PGCPS Specialty Programs’ History

Adopted “magnet” programs to encourage voluntary desegrega-tion of schools

Received unitary status from the federal court – no longer obligated to follow race-based admission

Redefined magnet programs as “choice” programs based on student interest and aptitude

Strategy Team

The Strategy Team for Specialty Programs is working to develop a five-year proposal that will include:

• Monitoring and implementation strategies

• Identification of the infrastructure needed to support high school programs (feeder pattern)

• Recommendations based on the research of new models

Specialty Programs Today…

• Provide options in addition to the comprehensive curriculum

• Are designed to address the needs and interests of students and parents

• Allow for exploration and development of interests, while following state and school system mandates

School-Based (In-Boundary)

• Whole school program; every child within the school boundary participates

Selection-Based (System-Wide)

• Whole school or program within a school

• Students must submit an application, audition, test, and/or take part in a lottery

International Baccalaureate Primary Years (PYP) & Middle Years (MYP)

Overview: Empowers students to inquire into issues and ideas of local, national, and global significance. The result is young people who are creative, critical, and reflective thinkers.

PYP Sites: John Hanson French Immersion* & Melwood ES*

MYP Sites: James Madison MS/ Frederick Douglass HS & Dwight D. Eisenhower MS*

Enrollment: PYP: 928; MYP: 2,635

Highlights/Data Points: Dwight D. Eisenhower MS, John Hanson FI & Melwood ES are setting up the programs with the help of an external IB consultant. Frederick Douglass HS and James Madison MS are preparing for their program evaluation in 2015-2016.

Language Immersion

Overview: Immersion offers students programs with content delivered through the target language. As a result, students are highly proficient in a second language. Sites: Capitol Heights ES – STEM Spanish (K-2) Paint Branch ES – STEM/Partial Immersion Chinese (K-3) Enrollment: 329 Highlights/Data Points: Both schools will expand by one grade for SY2015-16.

STEM/STEAM Programs

Overview: Students engage in STEM/STEAM habits of practice through topics that include robotics, flight and space, and DNA and crime science analysis. The program provides a strong foundation for additional STEM/STEAM learning in high school and beyond.

Sites: Oxon Hill MS & Thomas Johnson MS

Enrollment: 1,604

Highlights/Data Points: Students participate in competitions to include Science Bowl, Lego Robotics, Final Frontiers, Sea Perch, Hour of Code, NASA rocketry, video gaming, and Destination Imagination.

Academy of Health Sciences@PGCC

Overview: Offers students a dual enrollment program and enables them to simultaneously earn their high school diploma and a college associate’s degree in health sciences.

Site: Prince George’s Community College

Current Enrollment: 396

Highlights/Data Points:

• First early/middle college program in Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

• 100% of the first graduating Class of 2015 will receive their diploma and associate’s degree on May 21.

• Since 2011, 100% of ALL students have successfully passed HSAs.

Aerospace Engineering and Aviation Technology

Overview: Offers high school students a highly-specialized, four-year program that prepares them for advanced studies in Aerospace Engineering or Aviation Technology. Site: DuVal HS Current Enrollment: 72 Highlights/Data Points: Partnerships with NASA Goddard and the College Park Aviation Museum provide exceptional enrichment opportunities for students in their field of study.

Career Academies

Overview: Offers students the opportunity to focus on a specialized program during high school that will prepare them for college and careers in their selected area of study.

Site: All 22 high schools offer at least one Career Academy.

Current Enrollment: 6,388

Highlights/Data Points:

73% of all 8th graders applied

for an Academy seat for SY15.

Overview: Provides students with technical skills and knowledge that add value to their academic education, including building a foundation for a college major in a technical field and earning college credits and industry certifications while in high school. Sites: Bladensburg HS, Crossland HS, Dr. Henry Wise, Jr. HS, Gwynn Park HS, Laurel HS & Suitland HS Current Enrollment: 864 Highlights/Data Points: • 98% of students graduate • 65% of students earn college credits or industry certifications • 81% of students pass English HSA; 80% pass Algebra 1 HSA 20

Overview: Offers arts instruction to engage students in a comprehensive curriculum that promotes effective communication, creative and critical thinking skills, artistic excellence, and an appreciation for cultural diversity. Sites: Suitland HS, Northwestern HS, Hyattsville MS, Thomas G. Pullen CPA School, Benjamin D. Foulois CPA Academy Current Enrollment: 1,879 Highlights/Data Points: • Students earn more than $8 million in

scholarship awards each year. • Students receive Superior ratings at local

and state level performance evaluations.

Fire/EMT Cadet Academy

Overview: Offers students an opportunity

to experience an exciting and challenging

program serving the community as a

Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician

(EMT). Develops values, self-discipline,

work ethic, and academic and life skills that

prepare them for career opportunities,

continuing education, and possible

advancement within Fire/EMS Depts.

Sites: Charles H. Flowers HS

Enrollment: 38

Highlights: Students can earn 36

community service hours, up to 17 college

credits, and 7 national certifications.

Overview: Aims to develop students who have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge – students who flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically.

Sites: Central, Crossland, Frederick Douglass, Laurel, Parkdale, and Suitland high schools

Current Enrollment: 472

Highlights/Data Points: IB DP students are awarded more than $6 million in scholarships each year.

Williams ES • Spanish Dual Language – César Chávez ES Enrollment: 1,378 Highlights/Data Points: • Robert Goddard FI selected as 2014 National Blue

Ribbon School. • John Hanson FI is an IB PYP Program. • Spanish Immersion programs will expand to first

Sites: Eleanor Roosevelt HS (serves Northern Area), Charles H. Flowers HS (serves Central Area), and Oxon Hill HS (serves Southern Area)

Current Enrollment: 1,945

Highlights/Data Points:

• Students in the program have a 100% graduation rate.

• $37 million in scholarship funds awarded to Class of 2014.

Highlights: Specially selected and trained teachers provide the program at the 11 TAG sites.
