Respect ~ Perseverance ~ Growth Principal Matters by Mark Watson All Students Return Monday May 25 We learned via the media on Monday evening that a new approach was being adopted to reo- pen schools in NSW and that the phased model we have been following was being abandoned. This was confirmed by the Department of Education on Tuesday afternoon after school, which left us three days to come up with a new plan to reopen the school. From next Monday on- wards, all students will return to school for face to face lessons. While the school will be open everyday for students in all years, the school will not be fully operational. Interschool visits and excursions, for example, will not go ahead and this has led to the cancellation of activities such as debates, sporting knockouts and grade sport. This is a reflection of the cautious nature in which schools will reopen. Attached to this newsletter is a document entitled A guide to NSW School Students returning to face to face learning”, released by the Department of Education this week. If you have any questions in response to this document, do not hesitate to contact me. The following is a summary of the measures we will take. Resume face-to-face lessons for students in all years from Monday May 25. The Department has informed us School students do not need to follow physical distancing guidelines”. It is not possible for us to implement physical distancing in classrooms when all students return. The classrooms are not big enough and we will not have spare spaces, as we have done over the last two weeks, for class overflow. We will look at establishing a section of the playground where students and staff can practise social distanc- ing at recess and lunchtime if desired. We will not return to the staggered recess and lunch breaks because of their disruptive nature, especially on wet weather days. In some cases we have staff that will continue to teach off site. We intend to use the school hall as a learn- ing hub for these lessons. Students should bring their laptop, charger and headphones everyday in case they have an online lesson. We will continue to temperature test students, staff and visitors. The location will move to the hall and will be well signposted. The Gym will return to PE for lessons. If your child is not well, do not send them to school. If your child has a raised temperature or if they are unwell at school, you will be contacted to come and collect them. If your child will be absent for medical reasons for an extended period (more than three days) we will require a medical certificate. Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss this. Alternative arrangements for work will be made and in some cases this may involve online learning. We will continue to encourage good hygiene practices. Bathrooms are being checked daily to make sure there are adequate supplies of soap and paper towels. We have ordered an upgrade for our taps so that the water runs long enough for students to wash their hands according to the guidelines. The bathrooms are being cleaned after recess every day. We have supplies of hand sanitizer and will have automatic dispens- ers installed around the school for Monday. Students in Years 7 to 10 will be able to do PE in their school uniform. They will be required to bring a pair of joggers on the days they have a practical class. They must wear their normal school shoes to and from school. This will eliminate the need for students to use the change rooms. Sport will go ahead on Thursday afternoons. We will send home more details about this next week. We will not play contact sports or grade sport during this time. Roll call will not take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Students should go directly to their first lesson on these days. Period 1 will begin at 9.00am on these 3 days. Period 1 will continue to start at 8:50am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will no longer end lessons 10 minutes early as the majority of lessons will be face to face. Music Tutorials will start next week. Band and Performing Arts Unit classes will recommence from 1 June. Term 2 Week 4 22 May 2020

Attached to this newsletter is a document entitled “A guide to NSW School Students returning to face to face learning”, released by the Department of Education this week. If you have any questions in response to this document, do not hesitate to contact me. The following is a summary of the measures we will take.

Resume face-to-face lessons for students in all years from Monday May 25.

The Department has informed us “School students do not need to follow physical distancing guidelines”. It is not possible for us to implement physical distancing in classrooms when all students return. The classrooms are not big enough and we will not have spare spaces, as we have done over the last two weeks, for class overflow.

We will look at establishing a section of the playground where students and staff can practise social distanc-ing at recess and lunchtime if desired. We will not return to the staggered recess and lunch breaks because of their disruptive nature, especially on wet weather days.

In some cases we have staff that will continue to teach off site. We intend to use the school hall as a learn-ing hub for these lessons.

We have supplies of hand sanitizer and will have automatic dispens-ers installed around the school for Monday.

Students will need to wear correct school uniform. This has not been the case for a number of students over the past two weeks. The uniform shop will be open and students will be able to purchase items as needed. If your child is unable to wear the correct uniform, they should bring a note from you and hand it to a Deputy when they arrive at school. Please refer to the notice from the Uniform Shop later in this Newsletter for open-ing times.

The bus companies servicing the school have advised us that social distancing will not be required when transporting students to and from school. Their priority will be to ensure students are transported to and from school. Students will be given preference over members of the public. It is important that students be wear-ing the correct uniform to make it easier for them to be identified by drivers. It is also important that students take precautions, such as using hand sanitizer, if they are travelling to and from school on public transport.

The canteen will continue to operate as it has done for the past two weeks.

We ask that parents do not come onto the school grounds. The spread of the virus among adults remains a concern and staff will need to socially distance. If you have a concern, please ring the office and arrange-ments will be made to address the issue.

We will continually review our practices in terms of their effectiveness and in the light of new developments. You will be notified of adjustments as we make these. We have consulted with staff and the P&C in developing our plan and will continue to do so as adjustments are made. The returning of all students to school is the next step in opening the State. It is important we remain vigilant and take precautions; we do not want a second wave. Now that testing for the virus is more accessible, it is important that everyone who displays symptoms is tested. If the virus is active in our community, testing will allow it to be un-covered. A positive case in the school will lead to the school being closed for cleaning and contact tracing. While I hope we do not have any cases, I would prefer we know about it quickly if it is circulating in our community. I have been tested, it’s not pleasant, and happily the result was negative. I would urge everyone to be tested, no matter how minor the symptoms. Having explained all of our arrangements, I must say we are delighted to be welcoming our students back to school. A number of staff have commented to me how good it has been to be back in the classroom and teaching their Year 12 classes again. It really has been an unpredictable and challenging year. In the last 9 weeks we have all been doing things we would have never thought possible, myself included. The Department would like to see growth in every school every year. I think we have had 9 years of growth in the past 9 weeks. Relocation of D-Block and Other Infrastructure The move from D-Block into the demountable buildings was completed on Friday this week. The Administration block is in the middle of the demountable “city” and signs have been put into place to help students find their way to the building. The deputies and I are located in the demountable closest to the Yarrabung Road driveway entry. The English, Mathematics and TAS staffrooms are also located in demountables near Administration. Attached to this newsletter is a map of the demountables with room numbers. Monday will be the first day students will use the demountables for their Mathematics lessons, replacing the upstairs D-Block classrooms. Students should familiar-ize themselves with the location of their classrooms before returning to school on Monday. We will put in place measures to assist students in the junior years locate their classroom. Both B and D blocks will be fenced to pre-vent student access while the remediation work takes place. In other infrastructure news, the first floor slab of the new stadium building was poured this week. It will not be long now before the frame of the building becomes visible. Reports Distributed for Year 12 Year 12 reports were distributed last Friday May 15. These reports covered the period from Term 4 last year through to the end of Term 1 this year. If you are a Year 12 parent and you have not received your report, please contact the office. The reports are very detailed and are in the same format as our usual reports with the exception of a new field indicating participation with an emphasis on participation during the period of remote learning. Parent teacher evenings have been cancelled due to the Corona virus; however, we are looking at alternative approaches for parents who are seeking additional information about their child’s performance in a subject. Best Wishes Mark Watson Principal

The relocation of D Block to Demountables is now well underway with the administration team now located in the third row of the “city”. You’ll find us by following the signs located around the school. Amanda Sibbald School Administration Manager

YEAR 9 SCIENCE

On their first day back to class last week, Ms Chim's Year 9 science class spent the period outside learning the differences between bacteria and viruses. Students were given pieces of paper with properties or attributes of ei-ther bacteria or viruses and took turns sticking it to the correct sheet. They enjoyed discussing where some of the words belonged and in doing so, hopefully learnt the differences between bacteria and viruses.

YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY PBL PASSION PROJECTS Year 9 Geography completed their PBL Passion Project last term. This task gives students free reign to pursue a geographical concern that they would like to research and solve. Below are two examples from 9T.

The increasing issue of unsustainable paper waste heavily affects our environment. For our Passion Project, we focused on creating a more sustainable learning environment for our school. We made laminated runner notes and planned to create other forms of reusable notes (sickbay passes, detention slips etc.). We also planned to expand the current recycling system (introducing more bins and improving the current bins). The Passion Project allowed us to have a deeper understanding of how small issues in our local environment (school), affects on a larger scale. Sophia C, Chanel C.

For our project, we researched the effects liquid shampoo has on the environment. Currently, standard shampoo has 4000 chemicals in it, many of which are known to be toxic and 552 million large shampoo bottles end up in landfill annually. In response to this issue, we made our own zero-waste, natural shampoo bars that will last 60 washes. By making these bars, we are able to reduce plastic waste and chemicals that are being released into the environment. We also sent emails to large shampoo companies asking them if they would be able to sell environ-mentally friendly shampoo. Alaiya M, Aleksandra B, Sophie H.

YEAR 7 LOTE/HSIE PBL TASK

Year 7 completed their combined LOTE/HSIE PBL task last term on heritage sites and significant cultures. Stu-dents were tasked with writing an essay, presenting a historical narrative and creating their own artefact.

The Birdman rock is a painted rock found on Easter Island. The rock represents the Birdman cult of the island. The origin of the cult is still unknown, as such with the time the cult was mainstream on Easter Island. We chose this artefact because we found it quite funny and surprising that there was a cult on Easter Island of all places! We made the artefact by going on a walk for a semi-spherical rock. We then painted the front of the rock white and waited for it to dry. While it was drying, we got a photo of the rock on Micah’s phone screen and put baking paper on the screen. Then using the screen light shining through the baking paper we drew an outline of the strange birdman creature with a pencil. Then we carefully cut out our birdman outline and stuck in on the now dry white painted rock. We used a black pencil to draw an outline onto the rock with our baking paper stencil. After that, all we had to do was paint it in black. Micah L, William M & Hayden R

This old map of Segovia was created around about 30BC. No one knows who created the map, but it could have been the romans, or one of the towns rulers, it is still a mystery, who created the map. It was used as a simple way to show the size and shape of Segovia as well as the location of landmarks and the distance between towns. Many people would have used this map to navigate their way around town to help find specific landmarks. Architects would have also used it to help decide where new buildings and landmarks could be built. The Cathedral, Cristo del Mercado and the cemetery are clearly marked as one of the most important landmarks on the map, this tells us that the society of Segovia must have been quite religious. The old map is very important as it tells us what Segovia looked like thousands of years ago as it maps out all the building and castles, and the shape of the old town. This helps historians and archaeologists identify where relics may have been originally located. Victoria B, Evan, B, Alexander B

Schools are safe and open for full time face-to-face learning All schools are returning to full on-campus learning from Monday 25 May. All school activities and operations will be in line with Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and NSW Health guidelines as applicable.

School students do not need to follow physical distancing guidelines, but should follow good hygiene practices like:

• Regularly washing hands• Avoiding sharing drinks or food• Coughing or sneezing into your elbow, or a tissue which should be

discarded immediately.

School attendance

All students should be at school unless:

• They have a medical certificate which states that they are unable to return to school due to an ongoing medical condition

• They are currently unwell.

Students who have a medical certificate to stay at home will be supported to learn from home in line with regular procedures if they are able to. These regular procedures are different to what was offered during the learning from home period. If you require work to be provided to your child whilst they are at home due to an underlying health condition, you should contact the school for assistance. Please note, students who live with a family member in one of the categories identified as being at increased risk by the AHPPC, should attend school unless a medical practitioner advises otherwise in writing. If your child is unwell, do not send them to school. If they are unwell at school you or your nominated emergency contact will need to collect them immediately. Please make sure your contact details are up to date.

If a student is absent without a medical reason for more than three days, this will be recorded as an unauthorised absence and followed up by the school. If you need any support to get your child back to school, please contact your school.

Reporting and assessment

Your child has been assessed during the learning from home period and will receive additional assessment on their return to school. You will receive your child’s semester 1 report before the end of August (week 6, Term 3).This may be a simplified version of the report you normally receive. Schools are encouraged to discuss your child’s progress with you before the written report is issued.
