Redundant Array of Independent DisksA way of organizing several disks to provide performance OR resilience:
Tolerant to a disk failure
Types of RAID:
Standard: Level 0 - 5
Vendor Specific: 7 >
Associated technology

RAID Level 7: JBOD – Just a bunch of disks
Host System
Disk Array Controller (DAC)
JBOD
Just a way of declaring normal disks under a RAID controller.
(May include COD information)

RAID 1E: An LSI specific Level
Host System
Disk Array Controller (DAC)
Data Disk 1
Mirroring over more than two disks.
During the “Mylex era” this was called Mylex-RAID 6, This is confusing since there
is a standard RAID level called RAID6 that has a completely different function

Standard O/S Support Windows 2000/2003 includes RAID 0, 1 & 5 Netware offers RAID 0, 1, 5 & 10 Unixware offers Online Storage Manager (0, 1, 0+1 & 5) Redhat & Suse Linux Include RAID 0, 1 & 5
Fujitsu-Siemens products DDM, Duplex Data Manager, Includes RAID 1 w Hot-spare(Important for MS Cluster configuration )
Implications of Software RAID
RAID 5/3 needs a Math Co-processor (for parity creation)
RAID often not supported on System/boot Partition (Except for FSC DDM)
No instant fail-over ( Except for FSC DDM)
Hot-Plug Support requires HW Control Mechanism.
Software RAID Support
RAID Basics PRIMERGY Installation Release November 2007 © Fujitsu Siemens Computers 2007 All rights reserved11
Cache Policy
Write back Only enable with BBU or UPS Support
Write Through Does not use cache Big Impact on Parity RAID performance
Predictive cache (Read Ahead pattern matching) (for RAID disable it) Switch off – most requests are not synchronous
Cache Size
Must Support BBU for a weekend.
Larger cache boosts parity raid if using write back policy
HW RAID

Customer Rules Only FibreCAT SX40 disk drives are released. SAS drives from FibreCAT SX60/80 are not
compatible!
Controller is released for FibreCAT SX40 connection only
Controller is not released for internal connection
Max. SAS cable length between controller – box / box – box is 2 m
FibreCAT SX40 must be up before power on of connected controller/server and Controller/server must be powered off before FibreCAT SX40
Redundant path configurations (using two I/O-Modules) are not released
Controller is not released for use as a shared Cluster device in Cluster Configurations
It is strongly recommended to save RAID configurations with MegaCLI
Controller Hotplug is not released
FibreCAT SX40 Hotplug is not released
Tape devices and optical devices (e.g. DVD) are not supported
OS boot from FibreCAT SX40 will be supported with next major release
Replacing a Hot Spare by a new hard disk, this new hard disk stops being handled as Hot Spare in SAS firmware. You need to reconfigure this new hard disk as Hot spare.
