June 2020 Tena koutou katoa, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Kia orana, Ni sa bula, Marhaba, Namaste, Mabuhay. Finally we are at Level 1 in this strange new world we live in. Hopefully it brings normality for us and economic recovery. This newsletter is focused on changes we have made to the school year, please keep it for your reference. A Candle of Hope in a Divided World Thank you, Jesus, for your astonishing gifts to us: your multifaceted teaching, in parable and paradox; your all-embracing love that encompassed such an unlikely mix of people and invited them to get along. Thank you for your great array of contradictory witnesses; and for your explosive Spirit that pitched them out into the world before they had agreed upon a single version of the story. Thank you, Jesus, for your church of many colours. Give us the humility to welcome your gifts, and all the traditions that bring them to us. Help us to delight in difference, to listen and learn and blur the boundaries and work together for you. Make us a broad church; a broad and generous church; a candle of hope in a divided world. Change of dates for the remainder of 2020 With the effects of Covid 19 lockdown, we have changed aspects of our events planner to advantage our students. Term holiday dates remain the same as follows: Term 2 holidays Monday 6 July to Friday 17 July Term 3 holidays Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October Term 4 holidays Begin for junior students on Monday 7 December Please note the following: Term 2 ● Senior reports for mid year will be released at the end of Term 2, Friday 3 July. ● The senior school ball scheduled for July 11th was cancelled by De La Salle College in April during Level 4

lockdown. There is some talk around De La Salle hosting their own School Ball in October, but this interferes with our girls preparation for exams and I do not support such a massive distraction at a critical time of the year.

● July holiday tutorials will run Monday 13 July to Friday 17th July. These will be advertised individually by staff. Term 3 ● Junior reports for mid year will be released Friday 14th August. ● Options afternoon will be held on Tuesday 25 August. HODs will be available to answer subject questions. ● Level 1 Maths “MCAT” national exam Tuesday 15th September.

Term 4 ● Senior Prelim exams are in the first two weeks of Term 4, Wednesday 14 Oct to Tuesday 20 October. Staff will

be running tutorials and assisting seniors with exam preparation during the preceding holidays. ● Level 2 Tongan CAT national exam Tuesday 20 October. ● Level 1 Tongan CAT national exam Wednesday 21 October. ● Level 3 Tongan CAT national exam Thursday 22 October. ● Thanksgiving Mass (last day for seniors) Friday 6 November. ● Senior Prizegiving - Tuesday 10 November. ● Year 8 Orientation - Friday 13 November. ● NCEA Exams - Monday 16 November to Wednesday 9th December. ● Year 9 and 10 exams - Monday 16 November to Wed 18 November. ● Teacher Only Day - Thursday 19 November (this is across the city to allow for teachers to plan for NCEA

changes). ● Junior Prizegiving - Friday 4th December. ● Teacher Only Day - Monday 7 December.

Whakarangatira : Black Lives Matter

The Mercy Value of “Whakarangatira” embraces all aspects of human relationships. We have all witnessed the tragic events relating to George Floyd in the United States. Protests that have followed have been global, often spontaneous and most have been peaceful. They have drawn attention to how we need a continual evaluation and re-evaluation of how we need to address institutional racism and prejudice of all forms.

McAuley Response

At McAuley we had our own movement at lunchtime on Tuesday 2nd June organised by senior students. The movement was a call to “Lay Down With Me”. Students lay down for the amount of time that George Floyd was forced to lay down.

Church Teaching What does the Church say about this? In 1996, our bishops in Aotearoa/New Zealand produced a statement entitled Te Kahu o te Ora addressing racism and other forms of abuse with a Catholic response to hold a “consistent ethic of life”. This consistent ethic of life is based on the understanding that all humans are created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26). This teaching links racism with abortion, euthanasia, economic disparity, environmental abuse and warfare. All of these evils need to be addressed at their root. We need to respect the dignity of the human person and the environment. Respect needs continual evaluation and re-evaluation.

Te Atua o te whakarangatira. Help us to show whakarangatira for the whole human family and our mother earth. We make this prayer as we place our trust in you. Amene

Enrolments Enrolment applications are now being taken. Application packs can be collected from the school office, downloaded from our website, or can be posted to you. Once all the required forms are received, an interview with the Principal will be arranged. Please make sure you get applications in as soon as you can as places fill quickly.

Attendance Dues Financial assistance is available to assist families who have experienced financial hardship due to reduced income or job loss as a result of Covid-19. The assistance is only available for Terms 2 to 4 in 2020, for students attending a Catholic secondary school in the Auckland Diocese. An application form for this assistance is available from Mrs Mabey at the school office.

Homework Centre The classroom in Moera block set aside for after school study continues to be available until 5pm each day. Students have access to computers if they need to catch up on lost learning, or want to complete their homework. If you are not picking your daughter up until this time, please encourage her to use this space to do homework. The library also remains open until 4pm.

Parking at the school gate The area in High Street around the school gates is very busy before and after school. The yellow lines on the road mean no stopping or parking and this is for the safety of our students and those across the road at St Joseph's School. If you are dropping off or collecting students, please make sure you park away from this area. Parking wardens often patrol this area and will issue tickets. The school has no control over parking areas in the street, or the wardens. This is the responsibility of Auckland Transport. We appreciate your understanding with this matter.

Getting to school on time The school day begins at 8.40am with form time. Students should be at school to attend form time as this is an opportunity for notices and other important information to be given out. Auckland traffic is always heavy at this time so we ask that you allow extra time for the traffic. If students are using public transport, they may need to catch an earlier bus or train.

Library News This week in the library we are celebrating Philippines Independence Day. Independence for the Philippines was gained on 12 June 1898. The school's assistant librarian, Mrs Dionisio, is from the Philippines, as are some of our other support and teaching staff. Our display in the library gives us a great opportunity to learn a bit more about the language and culture of this Southeast Asian country.

Cultural Groups Fiafia Afternoon Our cultural groups were unable to perform this year due to Polyfest being cancelled. These photos are from the school’s fiafia afternoon.
