Welcome to Princes Street Primary School. We trust that your association with the

At Princes Street Primary School we are committed to our Mission of “Nurturing and

We believe that students learn most effectively when they feel valued, healthy, happy and safe at school.
The school’s Vision of “Challenging Thinking and Designing Futures” reflects our
commitment to focus on 21st century skill development, ensuring our students are
productive citizens now and in the future.
We foster strong positive relationships with families and the community. Teachers at
Princes Street Primary work collaboratively to focus on student learning, designing
challenging and innovative learning programs and personalised learning opportunities for
students.
Princes Street Primary School was established in 1922 and has a long history of
providing excellence in government education for students from Kindergarten to Grade
6. Student numbers have been capped at approximately 360 for the last few years.
Child Care facilities, along with Before School and After School Care programs are
available on site and are run by the Sandy Bay Child Care Centre.
A fundamental aspect of Princes Street Primary is the friendly and welcoming
atmosphere where all members of our school community are respected, supported and
valued. The school has a reputation for a high level of involvement from both the
community and professional staff. Together their contributions have enabled students
to achieve excellent academic and high social standards. The closely linked community
holds the school in high regard and strongly supports its activities.
An integral part of the management of the school is the very active School Association
which assists in overviewing school operations and plays a pivotal role in the supporting
the school and its programs.
WELCOME
The school motto Labor Omnia Vincit (Work Conquers All) remains as important today
as it was when first used in 1922. We all strive through our work and our learning to
be the very best we can, with the hope that as individuals we will enhance and give back
to the society in which we live.

STORY MAGIC AND SKILL MAGIC,
LAUNCHING INTO LEARNING – BIRTH – 4 YEARS
Story Magic and Skill Magic are parent-child sessions held each
week from February to early December. They cater for children
from birth to 4 years. A teacher leads the group in stories,
songs, rhymes, gross and fine motor activities. We provide
opportunities for young children to develop their skills and a love
of learning, and we aim to build strong partnership between home and school.

STUDENT SUPPORT
Students and families are able to access, through the Education Department’s referral
processes, a range of additional support services. These include a School Psychologist, a
Speech and Language Pathologist a Social Worker, St. Giles Children’s Therapy Services,
a Support Teacher for Students on the Severe Disability Register as well as a Support
Teacher for Students with Additional Needs.
EXCURSIONS
Each class participates in local excursions during the year. Excursions are linked to the
classroom teaching and learning program. Excursion costs are included in Student
Levies.
2014 LEVIES AND STUDENT ASSISTANCE
Kinder $180.00 per year
Prep - Year 6 $300.00 per year
The Annual Levy assists with the provision of general student stationery (including
books, pencils and other classroom equipment), alongside the allocation of learning
resources to provide our students with the best access to materials, equipment and
experiences in, curriculum areas, literacy and numeracy, ICT, the arts and cultural
experiences, library, sport and physical education.
There are a number of school activities which are elective programs and do
not encompass all children. Parents will be asked to assist with covering the
cost if their child is involved any of the following:

Tasmanian All Schools Cross Country Gr 6 Leavers Day UNSW Competitions Years 3-6
Strings Camp + Performance Day Triathlon Debating
It is not possible to predict what every student may be involved in. However we aim to
give parents as much information in regards to likely costs for their child/children in a
school year. If you would like further details please contact the school office.
With the implementation of the new Department of Education Finance System we are

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN HOME AND SCHOOL
The school newsletter is the main form of communication with our school community
and is email out to parents each Wednesday. It contains information about current
school events and activities which may interest parents. A community information
notice board is located in the Primary foyer and includes a copy of the latest newsletter.
A copy can be collected from the school office as needed.
The school endeavors to limit the paper work going home in support of our focus for reducing and re-cycling. On rare occasions you may receive notification of excursions or
events during the week from individual class teachers.
Parents can nominate an email account to receive the school newsletter link
electronically.
UNIFORMS
The wearing of school uniform is expected for all students. Items of school uniform
may be purchased from the uniform shop which operates from the Resource room and
is open on two occasions each week.

New and used uniforms are available at a reasonable cost.
Students are required to wear a sun-safe HAT in Term 1 and 4 as part of its Sun Smart
Policy. These are also available for purchase at the uniform shop.

been given to quality and price. It is hoped that, within the range of items listed,
individual preferences and needs can be met with scope to mix and match’.

PRINCES STREET PRIMARY SCHOOL ASSOCIATION
All parents with children at Princes Street Primary School automatically become
members of the School Association. The parent members, current school staff (both
teaching and non-teaching), and any interested community members together form the
Association.
All parents are encouraged and welcome to attend School Association meetings which
are a useful forum to participate in the life of the school and to raise any issues regarding the operation of the school. The main functions of the School Association are
to:
Provide advice and recommendations to our Principal in relation to the general
operation and management of our school
Aid co-operation between teachers, students, parents and the community
Develop parent participation and involvement in our school
Discuss and approve our school budget
Contribute to policy development and reviews
Involvement in school improvements and developments
Assist with fundraising and school activities
Raise matters of concern as noted by parents or committee members
The School Association is managed by a committee which is made up of the Principal,
seven elected parent representatives, and two staff members. The committee meets
four times a year and holds monthly general meetings (open to all members) which are
run in an open and relaxed manner. Our Association strives to provide support for the
school, both financially, through our fundraising events, and professionally, through the
utilisation of our vast community resources.
CANTEEN
The school canteen is Gold accredited and is open every Wednesday and Friday. Lunch
orders for both days need to be put in on Wednesday. Ice creams are sold on Fridays
only. The canteen menu is issued each term and Friday's menu varies. Parent
Volunteers assist our Canteen Manager. If you are able to volunteer a small amount of
time to assist in the canteen please contact Kate our canteen manager on 6223 3388.
‘CELEBRATIONS’ (School Assemblies)
Celebrations of our students’ great work and achievements take place on a regular basis
on Friday afternoon beginning at 2.00pm in the school hall.
All parents and community members are very welcome to attend and share in our
celebrations.
Dates for our regular school celebrations are advertised in the school newsletter.
REPORTING TO PARENTS
Our Reporting Schedule is as follows:
Term 1
Parent Teacher Welcome Afternoon
The ‘Welcome’ sessions gives all parents the opportunity to meet with their child’s class
teacher early in the year, to foster a supportive partnership between home and school.
Information sheets are sent home to parents about the class, outlining class
expectations, routines and procedures for the year.
Progress Statement
The aim of the Progress Statement is to inform parents about how their child has
settled into school year. It focuses on information about their attitude, effort and
behaviour, and is directly linked to school expectations. This statement will also advise
parents of any early areas of concern.
Term 2
Major Written Report
This comprehensive mid-year report provides clear, detailed information about
students’ progress to date, with comments on achievements and specific learning areas,
highlighting any matters that require attention. This report forms the basis for the
Parent Teacher Discussions.
Parent Teacher Discussions
These meetings provide parents with an opportunity to meet with the class teacher to
discuss students’ individual progress in all learning areas, including areas for future focus.
Specialist Teachers are available for Parent Discussions by appointment if required.
Term 4
Summary Report
This succinct end-of-year report provides parents with a summary statement and
information about their child’s achievements throughout the year, along with English,
Maths, Science, Geography and History end of year assessments.
SCHOOL HOURS
Staff are on site from 8.30am to 4.00pm.
Students should arrive at school between 8.30am and 9.00am (there is no
supervision for students before 8.30am).
Lessons commence at 9.00am.
Recess Break is from 11.00am to 11.30am.
Lunch Break is from 12.50pm to 1.40pm (12.50pm – 1.00pm for eating)
Classes conclude at 3.00pm.
SUPERVISION
Supervision is provided by school staff as follows:
Playground 8.30am to 9.00am, 11.00am to 11.30am, 12.50pm to 1.40pm.
Students are not to arrive before 8.30am. This is for the students’ protection and
safety as there are no teachers on duty prior to 8.30am. No student will leave the
school grounds during the day unless the student is signed out by their parent/carer at
the school office.
Students are encouraged to go home promptly at 3.00pm. Students who are waiting for
parents assemble near the flag pole at the front of the School. Students are not
detained or kept in after hours so you should know the time your child would normally
be expected to reach home. Punctuality is required as students arriving late in the
morning miss the important introduction for their daily work program.
ABSENCES
Students who arrive after 9.15am must be signed in at the school office. Students
leaving school during the school day must be signed out by their parent/carer at the office.
We require notification of any student absence from school. A phone call or message in
advance, is preferable. While this is a courtesy which we appreciate, it is more as a
safety precaution to ensure that your student has arrived at school for the day. Student
absences please phone the school office after 8.30am or email
[email protected] before 9.30am.
USE OF SCHOOL GROUNDS
Parents are responsible if their children use the school grounds at weekends and after
school. Parents are requested to work with staff in encouraging respect for the school
property and the environment.
MEDICAL / EMERGENCY CONTACT DETAILS
A student information validation form will be distributed for completion for each child
at the beginning of Term 1 each year. These forms become the basis of an emergency
contact file for use in the case of accident, illness or emergency at school. It is most
important that this form is filled out and returned to school promptly.
Parents are asked to advise the school of any disability, medical health or allergy
problem affecting their child and any accompanying medical action plans.
ILLNESS OR ACCIDENT
On occasions when a student is ill or has been in an accident at school, parents will be
contacted by telephone and suitable arrangements organised. The school has trained
First Aid Officers who deal with minor incidents. Students who are unwell should not be
sent to school.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Parents are asked to inform the school in cases where children contract infectious
diseases (Swine Flu, Chicken Pox, Conjunctivitis, Diphtheria, Hepatitis A, German
Measles, Hand/Foot & Mouth, Leprosy, Measles, Mumps, Slapped Cheek, Whooping
Cough, Head Lice and School Sores).

SCHOOL BANKING
A parent volunteer receives banking from children every Thursday morning. The money
is banked with the Commonwealth Bank. All children are welcome to use this service
and our school benefits as a payment is made to the school for each deposit –
irrespective of amount deposited.
MOBILE PHONES
Our school policy on mobile phones clearly states:
Students who do not comply with teacher requests run the risk of phones being
lost, stolen or damaged.
As we have a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) program running in the school,
Grade 4 – 6 students may bring mobile phones to school for activities directed
by teachers.
Calls and messages are not to occur during class time unless it is part of a class/group/individual activity directed by the teacher.
If using the mobile phone as a BYO Device a permission form is required to be
filled out by both parents and students.
ENROLMENT
Your child must be four on or before 1 January to be able to start at Kindergarten that
year.
The process of enrolment at PSPS is a follows:
Contact the school and you will receive a copy of the Handbook and Application for
Admission form.
Make an appointment to have a tour of the classrooms and grounds. We encourage
potential new families to visit the school.
Meet with the Principal or a member of senior staff. This provides an opportunity to
discuss the schools operations and programs. It can also be combined with an
orientation session for your child to visit the school.

SANDY BAY CHILDCARE CENTRE
84 Lord Street, SANDY BAY
OPENING HOURS: 7:30am – 6:00pm The Centre is closed on Public Holidays, Easter Tuesday
and for the week between Christmas and New Year
Sandy Bay Child Care Centre caters for children from 6 weeks to 12 years of age
and offers:
Long Day Care
Before and After Kinder Care
Outside School Hours Care
Vacation Care
Across the entire Service, we have approved positions for 110 children. This basically
incorporates a 45 place Long Day Care Centre, a 65 place Outside School Hours Care program
(including positions Before School Care positions each day) and a 45 place Vacation Care
Program. The centre is privately owned and operated by Approved Provider, Alison LeBis. We
provide a high quality child centred education and care program which is based on current child
care theory.
All our Educators are either qualified or working towards obtaining appropriate qualifications
and have current First Aid, Emergency Asthma and Anaphylaxis Management certificates. In
addition, all Educators have passed a clear safety screen check by the Department of Education.
The professional Educators offer stimulating programs full of activities and experiences which
meet children's developmental needs. Our happy and caring environment assists in the settling
and ongoing support of both families and children alike.
As part of our service is situated on the school grounds, parents can be assured of their
child/ren’s safety during drop off and pick up times with the children remaining within licensed
areas during the transition from one program to another.
The Outside School Hours Care program operates from the Hall with the children having
access to a variety of facilities within the school grounds. Children can attend any of the extra-
curricular activities offered after school (eg. soccer, tennis, Chess Club, French) and then join
the Outside School Hours Care program at the conclusion of their session. Again, as they
transition from one activity to another, the children remain within licensed areas at all times.
The Vacation Care program is offered during school holidays with details of the activities
offered and daily booking sheets available approximately three weeks prior to the end of each
term. Bookings are essential as spaces are limited.
Parents are asked to supply a lunch each day with all other meals provided by the
Centre.
Child Care Benefit and Child Care Tax Rebate are available to assist you with child care
payments.
