some of the stronger teams from across the state. Their first game was against Camberwell High School, where Nagle managed to secure a draw with a late goal from Max Bowden. Jordan Cullen was great in goals to keep his team in the game. In the second game against St Joseph’s College in Mildura, the Nagle defence was put under plenty of pressure from the start, eventually succumbing to a stronger team 3‐0. Be er players included Charlie Coulton and Mitchell Su on in defence, and Kelby Bartle and Xavier Derham in a ack. In the third game against Maribyrnong Sports Academy, Nagle went into the half me break just one goal down. The Nagle forwards were unlucky on several occasions not to equalize but Maribyrnong took control in the second half to run out 5‐1 winners. Be er players in this game included Max Bowden, Zac Stevens and Jordan Ross. Other players in the team included Daniel Bryant, Wil Capes, Callum Greer, Connor Hammond and Jhas Singh. Coach Blake Stevens praised the efforts of the younger players and congratulated the team on their posi ve approach and performance on the day.

Josh Swims to Victory Nagle student, Josh Seignior, claimed the gold medal in the 15 years 100m breaststroke in the Pacific School Games in Adelaide last week with the me 1:08:09. Josh also made it through to the finals in his 50m and 200m breaststroke events. He also competed in the 50m bu erfly, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle individual events during the week, and was a member of the Victorian 200m and 400m medley relays, and the 200m freestyle relay and 400m freestyle relay teams. Congratula ons Josh. Band Tour Nagle Music has just returned from a very successful tour to the Sapphire Coast, NSW. During the second week of Promo on, our ensembles (Tunes Band, Senior Guitar Ensemble, Strings, ‘Beat iT!’ Percussion, Choir, Concert Band, Cookies and Cream Showband) ‘banded’ together for the four day tour. Here is a brief summary of some of our ac vi es: Day 1: A er depar ng the College at 8.00 am, we performed our first concert at St Brendan’s Primary School in Lakes Entrance. This was warmly received and many of our students were remembered fondly by the St Brendan’s staff. Back on the road, we headed to our camp at Merimbula. Students took in the wonderful surroundings and soon se led in, socialising before the big few days ahead. Day 2: Up early and off to perform a concert at a Tura Beach Aged Care Facility. Many of the residents thought the concert was going to be from the ‘Naval’ band. The organisers knew exactly who we were as we had visited back in 2012, and once they saw the students (obviously not the Navy) everybody enjoyed the outdoor performance in their lovely gardens. Our next stop was the Merimbula CBD where we took over the main street corner and down to the Tourist Informa on Centre. Students performed in small groups in a ‘busking style’ to lots of local shop owners, tourists and passers by. The larger groups ‘Cookies and Cream Showband’ and Percussion performed on the street corner. This was a great performance space. A highlight on this hot day was the owner of the corner ice‐creamery shouted all of our students a free ice‐cream (we may happened to have men oned ‘Cookies & Cream’ many mes …). Next we packed up and relocated to a func on room at the Bowls Club where we partook in a two‐hour rehearsal. We combined all our ensembles together in prepara on for the College Presenta on Night. Our busy day was not over yet ‐ a er dinner we entertained the guests and staff at the Merimbula Beach Holiday Park with an evening concert out on the lawns.

Day 3: Up even earlier for a windy day heading for Bega. We were greeted by eager students at St Patrick’s Primary School who clapped enthusias cally. They even clapped in apprecia on when the power came back on – (crews had been working outside the school to rec fy a blown down power line). The power came back on in me for our final song! Well done to the music students for coping so well and adap ng to the ‘powerless’ condi ons. A er another pack‐up (we were star ng to get a bit over the setup and pack‐ups by now, but we were ge ng much faster due to great team‐work), we returned to Merimbula to perform at Magic Mountain. The park had opened their large ‘Rocka House Stage’ where many famous acts have rocked the large audience grass area. Even though our audience was small in numbers it was a great experience to perform in such a venue with the very professional outdoor stage. Luckily the wind was blowing from behind the stage so the performances sounded great. A er yet another precision pack‐up by Caleb (our ‘chief trailer packer’), the students let loose on the park and enjoyed some well earned down me. A er dinner that evening we held our own ‘Red Faces’ and saw how comfortable the students had become in each other’s company. Day 4: Mainly a travel day home but with camp ‘awards’ presented and farewell messages for our Year 12 leavers. Word amongst the students and staff was that this was one of the ‘best ever’ tours. A er a few naps early in the trip home the last hour was full of happy ‘bus singing’ and many happy mes. Nagle Music Tour is unique in that it has students from Years 7 – 12 all on the one camp, and to see the way our seniors mentor and accept the difference in ages and abili es is wonderful. Many social bonds are formed amongst students that may otherwise never occur. Thanks to all a ending music students and hard working staff for making it work so well.
